The Chimes did a version of this song and if I remember correctly the band basically said. that was the sound they were looking for. It's well worth checking out
I find the meaning the same as you do, Steve Callais . Many of their own songs have a deep undertone. This song is a struggle while searching for life and religion.
Third verse is very spiritual. "Broke the bonds" "loosed the chains" "carried the cross of my shame".

Bono was on fire vocally for this album. Some of the best singing i've ever heard and it fits this sound and song like a glove. I love the young yelping shouting of early U2 but this is a whole other level.
IIRC they actually slowed this song down slightly in post production so Bono actually sang even higher than you hear on the released cut but since it slowed down it turned out a half step lower.

Imo Bono's vocals on this album and Achtung Baby are the greatest in Rock-n-Roll history. I know that many won't agree with this and i hear you. Just saying in terms of range, command, power only a few are in the conversation and for me Bono reached the top for 2 masterpiece albums.
The last verse is explicitly religious. I've always thought the song was about trying to fill the emptiness inside, and it expresses a kind of spiritual longing, like My Sweet Lord.

U2 is the greatest band I’ve heard in my 59 years, they and their music have gotten me through dark times. This particular song has always been a search for the unknown, a search for something that can’t be found on Earth. Bono is a self described Christian, he lost his mother at age 14 while at the funeral of her father, she died of a cerebral hemorrhage. His lyrics come back to this theme many times since it was released in 1987 and to his mother even through their most recent album. I was 17 when their first album was released, and a fan ever since. Listen to their first album “Boy” and a song called “ Out of Control”, he wrote it around his 18th birthday and you will see that the themes are similar. An album that is purely perfect. It is hard to explain to anyone who wasn't there how this album absolutely dominated the music world when it was released.
These lyrics probably give you the best insight into what he's looking for:

A perfect 1st side complemented by a richer 2nd side (in the days of sides). Achtung Baby was nearly perfect. This was perfect.

Achtung Baby is pure perfection, Joshua Tree is a very close second, falters slightly with Trip and Mothers. Both albums were earthquakes in world of rock, The Joshua Tree gets more attention because it catapulted them solidly into the biggest rock band in the world. Both albums show how U2 never fit into current music trends. Take a look at the billboard charts in 87 and 91-92 and there is nothing that sounds like either of these albums. Yet both albums were enormous influences on a boatload of artists that followed.

U2 has always been different rock in roll sound, maybe even an acquired taste. Fell in love with their sound from the Unforgettable Fire Album. The Joshua tree tour was the first time I saw them in concert. They put on a great show. You guys always mention vibe. To me this is a vibe band.

Love these Irish guys . I fell in love with with the Boy Album, that was the beginning of my forever love 💕.
My favorite thing about U2 is they are one of the very few bands where every person in the band is treated equally by the others. All decisions are made as a group. You rarely see that in the music industry anytime or anywhere. That kind of loyalty to your bandmates is so refreshing.
And they made some of the best deals with their record companies in this history of recorded music, which allowed them to maintain an independence that a lot of bands never enjoyed, while also raking in the dolla dolla bills.
Think they always split their money 5 ways. 4 band members and their manager, Paul McGuinness. He retired in 2013 so not sure how they split it now.
So agree equal ownership wins the day! Unlike the Eagles and the two dictators screwing over Randy Meisner and Don Felder, one the best voice of the band and awesome bass and the best guitar player ever the group had, not to take away from Joe at all but Felder is on another level all together.

It's on the Rattle and Hum album
There's the version from the "Rattle and Hum" movie (and album) where they are within a church, or the live version from MSG (I think 1987, it was included on the super deluxe release of The Joshua Tree), but there were also other venues where they performed with the choir.
I think it is a mix of Gospel and Rock, at least that’s what I thought the band suggested in Rattle and Hum

U2 was an extremely influential band for me. They were introduced to a much wider American audience with the advent of MTV and their performance of "Sunday, bloody Sunday" at Redrocks ampitheatre. Songs from the Boy, War and October albums had a link to the lingering unrest of the cold war still in play. The band used that early success to go on an incredible run of great albums with "The unforgettable fire", "The Joshua Tree" and then "Rattle and Hum". "The Joshua tree" is as good as an album can get. It is nothing but quality songs that stand the test of time.
U2 made a point of not sounding like all of the other bands at the time. Their sound was singular, and not bound to a time. This is really a gospel song. From a person who has moments of doubt. Also, this song inspired a lot of contemporary Christian and worship songs that came after. The sound of the entire Joshua Tree, really. But The Joshua Tree came first.
It still sounds similar to other irish bands of the time, or maybe they sounded like U2

Joshua Tree came out when I was 16/17 and everyone I knew had a copy. For me it remains quintessential U2.
Similar to The Doors, some of these tracks are a vibe or feeling more than a story or message.
I remember when this album came out... The first song that I heard off the album was on a radio station that was playing at the Arby's I was working at. The song was "With or Without You" and it was like nothing I had ever heard. This album and the tour that followed were huge! There is nothing to compare it to today to make it relatable. I guess the closest analogy would be like technology something like Samsung was a few years back in terms of hype. Anyway, it was good times and the music that was being made was extraordinary. There was so much good music that it was impossible to keep up with it all. I still discover new music from that time that i love. Anyway I listened to the entire album every night for about 2 months without missing a night. It got better with every listen. There are so many layers to the songs on The Joshua Tree that even now I still discover sounds or nuances, rarely to be sure, that I didn't notice before. This album like all masterpieces will take you on a journey if you let it. Maybe you will discover what you are looking for in that journey. Maybe you will shift the search from outside of yourself to inside. Or not... just a thought.

I think that particular U2 song could be classified as gospel. There is another video of them going to a church and singing this song with the choir. U2 just has their own sound. This song is off their Joshua Tree album, which is arguably their best album. I hope you react to more U2. Bono's voice was awesome back in the day. At a later point in U2 history Bono had throat surgery and it changed his voice. But he seems to be able to work around it. Although he often cannot reach those high notes like he used to. The first time I saw U2 in concert was in 1985 their Unforgettable Fire tour. So good. So much passion. Bono has been an activist all his life. Definitely not looking for a wife, he married his high school sweetheart and they are still married. This is my favorite band next to Led Zeppelin.

This is eighties Rock and Roll...like Billy Joel says, "hot funk, cool punk, even if its old junk, it's still Rock and Roll to me". In this song, I feel, he's talking about all the different things he's tried in life but he still hasn't found what he's looking for. This song is deeper than you're thinking...he is looking for meaning in his life, something money can't buy. We are all looking for something meaningful in our lives. Everyone loves Bono, he was kissing and hugging his fans in a caring way not a creepy way. I love Bono, he can kiss me anytime!❤❤
The world we live in is always trying to convince us all we need to change something - our look, our car, our mate, where we reside, where we work, what we make for money (and so on) - and once we do, we will finally be content and satisfied and live a happily ever life until we die. And, those things never work. Bono is a very spiritual person and once said "What you are looking for is inside you - not outside you.:

I saw U2 four times in 1 week in Florida back in 1985. It was the Unforgettable Fire tour and I saw them in Jacksonville, Tampa, and twice in Hollywood, Florida that week. All shows were general admission so when you got into the venue, you sprinted to get the best seats that were still unclaimed. The 2nd show in Hollywood, FL was the last show of the US tour. The next time they performed was at Live Aid. I got to meet Bono behind the arena in Hollywood, FL where the tour trucks were parked after both shows. Back in those days, Bono always went outside after the concert to meet the fans.

Bono has been married nearly as long as they've been a band. He was just trying to show by kissing his fans the love of the human soul. The idea behind the song was to explain as hard as he tried, he couldnt find the answer to life and religion (and he was raised as a stounch Irish catholic).The song is meant to say I've tried all of these things that life offers but I dont yet feel fulfilled with a significant answer to the questions I'm searching for.

The Joshua Tree album was explosive and really turned U2 into Megastars. Their appeal had kind of faded for me by this time (especially Bono), but there is no denying that this was their apex as songwriters.

This song was originally called "Under The Weather Girls" but the track was scrapped but only the drum tracks were kept and they just overdubbed everything else on top of the drum tracks from that song.

Oddly enough I wasn’t a fan when this came out but watching and listening years later I do have an appreciation of how different this is and was
When I first heard U2, we called it "college music." It wasn't popular yet, but the college kids listened to it and U2 was played on college radio stations. This particular song was from a bit later in their career, and it _became_ quite popular. By then, I think the term "alternative rock" was in fairly widespread use, and U2 (along with R.E.M. and The Cure and The Smiths and The Replacements and Pixies, etc.) was generally considered to be an alternative band, but they became pretty darn mainstream. It's probably "pop rock". (Genre is extremely tough to define, actually.)

One of the things about a song like this is that it means to the listener whatever it means to them. Maybe the hardest thing to find is your true self.
It's secret to success, ultimately. U2 gets knocked for being too vague and anthemic at times, but it's genius IMO. Who cares if some unhappy gate-keeper labels you "sellout". U2 still made music that made millions of people happy, or reflective, if even for a few minutes. I still smile every time I hear this song. Same with "Where the Streets Have No Name". The songs contain actual joy and actual yearning at the same time. The human condition. You can't put a price on that.
Its probably pop rock. Rock music able to be played on pop stations. mainstream. 80's U2 was its own vibe. You knew it was them when a song came on the radio.
This is actually a gospel song. This is one of the many songs that Bono has written about trying to find god's grace (and often failing).
Whenever Bono sings about love, he's actually singing about god. Its one of Bono's quirks that he calls god as love.

The song on this album that deals with addiction is Running To Stand Still. Personally, I think it's their most powerful song.

I really think the two of you should react to the version of this song recorded in a Harlem church. It was released on their record, Rattle & Hum. Silver & Gold is also an amazing song off of the R&H that doesn't get the recognition it deserves.
I think what he's looking for is a sense of content and completeness. And he hasn't found it because he's wandering around trying to find it when he just needs to be still.
I was stationed in England in 1983, and one day, while listening to Radio Free Caroline, they played a song from the U2 album War. It blew me away.
JOSHUA TREE is a truly great album -- and most of it is their impressions of America during an American tour. God's Country is just stunning and so heart-rending -- you beautiful young people should listen to it. It was called "Rock" at the time it came out, in the early 80's.

It was a very non-U2 thing to do at the time, to go up the street of gospel. I think it opened a door for them, to experiment with that territory... U2 was first a post punk band and this is a few years later. They were doing more anthemic alt rock with some of post punk still there by Joshua tree. They were really a sound all their own at this point.

Not a huge U2 fan, but this is my favorite U2 song. They made another version of this song for Rattle and Hum with a gospel choir
When U2 recorded this song and one of the band members said that it was written as a gospel song and the fans went absolutely crazy when it was released. Bono had very nice voice but you have to listen to their recording of "where streets have no names", that was recorded live on a rooftop building in downtown LA. What a performance!!
Brian Eno says Bono was pushing a B in the high end vocals of this song. He went on to say there is an emotion that comes forth when your voice is pushed to its limit.
Bono has thee voice! In fact when U2 first started out he was called Bono Vox which is latin for good voice. I love 80s U2. Especially early to mid 80s. This song is excellent.

1984, my new college roommates dragged me along to see this new band at the Fox Theatre in Detroit... love that phase of U2's music.
