The version of this from the Rattle and Hum album is really my favorite. That was their live compilation following up Joshua Tree. They perform with a full choir in almost a gospel arrangement. Well worth checking out.
MY LETTER TO U2-1987 I saw you guys on the Joshua Tree tour in 1987 at MTSU-Middle Tennessee State University Saturday November 28th 1987. The Bodeans opened up for you. I remember at the time Larry had a crush on Wynonna Judd and she came out and sang a duo with Bono! I didn't have tickets to the show. A friend of mine drove us 3 hours from East Tennessee to see the show. We bought tickets at the box office for $18.50. We ended up 8th row center stage! I remember back then the band held back tickets for fans who were willing to make the drive and couldn't get tickets via phone or record store locations. Thanks again to Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr for making a special album and tour! I was 18 and had just graduated High School that year! All the Best! Gary Lagstrom
"Desire" is a banger and a half. "Sunday Bloody Sunday" is a cry out against oppression. So many wonderful songs from them you guys should listen to. The guitarist, Edge, was an innovative user of the toys available to guitarist at the time and influenced many players that followed.
My mom used to have a few acres up in the Hill Country in Texas. We would go up there and camp quite a bit, and I would listen to their Unforgettable Fire album. I would listen to the ‘B’ side of the cassette as I went to sleep, and then when I woke at sunrise, flip it over and listen to the ‘A’ side as I had breakfast and watched the sunrise. My sister saw them in Munich, Austin, and Houston as part of their Joshua Tree tour, and I saw them in Austin and Houston. They were HUGE in the late 80’s/early 90’s.
I just saw them at the Sphere (10/7) It had been 20 years but all the feels were there and they did this one-so uplifting. I'll go look for the other reactions you've done on them but there is nothing like them live.
U2 shot this video in a few hours, it was all guerilla style filming, 2 vans, cameras and no plan. The very end when you see Adam Clayton (bass player, guy wearing glasses, the party animal of the group back in the day, they were only 26/27 at the time) and he jumps into the taxi for real and leaves before the video shoot is over to go enjoy Vegas! Great reaction guys, you both really have deep intelligent, honest dissections of the music.
U2 was at the time, just after "The Joshua Tree" was perhaps the biggest band in the world. An Irish band, they were chosen to play the Super Bowl halftime show, the first halftime show post 9-11. They played perhaps their greatest song, IMO, "Where The Streets Have No Name." Watch the video for both the song and the halftime show. It's a glimpse into how big they were. I don't know if there was dry eye in the house when they raised banners with everyone who died. They basically shut down part of LA during the afternoon to film the original video.
Hello Phil & Sam, I'm glad you enjoyed listening to U2. The 80's music video's crack me up. You either get some highly creative and well produced music videos or you get artists singing and walking around trying to do lots of really cool looking stuff while singing. But I think most people know this already and enjoy them for just what they are a bit of nostalgia. Either way, I love seeing the young baby face Bono & The Edge. I thought I'd suggest another band that I believe you've heard before and you both seemed to enjoy their tunes. So, if interested "The Police - Don't Stand So Close To Me (Official Music Video)" or "The Police - Don't Stand So Close To Me (Audio)" I enjoyed your reactions thanks for sharing and take care
Fun fact; The word was out that U2 were doing this video shoot downtown Vegas.. so video producer dressed up four U2 look alike and put them in a laundry van to lead the crowd away. They then borrowed a shopping cart from a homeless person to to put the sound system in at and started filming this video seen here. Also producer told The Edge “ you’re character is gonna be making a living Busking.. while you’re trying to avoid this guy (Bono) following you around preaching about god” 👈🏻seen here at minute 7:45
The Joshua Tree album is the reason I became a fan 1987 and after moving to the states in 1998 and learning the language and being able to understand the lyrics, I’m absolutely in love with their music and lyrics. I hope you do much more. As you noticed already, Bono’s voice changed over the years. The band formed in 1976, when they were boys in high school. Bono’s voice was still raspy and rebellious. He grew up and so did his voice , and their music and songs grew with. Each album is a new surprise for us fans. Keep your way working slowly forward and I would highly recommend “ Unforgettable Fire”, “Where The Streets Have No Name” , “Bad” . Also try some life performances from their tours. Especially their performances at the Band Aid Concert was especially iconic
The song was in the film Runaway Bride with Richard Gere. The song is about searching for meaning. I love the word ‘Still’, I guess he’s been searching a while.
Seeing this perfirmed live was amazing- Adam Clayton's bass is so strong it is lterally trying to pull your heart out.I read many years ago the inspirational basis for this song was the biblical story of Saul's conversion to the apostle Paul on the road to damascus.
Phil & Sam, when you listen to "Sunday Bloody Sunday", this is one of the rare occasions where there is a live version so good that it is probably better than the album version. It's from the Red Rocks concert early in their career. Most ppl would recommend doing that version over the album version.
Not rare for U2. Live really is the only way to react to U2.. 95% of their songs are brought to the next level live. As for Sunday Bloody Sunday, I still prefer the Rattle and Hum movie version, because how intensely emotional it is, but obviously the Red Rocks version is a classic as well.
I ALWAYS recommend the studio version first. For almost anything. I feel you can better appreciate the live version when you have the baseline and know where it is coming from. Peter Frampton is the obvious exception.
Minor correction: it's from the Wide Awake In America album, if I remember correctly. But you are right. As one DJ accurately described the live version of "Bad", it's eight of the best minutes on the radio.
You guys are awesome! Really enjoy your reactions. I would highly consider watching u2's live performance of bullet blue sky in Paris. Especially considering the times we are living in today. A message we all need to hear. Continue success and happy Thanksgiving
This is one of my favorites from them Recommend song New Years Day to be played on New Years Day and Sunday Bloody Sunday on January 30th on the Anniversary regarding what song is about. (Sunday 30 January 1972)
Your interpretation is pretty spot on. They were at crossroads as a band and the 3 wanted to go kind of Christian rock but the bassist Adam Clayton wasn’t on board. I think your interpretation and comments are spot on. As Bono said, “you know I believe it” but was on a constant search for more
Yay!!!!, seen them when they were fairly new, 1983 at the US FESTIVAL SAN BERNARDINO CALIFORNIA, also, early 90s, 1998, and again celebrating the Joshua Tree Anniversary in the 2000s. They made an awesome tour movie with the songs on their movie RATTLE and HUM in 1987❤️😍👍Try watching it, I believe you’ll enjoy. Also in the movie… they perform a rehearsal type version with a church choir. And THAT alone was so good.
I truly love this song, it came out when I was between age 29 to 30 and I work a lot on my own journey traveling to cities and I hear this song play on the radio in my car, struggling with what is it I am looking for? so it touch my heart to hear this song again thank you both you too look as you belong together also. I finally did find what I was looking for it is inside of me. Thank you so much and Happy Thanksgiving.
I'm not seeing it mentioned, but one of my favorite U2 songs is "Numb". Probably because it was such a huge departure from their usual sound that my jaw hit the ground after hearing it for the first time on the radio, thinking wtf?! is this, and then having the DJ announce that it was U2 and having to completely re-evaluate the song. Highly recommend the official video. If nothing else, it's a fun listen.
When U2 visited the US for the first time they recorded songs in Harlem (Angel of Harlem), in Memphis, TN with BB King (When Love Comes to Town) just to name a few. Bono is also well know as a humanitarian.
With U2, go with "Bad" - Live Aid "Where the Streets Have no Name" - Elevation tour, Boston "Bullet the Blue Sky" - ZooTV tour, Sydney "Every Breaking Wave" - EMA
The songs from the Rattle and Hum with live performances Sunday Bloody Sunday, BB King song When Love comes to town and many more live versions of songs
Sam…you said that.Vegas didn’t look like you remember it. My husband and I moved here in 1990. And, we used to go to the Strip allot for shows and restaurants. Now that we’ve aged, I don’t go down there allot. In the past 10 years, it has changed SO much, that it feels like a different place altogether from what I remember. And U2 has moved through time as well, and is now in residence arcThe Sphere. I have tickets in February and looking forward to it. 😁
I was never into U2 as a teen like my class in late 80s to 91. They all went to the Rattle and Him concerts. I was more into Metallica. Now as an adult I really love Bono’s voice.
I would also like to suggest U2 - With or Without you, They did a very iconic live performance 6 years ago at The Abbey Road studios made famous by The Beatles , it has 240m views and is a great chance for you to hear modern U2 perform one of their greatest ever songs!
My father's ONLY song by u2 that he liked He OWNED the Joshua Tree and ONLY LISTENED TO THIS SONG WOW I listened to the whole thing and this began my love affair with this group Still going strong ❤
If you're interested in a very interesting mix of U2. It's worth while checking out Passengers (which was U2, Brian Eno, and the late great Luciano Pavarotti) called Miss Sarajevo, which stemmed from the Bosnian war back in the early to mid 90s. I won't spoil how Pavarotti fits in, but if you know he was one of the three great operatic tenors it adds an interesting mix.
If you decide to react to Sunday Bloody Sunday, make sure you do it from the live album called Live at Red Rocks! Easily the best version, and it was the MTV videos as well. I love this band being Irish myself. They are our biggest export of music as well as The Corrs. Great reaction as always. Love the insight!!! 🤟🍻
Thank you....I was wondering what that sound was WITH the video on at same time. Thought there was a slight alarm going off here......hahaha! yeah, guess it was for the poor pup....
I know you guys like to listen to studio versions first but I really hope you will do some live U2 next. All I Want Is You/Streets Have No Name (Slane Castle) and Until The End Of The World/New Years Day (Zoo TV Sidney) are a great start.
Playing For Change does a wonderful and emotional version of this song..... You guys should check out the PFC playlist.....the've done Whwn the Levee Breaks and Imagine and Gimme Shelter and many others....all with musicians from around the world playing together.....
There is a really nice cover of this that is just a guy and his guitar, sitting on a couch with his friend who is singing the harmonies. It is The Light Parade - I Still Haven't Found What I'm Lookin' For; Stand By Me.
Interesting Facts- The music video for this song was filmed on Fremont Street in Las Vegas, following their Joshua Tree Tour concert in that city. After they finished filming, Bono lost almost 10 million dollars playing quarter slots at Caesars Palace Casino. Okay… I made that last part up. 😁
Hey Guys , Joshua Tree National Park In Desert of California Just West Of LA . You have to Do The Song Where The Streets Have No Names ! Then You have To See Them Do The Half Time Show of Super Bowl 36 ! The Same Song But Once You Watch It You Will Know Why!!!!!!!!
Hearing hit songs from this album on the radio in 87 and 88 was a breath of fresh air. This was a huge sonic shift from all the pop hair metal we were overdosed on at that time.
The Joshua Tree album is a masterpiece. Many good songs including Desire, Trip Through Your Wire, With or Without You, Where the Streets Have No Name etc.
Hi Phil and Sam. This is my first comment. I love your reactions to music. I suggest Falling In Reverse. Ronnie Radke is a genius IMO. His videos are like watching a mini movie. Hi mixes many types of music. He fuses Rap, Rock, Metal and Hip Hop.
Not arguing against your point, but I think the live versions are often much better if you already know the studio version and can see and hear what they've done with it. Gives you a greater appreciation for the live version, most of the time. I'd like to see them do a two part reaction, starting with the studio and then watching the live.
Most U2 songs have spiritual undertones but they did it in a real way and didn't let it compromise the music. I own albums and have seen them live many times even though im an atheist. Celebrating your religion in music doesn't have to be hammy or obvious.
Favorite U2 song? That is tough, they have a great library. I guess I would choose Beautiful Day (more special meaning to me) and I do love their version of Everlasting Love. But on most cases, you cannot go wrong with U2.
Do the live version of " Sunday Bloody Sunday ' it is a song about an actual event that happened in Ireland on January 30, 1972, in Londonderry, and in the Bogside 13 people were killed and 15 injured when British forces opened up on demonstrators.
The version of this from the Rattle and Hum album is really my favorite. That was their live compilation following up Joshua Tree. They perform with a full choir in almost a gospel arrangement. Well worth checking out.
I don't think it's gospel arrangement. I think it's a gospel song disguised as a rock song.
Agree that church gospel version is amazing!
Bono is a genius song writer!
April 87 to be exact, what a time to be a teenager...🔥👍
They are so good in concert. one of my favorite songs
Great reaction !! The video was recorded on April 12, 1987. Vegas in the 80's !!
MY LETTER TO U2-1987

Joshua Tree is a top 25 album of all time by anyone....5 stars...U2 definitely hits on spirituality from time to time
I love "With or Without You" and "Stuck in a Moment " by U2.
"Desire" is a banger and a half. "Sunday Bloody Sunday" is a cry out against oppression. So many wonderful songs from them you guys should listen to. The guitarist, Edge, was an innovative user of the toys available to guitarist at the time and influenced many players that followed.
U2's set at live aid is worth a reaction:). .probably 2nd best performance of the day ( queen stole the show that day )
Love both of your reactions. More early U2!
Pride (In the Name of Love). Or Where the Streets Have No Name my two favorite U2 tracks
This is one of those songs that is in my favorite songs rotation. Great song and good lyrics.
Their song “one”, is great. An all time favorite of mine.
I just saw them at the Sphere (10/7) It had been 20 years but all the feels were there and they did this one-so uplifting. I'll go look for the other reactions you've done on them but there is nothing like them live.
Great Album I got to see them live on this tour Rosemont Horizon Chicago Outstanding Show.
My favorite U2 song is New Year’s Day. It’s just got a real vibe to it that gets into your soul.
Hi Phil & Sam, U2 is a favorite band of mine, not because I'm Irish but because they have Great songs and also Bono.
For another spiritual song from them, listen to their song "40" from the album "Under a Blood Red Sky". It's taken from Psalms 40. Very good.
U2 & BB King together - 'When love comes to town'. Just a suggestion you won't regret.
Hello Phil & Sam, I'm glad you enjoyed listening to U2. The 80's music video's crack me up. there performance of "BAD" at live aid was straight fire!
“Bad” at live aid was great but the Rattle and Hum version of “Bad” is the best!!!!
Minor correction: it's from the Wide Awake In America album, if I remember correctly. But you are right. As one DJ accurately described the live version of "Bad", it's eight of the best minutes on the radio.
Their 20 min Live Aid performance in 1985 was amazing and worth checking out!
Also from Rattle and Hum, "When Love Comes to Town" which is a collaboration between U2 and BB King. Phenomenal.
The second of back to back #1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100, the only two of their career and from the same album.
You guys are awesome! Really enjoy your reactions. I would highly consider watching u2's live performance of bullet blue sky in Paris. Especially considering the times we are living in today. A message we all need to hear. Continue success and happy Thanksgiving
Thanks Brian! Happy TG!
Yes
This is one of my favorites from them Recommend song New Years Day to be played on New Years Day and Sunday Bloody Sunday on January 30th on the Anniversary regarding what song is about. (Sunday 30 January 1972)
U2- Until the End of The World🔥💯

Morissette’s newest!! Ang Huling El Bimbo. I promise will blow u away 🙏
All I want is You - live. A must U2 watch
When U2 visited the US for the first time they recorded songs in Harlem (Angel of Harlem), in Memphis, TN with BB King (When Love Comes to Town) just to name a few. Bono is also well know as a humanitarian.
With U2, go with
"Bad" - Live Aid

The songs from the Rattle and Hum with live performances Sunday Bloody Sunday, BB King song When Love comes to town and many more live versions of songs
Check out where the streets have no name both the official video in Los Angeles and Rattle and Hum movie!

the video shoot is just amazing walking amongst the people and being great humans
Theme song of mine in the mid 80s. Edge kills it on the guitar.
I was never into U2 as a teen like my class in late 80s to 91. They all went to the Rattle and Him concerts. I was more into Metallica. Now as an adult I really love Bono’s voice.
Bad (Live Aid 1985)!!!
Bad (live) from Wide Awake in America or New Year's Day from War are my favourites
Its actually a great Gospel song - there is a live version somewhere in a church they do with a gospel choir,,,
Rattle and Hum.
I would also like to suggest U2 - With or Without you, They did a very iconic live performance 6 years ago at The Abbey Road studios made famous by The Beatles , it has 240m views and is a great chance for you to hear modern U2 perform one of their greatest ever songs!
As someone else suggested here; their song “Bad” from Live Aid
On my top 5 of u2 songs ❤
The song was used in the movie "Blown Away"
My father's ONLY song by u2 that he liked
He OWNED the Joshua Tree and ONLY LISTENED TO THIS SONG
WOW
I listened to the whole thing and this began my love affair with this group
Still going strong
❤
Must definitely react to Clannad featuring U2's Bono "In a lifetime" (his best vocals in my opinion)🔺
If you're interested in a very interesting mix of U2. It's worth while checking out Passengers (which was U2, Brian Eno, and the late great Luciano Pavarotti) called Miss Sarajevo, which stemmed from the Bosnian war back in the early to mid 90s. I love this band being Irish myself. They are our biggest export of music as well as The Corrs. Great reaction as always. Love the insight!!! 🤟🍻
YES! The 1983 Live At the Red Rocks version is so electric compared to the studio version. Great suggestion 👏
Deep cut request? "Drowning Man" from the "War" album....
Thank you....I was wondering what that sound was WITH the video on at same time. Thought there was a slight alarm going off here......hahaha! yeah, guess it was for the poor pup....
Yes.
I know you guys like to listen to studio versions first but I really hope you will do some live U2 next. All I Want Is You/Streets Have No Name (Slane Castle) and Until The End Of The World/New Years Day (Zoo TV Sidney) are a great start.
Mantap
Next to Sunday Bloody Sunday I love this song for its sincere emotion!
Live version🤌🏻
Live at Red Rocks.
@@williamyates694 yes
Up close, Joshua trees and the desert they reside in are more strange than average. Great album.
favourite U2 song is 'Bad', did a fantastic show on live Aid 85, gotta check it out 🙂
That Cadillac at 4:02, you can fit like 8 bodies in that trunk 😂😂
Playing For Change does a wonderful and emotional version of this song.....
You guys should check out the PFC playlist.....the've done Whwn the Levee Breaks and Imagine and Gimme Shelter and many others....all with musicians from around the world playing together.....
The irony or maybe just coincidence is they are currently doing a residency in Vegas at the new Sphere. Watch some of the footage it’s spectacular.
There is a really nice cover of this that is just a guy and his guitar, sitting on a couch with his friend who is singing the harmonies. It is The Light Parade - I Still Haven't Found What I'm Lookin' For; Stand By Me.
You guys must watch the Beautiful South 'Rotterdam'. Great song.
The best version of "Streets."
My favorite is a lesser known song: The Three Sunrises.
Mysterious Ways is probably my favourite U2 song close 2nd is this one. Recognisable riff but lyrically less intense.
I'm not a big U2 fan, but my fave song by them is Window In The Skies. Consider reacting. Great song and the video is probably even better.
Would love to hear u guys do with or with or without you official from rattle and hum
Hearing hit songs from this album on the radio in 87 and 88 was a breath of fresh air. This was a huge sonic shift from all the pop hair metal we were overdosed on at that time.
CELTIC SOUL!
I love when you react to u2 it’s my favorite band, you should react too you can’t make it on your own by u2
The Joshua Tree album is a masterpiece. Many good songs including Desire, Trip Through Your Wire, With or Without You, Where the Streets Have No Name etc.
You absolutely have to listen to the entire Joshua Tree album.
The Outfield: Your Love.
Next Song to check out please.
Greetz from Germany 🇩🇪
And now they are full circle with a Vegas residency in the Sphere.
I think you would love Sunday Bloody Sunday about the civil war in Ireland. The podestants vs. Catholics.Awesome song❤
Live or live videos the best way to see/hear U2
Not arguing against your point, but I think the live versions are often much better if you already know the studio version and can see and hear what they've done with it. Gives you a greater appreciation for the live version, most of the time. I'd like to see them do a two part reaction, starting with the studio and then watching the live.
Sunday Bloody Sunday, New Year's Day, Pride, One, Mysterious Ways.
Most U2 songs have spiritual undertones but they did it in a real way and didn't let it compromise the music. I own albums and have seen them live many times even though im an atheist. Celebrating your religion in music doesn't have to be hammy or obvious.
Classic U2 more plz
U2 - Desire or Angel of Harlem
Favorite U2 song? That is tough, they have a great library. I guess I would choose Beautiful Day (more special meaning to me) and I do love their version of Everlasting Love. But on most cases, you cannot go wrong with U2.
