Detailed account of deadly mountain lion attack

- Taylen and Wyatt Brooks loved doing everything together, so when a 90-pound male mountain lion attacked them together, they bravely tried to fight it off to try and protect each other.
People should not go into the woods without a firearm ever. Just having one pistol would probably have saved this young man. So sad.

Arrogance. Goes into nature with zero respect.

A couple of months ago(Northern California) I was walking home from work on a dark street at 1 in the morning. Something jumped out of the bushes near me and ran across the street. I said "what the hell was that"! I followed it across the street to get a look, it was a Mountain Lion! Needless to say a slinked back across the street!!
I had my own cougar encounter 2 years ago while gold panning on a creek on Vancouver island. I was lucky enough that I saw them ( there was 2 together) before they saw me.
One was an older one with the black markings on the face, the other was a young one with no black on the face. I was panning on the creek behind a big boulder that partially shielded me from their sight. they came out on a fallen tree that went out over the creek and were looking around up and down the creek. I just froze in place since by bear spray was over 20 meters away in my pack and did not think I could get to it before they could get to me. Luckily there was a branch on the fallen tree they were on that partially blocked their view of my position and I was down wind of them as well. My only thought was to stay still as I know cats react to movement more than anything else. I am also glad I did not have my dog with me that day or things could have turned out very badly. The older one did look my way eventually but could not get a clear view because of the tree branch but did a head-bob trying to get a clearer view of me. They did eventually move on but I stayed frozen in place for another 5 minutes just in case. ALWAYS carry bear spray!!!
Bear spray? Are you trying to get people killed? You carry a gun ya dork. Ever hear a story where a guy was mauled after spraying a bear with bear spray? Yeah. Nuff said.
They had already smelled you bro, their scent is 30x what ours is. They were just not interested. They don't need to see you to know you were there, that's why he looked over, to make sure the source of the smell wasn't a threat. And if it was the older Lion looking your way, it's likely he had encountered humans before and knows the smell already.
They were experienced hunters from the area. I don't understand why they would go out with no self-defense. Nature is our master no matter how much we try to control it and destroy it.
They got too comfortable…
really @@kenguterrz3210
😢
Why would you try to control & destroy nature... animals can sense that shit as well as your fear. I've seen many a mountain lion in Sedona where I grew up. Cubs as well.. they want to be left alone.
Also he was an Idiot for throwing a backpack at it.. likely would've just walked away. I have been RIGHT NEXT TO momma and cubbies at 11 years old.. packs of coyotes as well as javelina(babies have suckled on my fingers while mom & dad stood there slowly sniffing the air to make sure I'm cool when I was 18)first thing you learn: don't allow fear to take over & don't get aggressive. These boys & most of you in the comment section only know fear & aggression towards nature, so they lost. So be it.
My heart goes out to this family. Especially the brothers they did what any family member would do in this terrible situation.

Hey, news flash- mountain lions are roaming the streets of cities in California, are all over rural areas, not just “wilderness”. They have killed people in Orange county. Hardly a wilderness.
I saw a mountain lion on the road to Mammoth Pool. It was every bit 12ft. from head to tail and it's head was as big as a beach ball. I was amazed at how big it's head was. They don't call them lions for nothing. There are enormous ones out there but you'll hardly ever see them....Until it's too late
Never go into nature without a weapon.
🤣🤣🤣
I saw one on Cuesta Ridge, CA, north east of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. This was in the 80s. I was driving, a bit after sun down and the ML was crossing the road in front of me, broadside. Head to tail, that thing occupied the entire width of the one-lane road. I suppose it was living on the prolific range cattle that roam those hills. Anyhow I couldn't help thinking an unarmed man would have no chance in hell against such an animal. Then I thought about how we would go traipsing through the nearby hills of camp San Luis Obispo all night in pitch dark as ROTC cadets, learning dismounted patrolling, laying down quietly in the brush, and so forth.
12ft? Nope.
A big beach ball? Or a small one?

R.I.P these young boys. Very sad for they're parents. I believe all lifes matter. Wild animals being killed in their habitat for being wild animals may bring peace of mind but its wrong. People can torture people to death and they still get to live. Yet a predator animal attacks in their habitat and they're killed. In the wilderness, there will always be that risk. You should be educated about it and always bring non fatal protection. There's plenty.

Always carry a knife, still may not save you but at least you have a fighting chance.
If they both had combat knives and knew how to use them that cougar would have been shanked to death in 30 seconds. Unfortunately most people don’t have the grit or skill to do that.
I was convinced about that 30 years ago by an article in Field and Stream, where a Canadian mother fought a cougar bare-handed for two hours, so her children could escape. When help came, she was still fighting. Once she knew her children were safe, she died.
If she'd had even a Mora knife, I think she could have killed the cat in 2 hours of work.
Unfortunately, California isn't much more friendly to knives than to pistols.
Flying knives from China will kill the lion from a distance

But was it predatory or territorial?
A mountain lion sees you long before you see it. A very sad tale of two brothers with outdoor experience, yet sadder still they had no effective means of defense against this mountain lion. I'm wondering if park regulations prohibited them from carrying less-than-lethal and/or lethal means of self defense, or if they just got complacent from their familiarity of the area. Airhorns, bear spray, walking sticks, sheathed hunting knives, and firearms are some of the items the brothers might have found useful to scare off this lion, but for some reason they became defenseless.
True, so I don't know if it was trying to eat them. They saw it, and it saw them, but perhaps they were far too aggressive trying to scare it off and it attacked. It was a young male cougar (and they were young men) so its possible that this was more of a "fight" than a hunt. Who knows. You wouldn't antagonize a big dog because instinctively you know it might bite you. But we are taught to be "large" and "scary" to predator animals, even if they aren't looking at us for a meal. That might have backfired for these young men.
This is a prime example of it's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have referring to a firearm
