for the melon gadget, you have to cut the bottom and the top parts of the melon and reveal red flesh for this gadget to work perfectly ! :D ... you'll find it waaaaaay easier :D
With the slap chop you should have put the round insert with the blade shaped slot in it, it’s the piece in the center when he unboxed it, over the blade inside the handle. It keeps stuff from getting stuck by cleaning off he blade as it comes back up.
AmberGriffin MH Yeah, but never count on common sense. He has to do the videos relatively quickly, so I guess he just goes completely by instinct with the most dangerous items, and only reads instructions if he's genuinely confused and can't figure it out...
AmberGriffin MH these type of choppers have been out from the 60s and always been useless. They tend to end up in charity shops. Dangerous for the disabled, and take twice as long to clean and use than a decent knife or even a mini electric chopper. Like many other gadgets they take up much needed space too. Was fun watching Barry prove this point though 😁
@@Tazzie1312 Yes, it is: if he creates any kind of seal around the edges, and the full force of that volume of air pushes into his ear, it would burst his eardrum. Does no one understand basic science?
Barry, please buy a bunch of those DYi tube straws and make a video where you drink something from a glass in the kitchen all the way upstairs somewhere in the house lol! That would be pretty entertaining
Berry, the slap chop needed the blade cleaner installed on it. It works wonderfully with that installed. It keeps the food particles from sticking to the blade. I seen it on your counter when you unboxed it. ;-) The wife and I simply LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!
Seems like you're missing the guard on the "slap chop" thing. Usually there's a small piece of metal, that matches the blades, which it punches through, as to avoid gunking up the blades.
A classic Dad joke for you, Barry. What did the grape say when it was trodden on? Nothing. But it did let out a little whine. (Cue silence, Tumbleweed passing by, etc.)
Hi Barry. It is important to cut the top and the bottom of the watermelon before using the cutter. The cut bottom gives you a stable watermelon on the working surface while the cut top will give you a more soft area for the blades. Have fun :)
You need to put the cheese inside the while tube with the grater, then use the top bit to push it down and grate it. I'm not the best at explaining that 🤣
For the chopper, there are better quality ones. There are ones from pampered chef that the blade retracts into the gadget. It works much better. I have one and it does wonders for herbs and onions.
barry forgot to put a piece that goes between the chopping blades after he washed it so the food does not clog it up, you can see that white piece when he unboxes it,
Because of the time difference...there's nothing better than just waking up to Kitchen Gadget Testing! My Sunday ritual. Tea, toast and Barry...thanks for always entertaining me on Sundays. Keep up the great work, Cooking Comedy, best combination!
Barbara Danley Because you still have to cut each piece at at time (or two at a time, depending on how you cut), and the pieces might not be perfectly even (kids can get REALLY upset about that kind of thing). And it's also still way faster than a knife, when it just slides straight through once.
i grew up using a similar device to the slap chop when my mom would make masked potates. we would use it to dice onion super fine. idk why its some as seen on tv thing. its an old thign we had for years.
Yeah, that melon segmenter, or cutter, or whatever we want to call it, actually does work XD I use it all the time at home. If you dont get a melon that has a 5inch thick rind it works like a charm with little effort... if you decide to try and slice through a melon that's mostly rind well, you're screwed.
I got the Mighty Mug Tumbler w/ Straw for my grandma a while back, since she tends to accidentally knock her drink over, and it is absolutely amazing!! She has never once had a problem with knocking it over or picking it up. It is definitely worth the money.
The no-tip mug is brilliant. How it works is pretty simple. Notice that if you pull straight up on it, the body separates slightly from the bottom. There's a suction cup at the absolute bottom that's probably silicone, so very flexible, much sticky. At the top of the suction cup is a valve. When you lift up on the top, the valve opens and lets air in, preventing the suction cup from acting as one. If you push from the side, the top is still sealed, so you are generating a vacuum, which keeps it from falling over. A great gadget. Would have to have very tight tolerances to work properly. Which it appears to. Whenever you two knocked it over, it was because it was smacked in a way that the top half was lifted up, thus letting air to pass into the vacuum cup. Still, I don't see it being much practical in a huge size like that. Dashboard size, yes. Or if you're a massive clutz who always spills the drink on their desktop.
ive had one of those melon slicer thingies. and thinking it was exactly like and apple slicer, i pressed it down with everything i had onto the watermelon, naturally i shattered the melon slicer and the blades snapped out of it and cut my chin, if the cut had been alittle lower it would have cut my throat. i cannot reccomend a melon slicer, unless you want an element of danger when cutting a watermelon.
Literally the worst type of hammer to use on a slicer. Try a mallet. Also, I reckon the pineapple should be peeled first. It is peeled in the picture on the packaging. That is funny to me because one question I can't get my head around from your early gadget testing videos is "why would you peel an apple?" The slap-chop is considered an unusual gadget in the UK? Interesting, in Germany you will find these easily. They were pretty popular in the 70's and 80's for chopping onions. They came with a part that kept pieces from sticking to the blade, though.
We have something similar to the Slap Chop from The Pampered Chef parties and it’s awesome. A lot better than the gadget you had, in fact it’s great for chopping up veggies to hide in the kids food!!! Another cracking gadget test, thanks Barry & Mrs Barry! Xxxxxx
I have had a Slap Chop for years and I love it! Perfect for mincing things, especially small things like garlic, shallots, nuts... even onions and carrots. Highly recommended!
Jeff Gunther I reckon you are the only one then 😆. These have been out for decades and up in charity shops as so useless and taking up space. You are the 1st one I have ever known to find them successful.
Jeff they are useless for folk like me who don't have the 'oomph' in their hands to either slap or press down. I bought an electric pencil sharpener and that had to go back; I couldn't hold the Pencil down steady or far enough for the sharpener to do its stuff.
The cup works with a suction cup on the bottom and it's own weight is pushing it down, but if you pick it up, you relieve the pressure of the weight on the suction cup.
@@patrickkeller2193 Proper knife work takes a while to learn, but saves you loads. Most cutting work in a kitchen can be done with an 8 inch chefs knife.

I don't know why people seem stuck on the Slap Chop specifically -- it's a kitchen gadget that has been around for decades from many companies. OXO and Zyliss both have had good versions of the chopper well before Vince was pitching the Slap Chop. Not to say the Slap Chop is bad, just that there are other versions out there and that they may be superior.
16:49, my guess would be that it is a suction cup bottom and two pieces held loosely together where when it is down the air pressure holds it down, then lifting it separates the two pieces slightly allowing air in to depressurize it. If you lift from the bottom piece rather than the top it will probably stay suctioned.
I absolutely adore watching you and your fabulous family in the kitchen! You guys are totally cool! I love the gadget videos and the giant food videos the best so far!

Would the grape slicer work for cherry tomatoes too??? It's quite the same shape, isn't it? That would be very helpful for salad making which I think is made more often than a fruit salad....🤔🤔🤔
The mug has some sort of suction cup in the bottom, which is in two pieces. When you lift it, the top half of the cup pulls away slightly and breaks the vacuum letting it lift. It's actually pretty cool.
I had a version of that slap-shop thing in back the 80's. For the slap chop, there is meant to be a plastic thing which the blades go in-between, it makes it so onion etc doesn't get stuck
Also the grater was supposed to have the cheese inside the two chambers and only one blade used, whoops.
You can see that plastic part @ 12:27 he then removed it when he washed it but never put it back
Barry ... With the melon your supposed to slice the top off the melon first 😆👍🏻👍🏻xx
To be fair, though, he did that with the pineapple and it didn't seem to help much.
d2factotum I think that's because it has a thick skin. If he had taken the skin off the pineapple it would have worked much better.
I was screaming that the entire bloody time xD
@D Yeah that's what I saw on the box, too. If they show a picture of a whole melon being sliced, it needs to be able to slice through the whole melon.
Kind of defeats the point of a labour-saving gadget if you have to spend half an hour carefully skinning your fruit before using it...
