I bought a Meta Q3. He’s 100% right. This thing is so much sharper than any headset I’ve tried. It’s what I thought VR would be like back in 2018.
I wasn't convinced how much the Quest 3 has improved.. untill i tried one out at an electronic store.. OMG... the clarity and the passthrough!!!
I had a go on a VR headset a few years ago, wasn't impressed, my eyes just couldn't adjust at all. Assumed that would always be the case until I was around my friends on Friday and he had a meta pro from his work. Put it on and
OMG!. Now trying to decide if I should buy the 128 or 512
I was really impressed by the sharpness and the passthrough. Sadly it only worked for a moment and just stopped, and it's never worked any other time I tried it but I saw enough to be Impressed
@@M1ggins did you end up getting one and which one do you pick and do you regret it?
The clarity of passthrough is as good as a Motorola camera from 2005 for me.
@@onlytixer yes I bought a Q3 512, I wanted it for online sim racing, but then took it back 9 days later as the integration for PCVR is terrible and I couldn't get it to work consistently.
Will go back and buy one again in a few months time though, hopefully the integration will be much improved by then. When it worked it was the best sim experience I've had.
Nobody talks about the latency on Quest 3 for PCVR. They only ever talk about the video compression artifacting. I agree with you that the visual quality is easily better than the Index. But the latency is a significant drawback in any kind of action game which can not be eliminated on Quest. It does not require "esports level of competition" for that difference to matter. It's a pretty big gap.
I have the Index and the Quest 3 myself, and I've done a lot of A-B comparisons between them. I feel like you're playing up the weaknesses of the Index and downplaying the weaknesses of the Quest 3 in this video. You make some weird claims about tracking issues with the Index, and the comparison of tracking performance to the Quest 3 which I think most people who have used both will not agree with. This is not an area where the Quest 3 wins.
I do agree with you about the vastly superior lenses of the Quest 3. Easily the strongest point of this headset. They're competitive even with the lenses on the Pimax Crystal (though the Crystal's higher resolution panels give it better visuals overall). The Quest 3 certainly does have better visuals than the Index. That is the aspect of the aging Index that has aged the most.
But the overall comparison between the two headsets is a mixed bag. The Index is still better in every other performance category. So to say the Quest 3 destroys the Index is stretching things at best. It's going to depend on your use case and what aspects you value more.
The significant latency of the Quest 3 for PCVR is arguably its weakest point when making this comparison.
Valve Index was released over three years ago, actually about at the same time as Quest 1. But Valve still charges the same price for it, and with the arrival of Quest 3, it's clear that the index is indeed outdated. I got a Quest 3 today for development purposes, paid by my employer. Very sharp image!
Getting closer to 5 years now, not 3! But yeah, it's odd that Valve never dropped the price at all. Even the Quest 2 looks visually better (when running at proper resolution) with much wider sweet spot, but the Index still survives on because how it's generally good "all round". Hopefully we get something as good all-round in the future soon with the upgraded visuals.
Even with the outdated tech Valve probably looses money, they aren't a big company. They make up the profit on Steam sales, much like the Steam Deck. I really think the only reason it is still available is for people that for whatever reason need it. It's over priced but it is cool to see Valve support it until they release something better. In the Sadly It's Bradly live steam with his Apple Vision Pro he says he's not even excited for the Deckard anymore. Don't think it's happening. They don't need it, they loose on hardware, I think the only reason they made the Index was to set a standard for everyone else, which oddly no one has as good audio, mic, and needs third party straps to be as comfortable. Apple is now the standard, if new headsets come out that don't have the same or better visuals or can not be complete monitor replacements what is the point?
@@exodous02 Nothing that costs $3500 and has no access to the most commonly used content is going to be "the new standard". The Deckard also now has patents for a split design so not sure why now of all times they'd think it's not happening.
@@Enverex I hope it is. When the AVP was announced I got excited because Valve and Apple had a revolving door with their engineers, probably to help Apple get the AVP out the door. I thought this would mean Valve would get a reliable supply of the same visuals that Apple was using. I'm still hopeful for this. Maybe they can't release the Deckard until 3, 6, or 12 months have passed? Apple wouldn't want direct competition. Valve has got to get something out of training their engineers in VR and letting them borrow their's. I hope it isn't just Steam will be the only gaming platform on the AVP, I really hope it is tech for the Deckard. The Lenses were pretty much all Valve was struggling with and now Apple has some pretty good lenses. Fingers crossed Valve gets them in the Deckard. I'd pay $3k for a Deckard but, eh, not Apple. I don't even own an iphone.
@@Enverex Huh, I thought I replied to you, sorry, I guess I didn't hit the reply button. Anyway, I really hope the Deckard is coming out. Actually I got excited when the AVP was announced. Sadly it's Bradley said he got some insider info that Valve and Apple were having a revolving door between the two companies engineers in their respective VR departments. I think realistically Apple could have gone with three companies to help with the problems they were having, bytedance, Valve, or Meta. They chose Valve for whatever reason, maybe because they didn't rely on Android ecosystem for a base? So Valve helped Apple get the AVP out the door so what does Valve get out of it? I really really hope they get the optics from the AVP for the Deckard, like a reliable supply of them. This seems to be the biggest thing holding back the Deckard. In fact I think, with a few of Valve's patents, they were thinking of making a computing device with the Deckard like Apple did with the AVP, more than any other company had before. I hope this is the case, maybe Apple just gave them a semi full of cash, enough to make their own optics, but eh, I don't think so. I just hope it doesn't turn out to be Steam officially on the AVP. I hope they get something for the Deckard out of the deal and about the only thing it has that Valve would want was the optics.
It's great to see you so excited about vr again.
I have q3 and the varjo. Thinking of selling my aero to be honest.
Q3 does it all.
The Varjo Aero still offers the sharper image at all times...
All those 18 thumbs uppers are obviously Quest3 users. :D
BUT it's silly to keep two headsets. For the ease of use, it's often gonna be the Quest3. No cable, easy jump in, no lighthouse, sound built in...etc
But the Varjo has the mmmmmmmmuch better image quality hands down. Thats either important to the user or not so much.
Coming from the reverb G2, 8kx, vive pro, vive pro 2, and having tried most others, as a whole, the quest 3 is the best experience by far.
Larency non issue?
@shrkfmrdr Maybe if you play beat saber it could be a problem? I only play MSFS and some HLAlyx now and then and don't notice any latency at all, but it is also subjective probably.
I'm gonna return my quest 3, i dont like it because it feels like im loocking trought a tunnel and the sound is so cheap..
Now im interested on the valve index and also on pimax 8kx
Does the horizontal fov on the index feels more immersive or bigger than on the quest 3?
@@markus301 I suggest trying the 8kx before buying if possible. I currently have both Q3 and 8kx and I made a hobby out of trying to get the optics ajustment right before accepting that it is simply bad design. The software is nothing short of a nightmare. Extremely unreliable. One day it works, next day it simply won't play along. If FOV is what you want, the valve index is not going to do it for you. It is very close to the quest 3.
@markus301 man I wouldn't buy the index now. Super quality made headset but very outdated resolution. If quest 3 doesn't do it for you I'd hold out.
Gamer muscle, why am I wasting my life watching this channel!?
Oh it probably has something to do with the fact that this is exactly the kind of information I've been looking for, and from one of my favorite UA-camrs. You pushed me over the edge with this one. I'll be using the affiliate link later today!
What sort of small pathetic mind is influenced by UA-camrs ?
So my air fryer is awesome and I totally wasn't influenced to buy it ... And my camping seat... And my tent... Totally am not going to buy some soap that influencers were showing off....

I am still on the rift S, but sort of glad I waited so long, the Quest 3 seems leagues above, can't wait to get it
The difference is going to be huge for you. Went from an Odyssey plus hmd, and it is the best 500 bucks I've spent. Can't be said enough how good pancake lenses are.
Yes, I went from rift s to Pico4 and it just feels next gen.
I had the same upgrade! I was forced to a couple months ago because my rift S cable broke and a replacement is like 100$ Luckily I was already thinking about upgrading to a quest 3, seemed like the first big jump in consumer grade headsets. Some of the others only seemed slightly better than the Rift S
Me too 👏👏
I am in the exact same situation. Patiently waiting on Quest 3 to arrive.
Dude, other vr UA-camrs seem bought and paid for whereas you brought up issues that I didn’t even know existed (lighthouse sub-millimeter inaccuracies when viewing menus). Subbed. Also, nice to hear the perspective of a sim-racer because until now people have praised the index and reverb. Thanks!
Yeah I have to agree. Last night I got the quest 3 setup and streaming wireless and it was a sad moment of coiling up the cable and putting my index on a stand. I don't think Valve is done with headsets just yet.
I just picked up a quest 3 but still prefer my pimax 5k+ for sim racing. Going from over 150 FOV to 110 is just not good enough for me anymore. Horizontal FOV is so important for immersion for me when racing. The Quest is definitely sharper but almost looked overshadowed/artificial to me? Still holding out for the mythical Pimax 12k.
However the quest is incredibly impressive for the money and for standard VR. Such a good option for anything looking to get into it. The AR and tracking is so good. Even the standalone performance was impressive. Great headset just not for my use/preference.
My quest 3 arrived today, coming from a Reverb G2, it's awesome, plus all the added functionality over a pc headset, just makes it a winner. The lenses are just superb
Nice. I have Reverb G2 too and think about upgrading to quest 3
S65 go for it, took a while to set it up, and there's extra cost to consider as well (new head strap, I got the Aubika one with a big battery in the back) face gasket, link cable, I ended up getting a second router to go wireless as well, controller straps etc.
Having said that, it still comes in less than. I paid for my G2 when it first came out. End result, I can play Alyx down stairs away from the pc in amazing fidelity. Way better for DCS etc too, as all of the lense is a sweet spot.
I just picked up the Q3 and have the Reverb G2. I'm still on the fence about keeping it though. I may return it. Why? Because you can't run it solely on the link cable. In other words if the battery is drained you can't run it on the cable alone. It has to have some charge to run. And even on the link cable the batttery will drain, slower but will still drain. I had to stop my sim session last night because the battery was to low and it shut down again even on the link cable. And yes I'm using 3.2 Gen 2 port on my pc.
@@stevenmay5703 thanks for the tip
@@stevenmay5703 get a link cable with a usbc port half way down so you can plug in the quest charger to the cable. The main battery will drain a bit at first, then hold it's charge or even charge up.
I got the INIU one off Amazon, works perfectly, and haven't had to worry about battery life in an all day session
This is the video I’ve been waiting for. Index has done me well for now but it’s got to the point where I’m barely using it due to the screen door effect and lack of image quality. Funniest part is I can sell my index and have enough left over for tea bags getting the quest 3. It’s a no brainier for me!!
I have both. My summary is this
1.Controllers on the index are WAY better
2. Audio isnt even a comparison quest speakers are tiny open tinny crap unpess you cup them over your ears Index are still THE BEST audio in VR
3. FOV is more immersive on index
4. Quest is less hot to wear
5. Quest Resolution is ALOT better (i skipped alot of units as i needed the jump to be considerable. Quest Kills it.
6. Quest Wireless option for playing off pc with virtual dekstop is awesome. Also steam link now supports full 120hz
7. The lenses on the quest 3 DESTROY the index. In comparison there is no "sweet spot" after using the index EVERYTHING is in the sweet spot on the quests pancake lenses if you are a index user lol
Its sad to let it go but finally the index has heen replaced. Now you can buy dongles which allow you to use the index controllers on the pc with the quest 3. Pretty much a perfect combo
Woah that sounds like my dream combo :U
I'm assuming you still need some base stations for the controllers, or has someone worked some insane cross-play wizardry with the Q3's inbuilt tracking?
FYI, “a lot” is two separate words.
Nice to know that you can use the Index Controllers with the quest 3. Sold it for me. Thx mate
How much would it cost to use the index controllers on the quest 3???
Tea man, you have single handedly hyped me to get a Quest 3. Been running the quest 2 since release and I'm so ready to upgrade. Everyone praises pancake lenses like magic!
Bloody influencers , the worse ones are ones that keep reminding people about there affiliate links and meta code in the description of videos so that they make even more money from making other people poorer.
I've just switched from a Reverb G2 to the Quest 3. I've had Oculus headsets in the past (CV1, Rift S, Quest 2) so was comfortable with the software. I love the G2 for its clarity, hated the Quest 2 because I just couldn't make it comfortable. The Quest 3 is no better clarity-wise than the G2, but the massive difference is that the clarity is almost edge to edge compared to the G2's tiny sweet spot. The stock strap was much more comfy than the Quest 2, but I went with the BOBOVR M3 pro battery halo strap, so no I also have the comfort of the G2.
@@misterchippie yah small sweet spot was one of the most annoying things for me.
I think some people don't have the most amazing eye sight and so it doesn't bother them so much , but with just about all the older HMDs it would be like a tiny tiny tiny location got the absolute best image and the HMD would always move off that at some point.
Then you still had to move head in weard way to see stuff clearly.
I call it "Mixed Reality" when you remove the facecover. There is so much space to look outside...that your shoulder and arms become a part of the simulations.
I have the meta 3 and you must believe this man... its another world!!!!
Ok I am getting suspicious, are META sending you tea bags in exchange for your love of the Quest 3?
Yeah but it doesnt have the sponsored disclaimer youtubers are supposed to put. Maybe affiliate links dont fall under this.
@@employeeofthemonth1
Obvously VMvarga was not being serious...
Regardless it's not a sponsored video I bought the quest 3 and valve index , Amazon affiliate links are open to anyone for anything and the meta store link is also open to anyone.
I have also clearly said my links are affiliate links.
The only people paying for this video are those that watch it and channel members who have pore enough mental facilities to send me money each month or donate.
What headstrap are you using?
Even if they are, who cares?? The quest line of HMD's is fantastic, especially when you consider the cost. Nothing can beat it at it's price point. I own all three quest HMD's and a Varjo Aero and the quest 3 is phenomenal.
@@ericheick7044 It looks like the BoBoVR M3 Headstrap for the Quest 3, it makes the Quest 3 quite comfortable, especially compared to the stock strap which is pathetic at best.
Your glowing review of the Quest 3 might strike some folks who don't yet own one as a shill for your affiliate links, however all you say is absolutely correct and you are not hyping it. I had a Quest 2 and used it relatively infrequently due to all the ultimately frustrating shortcomings. I'm spending infinitely more time sim racing with the Quest 3. It's just a fantastic piece of kit and more than justifies the upgrade. With a really strong fiber internet connection (1 gig), I do wholeheartedly recommend Virtual Desktop, using the VDXR driver and H264+ format for the best possible bandwidth, plus Open Composite to side step Steam VR bloatware. I simply never even think about using a cable. I use the Quest 3 for iRacing, ACC, AC, AMS2 and Raceroom, plus Dirt Rally 2 once in a great while, and pretty much all in full detail on a decent but not mindblowing rig. I'd like to say rFactor2 as well, but the VR implementation is still utter pants unfortunately.
Internet speed doesn't affect virtual desktop. Its your router speed that does. Its your wireless LAN connection thats important
About the controllers and tracking. If you want better (more free) tracking and are as careless with your money as I am, I can recommend using the Quest Pro controllers with the Q3. They do their own tracking instead of being tracked by the headset, so you can use them freely - even behind your back. My only issue is that they sometimes don't reconnect after sleep and I have to restart the headset. I'm still trying to figure out the best way to avoid this but they seem to prefer to be left in the (extremely fiddly) charging dock - even when it's turned off - and only pick them up when there's a connection.
Best, most detailed video on these two HMDs out right now. Thanks very much for your input, just subbed for when the next slew of HMDs start releasing!
Barely started the vid, thanks for this, i have an index and wanted to know a comparison between the two, so very excited to know this outcome.
Quest 3 & 2 can use Quest Pro controllers that have built-In camera controller tracking which basically makes them like lighthouse tracking. Just an FYI if you need to spend another $300 US. 😊
pro controllers are bad, not worth it, they lose tracking often.Quest2 and 3 trackers are better in this case, as long as they are in view, they work well.
You need good bright lighting for Pro Controllers with the correct lighting the Pro Controllers are better. However, if you don't have a studio lighting setup then the base Quest controllers are more forgiving for sure but, I think you are missing the spending more money part of my comment.😢
😊
I really like my quest pro controllers but I was constantly losing connection with one or both of them on my quest 3 so I went back to my included controllers and they work almost as good. Biggest problem for me is that I will have to buy another handle attachment because the ones I bought for my pros won't work because it covers the infrared lights. Oh well. Technology, right?
I'm glad I waited to make the quest 3 my first vr experience. It has exceeded my expectations paired with a 4090
Ready for the quest 4!
I can’t believe it… I’m going to become a Zuckerborg. Valve, what the have you done to me?
I have been using the Quest 3 for MSFS and it has been great. The first unit had a really bright stuck pixel, and I had to exchange it. The new unit seems much better overall with less muira (uneven pixel brightness?) so there is some variability in the panels they are using. I also got the zenni prescription lenses for mild nearsightedness and they are well worth the $50.
Valve truly do take far too long between their releases of great things, whether with their games or with their hardware.
15:16 is something I shout all the time and will continue to do. Valve introduced what should be the standard in VR audio for both comfort and quality. There's no room for discussion or arguments. It's just the fact.
For a headset that's nearly 5 years old, it's insane that the Index still competes with (and beats, in several categories) a headset that released within the last 6 months like the Quest 3. The controllers are still the absolute gold standard for VR controllers, the headphones/speakers are still phenomenal (and far outstrip the Quest's tinny little speakers), tracking is still better, and it still gives a better out-of-the-box experience than the Quest does (for PCVR, that is) thanks to Meta setting most of the PCVR/Link defaults to weird values. The Quest does have higher resolution and a larger sweet spot, but it also has more problems with light leakage around the face mask no matter how I adjust it (at least mine does).
The fact Valve that did such a good job with the Index, coupled with the rather insane updates they've been making to SteamVR here recently, makes me really excited to see what this rumored "Deckard" headset they're allegedly working on is going to be like.
The fact taht valve is still charging $1000 for the index should be a crime. That's more insane to me
Heck yeah man! +1 for the Archive Goldeneye reference! I used to do the landmine thing too! Just bait your unknowing friend to walk into it and BOOM
Be intrigued to see you review the Pimax Crystal
Image quality wise the Crystal is clearly better (anyone that says the contrary is objectively lying as the Crystal has much better screen panels and on top of it the image is native) but the Crystal is a little bulky and it takes some effort to adjust to it properly, so it's not surely a plug and play device as the Quest 3 is. Furthermore if you put so much emphasis strictly on edge to edge clarity (as GM does) then the Q3 has surely the better lenses (not by much but still better) of the two for that aspect (I believe that Meta has the best lenses of all the headsets right now for what it concerns edge to edge clarity).
Pimax Crystal has a distortion sweetspot. Half the reviewers don't even mention it. If the crystal moves even a little bit on your head then you see distortions. See Bradley lynch's review. It is the most honest one I've seen.
14:27 - Thats the key to being able to enjoy VR. I have the MVHStudios Headmount and it sits like a hat without touching my face while giving me the maximum FOV possible. My eyelashes can touch the lenses, thats how close you can have it.
well finished watching and ive ordered a Q3 to replace my index.. been considering it for a while and this review was enough to push me over the edge (and yes i use the affiliate links ;) ) Thanks bro!
@@Piercy0812 how are you feeling about your purchase after 6 months?
The jitter you notice with the index is likely because the Lighthouses are bouncing off of something reflective and causing it to have to filter erroneous hits. I moved my lighthouses a bit (they were bouncing off of my glossy TV) and that jitter is completely gone.
I have light houses in two separate rooms and have also used them on other people's setups one room has nothingn refletive not even a window .
The jitter is always there , HTC vive. ,Vive pro also the same .
My first VR device is the Quest 3. All i can say is that i dont even see how anyone could do wired roomscale games that require lots of movement. Ive been completely spoiled by the near flawless wireless gaming of the Quest. I have tried wired a few times and it was absolutely terrible to experience once i had already gotten used to wireless. Its a true game changer. Every headset from here on out has to be wireless IMHO. Also, i HATE and despise Meta but love Valve, so if im saying this, then you know it means a lot 😅
Totally agree my Index has now been retired, I do miss those speakers tho'
Is there any difference in performance/FPS when using Quest3 vs Index? Do you need a faster PC for Quest3?
i bought a quest 3 before buying an Index, (both new). and i immediately noticed the difference in the sweet spot also. so much that i thought it was my eyes that were the problem, when i first tried on the index... seriously. you have to get the index in a perfect spot for the image to be clear when youre wearing the Index.. but you have so much room for movement when youre wearing the quest 3. (i never owned any VR headset before the quest 3 btw). i do feel like i wasted money buying the index, but at least i can use the basestations and controllers with the quest 3..
How do you pull that off??
I play using a quest 2. Gonna wait a bit longer but yeah, quest 3 seems like a big step up.
I upgraded from an OG Rift into a Quest 3... and I am absolutely in love with it. I'm very happy I chose it over anything else, for a few reasons.
Does the Quest 3 have the ability to do motion compensation for motion rigs? This has been my primary reason for staying with the index/lighthouse tracking.
Did you mount you basestation on your motion rig frame or you just mount it on your wall? I
Now all we need is to compare this Quest 3 to the Bigs reen Beyond!
The stock headstrap on the Quest 3 is waaaay ahead of the Quest 2 one. I actually found the Quest 3 stock strap comfortable and stable. Only reason i changed it was to get a headstrap with a built in battery.
Big screen beyond is my go to sim racing vr headset. I've ditched my aero for it. The oled panels are unreal even at 75hz, slightly lower fov than the quest 3 but the comfort is unmatched.
But.....The quest 3 lenses are the best you can get right now, you do get a bit of glare in the beyond but when racing you don't notice it.
I sold my index as it was just sitting on a shelf for 3 years. Index controllers are still being used with the beyond.
I'm 3 or 4 months into using the beyond and I have zero issues. It's a wonderful HMD
Thanks a bunch for this! Loved the small details you brought out on both headsets. Keep up the awesome videos!
On point. I own a Index, Q2 and Q3. I played PCVR sims on the Index and standalone on the Q2. When I got the Q3 the Index and Q2 have become wall decorations. I'm going to buy a 2nd Q3 to leave connected to the PC as I'm wearing out the one. American truck simulator is my favorite
I am a VRChatter with a Quest 2 and currently no full body. I also stream as well, so having a higher ppi is now a must. I have many friends (pcvr, same as me) who run index's and swear by them, but thats such a massive cost for what is, lets face it, last gen tech. With the advent of Slime VR Trackers coming within 90%+ of what vive trackers can produce at less than a quarter of the cost, I cannot find a reason NOT to upgrade to a Quest 3. I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this, but if you have any thoughts to add here, I'd be more than happy to hear them. As a final note, I run over wireless via Steam Link, however I have my link cable plugged into a power strip to support my 5-10 hour sessions. I intend to get the newest version of the headstrap you have and a spare battery for "unlimited" cable free vr (slime trackers can be made to last many hours on a single charge with the right batteries).
I have had a valve index gathering dust in my room for over a year now, so I finally got the q3, can't wait to go back home and try it. I also got a more comfortable headstrap, and my body is so ready. Should I have waited x more months for the new Valve thing? I don't know... anyway, to preserve my beloved knuckles and the trackers, I will probably, sometime in the future, get one of those custom made small headsets (bigthing vr, something like that). They say it's pretty awesome, though very expensive in comparison
My wife is disabled, and wears prosthetic legs below the knees. The cable tether is a very big problem as she can't feel the cable draping across her feet and legs. We tried that about 7 years ago and I had to catch her so she didn't fall twice in under a minute. I am going to buy a quest 3 primarily for me, but I still want to share the experience, and would love if we could find something that she could enjoy too.
She also lost both hands at the wrist, so that limits stuff, but though straps, maybe beat saber? Time will tell.
My pc is an epyc 9124 with an rtx 4070, so I should be able to play steam games.
Omg, the Golden Eye “5 frames a second when you do a hand chop at land mines” had me rolling 😂
Great comparison. The biggest problem with the Index is it's resolution or lack of, after using other HMDs like the Quest 2, Reverb G2, Quest 3, etc, putting on the Index makes you feel like you just stepped into Screen Door Effect hell!
Agreed, the audio of the Index is extremely good (same with the G2, same speakers).
The main trick to any fresnel lens HMD is getting your eyes as close to the optics and the sweet spot as possible, it's the difference of looking at the sweet spot or looking INTO the sweet spot, once you are close enough to be able to look into the sweet spot, then things get much better for those optics.
As for visual comparison, I think the Quest 3 is VERY close to the Reverb G2 for sim racing, each have their visual pros and cons, but from my experience with both, they are VERY close visually for clarity and overall beauty of the image, the Quest 3's edge to edge clarity is what makes it stand out over the G2. :)
Good reciew GM. So the extra "motion to photon" latency with the link cable doesn't seem to matter?
I mean I'd have no issue finishing in top 7 top split in F4 , F3 , formula ford in iracing with Quest.
I think if the head tracking is good an slow latency that's the main thing.
Driving and flight Sims are nowhere near needing reflexes like CS2 for example.
It does matter and you can feel the extra latency but some people can't make the difference .
What I hope Valve has cooking for us is a headset with the link that the Pico neo 3 has where it uses display port cable and or as standalone. If not they have to nail their steam link software as virtual desktop gives a higher quality output. If they give us more settings we can adjust with it where its just as good that will be perfect. Also hoping for Micro LED screens as they need something to stand out from the Quest 3 for competition. All in all Pancake Lenses and Micro OLED with increase FOV over the valve index with inside out tracking and they've pretty much got what we all want.
Did you feel any latency using the quest 3 with the type-c compare to native pc display port headset ?
i got my quest 3 two days ago and it is my first vr headset. im quite happy with it, but i have one big gripe with it.
i dont know if thats the case on the other headsets too, but im very sour about the fact that you have to go through your battery pack to power it, id like to have a direct power port.
the reason is that battery packs deteriorate relatively fast. my pc is like 8 years old and it runs like a champ, only had to upgrade my GPU once.
i dont have much hope that i will have my quest 3 for the same amount of time because of the battery deterioration, yet the quest alone almost cost as much as a pc.
i know that other vr headsets are not cheaper, but i still feel bad about it.
it was a hefty investment for me as i dont earn that much money, and i wish i could feel better about it when i think about the bang for buck i get out of it longterm
Great video GM! I love the effort you put into describing this. Thanks!
Not a fan of the Oculus headsets. I used to have a Rift S, but I got a lot of VR sickness in that. I pushed through, because I had already bought it and really wanted to play VR and race in VR. Then they announced the whole having to link it to your Meta account thing and that pushed me over the edge to go for a Valve Index. That also immediately solved my VR sickness problems. Now, seeing all the trouble you have to go through to get the Quest 3 working properly for PCVR, I'd rather wait for an Index 2 to come out, before upgrading. Also, as long as the whole meta account thing is still a thing with oculus, I will not buy an oculus headset again.
Getting my Meta Quest 3 to work with OpenXR Tool Kit and iRacing makes my brain hurt. That is until I have a cuppa.
well yes this is one of the problems also the 50ms lag compare to just 7ms on reverb g2 with display port
Are you going to make a dedicated Q3 to iRacing setup video?
Stoked for your big screen beyond review. Will send tea bags
The videos have been great. I bought a Quest 3 because of them. - But I have a question regarding Open XR. You skimmed past this in your video and I can’t seem to find any quality videos on how to setup and how it works. I get the feeling no reputable content creators want to touch it. I’m running a 4070 super with 58003d but finding it difficult to touch your settings with AC. I imagine Open XR has something to do with it. Could you do a video on this?
Not sure exactly what you're asking here, but if you're using link with a cable you need to set the Meta/Oculus software (PC) as the active OpenXR runtime (Settings -> General -> OpenXR Runtime).
Thanks for the response. You’re right, I’m confused. Open XR is the “runtime” so I guess I’m referencing open xr toolkit which is what allows to unlock the settings to better performance?
@@krisavedisian I haven't played with that so someone else would need to chime in here.
It's not sharper than the reverb g2 and displayport makes a difference - but the quest 3 is definitely sharper than the index which has almost half the resolution.
Would have liked it if Meta sent displayport over USB. Also would have liked it if Meta released a PCVR headset that was lighter, smaller
This man speaks the truth and it took VR this long to look right, now is the time to get on the boat.
I don't like the fact that the quest has no headphones like the index. The off ear headphones from the index are awesome. Do we need a 4090 to run the quest?
Thanks! I wasn’t going to buy anything expensive this year. But now I have wasted money on a Quest 3, and a bobovr head strap, cause the included one was crap. And today I ordered a new 5800X3D cpu as well after your review. Quest 3 is really good though, except the head strap, how Meta?!
I bought my Index back in 2021, Im still mostly happy with it for now, but eventually need an upgrade.
I have a Quest 3 and am considering buying an Index just to play PCVR racing games at lower latency. But it sounds like the tradeoff for latency won't be worth the loss in resolution on the Index. What do you think? Also, I've heard the lenses on the Index are definitely a downgrade.
I have been pondering getting a quest 3 after seeing so many good comments about it. Whilst I watched this vid I went on Facebook and bought one! Sorry I didn't use the affiliate link but I did get to the end of the video😁😁
The flickering on Q3 is BRUTAL
I'm seriously eyeing the Meta Quest 3 for Sim Racing. Specifically Rally. Did you ever happen to try it with something like WRCG or DR2.0 by any chance?
thank you! helped me to decide what headset to buy. going for the quest 3 due to the image quality and price
Would have been nice to get your view on glare. This is what drives me nuts with my Vive Pro. Thanks for the video.
Fine i'll buy it lol. I've been debating between this and 3 55" tv's. I'm not convinced the 55" tv will give me what I'm looking for. Every since trying the Quest 2 I've been dissatisfied with triples. Then again I only have 27" triples.
How is the PC experience with the link cable? I'm worried that the usb port is going to get damaged with moving around a lot, or just become disconnected all the time.
How do you feel about the HP Reverb G2 Version 1 and the Quest 3? I'm looking for an upgrade, mainly for sim racing. Thanks in advance!
I did it and I've never be able to get the same image quality with the q3 ! I tried many things with the cable and the odt optimisations, even with 90 hz x1.5 it doesn't reach the quality of the g2. (5800x3d + rx 7900xtx) really disappointed, I might send it back and keep my g2 with its tiny sweet spot !
@@JoFandangoYou will never get a clear image with Q3 because it is compressed but people don't understand. Get the Pico Neo 3 Link mate. Is destroying both the G2 and any Quest.
Thanks, GM! I made it through the whole thing
Very good insights my man. Thank you. I was considering switching to outside in tracking but that jitter while stationary might be a deal breaker for me (not that i have the money for the deal lmao)
Umm, Hmm My Valve Index is quite clear - I must try a quest 3. Could you use the Quest 3 with the Index base stations and controllers?
I need to know this!!
@@Rue2love I bought the Quest 3. Much clearer than the Index and you do not need the base stations or controllers. the Quest 3 comes with everything, tracking is done via the Quest 3 front cameras.
@@ratcat7668 can I use my knuckles?? From my index??
@@Rue2love I'm pretty sure if you want to use the knuckles you will need the base stations but the Quest 3 comes with controllers and in my opinion they are just as good if not better than the knuckles, they have finger tracking as well. Also the Quest 3 has hand tracking. It really does beat the Index hands down. I sold my Index as a complete kit and it paid for my Q3.
@@Rue2love I cant find anything about using the knuckles except with a Q1 and 2 and in that case there are youtube vids on how to do it. I'm assuming you are buying a used Q3? So no controllers? Get the Quest 3 and try the knuckles - if it doesnt work follow the Q1 and 2 tutorials to pair them using a USB dongle. Thw Quest 3 is soo good you can use it in pitch black and somehow it still sees the controllers. Its amazing.
Great video! Very informative. Maybe some of us would also benefit of a similar comparison against the PS VR2, since it’s the only experience I had before. Sad, I know… Thanks for the videos!
Great information. Right now I have both the Valve index and the Oculus Rift S which both plug into the Display port. With what i have, my go to VR headset is the Rift S with a better sweet spot.
If i get the Quest 3, it will be my first wireless headset, though when I do my SIM racing, I will use the link cable for best operations.
Question: In your video - Did you get the 128 GB version of the Quest 3? Do you feel that is adequate enough for STEAM gaming?
Thanks for your video, learned allot from it coming from another SIm Racer. Take care.
I tend to always buy devices with more space as I always regret not having space later on , however if using with a pc then smaller one should be totally fine.
GamerMuscle, why do I waste my life watchin this channel?
But I'm not questioning my life choices
And I do love my new Quest 3! but I definitely need a new head strap. I can only deal with it about 30-40mins at a time currently. But after dropping all my dosh on it, I've not enough to get a proper head strap for it for a few more weeks ;-;
To be honest i dont need much more than q3. Only thing i miss now is wider fov. I want as close to 180° as possible.
Hello mate, great video. What about the performances in race? 2 years ago i tested valve index vs reverb and with valve index (at 120hz) i was about constantly 6-7 seconds faster every hour race, I don't know if this was due to the wider fov or the 120hz or a lower input lag. I suppose that on the Quest 3 which has image processing via USB the input lag is even greater than the reverb so I would be really curious about a comparison of performance in race between the two headsets (obviously tested on fairly long sessions with the same identical track conditions and car setup).
If you could make a video like this I think it would be very interesting for many and I would be grateful.
Thanks and congratulations again for the video.
with the quest 3 audio ... if you cup your hands over your ears/inbuilt speakers the audio quality goes up significantly ..
just need some company to make some clip on covers .
Thank you for for this content it will probably cost me an new headset after watching it.. I'm missing one big thing in this video! Performance comparison, 120 fps in index vs 120 in quest 3. Do you have to lower the graphics to get the same performance? I run 4090 and index now mostly i acc and considering the upgrade.
I’m scared of latency and compression especially since I’m using an AMD gpu… I have the 7800xt and it’s absolutely amazing with my valve index but I’m not sure how well it’ll work with meta
Index resolution is far too close to first gen VR headsets for comfort. Especially at that price!
I doubt Valve are selling barely any of them at this point. But the Steam Deck sales are probably more than making up for it..
Tip for cable users: You can get a pulley system for the roof so you are not tripping over your cable all the time.
Well I made the jump today because of this video. I have had the index since day one. Have not raced yet but just in the Quest menu's I can already tell it's better image wise. Might be the year of sim rig upgrades for me. Still using MPPC hydraulic pedals and gen 1 accuforce base my equipment is almost 10 years old.
That was an EXCITING video! GamerMuscle, why do I watch these videos?!
I had a quest 2 and the battery drain with the link cable plugged in was too much. I just wish we can plug Quest 3 directly with displayport.
Use a link cable that allows for external power to be plugged in.
nice comparison! I have ur same Sennheiser headset! its lovely with some upgraded earpads.
I just pulled the trigger to get a quest 3 coming from my beloved rift s. I hope it will be worth it. I intantly ordered a cable with chargeing and a headstrap.
Lets hope it will be amazing i cant wait to be honest.
what do you think your eye's fov is with full clarity >? the new valve index will blow the quest 3 away as before - this is a one way street -
Hey GamerMuscle, are you actually good at sim racing?
Edit: Serious question, Your Amazon Link sends me to the UK, do you have a US one?
I hope Meta adds inside windshield wipers, (With the spray), to clean off my skin oil from the lenses, on the Quest 4.
which meta quest 3 are you using? saw 128 and 512 models
My guess it's intentional that meta is doing this. They don't really want the Q3 to be a PCVR. They want you buying there replacement strap with battery or they want you spending money on Quest Apps that only runs on the device. It was so close to being all around budget headset if it was not for this link cable and charging issues you have to find a work around with.
The iniu cable charges as you use HMD it's $25
@@GamerMuscleVideos I’ll look into that one. Thanks. I already ordered the “Orzero Link Cable with Individual Type C Charging Port” on Amazon. Hopefully it works as well I heard some of these cable can burn your oculus port or they don’t get good data rates.
how about the Pico 4? It's got pancake lenses and it's cheaper than the Quest 3
Not tried it yet 😢
Opinions vary, but the general thrust seems to be that the P4 is about 90% as good (some people say better as the strap is better etc) and you can pick one up secondhand for under £200. I have one and love it, certainly. Massive improvement over Quest 2.
The G2 is still a great headset for PC, especially in terms of latency which you seem to have failed to mention. When driving it doesn't matter about have clarity in your peripheral vision because you are only focused on the 20% straight ahead, you are still aware of things around you but its not in focus, that's how it is in real life too. I think you are over egging the the pie here to be honest. If you look at a real race car driver, they will turn their had to look left or right, they don't just move their eyeballs!
Whenever I'm waring a helmet go kart , car ,ect you will glance as much as possible to not have to move head tuns. Hans device will also restrict head a bit as well.
Drivers will mostly by looking 20+m ahead into apex / even further ahead.
But they will also be glancing at mirrors mostly with eyes , and also glancing at wheel data mostly with eyes.
The point is Q3 let's you use eyes naturally rather than having to move head more than you naturally would.
As for latency , driving Sims are not CS2 everything happens really slow in a SIM even with formula cars which hardly anyone drives.
And then the most competitive SIM iracing doesn't have good enough physics to drive reactively anyway.
@@GamerMuscleVideos I had the Quest 3 , Quest Pro and Pico 4 and i could not race at the limit like i could with my Rift S because of the increased latency ! Rift S has 29ms latency and all these streaming headsets have 50ms latency. I would rather race with my Rift S than using any of these streaming hmd's. Not to mention the horrid compression artifacts even with a 4090 . Stop talking bs pal....
@@HDRGamingHub get a dedicated router and saturate the bandwith interely
@@Icequake. I was using them with the usb-c link cable. Stop rambling about routers 😅
@@HDRGamingHub ah damn idk about that then
GM why am I wasting my life watching your channel 😂
My Reverb G2 is going to be EOL, and it’s giving me some gyp atm. For content creation it’s always been limited because of WMR. I’ve always had to find a workaround to record things.
I’m thinking about the selling the G2, but I would definitely miss the audio, it uses the same speakers as the index. Q3 seems the logic choice, but Valve are so close with a new HMD.
Not sure if I should limp by for now?
