  • The Quest 3 virtual reality headset is powerful, but I wasn't expecting what was about to happen with my Valve Index VR headset because of that.! I'm very torn even making this video, but I promised to share EXACTLY how I feel and what I experience on this channel. What is it about the Quest 3 that has caused me to have this dilemma? What am I doing about it? And is the VR world going to accuse ME of something because of all this? Comment on this video if you have any thoughts, positive or negative, about what I reveal in this video. Here's to the power of VR! #vr, #virtualreality, #quest3, #valveindex, #meta, #vrheadset, #vrheadsets, #vrisdead, #vrisnotdead

      @@jollyjulian Putting music in the background of the spoken word is complete idiocy. A lot of UA-camrs do it, but look how nice the ones who just talk and the background is quiet are listening. Just because you like music doesn't justify putting it into spoken word. Please don't force music on us listeners when it has no value here.

      Hello fellow VR enthusiast, as a first time VR user that waited what feels like his entire life to jump in, I have to say, the quest 3 is the best thing that happen to VR. Meta is loosing money on every unit sold, trust me when I say it's well worth the upgrade, you will wonder how they did it. Sell your quest 2, or gift it someone you love for Christmas, and do yourself a favor, upgrade, you deserve it, and you will NOT regret it. I could go into greater detail why if you like.

      I'm 66 now and use VR since the Samsung Gear with a Samsung Phone inserted.... I bought the Quest3 a few weeks ago and it is the best headset I ever had. Sound is great, view is awesome. If you like to do fitness with it, there are so many good programs. If you like to travel around the world, there are great 4K and even 8K movies for the Quest in 180 degree or even 360. And if you like gaming, Asgard's Wrath is for free, if you buy the Quest3 and this is a great game. Go for it. It's way way better than the Quest2.

      It's a worthy upgrade IMHO I had a q1 q2 and q3 also have a rift cv1, rift s, index , psvr 1 and 2 and reverb g2 v2 after selling my gw v1. I recently put on my reverb g2v2 to play Arizona sunshine and had to say I think the quest 3 looked better and that was with virtual desktop. Mind u I luv my reverb but the quest 3 may ha e just retired it.

    First time viewer here. I'm more or less in the same boat. Coming from the Index, the pancake lenses and the freedom of going wireless have made the Quest 3 my new go-to headset. However, I still plan on using my Index for online games that require low latency and for games that support full-body tracking since I do own a set of Vive trackers.
    Also, good video but the BGM is a bit too loud imo.

      Great comment, and totally can understand still using the Valve Index for certain use cases. I do often wonder about using the inside-out tracking vs the fantastic base stations for accuracy and low-latency, but I haven't had many issues at all with the Quest 3 tracking. I'm also not probably as picky (not FANTASTIC at fps games, but I do love them), and I don't have any body trackers, so no worries there. Thanks for the comment, and thanks for the heads up on the music volume - still trying to find the sweet-spot there!

      I'm very tempted to try those, I really am. I do love the idea of self-tracked controllers. So far, I've had very little issues at all with the current Quest 3 controllers, but I also don't play BEAT SABER or anything like that that needs VERY low latency and expert tracking. Closest is playing Synth Riders and Ghosts of Tabor / Onward, etc. But seems to work pretty well for me on those games. But I might just have to try the Quest Pro controllers out at some point, especially if they drop in price at some point.

      @@jollyjulian I bought the pro controllers and have been driving them for a month together with the Quest 3 and I gotta say that you really notice these improvements when you play something like the ping pong game or the new racket ball that came out which has you moving your hands around in places that your headset doesn't reach. Also shooter games which require you to pick ammo from your waist like Light Crusade gets a noticeable improvement since you don't need to look towards your waist to get ammo from it since that's a spot where the controller tracking gets lost.
      The tracking is not perfect on the pro controllers tho, and the grips they come with are really the worst. I haven't found grips that don't cover the cameras over time so it's biggest strength becomes it's biggest flaw as well. Using them requires a very well lit room or the controllers can get confused and do weird movements but it all comes down to lighting.

    Great video. I've been on the fence about buying a Quest 3 for some time now, even after using one at a friends house. The lenses are absolutely a game changer, and the improved visuals are really nice. The only thing so far that's held me back from purchasing is that I'm not a huge VR user, I have a Quest 2 but it only gets used maybe once a week. For a casual user such as myself, the price point of a Quest 3 is pretty steep.
    However, with some of the titles Meta has recently released (like Assassin's Creed Nexus) or has coming down the pipeline, I can clearly see where Meta wants to take VR gaming and it's an exciting future. I think what could make me more inclined to get the standard model is if Meta gave it more storage space, like they did with the 128GB Quest 2 that replaced the 64GB model.

    • @jollyjulian
      @jollyjulian  7 місяців тому

      I can totally understand that feeling of the $500 price tag maybe being a bit much, if you don't use VR much more than once a week or so. It might be one of those things that you wait, and use that Quest 2 a bit more over the next month or so, and see how much more you might get sucked in. All games being released now will run on Quest 2, even if not looking quite as great as on the quest 3, and then, if you decide you use VR more than expected, and want to upgrade, I don't think the Quest 3 will be going anywhere soon. Those are my thoughts, but yes, I feel the future of VR continues to look bright, even if it's not growing as quickly as we might all like, more and more people are discovering what you and I have - that it's pretty amazing!

    I've just bought a Quest 3, and I love the clarity and freedom it provides, but the comfort and battery life is terrible so a replacement strap with battery is a must IMO. @jollyjulian  7 місяців тому

      100% agree - those are really my only criticisms so far of the Quest 3 - comfort (standard) and battery life. I have 3 batteries I use with my Bobovr M3 headstap, and that works quite well, and is very comfortable. Really dig it. However, the external batteries still get depleted quicker than the Quest 2. Thanks for the comment!

    I found the quest 2 a side step from the quest one. Better visuals and processing, yes... But removal of the IPD slider and cheaper overall fit and finish.
    But the quest 3 is an improvement over everything. The ONLY thing I think they missed on the quest 3 was the omission of an OLED screen.
    I've been an oculus supporter since the DV1 and now have 5 headsets (I skipped the Rift).
    Excellent headsets and excellent experiences. Well done!

    • @jollyjulian
      @jollyjulian  7 місяців тому

      Love it, and I agree 100%! OLED would have been amazing - the colors and contrast are so fantastic. I wonder what the cost difference to us as consumers would have had to have been to use OLED instead, with similar resolution and quality? Hmmm....

    • @crooker2
      @crooker2 7 місяців тому

      @@jollyjulian Good question... but I'm willing to bet that it wouldn't have been prohibitive. I think, though, they had a price point they needed to hit, and the inclusion of OLED screen would have edged that out of that range. We know they are taking a loss on the headset (while gaining user metrics that they can then sell again), but they still wanted to maximize their market impact.
      Either way, I suppose they felt that the omission of an OLED screen wouldn't be a deal-breaker for anyone, and the INCLUSION of one may have limited their sales base by even a small fraction. It was a very conscious (and calculated) decision for them.

    I don't have either but consider buying the Quest 3 and tbh my main thing is I want to play HL Alyx. Some people say the Index controllers are the best, can they be used with the quest 3 in PCVR and what do you think about the controllers which ones are better?

    • @jollyjulian
      @jollyjulian  7 місяців тому +1

      A great question, and here's my quick response to that: I do love the Index controllers - I really do. However, I don't feel they are worth what it would take to get them to work with your Quest 3, as you need BASE STATIONS, which are not cheap, and they have to set up and perminantly in your room. Also, I don't even know what software is out there that would let you use those controllers with your Quest 3, but it might be doable, but I'm guessing it will be a lot of hassle. As much as I love the Index Controllers, I don't feel they are THAT much better than the Quest 3 ones, considering the expense and the use of bases stations for outside in tracking. The only real thing that the Index controllers will give you in Half-Life ALYX is the ability to crush cans in your hand in a way that feels more real. And have each finger tracked separately, but that doesn't impact that game play really at all. So, my recommendation - go with the Quest 3, and play wirelessly (or through Quest link Cable) to your PC. Is your PC powerful enough - good CPU and GPU? Hope that helps! Any one else have a different opinion?

    First time viewer here, came because I was curious of all the Apps in Quest 3 after getting one, so youtube does what youtube does and recommend 1000 1st day reviewers. But what I came to say here, is that I have the same reasons as you. Even worse actually, I had the original Htc Vive that I bought in 2016, and it's been gathering dust since Alyx. The Steam VR was a huge surprise to me because I bought the Quest 3 on a vim, finally giving into Meta (which I still have zero interest in, just the games) and wanted to see what VR looks like in 2023. But as you said, Wireless and standalone is the Game-Changer. I use it to play my old PCVR games, Alyx, NMS etc. But I find myself using Stand-alone VR so much more. I have the headset next to my bed, and thats the thing - I can have it EVERYWHERE without any tethering, and to me that is the difference between Never using VR to using VR several times a Week.
    I find myself chatting with people now - something I rarely do, especially in Bigscreen. And I'm quite happy that I didn't cheap out on the 128GB model, as I've already filled up 100 GB, and have 400 to go because I find I use the built-in Computer rather than PCVR (Even though I have a 3090 card), It's actually quite capable? Seen Red Matter 2 (Quest 3 edition)? It's absolutely mind-blowing what a Stand alone can look like today, and it's just as stable as the Light-House tech was, but with the added bonus of total freedom + it remembers all of your rooms! I'm never returning to Tethered VR again.

Yes, the wireless really is great, and being able to play from any room in the house, or watch BIGSCREEN in bed - all so great! And, being able to take it to other people's houses to share with them! PCVR will probably always be (at least in near future) my favorite for great experiences of fidelity, but the native stuff is getting quite impressive as well! Have you tried ASGARD'S WRATH 2 yet? I have not yet, but will be! I hear it's quite amazing. Glad you're on this journey, and hope we bump into each other in VR sometime soon!

    What's surprising is that it's taken nearly 5 years for a newer headset to beat the Index. And it doesn't even beat it in every way. The Quest 3 still has latency for PCVR and still lacks the FBT capability that the Index has.

      @jollyjulian  7 місяців тому +1

      Totally can't argue with that. I think we can all agree that the quality and consistency of OUTSIDE tracking is still superior to inside out tracking, and for anyone who needs PERFECT tracking all the time, and even full-body tracking with tracked wearables, outside tracking will still be the best bet, probably for at least another couple of years. But, I must say, the work Meta has done with improving their inside-out tracking with software updates has been AMAZING. I never thought I'd be okay with inside out tracking so soon. Still love my Index (knuckles) controllers and basestations for great tracking, but I don't notice that much difference anymore. Thanks for the comment!

    Ill join ya brother theres power in numbers, And well honestly I am a big fan of wireless gear although for VR its abit different see do to my living arrangements i kind of have to go wireless for VR cause our family hates cables running everywhere and perfectly understandable they get in the way their messy and their just another thing that you need to make it all work, That all said I honestly have nothing against the Valve Index as a headset however its price tag shouldnt be 1k in this day in age, I love what the controllers can do and i love the big field of view however thats really where it ends for me with the Valve index its super expensive to both use and own not to mention it isnt a simple plug and play experience and at this point its severely outdated but as i said even it has things going for it which ive already stated, As for the Quest 3 well ive owned the Quest 2 ever since it first came out and its given me everything ive needed to do wireless PCVR and just VR in general i love it but as time went on the problems of it became more and more obvious to me most notably the Fresnel Lenses ugh......the blurry mess and the super super small sweet spot UGH!!!!!! .........it was such a pain to deal with all of that and when i heard of the new and greatly improved lens system on the Quest 3 i was like a little kid in a candy shop i seriousely couldnt wait and when i finally got to get one and try it for the first time .................................my gosh ........it was like relief .....and not just that it was a night and day Visual difference .....and as for everything else about the Quest 3 .....i could never go back to the Quest 2 or to Fresnel lenses in general. Your getting a huge bargin with the 128 gig 500$ Quest 3 Model for what it offers, Your basically getting a more updated Quest Pro with litterly everything that the Quest Pro has with the exceptions of the Camera Controllers the Face and Eye tracking and the non custmizible Headstrap, So really your essentially getting the Quest Pro for half the amount that it costs with mostly everything that it has with a few exceptions. Its a great buy and i honestly would recommend it to anyone. And Jolly Julian keep up the great work man ^_^

      I love this entire comment - you hit on so many things I agree with, my friend! It is really hard to go back to the Quest 2 after having the Quest 3. I kept my Quest 2 for use when I do FITNESS stuff, as I don't mind sweating a bit in it vs. my nice new Quest 3. The difference really is incredible between the two. More than I even really expected. The Quest 2 is still an incredible headset for sure, but the Quest 3 really is an improvement in nearly every major area. And with Steam Link / Airlink / Virtual Desktop, anyone with a VR -ready PC has a fantastic headset that is great for streaming wireless PCVR, and the battery lasts longer than when used standalone, due to the PC doing the bulk of the processing work. Thank you so much for the wonderful comment, and I'm so glad to hear you're as into VR as I am!

    Is not surprised that a $500 or even $300 vr headset in 2020 and 2023 actually destroyed an already ancient 2017 tech released in 2019 that cost more than double of those. • @jollyjulian
      @jollyjulian  7 місяців тому

      For sure. I think we can all agree that it's a little surprising that Valve hasn't created a headset since the release of the Index. I guess it's most likely because they are a software company first, but also because I think that, should the release another headset, they want to have it be the best it can be. What the price will be, that will be the question. I for one, will pay a good amount for it if it's great, but know many people might be on a tighter budget. Let's see what comes next, Valve!

While I wait for my Bigscreen Beyond to arrive I find myself having shelved my Pimax Crystal and Varjo Aero in favor of the Quest 3 for everything other than playing DCS.
    DCS is a hobby that is hard to explain for people who don't share it but for everything else in VR, the Quest 3 rules supreme in it's ease of use, quality, affordability, and portability.
    They've really made something special here and I think it is going to take off more than it's creators even thought was possible.
