@@AlexSmith-tz2lf No need to do the D.O.P.E. on that one lol, you use it cus it's quicker but essentially it can be done the hard way with mental math as well. He gives you an estimated height of the object (Obj), he gives you an actual height of the image (Img), he knows the distance his eye is from his scope (b). He wants to know the distance from his scope to the target (v). Magnification N = Img/Obj = b/v -> v = b*Obj/Img, neglects inaccuracies of the scope but for theory, job done. It's very simple math to do on the fly. Now what he did there was take an experimentally established scope constant (B) including both b and all the inaccuracies of this specific rifle and scope he's working with, the offset from the scope to his barrel, thick lens corrections, probably some factors you wouldn't even think of but don't matter now since it's experimental data that includes all of that. Then he says okay now v=B*Obj/Img because that's what it's going to hit like in reality. He might have very well written down that constant in his D.O.P.E. that sounds like a smart thing to do in case your memory goes hazy, but he still did the same maths regardless in this instance.

@@erasmus_locke Uh, because that is a fair point? He said the gun was so heavy that the gun should have been carried in two separate parts. The guy is moving with around four-gallon paint cans of weight for miles like it weighed nothing. Doesn't matter if you are a trained soldier or not, you would be absolutely wiped. Sure, he should have probably actually reviewed the sniper shooting (unless it wasn't part of the scene, I didn't watch the movie), but that is a fair point. Guns are a LOT heavier than they look.
The other scary thing he forgot to mention with saving private ryan is the fact that in order for a scope shot to work, the enemy sniper has to be dialed in on you perfectly too. It has been recorded on happening, once and only once. That means you both are staring at each other and you pulled the trigger first. You would have literally been a fraction of a second from death.
For that to happen, shouldnt you actually aim the Gun of your target to allign the Scope for that shot? If the Angle is off even by one millimeter, you just crush the scope and nothing else.
Eh less than that tight. You would not try and intentionally shoot through a scope, so for it to happen it would be a guy turning to face you the second you fired. You definitely had at least a second or two before he truly reacted and tried shooting.
@@fearedjames no it is that tight. The lenses are curved inside that scope. Yes no sniper would ever intentionally aim there but they might be going for a headshot and the bullet happened to hit the scope. In order for that bullet to make it through the scope it has to hit exactly square on all lenses. Which also means the lenses in the hit scope have to be mounted perfect. Myth Busters did an amazing teat on this to show how hard it is to get a bullet to go through one.
Kinda except they can't take their hands off the gun, they have to do it all in their head. You can see him do that when explaining the little dots on the scope.
You may want to read about Siberian hunters turned snipers during WW2. No optics, basic model of a rifle - squirrel into the eye to preserve the fur. Nazi hated them.
I love how he broke down the one-mile shot and just rolled his eyes when talking about all the factors, like rotation of the planet, wind (here, there, in between here and there), humidity, elevation, drop. You could take the same shot from a machine, and three bullets would land fifty feet from each other. But, it's Hollywood, and of course it might have happened with a ton of luck.
Easily one of my favorite reads, this guy really gives you the atmosphere and situation of a sniper. He captures the reality of combat and the immense amount of responsibility a sniper feels over their unit and their brothers and protecting him. Alot of the time a Sniper team can clear or end a threat before it gets to their guys, and that role is extremely important.
Funny part is, you can tell he didn't even have to think about it. He's done that calculation with that formula so many times that it just flowed out. Crazy cool.
Its collectively part of situational awarness. Th military in general and combat ops more specifically teach it from the time you enter basic training. His math was part of his daily situation, a crypto would also do math but it would be binary, a mechanic would be torque ratios or fuel consumption, a cook the number of diners to the ratio of ingredients (military cookbooks look more like math texts). The modern military is more than just kill people and break things. (though thats usually the outcome)
That's actually pretty easy when you do it all the time, like the formulas they give you for knowing the distance you should stay away from other vehicles for driving licence. Trick being that for accuracy they usually don't use the dumbed down formulas with approximates. Being able to do mental calculation easily I was much more impressed by the DOPE part: "you can report to your DOPE so that you have reference". I wasn't thinking these guys would go to such ends of taking notes on individual shots in a theater of operation. Or they have really good memory and report these back later.
The formula for estimating range using mil dots is as follows: Range (in yards) = Size of Target (in inches) / Size of Target (in inches per mil) Here's a breakdown of the steps: Measure the size of the target in inches. In your example, the target is 40 inches tall. Determine the size of one mil. In the US military, the standard size is often considered to be 3.6 inches per mil. However, mil-dot scopes may have different subtensions (the size of the mils), so it's essential to know the specific subtension of your scope. Let's assume your scope uses 3.6 inches per mil. Divide the size of the target in inches by the size of one mil to get the range in yards: Range (in yards) = 40 inches / (3.6 inches/mil) = 11.11 yards per mil Now, if you said the target appeared 2 mildots high in your scope, you can calculate the range: Range (in yards) = 2 mildots x 11.11 yards/mil = 22.22 yards So, if the target is 2 mildots high in your scope, it is approximately 22.22 yards away. In your provided formula with X as 25.4, it seems like the conversion from inches to millimeters is happening.
I like how he explains that it's completely impossible to shoot the gun out of someone's hand at such a far range but still thinks it's a five out of 10 but then as soon as he sees a black scope and a white snowy field he gives it a two
X2, and a 20x scope at even 200 yards is quite shaky looking, even from a bench. Heck, even peep sights on my Win 94 at 110 yards to shoot a ram (reduced size) with the back sitting 7 inches high, is shaky, as we shoot standing and no support for the silhouette matches. As a person who grew up shooting and does various competitions for fun, I just shake my head at what people think they know from the movies, media, and news.
@@oceanhome2023 as soon as you get a good natural position, you relax, you breath slowly. Then your heartbeat starts screwing up the picture. Then you just shoot between the heartbeats. So before I say this I know it's a bit of a far fetched comparison since this game isn't realistic but in sniper elite, when you play tactically and find a good position, you can pretty easily take out multiple guys even on higher difficulties, just pick your targets, learn the range, find out who is and isn't safe to shoot, then open fire when the time time is right, IRL would probably be more complicated but judging by how Nicholas rated that seen I don't think it would be that hard for a professional

You just have to break it down. 10x25 is 250. Times that by 4, you get 1000. Then 4x4 is 16. (this is the same as doing 40x0.4, just simpler to do quickly) Add it up, 1016.
I feel like videos like this serve at least four different purposes at once. They entertain, they inform, they demonstrate just how uninformed most people are who have not had extensive training and experience with a complicated job, especially combat related, and they really show just how much research, time, and care go into getting a fictional depiction right.
Everyone "thinks" their a sniper, until they get behind the gun at an actual distance where the mathematics come in, (bullet drop, wind sheer, etc.) Then it's always the guns fault. It's not sighted properly, the ammo is wrong, oh, the wind picked up on a breeze less day. 😂😂 Seen it a hundred times. Patience is the snipers best friend.

When he says. "People don't normally look like that when they get hit with a 50 cal. It's usually just a puff of moisture and mist" I wonder how many times he's seen that.
Not many, I’ve seen it once, but when the U.S military uses a 50 cal, it’s meant for vehicles, it’s too big of a rifle, you can’t conceal it that well, it’s too heavy, it’s too loud, everyone will hear you. It’s just impractical, but it is just a mist when it is used for an individual
Not too many probably, generally the barrett 50 cal is used for anti material rifle, meaning building and things like radio where you need to really damage it to disable it, it’s not as pinpoint accurate as other rifles and most rifles for precision shots are bolt action because they’re the most consistent

Another formula, using a Mil-radian reticle is: {(Height of target x 1000)/number of Mil-dots on target} Height of target is calculated in yards or meters. A six foot tall male is 2 yards tall, or, 1.7 meters tall. Next to change range to target in either Mil-radians (M-rads) or Minutes of Angle (MOA). For yards: M-rads = 3.6 inches; MOA = 1.047 inches. For meters: M-rads = 10cm; MOA = 2.91cm Multiply one of these constants by the distance to target in 100 yard units, or, 100 meter units. Example: you have 500 yard target. There are five each 100 yard units. So for M-rads turrets. 5 x 3.6 = 18. Next get the ballistic drop of the bullet you are using. We will use the .308 Winchester bullet, 175 grain, boat tail, match grade, FMJ. There is 63 inches of drop in 500 yards. Calculation is 63 ÷ 18 = 3.5. Index 3.5 Mils on the top turret.

He used his D.O.P.E.
I'm sure if you start practicing, you can be just as good. It's not calculus or anything

The other scary thing he forgot to mention with saving private ryan is the fact that in order for a scope shot to work, the enemy sniper has to be dialed in on you perfectly too. That shot was debunked in MYTH BUSTER. You can't fight math.
@@leoperidot482Apparently only because a different scope (a modern type) was being used which was unlike the one that Carlos Hathcock used.

Funny part is, you can tell he didn't even have to think about it. He's done that calculation with that formula so many times that it just flowed out. Crazy cool.
TRIGGER TRIGONOMETRY!!

The formula for estimating range using mil dots is as follows:
Range (in yards) = Size of Target (in inches) / Size of Target (in inches per mil)
Here's a breakdown of the steps:
Measure the size of the target in inches.
Divide the size of the target in inches by the size of one mil to get the range in yards:
Range (in yards) = 40 inches / (3.6 inches/mil) = 11.11 yards per mil
Now, if you said the target appeared 2 mildots high in your scope, you can calculate the range:
Range (in yards) = 2 mildots x 11.11 yards/mil = 22.22 yards
So, if the target is 2 mildots high in your scope, it is approximately 22.22 yards away.
In your provided formula with X as 25.4, it seems like the conversion from inches to millimeters is happening.

I mean, shooting a very specific round, from a specific gun with a specific scope at a specific distance and having it get carried by the wind, gravity, and possibly the rotation of the Earth is going to require a little bit of work if you expect to hit anything at all, ever, if it's any smaller than the side of a barn.

Real Talk… literally.

Another formula, using a Mil-radian reticle is:
{(Height of target x 1000)/number of Mil-dots on target}
Height of target is calculated in yards or meters. A six foot tall male is 2 yards tall, or, 1.7 meters tall.
Next to change range to target in either Mil-radians (M-rads) or Minutes of Angle (MOA).
For yards: M-rads = 3.6 inches; MOA = 1.047 inches.
For meters: M-rads = 10cm; MOA = 2.91cm
Multiply one of these constants by the distance to target in 100 yard units, or, 100 meter units.
😂

@@ryanmclark82 Its basically all it takes to make a long distance shot. I know there is a hell of a lot more to it than just making the shot. But, everything about the shot itself can be broken down in terms of maths, and that is what allows them to make these long range shots so consistently.
