Hey really enjoying your channel. It's so much fun on the odd occasion when you share sneaky peaks into your family life: love the way you interact together. I've had the odd root rot episode over the years and my go-to is dependent on the severity. Mild case, abstain fro. Watering until the soil dries out ALMOST completely, then spray water occasionally until new growth appears. Medium to bad = take out of pot and allow to dry out until the root ball is cold but not wet. Trim off all visibly rotted roots with clean, sharp implement. Repot in a more chunkier mixed substrate. Dampen new substrate with a few sprays, and water/spray so new substrate is damp when it needs watering until new growth. Works for me!

I’m waiving every possible video about what to look out for…how they are prone to root rot…what to do with them when they arrive, etc. your videos are always crazy helpful. I’m soooo glad it was in the list. It’s cold here in the northeast US so I’m a little nervous about cold damage. But I did buy heat packs and shipping insurance. Fingers crossed. Awesome video. 😊
I had good luck with my Thai Constellation. I rooted it in damp sphagnum moss until it had 6-8 inch(15-20cm) roots then planted it in a resevoir planter with Lechuza Pon. Its growing great! I feel so fortunate that I had no issues with rot or pests
I’d love to get my hands on some tissue culture plants, I love that they are available for house plants varieties. I have used them before for aquarium plants with great success.
I lost my first Thai Constellation to root rot. Total devo because she was stunning and I had never spent so much on a plant before. I was told you can save them by cutting off all the rot, rinsing in 3% hydrogen peroxide to stop the rot then re-rooting in water or spag but mine just kept rotting until there was nothing left. I hope yours comes back!
I've since heard many people have the same issue with Thai Constellation, but only a 'recent' batch? Apparently the first ones released were hardier? Anyway I don't trust myself at all to judge when to water my new Thai. I bought a bunnings water/light/ph probey dohicky and only water when she's nearly dry. 11 months in she's doing well so fingers crossed.

Yeah... I'm not really sure. I've only had a few of these guys out of tissue culture, maybe two batches? And so far all but that one seem fine, and it may have been my fault for letting the soil dry out too much before watering again.
I was lucky catching the rot on the two Thia babies I bought this year. As soon as the lowest leaf started to yellow, I pulled them from the pots, and removed all the mush, soaked it in peroxide solution. They've been in water since and we have nice new roots going within a few weeks
Loving your videos, I just thought I would mention that by dipping the end of the cutting/plant into the propagation gel can lead to accidental cross contamination of diseases. Best to get a q-tip and dab it on that way. Just to be safe.
Beautiful plants. I wish u luck with the rot. I found a painted lady yesterday at a local shop we have here called The Spud Shed. Im pretty sure it is only a South West Aussie shop, and it was only $3.50 !!! They had 4 there, but i only got 1, thinking i would be a good person and leave some for others to enjoy. I showed my husband and his reaction was, "Why didnt u buy them all, grow them out and resell the others?" Needless to say i will be going back there today to buy the rest if they are still there 😁

I've learned over the years that cuttings and babies and rehabs do best in pure perlite, pure pumice or a mix of two. Adding fine grain substrates such as soil should be very minimal or else the roots will rot. Speaking from painful experience.
Thanks Deven. Yeah, it was a bit of a weird one as, from memory, these plants arrived already in soil I believe. So, not sure why 2 have thrived and the other hasn't. Guess it might just be luck of the draw and for whatever chance reason its roots had a hard time of it.
After 2+ years taking care and propagating thai constellation....i also just experienced my first root rot on one of my propagation. Kinda similar size to yours but with 3 leaves, all the roots were gone and the bottom part of the stem also a lil bit rotted off.. so I cut off the rotted part then treat it with diluted physan20, then just chucked it in leca and water. A month later... it already have pretty substantial root system. But I'm too lazy to move it back to soil lol
Your dedication is commendable. I don't think I'll ever own a thai constellation but I sure do like to see videos of them. I collect succulents more than anything cause I live in a desert so they grow better here. Do you have any succulents/cactus? Adios! from El Paso, TX
My painted lady is half the size of yours and not doing anything. I really just hope it is being slow. I have yet to dive into the constellation because of the rot issues everyone seems to have but it is definitely on my future list.
Hmmm... I'd probably check the roots and make sure they're all good as well as double check she's getting watered often enough. Often if I don't keep my plants' soil moist enough and frequently enough they slow right down.
I got mine from Thailand, a relatively big(ish) plant, her roots rotten completely, kept her in a pon/perlite mix till it started pushing roots, and it is living in pon now, in a self watering container, with impressive roots and no problems at all.
@@petevsplants7516 In my experience, perlite holds more water compared to pon or leca, so when I propagate stuff, I feel more comfortable with adding pon to it. I rehabbed some rootless philodendrons in pure perlite, however, and it worked perfectly, no issue. I don't have any plants living in it though, but I am sure they could (but then again, I do have most of them in pon :) )
How these doing? I bought cultures in November about 65 and I lost one. But they are not all that large yet. Curious to see how big yours are now mine just came out of an extremely warm humid grow tent
I JUST got a massively varigated Creme Brulee quite a bit larger than those for $120! I am obsessed. I am considering putting it on a pole very soon to see how quickly I can get it to size up? Do you think that would do the trick?

Yeah, it's all about scarcity I guess and the fact that it's very difficult to import here so the average plant crazy Aussie can't just get them in from Ecuagenera :( We get so jealous seeing everyone in the US and UK, etc. importing amazing stuff so cheap. Let me know how you go if you get yours! :D
Painted lady is on my wishlist. They’ve been showing up here in the US at a store called Dollar Store but there isn’t one in my town. I think they were going for $6.99, medium size plant maybe 6” pot.

Haha yeah, I've never had any issues doing it that way tbh, BUT... perhaps I'd have a higher rate of success if I didn't do it that way. I'll have to try it next time. They're some cheap LED lights from eBay, however, I checked this week and they're out of stock. So, I'd recommend just grabbing an affordable set off eBay or Amazon (look for good ratings/reviews) and then test how it goes for a month or so before lashing out on a few other sets.

When we need to rehab roots - or just collected an amazing 150 year old juniper in the mountains to regrow roots we put them in air baskets in 100%pumice. It’s amazing and supplies consistent humidity for root growth and the perfect oxygen water balance. For root rot issues we do a hydrogen peroxide drench then pot up in pumice. Generally it’s 100% successful

Hehe haven't done it yet, as I'm waiting for it to push out its second leaf. So yeah, spoiler, it did :D It was funny actually. The top leaf kept getting taller inside the jar of moss and eventually hit the glad wrap at the top and I was thinking "How is this possible? It shouldn't still be growing?". It turned out that there was a huge root developing below and it was pushing it upward, whilst the second little leaf had broken off and was dying. So yeah, it's doing well :D
@@petevsplants7516 well, I dont think so. Like I just got a “well rooted” 5 leaf cutting (but if its well rooted is it really a cutting any longer..??) of a deliciousa and half those were rotten when I got it. (The roots I mean). I think I just have bad luck with them.
Ah that sucks, Denise. Sorry to hear it. Keep persisting. I've got dozens of Monsteras now and don't have many issues with them for the most part. They seem pretty tolerant.
@@petevsplants7516 i am persistent. I cut away all the rot that I could see and planted it in a nice airy mix. I put it under a grow light and Im hoping she survives. Loving the content by the way!
People fear what they don't understand like with GMO and gene therapies, etc. There are some issues with it, i.e. when it's done badly or when poor quality parent plants are used. Though, I think what most people worry about is poorly acclimated TC plants, that is, they have been taken out of their perfect TC environment too quickly and haven't gotten used to lower humidity, more light, etc., and the plants suffer or die as a result, often just after some poor person's purchased them. That's my 2c anyway.
@@petevsplants7516 Ahhhh, thank you…makes sense! I don’t think this would dissuade me from buying a TC’d plant. I feel like the same due diligence should be done as with any plant purchase, thus increasing one’s likelihood of receiving a healthy, pretty plant. 😀🪴
Yeah, I think if it's a relatively well-established plant that isn't a tiny seedling, you're almost certain to be fine. If it's a seedling, it's a little more risky if you have no idea what the conditions were before getting it, but most of the time in my experience it's been fine. And if it's you taking things out of TC, as long as you take your time and don't rush, it should be fine too.
@@petevsplants7516 I've seen some people using an air pump + air stone to oxygenate their water propagations - claiming faster/better root growth, maybe that's an idea/experiment for further testing (probably with cheaper plants, until proven successful?)
Yeah, I think it's because you guys have the Netherlands and their greenhouses pushing out loads and you're also more freely able to import plants from outside your countries, in particular, Thailand. We can't do that here in Aus the same way unless it's TC plants in sterile vials..
You're better off without the water at the bottom, i propagate a lot of terrarium plants and doing it this way has always caused rot issues. Over time the water gets deprived of oxygen and anaerobic rotting will occur, if its out in the open air it will work better because the water can evaporate in time.
Interesting. I'll have to see how it goes. Usually my water evaporates out or soaks up into the solution with a few days, so hopefully that will avoid root rot.

@@petevsplants7516 i am persistent. I cut away all the rot that I could see and planted it in a nice airy mix. I put it under a grow light and Im hoping she survives. Loving the content by the way!

I’ve seen/read here and there that many people take issue with tissue-cultured plants, and I not quite sure I understand why. Anyone know?
People fear what they don't understand like with GMO and gene therapies, etc. There are some issues with it, i.e. when it's done badly or when poor quality parent plants are used. Though, I think what most people worry about is poorly acclimated TC plants, that is, they have been taken out of their perfect TC environment too quickly and haven't gotten used to lower humidity, more light, etc., and the plants suffer or die as a result, often just after some poor person's purchased them. That's my 2c anyway.
@@petevsplants7516 Ahhhh, thank you…makes sense! I don’t think this would dissuade me from buying a TC’d plant. I feel like the same due diligence should be done as with any plant purchase, thus increasing one’s likelihood of receiving a healthy, pretty plant. 😀🪴
Yeah, I think if it's a relatively well-established plant that isn't a tiny seedling, you're almost certain to be fine. If it's a seedling, it's a little more risky if you have no idea what the conditions were before getting it, but most of the time in my experience it's been fine. And if it's you taking things out of TC, as long as you take your time and don't rush, it should be fine too.

@@petevsplants7516 I've seen some people using an air pump + air stone to oxygenate their water propagations - claiming faster/better root growth, maybe that's an idea/experiment for further testing (probably with cheaper plants, until proven successful?)

Omg Thai is so expensive in Australia! Here europe you can get a mature Thai with fenestrated leaves for 180€.
Yeah, I think it's because you guys have the Netherlands and their greenhouses pushing out loads and you're also more freely able to import plants from outside your countries, in particular, Thailand. We can't do that here in Aus the same way unless it's TC plants in sterile vials..

Damn that much for a Choco red in Australia, not to brag I got mine for $60 US.
Yeah, we can't import easily without permits and fumigation/3 month quarantine. It's pretty hard to get new things as quickly as the US and UK do.
You're better off without the water at the bottom, i propagate a lot of terrarium plants and doing it this way has always caused rot issues. Over time the water gets deprived of oxygen and anaerobic rotting will occur, if its out in the open air it will work better because the water can evaporate in time.
Interesting. I'll have to see how it goes. Usually my water evaporates out or soaks up into the solution with a few days, so hopefully that will avoid root rot.
