The messed up part is that when this movie is set, Marines were horribly undertrained. We were so desperate for bodies to throw at the problem that we didn’t give everyone the training and vetting required to keep them alive.
This scene isn’t a “Marines suck” moment. It’s them recognizing that these Marines are not properly equipped to safely do their job.
Obviously kicking in doors in a town filled with enemy soldiers isn’t safe, but their is ways to minimize your risk while doing it. And I’m sure some asshat is gonna say “if they wanted to be safe, they shouldn’t have joined the military”. You’re missing the point. You give the soldiers the tools and training into they need to be the most effective at their job. A soldier who got 3 rounds in his chest because they didn’t properly teach him how to breach and clear is not an effective soldier.

I'm not military but I've read a lot. I cant recall where but there is somewhere I've read that if a soldier that believes he is protected he is way better off than the one scared shitless to make a move. If that soldier knows someone like Chris Kyle is banging on a pipe above....he is more likely to do his job quicker and more proficient. If they think noone is watching, they can clam up, second guess, wait to long, ect. Just my 2 cents worth.

It makes sense. Being scared and panicked makes you prone to making mistakes, which can get himself or his teammates killed. If you have that “invincible” confidence, you’re subconsciously more willing to let your instincts auto pilot the training that was hammered into you.

That’s exactly why people say to just take a deep breath and do whatever you need to do without thinking. Human brains are no different than any other animal, when you delay or freeze, you die. Because humans aren’t used to being prey anymore, our brains have to be trained to act more on instinct and less on emotion.

Each branch has their specialty. Navy controls the water, Air Force controls the skies, Army controls the land, Marines control the enemy. There is a lot of overlap, but this is a very simplistic view of what you are signing up for when you choose what branch to enlist in.

Chris Kyle a 'hate filled killer'
Eastwood's film depicts Chris Kyle (played by Bradley Cooper) as a conflicted character, struggling with the emotional impact of killing, but Lindy West in The Guardian writes: "The real American Sniper was a hate-filled killer. Why are simplistic patriots treating him as a hero?" West admits American Sniper is effective as a piece of cinema, but "even a cursory look into the film's backstory raises disturbing questions about which stories we choose to codify into truth". She notes that the real Kyle reportedly described killing as "fun", something he "loved" and wrote in his biography: "I couldn't give a flying fuck about the Iraqis."
    Kyle was not modest
Cooper portrays Kyle as a modest, self-effacing man who discouraged talk of his status as a legend, but the real Kyle was reportedly happy to trade on his reputation and even embellish the tale. The Daily Telegraph reports that after leaving the military in 2009, Kyle went from being "a faceless killer to his enemies" to "a minor celebrity in the US, featuring on the cover of Soldier of Fortune magazine and appearing on chat-shows". The Telegraph adds that "the biggest feeder of the legend was himself". As well as setting up his own successful military training company, he also featured in reality TV show Stars Earn Stripes.
    Kyle lied a lot
Amy Nicholson in Slate calls American Sniper "one of the most mendacious movies of 2014". Nicholson admits Clint Eastwood was caught in a trap because his subject, Chris Kyle, "lied a lot". In Kyle's autobiography he claimed to have killed two carjackers in Texas, sniped at looters during Hurricane Katrina, and punched a former governor, Jesse Ventura, in the face. None of that was true, says Nicholson, but instead of expose him as a liar, Eastwood leaves out that part of the story. But when a film erases the fact that its subject was a fabricator," says Nicholson "then that itself is a lie."
