All the mountain lion attacks in my area aren't up in the mountains or even the hills, but in the hill-adjacent walking paths, usually against joggers. They lie in wait for normal prey, but it's probably the running that just triggers their pounce instinct. I just went to google to find the most recent attack near me, and it was a few months ago against a small child. And looking at it, it's pretty scary how many are against children. It's clear that size really is a big part of the equation.
Im a 240ib male. Bears, snakes, none of it concerns me as much as the mountain lion. If they we're not on usa land i would be a much more relaxed and happy camper. Only lions, thats it

When I'm hiking, that is the number one thing that I am leary about...A rare but possible encounter with a 80-150 lb cat is a no thank you. People have absolutely no idea how strong, quick, fast and stealth a mountain lion is. No contest with us, unless you carry a weapon or bear mace. Even then, you're going to get messed up really really bad if it decides to attack you. I was at a nature zoo type place, looking at the female mountain lion in her enclosure. She was in the very back of the enclosure trying to hide behind a large boulder. She didn't like me staring at her through the thick plexiglass. Her ears were flattened and back and she was hissing. She must have felt threatened by me. In literally a second maybe a second and a half. She came changing at me and hit that plexiglass with extreme speed and force. Her front paws were up on the plexiglass as she was standing on her back legs. . Then as fast as she charged me,, she retreated back to her hiding boulder. She must have covered a distance of 20 yards in a second and a half. She was letting me know she didn't like my presence. People have no idea how fast they are. If that plexiglass wasn't there, I would have been done! Like getting hit by a professional linebacker at full speed with claws and teeth.
Me and my friend just got attacked by one in the wind river mountain range in Wyoming, we were not on a trail or running, we’re we’re mountain climbing and we happened to be on an almost sheer cliff face. It had just turned to night, and I had just gotten bad altitude sickness and was vomiting and my friend injured his acl, we were just trying to climb out and get back to civilization and this whore of a cat decides to try to attack us in the worst possible situation. We didn’t have a gun just each of us had a knife and bear spray. We got big and yelled at it but it wasn’t working when it starting to pounce on us from 20 feet away we sprayed it. It worked but was just a shit show.
From personal experience with a black bear on a segment of the Appalachian Trail, I can confirm that the "make yourself look big and be loud" is indeed effective. I had the added benefit of having the high ground and having a big wooden walking stick as well. That bear did take off like a shot too haha.

That terrain looks a lot like where I live on a mountain in S. California. Probably lots of deer in this area, which makes it a haven for pumas too. I live off-grid on 20 acres of wilderness, a mile from the nearest neighbor. I absolutely love this place because I'm not right in the head. My ex left me out here 7 years ago because it got too scary for him, and it was too far from the liquor store. No one misses him here. I've learned to deal with rattlers, not as scary as they seemed at first. Most are not at all aggressive and just want to be left alone, and they are great for reducing the rodent population. Best tool is a long clamp stick made for snake handling. I used to put them in a deep trash barrel with a lid and take it a few miles away in the truck, but now I don't have a truck I have to kill them, unfortunately. I do skin them for hat bands and feed the cooked meat to my chickens, no sense in wasting anything! Now I have a bigger problem. The most recent mountain lion has become a real danger. It broke into my "lion-proof" goat pen, completely enclosed with heavy chain link and sheet metal, killed 3 of my goats before I got down there with my rifle. The rifle only scared it away temporarily even though I'm pretty sure I hit it at least once since I was within 10 ft. of it. This cat has been stalking my goats for awhile. It killed the two leaders of the herd, and the leader's son. It has come back several times, but we have reinforced the pen, and plan to make an electrified enclosure to go around the pen and add more bright security motion lights. I'm looking for any tips to discourage future visits from these cats. I wish wildlife management would trap and relocate them away from people but they don't do that anymore. This cat has also visited the community of rich folks over on the paved road 3 miles from me, where the cheapest house is a half million bucks. I tried to warn them before to keep their pets inside at night, but they didn't believe me about the pumas and bobcat up here. One retired sheriff had two expensive police dogs trained in Germany, the puma killed them both, on two different nights! My dogs stay inside at night because I love them like family. One of these "neighbors" who lost a pet told me later that she didn't believe me because I'm from Texas, and "everyone knows that all Texans lie". Well, alrighty then! I live in the Rockies and in my area you are more likely to get kicked by a Mule Deer than attacked by a bear or cougar. We have a small herd that likes to hang out in my yard and get on my porch for some reason. I've barreled out of my front door and almost ran face first into a 6 point buck just standing there ... and the last hunter I heard of getting killed by an animal got killed by a deer. The bears are more interested in trying to get into the dumpster than attacking people.

I think there is a lot of 'fascination fear' with bears and cougars that isn't always warranted. I just want to expand on the video. Personality and breed of the bear matter too. If that bear is approaching you, head hung low, ears back, and you can tell it's not inquisitive? It's likely looking at you like food. There's not much you can do here but yell, scream, slam sticks, and as the video states - look not worth the calories it'll take to fight you. However if a bear is displaying more passive signs, the best thing you can do is make yourself large, quietly and calmly speak to the bear as you back away and out of sight and risk. Bear awareness should be taught in schools. The training is great and I strongly suggest people volunteer for it.
Mountain lions in my area seldom attack people as they have ample prey. Usually, they posture and bluff to chase you out of their territory if they don't just run off. In my experience, they just run away and don't look back.
I've lost quite a few of my goats to pit bull type dogs. People dump them up here on the mountain when they can't handle their vicious dogs so they become someone else's problem.
In 1990 on the Louisiana side of the Sabine River in DeSoto Parish I saw a black panther one evening right before sunset. I was riding an ATV and it ran across the dirt road I was riding on and crossed only about 15 feet away. I got a very clear look at it and was amazed! They insist these big cats don`t exist but there are literally thousands of sightings in the USA and even Canada. When I first moved there from Central Louisiana the locals told me about the big black cats. The local high school football team is called the Stanley Panthers and a town nearby named Keachie is a Native American word meaning black cat. I had noticed the huge cat tracks in the area that were WAAAY larger than bobcat tracks and feel very fortunate to have seen one of these mythical creatures. I later moved from the river to town and a guy who knew my dad sent word to me that he`d seen the big black cat in the exact same area while hunting from his deer stand, which confirmed to me that I wasn`t hallucinating, and he promised he wouldn`t hurt it. Type in "BLACK PANTHER SIGHTING MISSISSIPPI" on UA-cam and read the comments under the video. There are multiple witness stories.
Do you have problems with wild boar there in LA? They have become a huge problem in Texas, where some of my family live. They are really dangerous and can get enormous! They don't belong here. They were brought from Asia as prey in canned hunts for rich a-holes who didn't care about the consequences of allowing an invasive, dangerous species to proliferate. The Russian boars have crossed with the native wild hogs and even domestic types to breed monstrosities.
Last week a 90 pound young male mountain lion attacked 2 brothers here in the Sierra Nevada mountains in California. One of the brothers was seriously mauled in the face and the other brother was killed. The surviving brother said they did everything they'd been told on how to scare away a mountain lion but it didn't work for them. The lion attacked anyway and it wasn't even a big lion. The lion was found and euthanized. Shits got me a little freaked out since i hike in the same area the attack took place. I'm 6'2 and 200 pounds but if a 90 pound mountain lion can take out 2 brothers what can a 200 pound mountain lion do to me?
You mentioned two things that don't make sense to me. 1. That 99% of the time a mountain lion will run away if you make a lot of noise and get big. I've never faced a mountain lion but I've seen videos where people did and every time the mountain lion was not fazed one bit by the person shouting and getting big. The lions were so calm, focused and determined. So I don't understand your statement with this. 2. Why do you say you don't see mountain lions as a threat. They are afraid of nothing. They are incredibly fast and agile. Have you had encounters with lions and if so how did it go?
I saw one a few weeks ago. It was less than a hundred feet away and we made contact and it gave me a kinda confused and indifferent look and then just walked away, it was walking pretty fast almost jogging. Insanely beautiful creature.
The lesson that predators are terrified of being injured is priceless, and it works the opposite way for herbivores. A hungry cougar will think "Fuck it, this isn't worth the risk," but a moose that's in fear for it's life won't hesitate to stomp you into red paste.
Yeah, but he's talking about people who want to go out without the need to kill everything that threatens them. I hunt just as much as the next guy, but why blast everything that scares you, especially when they just want to be left alone? And btw, unless you can prove that it was actively coming after you, you'll get fined big time for shooting a mountain lion without a tag. Do you have problems with wild boar there in LA? They have become a huge problem in Texas, where some of my family live. They are really dangerous and can get enormous! They don't belong here. They were brought from Asia as prey in canned hunts for rich a-holes who didn't care about the consequences of allowing an invasive, dangerous species to proliferate. The Russian boars have crossed with the native wild hogs and even domestic types to breed monstrosities.
Last week a 90 pound young male mountain lion attacked 2 brothers here in the Sierra Nevada mountains in California. One of the brothers was seriously mauled in the face and the other brother was killed. The surviving brother said they did everything they'd been told on how to scare away a mountain lion but it didn't work for them. The lion attacked anyway and it wasn't even a big lion. The lion was found and euthanized. Shits got me a little freaked out since i hike in the same area the attack took place. I'm 6'2 and 200 pounds but if a 90 pound mountain lion can take out 2 brothers what can a 200 pound mountain lion do to me?
I’m surprised les hasn’t had a lot more altercations with wild animals, he sleeps outside on a lot of occasions, im very surprised

You mentioned two things that don't make sense to me.
1. That 99% of the time a mountain lion will run away if you make a lot of noise and get big. I've never faced a mountain lion but I've seen videos where people did and every time the mountain lion was not fazed one bit by the person shouting and getting big. The lions were so calm, focused and determined. So I don't understand your statement with this.
2. Why do you say you don't see mountain lions as a threat. They are afraid of nothing. They are incredibly fast and agile. Have you had encounters with lions and if so how did it go?
That 99% he’s talking about is a black bear, not a mountain lion.
You won’t hear from those who had encountered one. They’ve been chewed up, swallowed and pooped out.
I saw one a few weeks ago. It was less than a hundred feet away and we made contact and it gave me a kinda confused and indifferent look and then just walked away, it was walking pretty fast almost jogging. Insanely beautiful creature.

The lesson that predators are terrified of being injured is priceless, and it works the opposite way for herbivores. A hungry cougar will think "Fuck it, this isn't worth the risk," but a moose that's in fear for it's life won't hesitate to stomp you into red paste.

Yeah, but he's talking about people who want to go out without the need to kill everything that threatens them. I hunt just as much as the next guy, but why blast everything that scares you, especially when they just want to be left alone?
And btw, unless you can prove that it was actively coming after you, you'll get fined big time for shooting a mountain lion without a tag. I've seen a lot of long investigations all because someone was scared and shot a mountain lion because their adrenaline was pumping.
