Great to be able to see I have a bunch of vids to catch up on! Been on a 10 day cruise and streaming video was a no go. I understand folks who are proping to build a business. You need product. Personally, it distresses me that many (especially on YT) chop a beautiful example of a plant to “propagate it” because, well, it’s cool? I guess in a free market, make it if you can. I really don’t understand prices some sellers throw out there, but the saying “a fool and his money are soon parted” applies. Only question, is the buyer or the seller the fool. 😂
Haha yeah, it's a bit like that out there. And I totally know what you mean re: chopping plants up. Ideally, I wouldn't chop anything, though, I want to be able to earn an income to sustain things. Hoping to get large examples of all my favourite plants at some point though for sure.
I got all of my "rare" plants from people who chopped theirs off ebay, without them chopping and propping I would be pretty sad over here haha, affordable and local is much better fir me than to import a plant and spend heaos of money fir a plant only to soend the next months acclamaiting it , not only that, but it also keeps waste down, a lot of cuttings I've gotten I only got because people's plants are overgrowing them and they have no other choice but to chop, I'm suoer greatful to them, I've bought sad plant boxes of uglier looking plants at an insanely low price and all I have to do is wait for it to grow out the "ugly" Personally I hate propagating, it takes forever and I get impatient with root growth haha not to mention that it rots most of the time...
My 2c, you're spot on Pete. But thankfully the majority are reasonable and there is also the opposite end of the spectrum where people share without expectation. ☺ Love the prop box pot up, isn't it fascinating that cuttings of the same plant in the same conditions can do so very differently?
Perlite prop box is great, no second guessing with moisture. Spag moss is rather hit and miss for me unless air layering. Talking about flipping rare plants, its crazy how people tryna recoup their expensive purchase price by reselling the plant that is now fully var or fully reverted. not to mention payment plan to smoothen the deal? Hahaha
Yeah, there's a lot of that shit that happens. My favourite is people buying a plant for say $4000 then chopping the top off it and selling the base 2 tiny leaves for $4000. lol
Hey Pete at 11:30 you have to immediately cut that Melanochrysum rot off with a sterilized knive otherwise it will rot even further . Cut only until everything in the inner stem looks green . Thanks for the fantastic prop Box vid. Much love from the Black Forest/ Germany 🐣

Your rant totally reminded me of "The Muffin Tops" Seinfeld episode, lol.. Rebecca: Excuse me, I'm Rebecca Demore from the homeless shelter. Elaine: Oh, hi. Rebecca: Are you the ones leaveing the muffing pieces behind our shelter? Elaine: You been enjoying them? Rebecca: They're just stumps. Elaine: Well they're perfectly edible. Rebecca: Oh, so you just assume that the homeless will eat them, they'll eat anything? Mr. Lippman: No no, we just thought... Rebecca: I know what you thought. They don't have homes, they don't have jobs, what do they need the top of a muffin for? They're lucky to get the stumps. Elaine: If the homeless don't like them the homeless don't have to eat them. Rebecca: The homeless don't like them. Elaine: Fine. Rebecca: We've never gotten so many complaints. Every two minutes, "Where is the top of this muffin? Who ate the rest of this?" Elaine: We were just trying to help. Rebecca: Why don't you just drop off some chicken skins and lobster shells. Elaine: I think I might.
You're description of unlashing the predatory mites into your garden mental imagery akin to the animated "Larva". 😂 If you've not seen it, you should check it out. The kids will love it too. I encountered it on Foxtel when I helped tend my nibblings a lot. It's hilarious! Even when you're straight and sober. lol Don't feel bad about the lil bastards being slaughtered. They were not invited in! 😂
Lol the amount of times I see people selling a half moon albo monstera 1 leaf cuttings whilst the white halves were cut off cause those parts went brown. And guess what, the prices are still insane!!!
Haha yeah. I've done that a few times (buying them) when the prices are dropped because no one else wants them as that's when you can get a good deal re: genetics lol despite the plant being ugly.
@@petevsplants7516 thanks! Got it from my husband's family every time and the previous two times ruined holidays, at least this time I've been able to be sick from work 😂
I couldn't agree more about what you were saying in the beginning of the video. I'm not a seller but I've seen examples of what you're talking about. I think it's funny when sellers will sell an albo monstera with the slightest fleck of variegation and have the nerve to tell potential buyers, "know what you're buying before purchasing, I am not responsible for any loss" or whatever along those lines. Like yeah, you're essentially selling a regular monstera at albo prices Karen, I think people will manage lol. And they'll be selling it for some insane price. For. A. FLECK. Of. Variegation! 🤦🏼♀️😂
Yeah, the online plant sales world is such a bizarre place with a lot of bad actors that seem to just be wanting to offload low quality plants. I've heard of people buying cuttings that had spent nodes... no potential to grow out into bigger plants. Dodgy as... LOl but yeah the "HIGH VARIEGATION" on ads with plants that are very much not highly variegated is embarrassing.
🐸🧦 Awesome video Pete! Thankfully I haven't had the pleasure of dealing with private sellers and their premium rootstocks But I agree, it sounds shady to say the least. How much light are your prop boxes getting - I'm curious to know if they're near a window as well as under a light, or just a random corner getting ambient light? (how close/and for how long?) Clearly I've not been paying close attention. 😆😆 I think the term you're looking for is the leaf 'axil' - where the petiole meets the main stem/central axis.🌿
Tbh I understand what you mean, but what people do with their money is their business, as long as the person selling the plant is transparent about the plant and bot scamming I honestly see no issue
That pickle rick description of predatory mites is hilarious 😹
Omg i love all of the pop culture references in this video.

Man those monstera albo auctions on eBay last week were crazy
Were these Bonza Botanicals'?
They were, prices were so high lol though the plants did look very well raised.
Interesting. He sells a bunch every week, so I'm surprised they're still high prices. I've been watching for months.
