They're singing about rising above and making something of their lives at a time when life was really tough on the mean streets in New York.
"Robin recalls, "The subject matter of 'Stayin' Alive' is actually quite a serious one; It's about survival in the streets of New York, and the lyrics actually say that". Barry Gibb also recalls, "People crying out for help. Desperate songs. Those are the ones that become giants. The minute you capture that on record, it's gold. 'Stayin' Alive' is the epitome of that. Everybody struggles against the world, fighting all the bullshit and things that can drag you down. And it really is a victory just to survive. But when you climb back on top and win bigger than ever before, well that's something everybody reacts to everybody."
And they are saying "whether it's a brother or whether it's a mother."
This was no low-budget video back in the day. Watch Saturday Night Fever with John Travolta, which epitomizes this and other tracks by the Brothers Gibb.
    Nice reaction!

Believe it or not, the man in the middle (Barry) sings in a really deep regular voice. He was using his falsetto voice here. All of them are brothers. The Bee Gee’s (Brothers Gibb; Barry Gibb, and twins Robin and Maurice, pronounced Morris, Gibb. They also had another brother who had 3 #1 hits in a row (Andy Gibb). The Bee Gees were very popular in the black community in the 70’s! If you want to go down the Bee Gees rabbit hole, you can follow this up with:
    Jive Talkin a #1 song
    Night Fever a #1 song
    Too much Heaven, a#1 song
You should be dancing, a #1 song
How Deep is your love, a #1 song
Love you Inside out, a #1 song
    Tragedy, a #1 song
How do you mend a broken heart, a #1 song
Duet with Barry Gibb and Barbra Streisand, Guity, a #1 song
And if you want to go deeper: Quincy Jones said his favorite R&B song was by The Bee Gees: Fanny be Tender with My Love!
Also Love So Right charted high on the R&B chart as well as Nights on Broadway (you’ll really hear Barry’s regular voice on this song)
Shadow Dancing, by Andy Gibb, a #1 hit and was written by all the Gibb brothers as well as background is another good one.
The Bee Gees wrote all their songs themselves as well as hits for other artist from Kenny Rogers/Dolly Partons to Destiny’s Child!
They were amazing songwriters, musicians, singers, and producers! Sadly only Barry is still with us, living in Miami with his wife of over 53 years!

They wrote more than 1000 songs for themselves and other famous artists!
Guinness World Records lists Gibb as the second highest-grossing songwriter in history behind McCartney. Gibb's career spans more than 60 years. He and his brothers were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1994. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997 as a member of the Bee Gees.

Thanks so much for your reaction.
The BeeGees were: the tallest and oldest brother (with the big hair and beard), Barry Gibb, born September 1, 1946, the only surviving Gibb brother. Robin Gibb (with the long hair, no beard), born December 22, 1949-passed away May 20, 2012, and Robin's fraternal twin brother Maurice (the balding brother with the beard, pronounced "Morris") Gibb, born December 22, 1949-passed away January 12, 2003. They also had another, younger, brother Andy Gibb, born March 5, 1958-passed away March 10, 1988.
The three oldest brothers were born on the Isle of Man (UK). Oldest brother Barry got seriously burned when he accidentally pulled boiling tea over himself at 18 months old. He was in coma for a while, nearly died and was in hospital for many months. Because of this, he did not learn to talk until after the twins were born. Later the family moved to Manchester and from there they emigrated to Australia in 1958, right after Andy was born. All 4 brothers are just natural musical talents. All of them dropped out of high school in their early teens and none of them could read or write music. All their compositions were created completely organically.
Their musical career, which they had started as little kids, didn't lead to international success so they moved back to the UK in 1967. Then they had a string of big hits, until they temporarily broke up around 1970 for 15 months. Started back up, looking for a new sound which they first found in 1974 with the transitional album "Mr. Natural". After that "Main Course" was the first album that moved them into a new direction: more rhythm&blues, dance music like with great hits like Nights on Broadway and Jive Talkin' (and was also actually the first album on which their logo was introduced).
From 1976 on they went all out with falsetto driven dance music which lead to their biggest commercial success as they provided classic songs for the Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack (1977 Stayin' Alive, How Deep is Your Love, Night Fever amongst them). You should react to the 1979 live version of Stayin' Alive, too ua-cam.com/video/7niXSh7vWRI/v-deo.html Other great songs to analyze: great album tracks from the 1979 Spirits Having Flown album, the title song: ua-cam.com/video/WH_j90fCIk4/v-deo.html, the outrageously beautiful song Reaching Out ua-cam.com/video/vfHUS5Mf00Q/v-deo.html. From their Still Waters album, Smoke and MIrrors: ua-cam.com/video/MT9vRHSWNbk/v-deo.html. From the 1960's I've gotta get a message to you ua-cam.com/video/CA4CInDnTk8/v-deo.html. And from the 1990's the simple song Blue Island live in an accoustic version: ua-cam.com/video/162GlAEpfrY/v-deo.html.
Andy was kind of Barry's mini me, about half a foot shorter and 12 years younger but they were the only lefties of the family. However, his voice was nowhere near as broad in range or as strong as Barry's. As producer Alby Galuten said in the book "Tales of the brothers Gibb "Andy's falsetto was nowhere near Barry's." Andy had a lower, huskier, sound to his voice and his range was not as big as Barry's. I personally always thought his voice was much better suited to songs of his first album, Flowing Rivers. Andy died of myocarditis - which is an inflammation of the heart - on March 10, 1988, 5 days after his 30th birthday. His heart had been weakened by his drug addiction over the years which, by the way, was also the main reason for his split from Victoria Principal. He also had a congenital heart problem that was later also discovered in Barry and Barry's second son Ashley. Try listening to the song Dreamin' on ua-cam.com/video/-KdBVKcSSSw/v-deo.html which is kind of a duet with Barry. And here are the 4 brothers live on stage in 1979 doing You Should Be Dancing ua-cam.com/video/_6MR-E_Qzz0/v-deo.html And finally a few photos of Barry and Andy: i.postimg.cc/jS6n3Jkv/Barry-Andy.jpg and i.postimg.cc/TwnPh8M0/82c126fc42a35d3b737867af41338199.jpg and the 4 brothers with their mother i.postimg.cc/FRNMbwkD/b9b2561eadffee11347573c97063c2f8-zpsd89478eb.jpg

Barry Gibb…the premium falsetto! The crazy thing is that, of the 3 brothers, Barry had the lowest voice. Barry is a baritone and the twins were tenor. It was the song Nights on Broadway where Barry discovered that falsetto. Their producer heard the song and made the comment that it was too bad one of them couldn’t scream in tune; then he stated, “someone’s gotta go out there and scream!” Barry said he would try and the 1970s sound of The Bee Gees was born. It’s much different from The Bee Gees in the 1960s! RIP Robin and Maurice, we love and miss you!🫶

I was a kid but I do remember the Bee Gees wrote the songs for the 1977 movie "Saturday Night Fever" This was one of a few songs from that sound track that stayed on the top of the charts for several weeks. I think it was like 20 plus weeks on the top charts. John Travolta starred in the movie. I'm sure you've seen the iconic photo of him disco dancing with the white suit on? It's a classic 70's movie.

Your main man 😉 is Maurice (pronounced Morris) on the left sings harmony and lead with his twin, Robin, at points in this song. Sir Barry, the middle and oldest brother, has the astounding falsetto for those high notes. Robin had a strong voice, with a distinct vibrato. Maurice had a beautiful, mellow voice. Together, as brothers, their harmonies were tight and flawless. Check out "How Deep is Your Love."
The Bee Gees wrote a huge catalog of successful songs, second only to The Beatles. Some of those were written for other legendary singers.

I was in high school when the Bee Gees really hit it big during the disco craze. We danced many a night away to their music. But it didn't end there. Such a talented family. So sad that now Barry (one in the middle) is the only surviving member. All of his brothers have now passed. And yet, he's still cranking out music, playing, singing, & writing. A lot of people don't realize how many hit songs from other artists were written by them. Artists like Dionne Warwick, Barbra Streisand, Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton, Diana Ross, Samantha Sang, Yvonne Elliman, Tavares, Barbra Streisand, Franki Valli, Andy Gibb (youngest brother who died just as his career was taking off), and the list goes on. They have written THOUSANDS of hit songs, many of which were performed by other artists of all different genres. The absolute artistry and talent that came from these 3 brothers is truly phenomenal. I can't think of one bad song they have done. Everything is absolute gold.

Part of the reason for their continued popularity was the ability to keep up with the changing styles of music, for example -- from ballad/light rock to disco and back -- all the time just giving fans and people in general the music they wanted to hear. By the way, youngest brother Andy (who had hits of his own) passed when he was very young (not even 30 years old).

I've been a fan since 1969. They've been around since before then. They are a British-Australian pop rock group who got branded the kings of disco. However they started in 1958. They actually like writing R&B soul based music. And throughout their long careers you can hear it. They did not always have that falsetto sound. That was for the late 70s which propelled them to the stars. They continued to record through 2001 and their music changed though the years. The brothers Gibb. The one in the center, Barry usually sang lead, but not always. The twins Robin with the long hair & Maurice with the beard have passed away but Barry is still living They had a younger brother who was a solo artist named Andy Gibb & he looked like a mini-Barry & his voice has this same sound. 'I just want to be your everything' & Shadow dancing' are a couple of Andy's hits. He has also passed away. To hear another side of the Bee Gee's check out 'Too much heaven'. As for the video, 'back in the day' there was no place to really see videos. This was 1987 & MTV debuted in 1993. LOL That is when people started making real videos. Before that, it was just taking a video like you would take on your phone today, watching live action. Also, the lyrics in this song WAS brother AND mother. LOL

    Guys
Brothers Gibb aka Bee Gees started out singing when they were in their teens especially in their adopted home country, Australia. Barry didn't start singing falsetto until Disco Era, I think. They started to breakout until they were in their 20's. Someone mentioned about their youngest brother, Andy Gibb. As Barry (man in the middle) calls as "his younger twin" sings too. Andy joined with his brothers on few concerts. Sadly, Andy was going thru some issues with drugs. In 1988, Andy died at the age of 30 at abuse weaken his heart. I believe that Andy would have join with his brothers on full time basis. In 2003, Maurice died from complications of surgery. Then his fraternal twin, Robin died in 2012 of cancer. With deaths of his brothers, Barry is the Lone Bee Gee. Australia TV Network produced documentary called Lone Bee Gee as Barry talks about his life, brothers and family.

The beegees were great . Iuse to listen to these guys all the time. Their 3 beegees but their 4 brothers 3 of them have passed sadly . Barry is the only one that is alive and he is the oldest one. It's sad we lost this incredible talent so soon. Barryvos the lead singer and Robin also was the singer I think Maurice stayed in the back and sang the chorus alot. But barry is the lead singer with an incredible voice with different ranges.

Prince Charming the middle dude Sir Barry Gibb had received the highest music award of the US, two months ago - the Kennedy Center Honors, were the US President claims he is a huge Bee Gees fan. ua-cam.com/video/T3m1aUNTkII/v-deo.html - the Brothers Gibb are immortal an sold more than 220 million records, only Elvis, Michael Jackson and the Beatles outsold the Beegees 🤩
This epic video was filmed on MGM Studios in Culver City in Hollywood California in the filmset ruins of That’s Entertainment starring Fred Astaire from 1974 during the same time when the BeeGees filming the Beatles movie, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band 1978 on the lot at the same time

They are an excellent group and they were excellent singers. I think maybe the very, very tight trousers may have had something to do with the highest notes.😅 But you know that's all up to conjecture.😂 But these guys could really lock into bringing lyrics and excellent vocals with such soul and passion. They were superstars and rightly so. ❤And behind so many others who they wrote songs for who went on to greatness ahead of them.❤
Many movie scores too. See john travolta movie of the same name.
