- Ray Nielsen, 70, was hiking alone Thursday afternoon when he was blindsided by a mountain lion. After a brief struggle, Nielsen threw a rock at the animal and it ran away.

Lions generally hunt from the back or side. They spring and latch on with fangs and claws. The prey is knocked over, the lions don't release their grip on the prey's head or neck. The prey suffocates or suffers a broken neck. You wouldn't generally have advance notice. Depending on the force and how you were bitten, you might not be able to even reach your weapon. I carry too, but weapons are sometimes ineffective. But look on the bright side, unlike a bear, lions wait 'til you're dead to start eating.

been a hard winter...... they're hungry or threatened ..... just bought a should harness for when i trail run... hate the added weight. oh well.

@@oneskydog6768 Mountain Lions don't 'euthanize people', Democrats do that, with abortion & end of life euthanasia. Mountain Lions, just hunt & eat. If it's a tough year, like resources, and you go out on a trail alone, expect that nature may take it's course, and prepare accordingly.
@@oneskydog6768 I think it’s something you have to deal with when you go into the wilderness. Humans shouldn’t control nature, it never ends well. The man won, and the Mountain Lion most likely learned it’s lesson after getting hit in the head with a rock. Nothing more to do.

When your old and stupid you never think anything will ever happen to you. I take my military K9 with me on any walk, but then I am armed as well. Make lots of noise while your walking and be ready to deal with what arises.
