  • Meta Quest 3 has a lot of people talking. I've used it, the Quest 2, the Valve Index, and more, and have ideas of what is COMING SOON for VR hardware, so with all the questions floating around about whether the Quest 3 is a good purchase right now, I decided to put this video together for answers. I talk the cost of the Quest 3 vs. Quest 2 (cheaper price now!). I talk quality of visuals, comfort, games libraries, support of products, and so much more.
    Love Virtual Realty? Long time VR user? New user? Never tried it? This video will be for ALL OF YOU. I've put together information that will work for anyone to answer the question: Quest 3: Buy Now or DO NOT BUY?
    All music composed by Jolly Julian - if you like any of the music, please comment below. Composing music is one of my loves as well as VR!

    From the perspective of an older user another reason to get a Quest 3 headset and not try to save a few dollars by getting a cheaper alternative is the limited time we have on this planet. I want the highest quality experiences I can afford with the fewest problems. I bought the Quest 3 with 512gb of memory and then upgraded my router to wireless 6e to play PCVR games. This is my first VR headset and I am absolutely blown away and I have no regrets about the money spent. Compromising by buying a Quest 2 for example, would have been a huge mistake. From having zero experience with VR a few months back, I now find myself using this setup for hours every day. Thanks Julian for the best overall perspective I have encountered so far. This should really help new potential VR enthusiasts get their bearings to make the right decision.

      Thank you so much for the wonderful comment, and I agree with you 100%! I feel like I've crossed that line from being "young" and now being "old," and having that same kind of conversation with myself that you had - about time being finite, and wanting the best experience I can get now. If people have the funds for it, obviously we both feel the Quest 3 is completely worth every penny more than the Quest 2, especially if using it a lot, and for a variety of experiences. LOVE that you are into PCVR as well! That's still the majority of what I play, but having the option for standalone only (when traveling and such) is great. Quest 3 covers it all so well!

      @@jollyjulian Quest 3 is still fresh, and will be fresh few years to come. It already got a slight hard discount in Europe, so most probably won't drop further.
      Right after purchase, it drops approx 16% in value, since it's de facto "used".
      It can be resold as used, after a year / a year and a half ( or more if someone want's to gamble with probability of quest 4 release and sudden value loss ) for only 16% less than it's full original price.
      Quest 2 entry cost is much less, but it's already old hardware. It's value already tanked, and will tank more closer we get to quest 4 release. It's questionable if it's worth reselling it after using it into 2024-25 or further. It will drop to 50% or less of it's 2024 pricing when sold as used.
      So, if someone has the money they are willing to lock for a year / 1,5 year, and resell quest 3 sometimes in the future, at the right moment. Buying quest 2 is just plain foolish.
      Even if meta would release quest 3s or something, and somehow, people would want to save a little on frensell lenses, and quest 3 would drop another 15% in resell value, it's still a better deal than buying a quest 2 in 2024.
      I don't think than an adult, who can't afford locking 500 / 600 ( Europe ) bucks for a 1,5 year to get much better return, should spend money on such frivolities in the first place 😂
      Quest 2 in 2024, is a choice for kids who have some cash saved, and desperately want to have a vr headset, but can't afford a quest 3.

      I used my Quest 2 for a year or so and found it sitting in the box, not getting used most of the time. Don't get me wrong, it was fine and I had no issues. The problem was that none of the people in my life had one and could not join me. I gave it to my granddaughters. The oldest is 12 and she loves the games like Star Wars TFTGE. the 11 yo loves the art stuff. If I had the cash, I'd buy like 10 Quest 3s and hand them out to the select few.

      I feel the same way you do, Although I have been doing VR for many years now, SIM Racing games, and VR from the very first Oculus Rift, I am now 75 Years old and I also have a Quest 3. I wanted an upgrade from my reliable Rift S which I still have. Quest 3 has better lenses, higher resolutions, great color passthrough, and currently do SIM racing PCVR games via a USB link cable. Plus it is my very first wireless VR headset.

An undetailed BnW pass through is ok for me to play TT and boxing . Ppl who play all type games all the day can get a quest3 . Wil wait for a best headset , so can play for hours and can do office work with a comfort .May be the vr is a new normal in everyone’s life in future .We can just wear light weight googles and do better than what ever we r doing in quest3 so on..Thanks ✌️

      Fantastic- and I'm there with you. If playing only certain things, the Quest 2 is just great! We are all looking so forward to the day where we have light goggles (almost like glasses) that can do what we really love and want. I still think we are at least 10 years away from that, but that's not that long, really! And between now and then, we'll get versions of that that will continue to hint at the possibilities!

    I have a love hate relationship with VR. I bought rift when it released but the cable and video quality made me end up with nothing more than tops 10h of use in total. Loved the HL2 game, but it was a hassle to rig up. Plus my eyesight isn’t exactly 20/20 without glasses anu more. But I love the idea and where VR is going with this technology in the future, I don’t want to give it up. We need VR to become mainstream as a species. I had personally given up, but you reignited my fire for VR. Have my sub

      I love your comment here, and thank you for sharing your story. Hopefully you're well on your way to a more "LOVE" relationship with VR going forward. I will certainly be bringing more videos your way to help navigate the VR waters and point out the best (and sometimes worst) of VR. First off, I do want to call your attention to the fact (if you don't know already) that you can get lens inserts for many headsets that will help with your eyesight needing glasses. They aren't terribly expensive, and they are a life-changer. Not having to wear glasses, and having my prescription in the headset is great! I have a set for my Valve Index, my quest 2 and my quest 3. Well worth they $50 - $100 to purchase those, IMHO, if you use VR more than just a couple times a month. Hope that helps, and thanks again! Maybe run in to you in the virtual world sometime!

    Ive looked at VR as a gimmick that will take decades to become widespread since the days of the first oculus rift. But through the years i see more people adopting it and this month ive been hot to buy a Quest 3. I really want to play Asgard's Wrath, use fitness apps, and watch movies on the moon. I think the future of VR is looking bright now. Love your channel and personality. Subscribed to you for more videos!

      Love your comment, and can totally understand your feelings that VR has seemed a bit like a gimmick, then wanting to get into it now yourself. The experiences really are fantastic and varied, and whether you like games, fitness, or just chilling and watching stuff, VR provides so much already in those areas, and will only continue to get better going forward. Even standalone VR has really improved by leaps and bounds, and I still hope that PCVR will have a resurgence sooner rather than later (I have no doubt it will have a resurgence), as I don't believe standalone will ever be able to do all that can be done with a computer added to the mix. Appreciate your outlook, and thanks for the subscription and compliment! Really appreciated. More videos to come, for sure.

    I bought both the Quest 3 512GB and the Meta Quest 2 128GB. Overall I have been using the Quest 2 more, since it feels more polished at this point and it is so much fun with the VR experiences. The Fresnel lenses seem so much improved since the early days of having my OCULUS Quest 2 several years back. Didn't even have hand recognition early on and the lenses were much less quality than the incredible Meta Quest 2 for $199. Love both, the lenses on the Quest 3 are super impressive, but I can't discount the awe of the Quest 2 in its current state. Both run at 120Hz. Personally the black levels seem better on the Meta Quest 2. They both run V63.

      Love this - very interesting that you're slightly moved more toward the Quest 2 at this point. I'll have to check on my end and compare the two for black-levels. That is something I've not noticed. Glad to v63 of the OS as well - they just keep improving more and more! v64 is supposed to improve the passthrough of the Quest 3 quite a bit when it is released out of public test channel! Keep enjoying VR, and thanks for the comment!

      @@jollyjulian I've started with the Quest 1 when it was first released and at that time I was debating on if I should have waited for the OCULUS QUEST 2, and tried the Quest 2,... decided to keep the Quest 1 due to the black levels and OLE panels. Way better than the image from my early HTC VIVE and ACER WMR headset. The Quest 2 in its current Meta Quest 2 release offers the most VR for the $ spent. Quest 3 with everything I've installed and use still has over 384GB of space, so the extra is a huge plus for future proofing. I can't see a huge difference between the XR2 and XR2+ GEN2 CPUs.

    Love my Quest 2, but since I only play mostly PCVR games, I instead got the PICO 4 for the pancake lenses for only $250 brandnew and with the recent updates to their software, the Pico works really well with Virtual desktop for wireless PCVR. I am still observing the VR space for future headsets and my decision saved me a lot for my needs... If you aim for standalone with PCVR access and or MR/AR, and for future proofing for a couple more years, the Quest 3 is definitely the choice. But if you are like me who only use VR for SPECIFIC needs and would like to save on cost then look for alternatives.

    • @jollyjulian
      @jollyjulian  2 місяці тому

      A great point, and for PCVR only, that really does make a lot of sense? I'm guessing you might also not be in the United States, as I believe, we never got the PICO headset available here as an option. I was really hopeful that we would, as some competition for Meta in that area would have been good, but I don't believe Bitedance was ever able to market or sell the PICO in the U.S. And, I do recommend PCVR to anyone who has a computer even remotely powerful enough to run it. SO great, and the fidelity of games are that much better. Hope more great PCVR games continue to be made in this current landscape of standalone vr.... thanks for the great comment!

    I've probably one of the few who wanted to but couldn't at the time. Now that I could get it if I wanted to, I've been working with an artist for my 3D Avatar and looking at Meta Quest 3 and Meta Quest Pro. I could get one of them now or I can wait for the next thing that comes out. What I'm after is something that is a fusion of the Quest 3 and has eye tracking and facial tracking and anything else the Quest Pro has a 1 up on the Quest 3.

    • @jollyjulian
      @jollyjulian  3 місяці тому

      Ah, you have a unique situation there. Normally, I would immediately recommend the Quest 3 over the Quest pro for a number of reasons, but the fact that you are putting time and effort into an Avatar and such tells me that you're looking mostly for the social aspect? VRChat, and things like that? For interactions in social experiences, the facial tracking and eye tracking are very nice. However, since I don't own a Quest Pro, I can't say for sure, but I don't believe Facetracking works standalone, you may have to connect to a PC and use some 3rd party software for that to work, but it does sound like it's doable. This may have changed over the last year or so, so if any others want to comment on this who know, that might help Vocal make a decision here. Sorry can't be more help on that one!

    I think it's just incremental upgrades. But for those who are real gamers that want extra FOV or improved graphics on the games may want to upgrade. When the Quest 2 came out a little after the Quest 1, it was a bigger improvement becuz there was no Screen door effect at all. It wasn't a deal breaker tho but a worthy upgrade. The Quest 2 for me is fine as it is. I can still enjoy movies, games without mixed reality but at the end of the day I would rather wait till major improvements replace my headset... Not just incremental improvements only.

    • @jollyjulian
      @jollyjulian  3 місяці тому +1

      Totally understandable, and can't disagree really with anyone wanting to stick with the Quest 2 till a MAJOR upgrade happens in many areas. For me, the difference visually from Quest 2 to Quest 3 was almost as significant as Quest 1 to Quest 2. This surprised me, but the pancake lenses were a true game-changer for me. Quest 2 is still an amazing headset, especially for the price, though. Great comment, and just thrilled that we have some wonderful headsets, at good prices, to choose from. I’ve also got the psvr2 but can’t fit my glasses on in that. So have to use contacts. What do you recommend doing? I’m getting the quest 3 512 in a couple weeks. Ordered it a few days ago. I have a heap of games on my pc already so gonna be doing that with it plus playing mixed reality and some games from the quest store. My modem is about 5 years old so don’t now if it does the faster wifi. But my pc is connected by LAN to it. and I have a 100mb/s internet and get close to that speeds all the time. Any recommendations? Thanks

      @jollyjulian  3 місяці тому +1

      I do wear prescription glasses, and one of the best accessories I ever purchased were the prescription lens inserts from Zenni Optical for the Quest 2 and Quest 3. Sadly, they are different for each headset, but for about $50 ro $80, you don't have to wear your glasses in the headset. So glorious! I assume there are inserts available for PSVR2 as well, but not having that headset, I'm not sure. As for your modem, you may want to upgrade. The real key is if the modem you have has wifi 5 or better. In a perfect world, you'll go with wifi 6 or 6e, but I'm still using wifi 5 on mine, it's working pretty darned great. That's strictly for the communication from the PC to the headset. The communication to internet is through the hardwire itself. Hope that helps. PCVR through wifi 5 to quest 3 is a huge part of what I play!

    The latest cut on the Quest 2 price is new me, like you said, unless someone doesn't mind the optics, for 199 it is worth the shot even if it is not gonna be used daily. I am also not holding my breath for project Deckard, and Meta's library is not getting any smaller, with the option of subscribing to Meta Plus the newcomers can have instant access to a bunch of varied experiences.
    I finally had the chance of trying Lone Echo for the first time this week, and even after Stormlands (which easily has the best VR gameplay mechanics I have played yet), once again I was blown away. I am playing it very slowly to make the campaign last a bit longer before moving to the sequel. Now waiting for the release of Wanderer: Fragments of Fate on Steam... What about you, what have you been playing?

      LOVE this! Lone Echo is so great. And I'm there with you - wanting to not rush it, and have it last. That feeling of being in zero-G, outside in space, just incredible. A dream come true. Hence why I've played all the way through that experience twice (and probably will do a 3rd)! I still need to do Lone Echo 2, though! Have not tried that one! And Wanderer is GREAT. I've played the original, and I loved it. I'm interested to see what they do when updating it to Fragments of Fate. As for me, I'm playing a lot of Ghosts of Tabor lately (which surprises me), and have taken to a little game called Townsmen VR (which recently came out for Quest 3, but I'm playing the Steam PCVR version). I'm also playing a few games with UEVR mod that are flat-screen games brought into VR through the magic of that mod. Played through Deliver Us Mars, and am working through SCORN right now with that mod. Also playing 7 Days to Die, Valheim, and RAFT with their own vr mods. A great time to be a VR aficionado! Thanks for the comment, and keep Vr-ing!

I am leaning more towards the Quest tho. In regards to the possible new Valve headset, you can be sure it will probably be more than twice the price of the Quest. There Index is still selling on Steam for a little over £900, sorry, UK viewer 😉and even now, i cannot justify that price on top of a beefy PC also.

      Thanks for the comment, and love that you're still using the CV1! So many great memories with that headset, for sure. I have no doubt that, once you upgrade to something more current, you will be impressed with the upgrades, especially in visuals! While I have not used the PSVR2 (I don't own a Playstation), I would probably recommend the Quest 3, partially due to hearing that the PSVR2 isn't getting quite as much love and attention from Sony as people have hoped as far as games and updates and such. As for VALVE, yeah, amazing that the Index still sells for around $1000, or £900, this many years after release. I did love that headset, and defintely got my money's worth out of it, which is why I can't wait to see what (if anything) Valve does next. Come on DECKARD!

    Had the GO, then Quest 1. Played Quest 1 literally to death (the headset, not me), mainly in Echo Arena. Needed a replacement and was torn between Quest 2 & 3. I'm very frugal and debate for months over any purchase. Quest 2 is so cheap, it must be seriously looked at. In hindsight, I'm so glad I went for the Quest 3 512 GB. Bloody expensive, but a bargin! Not only do I appreciate the lenses, huge sweet spot, zero screen door & capacity, but I'm completely tied up with the free games Meta is throwing at me with the free 6 month Quest+ trial. I won't ever buy those games, but I played them essentially for free. I do have to agree that the original Rift headsets were very comfortable. The quest 3 for me, with the BoboVR2 headstrap, is quite comfortable. Not perfect, but pretty close. The Valve Index was quite comfortable too, but I did have to put a counter-weight on the back of the headstrap to take pressure off the front. As for the tech in the quest 3, I like pretty much all that they are doing with it, so not sure I agree that it's too cramped with tech, but open to hear more about your thoughts on that for sure! Thanks for the comment, and the alternate perspectives!

    There’s no reason to get quest 2, Quest 3 will bring you magic at your fingertips and no eye strain, netter immersion, and yeah Meta is constantly upgrading the device. I was a quest 2 user and since the last year i was amazed by the regularity of firmware updgrade and drastic improvements that made me buy a quest 3 and i don’t regret it

      Sounds like you and are I are very much in the same boat. My experience has been very much the same. It's so important (and wonderful) that Meta is continually updating their software, and working to improve their hardware at the rate they are. Good stuff!

    If I could get at least $200 for my mq2 256gb I’d pick up a mq3 but it seems the mq2 is going for $100-$150 on fb marketplace. I don’t think the mq3 is $300 better than the mq2. Meta is going to have to seriously cut support for their best selling item to entice me to pick up the mq3

    • @jollyjulian
      @jollyjulian  3 місяці тому

      I hear you, and I do hope they DON'T cut support for Quest 2 anytime soon. They better support that headset for years, in my opinion, at least. Let people know that they stand behind their products, and that you can get great life out of them, if you don't want or need to upgrade. Totally get where you're coming from. The Quest 2 is still an incredible headset for a great price. Still a lot of life left in that headset, and it's still their biggest seller!

    Only get a quest 3 if you have a strong enough PC to play pcVr because all standalone games look like crap. I would save a bit more for a big screen beyond.

      While I agree that PCVR still looks SO much better than mobile VR, I am amazed at what developers have been able to do with experiences and games on what is basically a smart phone chip. I want to hear how you like your BIG SCREEN BEYOND when you get it. My biggest concern is the FOV - worried it will be limiting, but don't know for sure. Keep VR-ing!

    • @jollyjulian
      @jollyjulian  3 місяці тому

      I understand your concern about the battery life, and with the right accessory (does cost a bit more, but not terrible), that can be handled. Great headstraps with battery swapping that can make it where you can play with one battery, and swap, and charge that battery while you play with another, and be good to go. The visual clarity of the Quest 3 was so much better that the Valve Index that I just made the switch, although I still have my Valve Index right here. May use it again!

    Is it worth going with the Quest 2. Currently, I can get the 128 for $199 and utilize a $70 promo discount code.
    I have some light experience with VR. I used the original PSVR for a bit. I didn’t use it much because it was a hassle to connect it and get it set up. I always have that mentality that I should go with the latest and greatest. You get the longer support for the device and newer features. But, I’m not quite sure how much I’d use it.
    I recently just purchased a Steam Deck OLED, so I am a little hesitant to purchase the Quest 3, unless it’s ABSOLUTELY the best one to go with.

    • @jollyjulian
      @jollyjulian  3 місяці тому +1

      Glad you commented, and I'd say that, I could go either way in your case, but I'd lean SLIGHTLY toward the Quest 2, because you're not sure how much you'll use it. At the same time, knowing that you do like to go with "the best," I stand behind the the upgrades of the Quest 3 are well worth it, especially in the optics and processor. So, if you did enjoy the VR you did on PSVR, but just didn't like the hassle of getting into it, the Quest 2 or Quest 3 will be easier overall, and about equal there. It really comes down to the money vs. time-you'll-use-it argument. Both are a great deal, in my book. If you have further questions or specifics, don't hesitate to reach out - here to help!

    It is so uncomfortable it is shocking, the strap is ridiculous.
    The PS4 vr head set is a dream compared to this rubbish.
    If you get one you need another strap.

    • @jollyjulian
      @jollyjulian  3 місяці тому

      TOTALLY agree on that. The headstrap is the first thing to replace. I will say, I think the Quest 3 stop headstrap is a bit more comfortable than the Quest 2, but not by much. The BOBO VR one has worked very well for me. Thanks for the comment!

    I would say a firm NO. I have Quest 2 and am disappointed with the games to say the least. Instead of the games getting better and more interesting, they keep getting dumber and with lower quality graphics.

    • @jollyjulian
      @jollyjulian  2 місяці тому

      Totally understand where you're coming from for sure. Standalone VR is not my preferred VR, I still prefer PCVR whenever possible due to the higher graphic quality. However, standalone VR will only keep getting better, and the QUEST 3 as a standalone and PCVR headset combined (using wifi 5 or higher) is a fantastic combination, which is what's made the Quest 3 my daily driver for VR now.

    • @batvanio

      @@jollyjulian I also have a PC standard one or whatever is left of it :) (Oculus Rift), but the thing is that the games basically only get worse, not better. If you don't count Steam games, there are almost no games produced for PC. It is not only a question of the schedule, but also of the fact that most of them are made by children for children. The meta world, apart from the fact that it is like a totally abandoned project, I at least removed it from the helmet, because it has not been available for 4-5 years in my country, it is full of only children, probably under 13, and it should be for people over 13. It was a big ad, but it's a complete failure. The best game I have found so far, even with low quality graphics, is: Jurassic World Aftermath Collection. I'm talking about games that don't have a PC version.

    • @jollyjulian
      @jollyjulian  28 днів тому

      I completely hear you, and agree with where things are right now. I so want PC VR to pick back up, and I do really believe that it WILL. I do. I feel like a lot of people who discover VR through standalone will end up loving it, and will want to see what's possible with the power of a PC behind it. And PCs will ALWAYS be more powerful than mobile, so there will always be an avenue for PCVR to shine. That's my thought, anyway!
