Chopping up 'PLATINUM MINT' Monstera deliciosa | Propagation Plant Chores

  • G'day, guys! In today's video, I chop and propagate one my large form 'Platinum Mint' Monstera deliciosa. At least, that's what I've been told it is. It's probably the rarest Monstera deliciosa I own (so far :P). I'm a huge fan of mint Monsteras, but this girl needs to be chopped, propped, and sold, so I can get a decent return on this investment plant!

    Pete, don't worry about the length.👍
    I live for long form content.
    I was going to say maybe soak the rootball first and spray it down after to remove any more soil, but I think you've got it handled nicely.
    From my own experience root-pruning is most beneficial if the plant is going back into the exact same pot, with the desired effect of a more miniature/compact plant. So for the chop+prop+sale, roots are better left intact for the plant to grow out.

    • @petevsplants7516
      @petevsplants7516  Рік тому +1

      Thanks, James! Yeah, I think you're right re: root pruning. I just keep wondering what happens once you size these pots up for monstera to the point they're unmanageable lol.

    • @jamesparadigm
      @jamesparadigm Рік тому

      @@petevsplants7516 at that point, it might be easier to grow it as a true epiphyte. Skip the pot entirely 😆

    Feedback: I do enjoy longer plant videos :D
    A few months ago I decided to save our office Schefflera from spider mites and took it home to repot it. It was so massively root-bound, I had to cut the pot off of it. I also gave it a hose down in the shower and since there was also some root rot, it had barely any roots left when I was done with it. 😅
    But after a few days in fresh soil it recovered and now even shoots out two buds... o_O I didn't even know Scheffleras could do that because I've never seen it before. Now patiently waiting for the ones I got sitting at home to also shoot out buds xD
    However, even if I rescued this plant, I murdered our pothos that was also desperately in need of some care.
    You can't always win, right? 🤷‍♀ 😄 (I managed to rescue some cuttings though and now I'm waiting for them to be ready to make our meeting room green again ^^)

    The length is fine. Nice plant, and better than the expensive one you showed, that one looks ill.

    She's a beautiful plant Pete and obviously that method of air layer propping with a pot of normalish medium works wonders! Purely for your entertainment I will share that I had someone who couldn't see my screen walk in at around the 14:25 mark, they looked horrified and left quickly. 🤣 Which put my mind firmly into the gutter for the rest of the video making it all the more gut bustlingly hilarious when you made that comment later on. Honestly though it's a planty video there's going to be some dirt. On a totally different topic yes longer ones are better. *said with a totally straight face.*

    You can put the whole root bound ball in a large bucket of water (or the sink) and shake shake shake. Usually most of the inner dirt will come out with some coaxing. But a lot easier than just going at it dry! Hehe! 😜

    I Hope m’y monsteras gonna be okay. I got mine from a big box store back in January. Not the mint (I wish). I had two plants in one pot and they were actually doing well but I should’ve transplanted them a LONG time ago. It was in 100 peat moss , I mixed a chunky airoid mix and went ahead and started taking the roots apart. All the big major roots made it but the fine secondary roots didn’t . I planted them both in their new containers and hoping they’ll be okay .

    Hi Pete! First off, you just taught me about geniculum, which confirmed I do have a wide form! Thank you! Now, will the cutting you took still revert to juvenile form for the new leaves?

    • @petevsplants7516
      @petevsplants7516  Рік тому +2

      Hehe yeah the ruffles (or 'geniculum') are pretty cool. Apparently they're used by the plant to allow it to pivot the leaf and have it facing the sun more easily. I might get slightly stunted leaf growth, but because the root ball was so developed, it might hit the ground running and push out another huge leaf. I'll have to ask the woman I sold it to to let me know how it goes.
