- G'day, you mob! Today, a special package has arrived! I've received 5 x Monstera deliciosa 'mint' explants out of tissue culture. Today I go through the process of how to remove plants from tissue culture, sterilising them with hydrogen peroxide and liquid copper, and then potting them up in sphagnum moss and large perlite. If you're every thinking about importing aroids or other indoor plants in tissue culture and growing them up at home, this video's for you!

I believe Oxidation is the word for the chemical reaction but that's the extent of my knowledge lol. I'm super impressed with how thorough you are with your new plants, can't wait to see some updates on these guys!
Cheers, Sarah! It's been a couple of weeks now and they're all still with us, though 2 have been sold :D Had a leaf melt off two of them though during the move to moss, might be natural, but freaked me out initially.
@@petevsplants7516 Yeah, it‘s HydrogenperOXIDE and Copper - think about what happens to statues made of copper over time - they turn green because of the oxidation. :)
Yep... Makes more sense now lol derp me!
This was so interesting thank you for showing us all. I’m so intrigued about tissue culture plants, i feel like I would be too clumsy and not confident enough to work with them 😅 I look forward to seeing the updates!
Ps. You have quickly become my favourite plant UA-camr, as a fellow Aussie plant nerd you are very relatable 🪴
Naw, thanks so much for the kind words and support, Amy! I really appreciate it. Definitely think that TC is made out to be way more difficult than in reality, so definitely give it a go if you get the chance. Just follow the steps and I'm sure you'll crush it.
Sweet!!! Another video! I package plants to ship for my shop during the day so I love having videos to watch while I work!!! Thanks for all the content! I'm lovin it!
Yay! Glad to hear it mate :D Packing anything interesting at the moment?
@@petevsplants7516 I was packaging lots of Hoya, 2 Albo Monsteras, & a few Variegated Alocasia Odora babes! They are on their way now , through the cold & snow so now I hold my breath til they get there! 🫣🙏🏻
Hehe god speed!
Wow I’ve tried many aquarium tissue culture plants and they was so easy. Now seeing your video I’m ready for the Albo and Aurea monstera tissue culture. I cannot wait to see the update in a few months.
Hehe cheers, mate! Will make one soon :D
super interesting. can't wait for updates!
Cheers, mate! Stay tuned :D
Hey Pete the Plant.😉👌You did well to repeat the cleaning processes.
It is better to be safe than sorry if you do not know the sellers environmental conditions and handling habits .
Always happy to see such a Greenhorn being so happy and joyful with his green family .
Good vibes there .
All the best for your plant babies ( and to be equally fair for your human babies and entire family too ).
Love from Germany
Thanks so much, Matthias! :D Let me know if you have any added tips for me :D
@@petevsplants7516 yes indeed Peed i have ( atm) one interesting tip regarding propagation Boxes.
At night as you know plants go from photosynthesizing to breathing in oxygen cause their roots take a break . So it is wise to open the boxes for a good 1 min right when the sun Sets where you are .
That is usually when ur plants there want to start breathinh in oxygen.
I always thought if you have growlights they Start the night cycle when YOUR lights turn off but no .
Observe your Prayer Plants they usually Start to go dormant somewhere between 1 to 1/2 hour before sunset .
If they have any contact to daylight they will do that .
If no outdoor light at all touches them and they solely depend on growlights they will adjust to the growlight cycle bc that is the only thing they know . EDIT: THE INTENSITY OF THE GROWLIGHTS HAVE TO BE STRONG ENOUGH THOUGH ( 4 TO 5K LUX >) FOR THAT EFFECT TO SET IN THOUGH . THAT IS THESE NUMBRS MEASSURED ON THE TOP LEAF SURFACE .
So take that into considering providing all your plants with oxygen at night bc that time is THE time they require more oxygen than in the daytime .
Maybe that helped a bit .
Have a great day
Matt
Great stuff, thanks, Matt!
This was a cool project. I think I now have more confidence to buy some of those TC baggies.
Cheers, mate! Definitely grab some. Philodendron TC is a great affordable place to start.
Thank you for another great video I learned so much from you
My pleasure, Ashley! Glad you enjoyed it :D See you in tomorrow's video!

Looking forward to seeing updates on this!
I've only ever had experience with aquatic plants in TC. Usually it's far more simple (just plant in the aquarium, and wait), but some have definitely been a failure to thrive. I'd feel apprehensive about those roots too...
🤞🤞Hope it grows well for you!
Oh nice! Which plants were they and how'd they go? And yeah, lol I imagine managing their humidity (100% as it's under water) would be a little easier haha
@@petevsplants7516 My most recent TC plant additions are Rotala wallichii and Rotala macrandra.
These two have been more challenging/finicky than most of my other aquatic plants as they would appreciate CO2 injection (which I'd rather not deal with yet) and higher light.
They're still alive and growing but don't really have the colors they are known for...
The aquarium they are in has a very thick carpet of Java moss which hogs a lot of nutrients and blocks a lot of light.
But it's been a fun learning experiment!
TC plants have always made me nervous, but you've given me a bit of courage to try it out!😅
You got this, mate! Let me know if you have any questions :D
What is the mixture of hydrogen peroxide and liquid copper fungicide? What products you use?
Any chance there was ever an update on these guys??
As others have stated it is an oxidizing reaction between the liquid copper (actually a soap containing one copper molecule also know as copper octanoate) and the peroxide. I could not find the reaction equasion but I would suspect the rather violent reaction will rob the copper octanoate of its anti fungal properties. Peroxide (H2O2) might also be used to bleach bones (in my case bird skulls) to a clean white color.
Hey Panzer, that's for that. And yeah, I suspected as much re: losing the copper's anti-fungal properties, so definitely think it was wise to restart haha
Good tutorial. Definitely helpful for my next TC purchase.
Hehe what's on the list?
@@petevsplants7516 Maybe some Thai packs or a Variegated mint monstera. Variegated Thai look exceptional as well.
Hehe do it :P
Where did u buy them? any web site?
you are freaking brilliant. i learn so much from you. im doing some new experiments myself. plants and prop is my favorite game. is sheet moss an ok substitute for sphagnum moss? i would break it up well & add pearlite (sp). i need to know please. im old & i dont have access to some of these things. HA! true tho.
Hey mate, thanks a lot. I'm not sure re: sheet moss as I've never used it myself. Ultimately, what'll matter is the way it holds moisture and air. If it's a good combo of the two not too wet, not too dry, that's ideal for your props.
@@petevsplants7516 Thanks
What that’s so expensive in Singapore you can get a decent sized leaf cutting that’s rooted for 200SGD
Hi Pete am in Canada and looking to get me some thai mint, who do I reach out too get me a couple of them .thanks
Where did you buy them ??
This video was in my side recommendations on your most recent video. I've not gotten around to binging your content yet. lol
Ngl, I'm disappointed they weren't in flasks. I was hoping for a deflasking type video. I've only started to learn about TC and not seen a demo of deflasking yet. This was still very informative. Thanks.
I asked the googles about the reaction. It seems the h202 causes the copper to drop out of solution. Unless I am understanding what I read wrong. It's been known to happen. 😅
Yeah, sorry haha was expecting them to be in flasks, but alas. Next time I get a flask of TC I'll be sure to do a video on extracting the explants. And yeah, I think it's oxidation that's happening.
Great video! Been nervous to buy TC from places and definitely will give it a shot! However maybe start off with an easier type
Yeah, smart idea. Definitely worth giving a go. Start with something like TC philodendrons and see how you go.
@@petevsplants7516 will defintely do that! Would be great to get a video about stores you trust with TC from Melbourne/ Vic! As a melburnian would love to find some good new shops/ facebook pages
Where do you get your TC plants?
agreed, the peroxide will change the oxidation state of the copper in solution
Boooom... thank you!!!!
Yea! That’s exactly what I was gonna say to do lol. With the hydro peroxide. Hope everything works out.
Cheers, mate. Had root rot on all of them. But new roots are growing back strong fortunately and none have died.
Oh never mind it's a long time ago
You have a good angel with u a family member😊💚💚 or someone that was very close to you that pass
:) Considering I went to a funeral yesterday, that's a comforting though. Thanks Jen.
Hi just found your channel, quick question which light are you using?🤠✌️
Hey mate, they're 20w LEDs off ebay (Australia). Here's the link - www.ebay.com.au/itm/325143108745
💚
:D
Can u please tell me were u got that tissue culture monstera
Hey mate, send me a pm on instagram and I'll give you the link. Seeing as I've bad mouthed them a bit in this video I'm reluctant to post their name haha
where did you buy it? I’ve been looking for one.
I wouldn't recommend the place I got them from. Uprooted has them for sale currently and I trust them.
Can we get an update pleeeease??🙏🌱❤️✨
Will try to do one soon. All 3 that I've kept are still alive and slowly sizing up.
Keep up the good work mate. Give us some update in few weeks!
Cheers, Tommy! Will do :) It's been about 2 weeks now and they're all still alive (2 sold though). I'll probably do an update once they start pushing out new growth :D
@@petevsplants7516 Awesome! Can't wait to see how they look mature
Stay tuned :D
Any updates on your tissue culture plants?
Hey Drea, still alive :) Will do an update soon!
@@petevsplants7516 I can’t wait to see them.
Would love to watch an update soon too.
Those brown roots were a bit.... terrifying. Hope they do well for you!
Yeah... think it was all good though. I've seen some plants in TC with them that colour and they still do fine. It's not necessarily rot interestinly.
It was better without the light on and I would request your money back or new plants sent out
Yer I wasn’t overly impressed by the price increase, I probably won’t buy from them again. Just cause it wasn’t that good of an excuse they were obviously making good money on their original pricing. I was thankful to get mine for the original price..
100% this. As someone who runs a small business (English courses), I would never up the price mid sale... If you notice a sale goes particularly well, sure... consider upping them next time, but in the middle of a sale? Ridiculous... And not only that but to use such a piss poor excuse too. Far out!
@@petevsplants7516 exactly, I run a nursery here in Queensland and I couldn’t imagine doing it. You have to base pricing on your costs and what the market is doing. Better to start higher and if you need to do 20% off or something later then do that… much fairer and ethical way of running a business
May I know who is the seller by any chance or the page? Keen to see whats on offer :)
Hey mate, pm me on instagram.
Yeah you nailed it Aussie Horticulturalist.
My mint monstera cost 2 bucks here in Mexico, not TC, just natural mutation
Haha right from the source, huh? Jealous :D
@@petevsplants7516 I can show you in my IG if you want to see it 😁😁😁.
Yeah, send me a msg mate :D Would love to see it
