If you make the barrel long enough, it will act as a suppressor. There was an article from Guns&Ammo like 20 years ago about some dude that made an like a 6 ft long barrel for his 12 ga pump action and it made it completely silent. Didn't have to register it either. 🙂
I've actually tried this before, Hastings use to sell a 32" barrel extension that screws into your choke threads. I already had a 32" barrel on the gun, making it 64" total in length. The noise was maybe 20% reduced, the extra weight and length made the gun recoil less, and the direction was straight into your shoulder rather than rotating upwards. The patern at 25yds was about the same as a full choke with a very center heavy shot column. The biggest issue is that the threads on my barrel weren't cut perfectly concentric to the bore, so the extension actually wasn't perfectly in line with the barrel, making it hard to hit any clays.
I believe this is why the Americans had a difficult time spotting Japanese snipers during ww2, 6.5 out of a 31 inch barrel barely leaves a muzzle flash
I'd push that out to at least 600 meters since a standard M16A2 can reach out to 500 meters/yards with no problem. In fact, in the Marine Corps, our rifle qualification started at 200 yards, then went to 300, and then 500. But, as I said in the beginning, this was with an M16 and not an M4, I think M4s have a harder time reaching out to 500 yards or more.
@Riceball01 never had an issue with table 1 or 2 with my m4. Definitely preferred the m16 for table 1. How ever I'm suggesting 500 for Scott bc finding ranges that accommodate further then 500 is already difficult. Plus we don't really know how Scott really handles ranged shots as of yet, with his current videos.
I remember during world war 2 Japanese had a 30 inch barrel rifle. U.S. troops had difficulty trying to find that sniper. Because the length of barrel, it was able for all the gunpowder to burn completely. Equals zero muzzle flash.
The arisaka type / model 38 also used a 6.5mm round. So it had low recoil and minimal flash. But it was longer than the average soldier was tall with the bayonet.

I just moved to Scott's neck of the woods a couple of years ago from the suburbs of Denver. One of the first things I became painfully aware of here is that the produce generally available in grocery stores is second rate at best. Using it for target practice is usually better than eating it. I live for farmer's markets during the summer months and thank God for Worth Farms in Paducah and Murray!
Thank you Scott for using the chronograph. I would like to see more "Science stuff" using it, like the speed of a 1911 vs Thomson and other calibers through different length barrels.
Their is thousand of websites that have that information already. They have tons and tons of information on barrel ballistics based on twists and length.

As a hand loader I'm very surprised that you gained that much velocity with that barrel. I thought you would start to lose velocity after a certain point due to bullet drag. Fascinating.
It may have started to lose velocity already- just not compared to the 16". Had it been a 30" barrel maybe it would have been faster. What I was always cautioned with long barreled ARs was that the action would unlock early, and that you'd need the +2 gas system to offset that, etc. I couldnt see definitively here, but the brass flying out didnt particularly look scorched to me. I didn't experience any issues running a 28" 6.5g with a carbine buffer and rifle length gas system *shrug* didnt measure my gas port hole size. Now the big question for us handloaders is- whats the slowest burning powder for 223 to get the most out of that thang ;)
are you joking? If this were the case, gases and flames would not fly out of the barrel, the pressure does not go anywhere, the volume of gases that fill the barrel is important, and it will be enough for 27 inches
The Brown Bess musket -- heavily in use during the Revolutionary Period -- was 58.5 inches long. They typically weighed about 10 pounds. EDIT: Barrel length was generally 42-46 inches.

@@jwseibert1059 I did a 34" with a thicker barrel and it wasn't any different than a regular rebarrel. The limitation is barrel making tooling for a tiny little .218" bore. The bigger calibers like .375, .416, .510 are easier to make long barrels for. 36" there is somewhat normal.

The AR15 isnt hated by our government. Every law enforcement agency has AR15's. Our government just dont want its citizens to own weapons like that. Our 2nd amendment, among others, is an equalizer that protects us from our government and its power to control its citizens. People forget that the only reason 5.56 was adopted was because it fragments at 3000 fps from a long barrel. It did more damage than .308 which is a big part of why they went to the M16 and a varmint round (double the combat load helps too). We're all trying to make it shorter and shorter when the sweet spot is only really met with a long barrel.
@@MattH-wg7ouKinda, modern twist rates also negate some of that. Part of what made M193 was how *barely* stabilized it was, due to the slow twist rates.
for this to really improve accuracy you'd have to move the front sight post further down the barrel. if you're using the same sight radius as a 16 inch AR, it'll have the same sight picture as a 16 inch AR

The receiver is made of aluminum, which can’t withstand as much stress as the steel pin and doesn’t have a clear yield point 2. The receiver is thinner at the top of the push pin hole than the diameter of the pin The rear takedown pin will be fine, the more important thing is if the receiver will fail
In addition to increased velocity, this also allows you to use your rifle as a quarterstaff, as well as letting you pole vault with it. And imagine adding a bayonet. It turns the gun into a spear! It's what the roman legions would have used!

You get diminishing returns on the incremental bonus to accuracy though. As the sight radius increases, the maximum angle of said sight radius doesn’t change by as many degrees for each inch added to the barrel.
As far as I know each round has an optimal barrel length based on the powder load. It would make sense that a longer barrel is going to increase the velocity of the bullet, but a too long barrel is going to actually slow it down due to insufficient pressure and friction towards the end of the barrel.
For rifles thats alot, idk if you seen the 308 test barrel video but it climbed speed pretty good up to 4 feet and then flat out to 6ft but still not going down yet.
@@sirfrydryk360 ya 308 has roughly 75% more powder to make pressure, but also 75% more barrel volume to lower the pressure. 308 isnt an "overbore" or a magnum by comparison at all.

Fun fact: the AR15 was specifically developed around 20" barrels after testing with the then brand new 5.56 caliber revealed some interesting data. At around 20 inches of barrel length, the ammo they were using had the velocity needed to create significant shockwaves in flesh; shockwaves that would require highly trained medics to deal with, all with a smaller entrance point. In some tests, the flesh would flex in a way where it would suck in air and compress it to the point of causing it to ignite, triggering a small explosion. So while the 16 and later 14 inch barrels would become the most prevalent barrel lengths for the AR15, be aware that its 20 inch option was specifically beloved by Eugene Stoner due to its lethality.

I used to have a 24in. bbl. Olympic Arms in the early 90's. It utilized one of the first aluminum free-float tubes back when that was new and they weren't everywhere. I loved that thing. It produced another 200 fps over a 20in bbl., extending the effective range by another 50 yards. It was heavy enough that when firing, your view through the scope was barely disturbed and you could keep your eye on the target. It was really good for coyotes.
@@patpatterson12 The 24 in. is not REQUIRED, per se, but the extra weight provided for a stable and solid sight picture. If I had decided to make it full-auto and use Beta-C 100-round mags, it would be a pretty awesome SAW, fulfilling the role the RPK does in COMBLOC countries.
The dwell time on that barrel must be crazy there is like 24" of barrel after the gas block. It doesnt seem over gassed though, the ejection pattern was pretty normal. Who ever made that barrel and gas block did a good job tuning it I guess, pretty cool.

Another channel did something similar to this with a 60 inch barrel. He would shoot, record the speed, then cut off a few inches of the barrel and repeat. It wasn't shouldered though due to the barrel drooping. Very interesting results though. Cabbage armor is real!

The average MV gain per barrel length is 21fps/in. This shows 24. So with limited MV readings we can probably say that this was well within expectations.
@@ImNoBSING It's nonlinear. For example, going from 10-12 inches increases the velocity by about 150 fps. Going from 34-36 inches, would likely only increase the velocity by about 5-10 fps.
Recoil will be reduced in proportion to the increase in mass caused by the longer barrel, but as the recoil is only 4 ftlbs anyway, a doubling of the mass will only give a 2 ftLbs reduction.

Fun fact, ballistically speaking, the original m16’s were given a 20 inch barrel because standard 5.56 ammunition (for the time) maxed out velocity at 22 inches. Any larger, they were losing velocity down the barrel Though it would seem that’s not much of an issue any more lol

I never thought of that as an advantage for a long barrel. That makes a lot of sense. My mind is .005% bigger, now.

With M193. Modern expanding vs fragmenting rounds like 77gr OTM somewhat mitigate this.

for this to really improve accuracy you'd have to move the front sight post further down the barrel. if you're using the same sight radius as a 16 inch AR, it'll have the same sight picture as a 16 inch AR

1. The receiver is made of aluminum, which can’t withstand as much stress as the steel pin and doesn’t have a clear yield point
2. The receiver is thinner at the top of the push pin hole than the diameter of the pin
The rear takedown pin will be fine, the more important thing is if the receiver will fail

Disappointed the front sight wasn't pushed further forward. Would've been interesting to see how that affected aiming.
The longer the sight radius, the more accurate you'd expect to be.

You get diminishing returns on the incremental bonus to accuracy though. As the sight radius increases, the maximum angle of said sight radius doesn’t change by as many degrees for each inch added to the barrel.

@@Dannymart_88445 TLDR: going from 10" to 20" sight radius is more accuracy-per-inch than from 20" to 30".
As far as I know each round has an optimal barrel length based on the powder load. It would make sense that a longer barrel is going to increase the velocity of the bullet, but a too long barrel is going to actually slow it down due to insufficient pressure and friction towards the end of the barrel.
I think projectile weight and powder speed would be the biggest factors determining optimal barrel length.
20" barrel should give the 5.56 3200fps, so as cool as this looks I think 36" is slowing the bullets down.
For rifles thats alot, idk if you seen the 308 test barrel video but it climbed speed pretty good up to 4 feet and then flat out to 6ft but still not going down yet.

@@sirfrydryk360 ya 308 has roughly 75% more powder to make pressure, but also 75% more barrel volume to lower the pressure. 308 isnt an "overbore" or a magnum by comparison at all.

Fun fact: the AR15 was specifically developed around 20" barrels after testing with the then brand new 5.56 caliber revealed some interesting data.
At around 20 inches of barrel length, the ammo they were using had the velocity needed to create significant shockwaves in flesh; shockwaves that would require highly trained medics to deal with, all with a smaller entrance point.
In some tests, the flesh would flex in a way where it would suck in air and compress it to the point of causing it to ignite, triggering a small explosion.
So while the 16 and later 14 inch barrels would become the most prevalent barrel lengths for the AR15, be aware that its 20 inch option was specifically beloved by Eugene Stoner due to its lethality.

I used to have a 24in. bbl. Olympic Arms in the early 90's. It utilized one of the first aluminum free-float tubes back when that was new and they weren't everywhere. I loved that thing. It produced another 200 fps over a 20in bbl., extending the effective range by another 50 yards. It was heavy enough that when firing, your view through the scope was barely disturbed and you could keep your eye on the target. It was really good for coyotes.
I'd love longer barrels with a medium profile.
I have a 24” HBar 1:7. With 68gr Hornady BTHP’s its literally a tack driver. No yote or cat is safe.

@@patpatterson12 The 24 in. is not REQUIRED, per se, but the extra weight provided for a stable and solid sight picture. If I had decided to make it full-auto and use Beta-C 100-round mags, it would be a pretty awesome SAW, fulfilling the role the RPK does in COMBLOC countries.

The dwell time on that barrel must be crazy there is like 24" of barrel after the gas block. It doesnt seem over gassed though, the ejection pattern was pretty normal. Who ever made that barrel and gas block did a good job tuning it I guess, pretty cool.
Really do prefer the practical "scientific" gun tests over all the silly things some do.
Like how the AKguy talks mechanics - ballistics and pros/cons of various gun features is fascinating.

Another channel did something similar to this with a 60 inch barrel. He would shoot, record the speed, then cut off a few inches of the barrel and repeat. It wasn't shouldered though due to the barrel drooping. Very interesting results though.

There's a chance it would go a bit faster with a few inches off the barrel. Alot of friction in a 3 feet barrel for a 5.56

The average MV gain per barrel length is 21fps/in.
This shows 24. So with limited MV readings we can probably say that this was well within expectations.

@@ImNoBSING It's nonlinear. For example, going from 10-12 inches increases the velocity by about 150 fps. Going from 34-36 inches, would likely only increase the velocity by about 5-10 fps.
It is linear usually within 16 to 30 inches. I agree that below 16 the grow is more pronounced and above 30 less.

Seemed like the felt recoil was a lot less with the long barrel... but much harder to hold on target. Lots more velocity, too. Very informative~!
Probably easier to keep on target actually. The extra weight up front causes less flip up of the muzzle.
Recoil will be reduced in proportion to the increase in mass caused by the longer barrel, but as the recoil is only 4 ftlbs anyway, a doubling of the mass will only give a 2 ftLbs reduction.

Considering where the gas tube is midway down the barrel the velocity could be higher if the action didn’t start opening to let the gas out so early

You can tell the longer barrel is quieter as the pressure has reduced more by the time it hits the muzzle...or at least the muzzle blast is farther from the mic.
