- The two brothers attacked by the mountain lion over the weekend near Sacramento have been identified as Taylen and Wyatt Brooks. Mountain Lions are ambush predators. You would never know there’s an attack, till the animal has you on the ground, in a split second, with a grip on the neck. You would not have any chance to draw the weapon. In the case of the brothers, it was a frontal attack, which is very, very rare.

Mountain Lions (Cougars) are ambush predators (like all cats)….typically striking from the rear, moving at over 70 ft per second (can leap over 18 feet). If there’s a real attack, you would have no chance to draw any weapon. Luckily, Cougar attacks are very rare. Many, many people have almost certainly passed by Cougars, with no awareness that they were watched by the Cougar, as they passed by.

I've watched a few different news stories and none have mentioned bringing some type of protection. When going into woods known to have bears & cougars. California deters people from walking around armed.
Most California’s are walking in the woods without a care in the world luckily for them we have absolutely decimated the bear and cougar population but this is now thing that could’ve been avoided if we had an actual culture that allowed people to arm themselves and be armed, but California doesn’t want that
Do you know that you can go to jail for carrying a fire arm ( gun) on some state and federal land. even if the weapon is for self defense. Your government at work. the best you can do is carry bear spray, unless they have outlawed that also
If only we handled our death row inmates as quickly as the Dept of Fish and Wildlife handled this animal.

If devices used for self protection weren’t outlawed, maybe this could have been avoided ???
The problem with Humans is that they think that nothing can ever happen to them, especially when it comes to "rare," instances. "Rare," does NOT mean that nothing NEVER happens. The word, "Rare," does not mean "NEVER." People need to understand that the word "Rare," still aligns with "possibility," and really need to take life seriously and with absolute precaution and care. My heart goes out to the Parents, Family and Friends. I wish this had never happened.
That's not a problem; it's risk assessment and I fully expect all the silly commentators to be lotto enthusiasts
@@The_Ballo I'm an SRT Officer and Risk Assessment is just a small fraction of survival. Didn't the Mountain Lion know it was a "Claw Free Zone"? 🤨
In all seriousness here's some real advice: if the advice you're given when venturing out into the wild does NOT include carrying a dedicated firearm(s), then you need to find other people in life to advise you. The life lost is not on the Mountain Lion. That's on their parents, their community, and the state of CA.

California deters gun ownership and carrying any way you slice. Can you carry in the woods? Yes but that doesn’t change the fake that the culture and political a climate deters armed citizens at every chance. Texas and Oklahoma and Arkansas people can carry to go pick up milk at the store these two foods went into cougar territory with sticks.
California used to be a very be a very big hunting state. Now the only ones parading through the woods are pencil necked liberals on their nature walks. Expect more of this as California’s population continues to expand out from the cities and into the surrounding areas that are already home to wildlife.
I always carry a big knife when I go hiking in California. The cities are full of fruits and nuts and hills and mountains are full of big cats
And in some cities in South Orange County, the big cats come out of the mountains and wander the city streets.
Or, instead of jacking yourself off thinking your Rambo you could spend about five minutes learning how cougars operate, how INCREDIBLY rare an attack is, why they happen and to who. Then you'd have a chance of manning up and not living in fear. That's such a better call tiger.
I've heard that wearing a Halloween mask on the back of your head works as a deterrent against a sneak attack, though I've never seen anybody wearing one. Unfortunately, these boys were attacked from the front. I've lived up here in Tahoe (6000 ft. and 100 miles east of Sacramento)for 33 years and can tell you, wild animal attacks are rare, though when they do happen, they are usually fatal.

Animal attacks are usually fatal? You heard that a mask on the back of your head will deter an animal? Duuuuude. I live a lot higher than you in mountains and can't believe what I just read.
So much for the theory that a lion will not attack more than one person. The more hungry they are, the greater risks they'll take.
Such a shame they didn’t have something like bear mace. Who knows if that would have been enough, though.
Bear spray works more than people like to believe, unless the animal is rabbid, or unnaturally agressive, it won't keep attacking, because its sensory organs are compromised.
Bear mace would have stopped it.
Bear made isn’t going to stop anything😂

A decent knife perhaps, apart from a little defense, just a useful tool most times. That said, with big predators there's not a whole lot you can actually do. Even people that are armed can be surprised by how fast those things charge at them, no time to draw their weapon at all.

We live on property that borders BLM.I find tracks in the mud in my horse's paddock, one was attacked but thankfully only scatches and claw marks.. We were advised by the a Fish and Game officer never leave and go for walks with out a dog and a firearm. A dog can alert you, because as he told us when alone you never see the lion until it's too late.
Donkeys are great, as well. They can warn you in advance, protect you and carry a pack.
Yes, for sure. Also, the dog, if necessary, can be the first line of defense, potentially giving you that needed time to draw your weapon.
Every year, this happens. I survived a mount lion attack, myself. It's not a brag. I ran and hid in an ice cold river that the cat didn't want to get into. It was a countdown between hypothermia and the animal losing interest. I don't have any hate for the beast though. That's nature.
It is ridiculous to see so many comments saying they should have had a gun with them. Millions of people go hiking every year, and this is literally one of the few cases of deaths due to mountain lion in recorded history in California. This was an extreme anomaly, and that is why this made the news.
The major causes of death in the wilderness are natural causes, drowning, and gravity (falls/rockslides/avalanches). Deaths that a helmet could potentially prevent outnumber deaths that a gun could potentially prevent on the order of 100:1.
You don't throw stuff at animals, that's aggressive and a bad idea.

They did hear from EXPERTS who don't know a darn thing.
People talking about carrying a firearm aren't thinking about that this is California and these young men probably couldn't "legally" carry a firearm with them even they wanted to. This is yet another reason why all the anti gun policies do more harm than not. I live in the mountains and thankfully not in California and I'll never go out without a firearm nor will any of my kids. Wild animals are going to do what they do and you have to plan on it and take precautions to protect yourself against the possibility of being attacked. Just common sense as far as I'm concerned but I feel terrible for this young man's family and that he lost his life like this. Really tragic. If I was his dad and I could prove that it was one of California's many gun laws or restrictions that made it where he couldn't carry a gun with him I'd sue the state for it. Everyone has an unalienable right to protect themselves.
Well if you can’t legally carry a firearm, then you shouldn’t be in the woods! No mace, no knives? Are those banned in California too?

Blessings to this family for the loss of your son, brother, grandson, friend. I pray that your other survivor son has a quick recovery as well as can be in this tragic situation. 😥 ❤😢❤😢❤.
so very very sorry... 💔🙏
Rest In Peace
If you go into the ocean and get bit by a shark it shouldn't be shocking. What's the difference? Thank goodness we haven't killed many mountain lions. Hell, there's not that many left. Humans won't be happy until every wild thing is gone. And even then they won't be happy. Experts are trying to understand why this could have happened? Really. It's a mountain lion, it doesn't know what the hell you are. It may seem to instinctively know that anything on two legs might not be good. You're out there in the woods, you're either a threat or a you are food.
💯
I don’t think people realize how big mountain lions are.
To loose your brother is one thing but to loose your brother in this way is just unimaginabe.
I haven't read through the comon this particular video but on others, its disgusting how many people prefer an animals life over a persons.
It’s the circle of life bud tough luck
Mountain lions aren't destroying the planet, or fighting senseless wars, or demonizing others of their own species as "animals" and "not human".
Animals have just as much of a right to life as humans!
@@PatienceLovesorry but it’s just an animal 😂 and yea humans are more important 😂 can’t believe you think otherwise
@@dskinner6263mountain lions can actually decimate the native population of animals if they are allowed to over populate. Which is why hunting serves as a form of population control more than anything. There are tons of invasive animals that can absolutely destroy the biodiversity in an given area if they are given free range
we never went hunting without dogs black labs at least two or more and at least two adults. so sorry to hear it.
They weren’t hunting they were looking for deer sheds
@@cali.girllivinnnevada8the point is they were in the woods clearly in a an animal hunting grounds.
“Technically they weren’t hunting” I guess you got them 🤡
Point is they are from Californian and California doesn’t want armed citizens. They did everything the expert said to do “yell” “put your arms up” and “fight back” still not enough 😂 the best advise to give? Go get a little .22 and carry that but that’s exactly what the experts don’t want you to do 😂
@@Person0fColor yeah- guns save everything. yee hah.
We need to stop Stigmatizing carrying protection in the forest...
Creating laws that defy common sense is what caused this tragedy.
My sincere heartfelt condolences and sympathy to the family of your loss. I pray that God will comfort your hearts at this difficult time of grieving. RI.P. YOUNG MAN🌹🌹🌹🌹
This is an example of why we need gun rights. Don't let anyone strip them away from you
Truly heartbreaking. My condolences.
I'm so very sorry for the loss of this young man, Taylen.
This drama never ends because of ignorant humans.
Prayers for your family. Prayers for healing.
God Bless this family. My condolences to them and their friends.
Sorry to hear of such a tragedy. When you go into the woods and there are bears, mountain lions or wolves, you need to carry a firearm. Even if you are in a Federal Park. If you don't have a way to defend yourself, the Ranger will just say "he did not survive" which is what this overpaid government agent said. The National Parks should not be able to prohibit firearms while protecting bears, wolves and other wildlife. Notice in the end they killed the Mountain Lion. They just don't want you to kill the Mountain Lion. Government equals dumb..
Wolves don't attack. Educate your self.
@@rbear4014 What? The link below is to one person killed in 2010 by Wolves. I could have linked you to more. Many pioneers and settlers were attacked by Wolves.
@@libertycoffeehouse3944 very little cases of wolves attacking people. Were you born on Mars?
@@rbear4014 No were you? I thought you said Wolves don't kill people now you say they don't on Mars?
@@libertycoffeehouse3944 wolves are shy animals by nature. Did you flunk 5th grade?
So sad and preventable. Have we run out of space to relocate the critters we encroach upon daily?
The fact that they ventured out WITHOUT some sort of weapon to repell the many wild animals out here, makes it kinda negligible.
