Yasuke's known history: he arrived in japan as a slave from india owned by italian jesuit missionaries stays there for 2 years and then encounters Oda Nobunaga, when Oda saw him he took him as a curiosity, gave him a short sword and a house, and duties of taking care of his gear(meaning he was essentially a squire, nifty). After 15 months, Oda Nobunaga dies(betrayed by the vassal Akechi) and Yasuke surrenders his sword to an Akechi man and is then sent back to the missionaries from India, where he completely disappears from historical record. This is not an important historical character, but a footnote, a historical oddity at best and a very short one. Japanese history is full of much more interesting and colorful characters, ones with actual bearing on the stories they're involved in. That being said - I'd rather have a good Crusader game.

Two big red flags with making Yasuke a main character.
    1. We have never had a historical figure or "anyone from history" as a main character in any Assassins Creed games. They are always the side characters you interact with. The main characters are original characters to their stories.
    2. The main characters have always been from their setting, region, and culture. They are from the area. And if there are two main characters they BOTH are, not just one.
They broke both traditions in one game and quite frankly it is a middle finger to Japan. If you wanted a historical figure why not pick someone actually Japanese........like Oda? Sanada? Hanzo? Etc? And why in the world have one of the main characters not be from the region when we finally hit Japan? The game we have wanted for years.

While we're at it, if they REALLY wanted someone "historical," but allowed for leeway, there are actually a good few ninja who were fictional but treated as legendary figures nonetheless - Fuuma Kotaro, Sarutobi Sasuke, or Ishikawa Goemon for example.

Whether he was or wasn't this or that is a red herring, the bigger issue is this is the first ac MC to ever be a historical figure. Before they've all been fictionalized cultural composits to separate the fictional (all of history being driven by a war between two shadow organizations fighting over magic apples to control the world) from the historical backdrop (historical figures and events) in their historical fiction. Of course that's going to upset anyone that enjoys the historical aspect that you are now muddying the waters by making the fictitious assassin who drives the ahistorical aspects of the the series a historical figure. Why do that other than to justify black samurai in isolationist Japan? And to see wikipedia and even historica Britanica vigorously editing their articles on the subject to better reflect Unisofts identitarian fiction is disheartening, and obliterates any argument to me that this is anything other than modern identitarian nonsense. Stop Americanizing history.

Correct. You're not supposed to actually play as historic figures from the past in these games, you may interact with them, but by design your character is not in the history books. This also avoided Ubisoft having to paint a real figure life as some mass-murdering machine.

      And William, the English Samurai.

@Awaifn seriously, this comment I been telling people, but nah, too many dumb idiots just yell "incel! Racists!" At me just because I criticize ubisoft's stupidity at having yasuke as main protagonist.
I swear I have no hopes in today's society. They can't even bother to take criticism or opinions without yelling these things. It especially doesn't help when there's those people who just say "no big deal, it's a fuking video game."
When that's not even an argument. That's just plain delusion. Ac games has always had an touch of everything
Historical aspects that makes it feel like we are in history, fiction plots and aspects that made sure it wasn't entirely historical hence the disclaimer for inspired by historical events.
But still can be considered involved with historical assets and aspects cuz it's got locations, figures, time period, architecture.

From what I’ve heard and understand Yasuke didn’t qualify as an actual samurai in the traditional sense if at all, he was closer to a servant/pet than a samurai. In order for him to have been an official samurai he would’ve had to have been a noble or a commoner of some significance, which apparently he was neither of according to most sources.
Imo having Yasuke of all people not only be an official samurai as shown in the trailers but also one of the 2 main characters is not only virtue signaling but also pretty much borders, if it wasn’t already, on racism given that samurais are an important part of historical Japanese culture and the devs seemed to have given it to the one foreigner over other Japanese figures or another original character if they wanted, it just feels like they went out of their way to chose Yasuke as a protagonist due to the color of his skin and cause of his vague mark on history with the other protagonist being in a similar situation being that of her gender. Still it’s not like my input matters anyway in the grand scheme of things 🤷‍♂️

Sad thing is, it's still a interesting character. If he actually existed. That's debatable. "There's artwork with him" is not proof.
Just like black knights in Europe. If they existed they would have very been rare, probably not living in England or Wales.

It should also be noted that every AC title before Shadows had non-historical characters as protagonists. They were all made up so that no actual historical person was given ridiculous assassin roles that they never actually did. Can you imagine playing as George Washington in AC3 running along rooftops and dispatching British soldiers with hidden blades and doing parkour stunts? It wouldn’t have made any sense. It was imperative that the protagonists were part of the history and yet completely fictional to prevent the player from having to suspend too much disbelief.

Black flag was 150 AUD, unity 170, syndicate, 190, origins 220 (these were all the exclusive editions with bigger statues etc) then Odyssey 250 (the spartan edition) and Valhalla at 310 (the regular collectors with female Statue) and now the new one is 360... That's some crazy inflation.

But White Samurai was an actual thing, William Adams, an English explorer was given the title of Samurai by that famous Lord Dokugawa for teaching him about the outside world and knowledge since Japan was very enclosed country during that Senkogu Era. Dokugawa greatly respected the man for his teaching and his council, so much so that he refused William's request to go back to England and tried to make him settle in Japan. Meanwhile, Yasuke was a slave that belonged to Italian missionary Alessandro Valignano and just happened to caught Lord Nobunaga's attention because of his appearance and was given as a gift. He wasn't treated as Samurai or given the title. More like close friend and a retainer to Nobunaga. The story of Yasuke being captured by Mistuhide after Nobunaga's death (The general that betrayed and assassinated Nobunaga) and not being executed because Mistuhide said Blacks aren't humans but animals and not worthy of noble death is well known in Asia. Just showing how he was really treated during that time and why Yasuke was so loyal to Nobunaga, since he treated him very differently.

My greatest problem is simple- HOW on Earth is a massive (compared to Japanise people of time) black man is supposed to be an Assassin in Sengoku Jidai Japan?! Last time I checked, assassins are supposed to be stealthy-blend with the crowd, kill so that nobody knows who is a murder, erase alert. Now, can anybody see Yasuke blending with the crowd? Seating unnoticed on bench? And how can ripping posters help, if all bad guys need to do is to warn all their minions to "sound alarm if you see massive Kuro Oni"? Not to mention that everybody would know who is the killer. Yasuke is likely THE ONLY black man in, for example, Kyoto or Owari or whenever they set the game! All would know that he works for Nobunaga?
That's why I like Yasuke in Nioh and Samurai Warriors. He is a warrior there and fights openly on the side of Nobunaga. But an assassin? Can you imagine spanish man as an assassin in Empire of Mali?

It's not like he can blend in to the crowd after a mass murder spree. The trouble with choosing a historical character is that they'll now be inserting their own "history" as to his participation in events we know he wasn't recorded to be in. He spent, at most, 3 years in Japan, and was only in service to Oda Nobunaga for a little over a year. I'm not aware of Ubisoft making changes to exact historical events or details we knew of the real-life characters in previous instalments, but they were adding layers to them by suggesting they were all part of a secret war, their contributions not held in records so they could take some liberties.
We have enough records, as written by people that were alive at that time, of how long Yasuke lived in Japan and what his role was in service to Lord Oda. Ubisoft, Wikipedia and Historica Britannica keep marketing him as a legendary warrior, but at the same time Ubisoft's reasoning for using him was that he is an enigma they know little of, and they could embellish and use him however they wish because of his lack of impact in Japanese history. It has created a large swathe of people arrogantly declaring him a true samurai, fighting in battles that he wasn't recorded in, and how other black people became samurai eventually too. None of these people can provide sources and instead resort to the R word, because having constructive criticism of false claims from people that learned history on the back of a cereal box is tantamount to committing a grave sin. I've even had someone argue with me that he was in manga, games and anime as a samurai, and apparently that's proof 🤦‍♂.
Their reasoning doesn't stand since if they used a fictional character then they would have even more freedom to do what they liked, and Yasuke could have been an NPC that was part of the Brotherhood somewhere in Africa before Jesuits (Templars) captured him and brought him to Japan to force him into helping locate a precursor relic. This could prompt a Dawn of Ragnarok style spin-off/expansion, with some liberties taken around areas not already on record. Filling in the blanks.
We know why they chose to use him, to create controversy. They manufactured this backlash because they knew it would appeal to those that love to just call people out and would buy the game because "muh black samurai", and now it's created a false representation of true history because there are those saying that AC has never been about true historical accuracy and at the same time pretending a historical character was more important than what he really was. Typical corporate BS, and what should enrage everyone, regardless of what side they are on, are the pricing and editions. Paying £/$/100+ for two of the three editions is ridiculous, and for all you get out of it too. Content (quests, armour, weapons etc.) should never be separated from the main game (outside of a later expansion) and then sold separately. That's just pure greed.

That fact is, he wasn't important to Japanese history, being more of an oddity than anyone impactful, and there is barely anything written about him and by all accounts, he only lived in Japan for a year or so - not a lot of time for samurai training when Japanese boys spent 8 years training. From an objective point of view, it doesn't make sense to make him the MC. It only makes sense as a decision to pander to DEI.
