Allen Abesamis So don't be! :) As he said, just be yourself. I know a few UA-camrs that their channel is not about being funny at all. There is room for all sort of moods dude haha!

Sorry, Harshil, as a professional writer, one is always forcing creativity. It's a romantic fallacy that one has to be in the mood to be creative. Frankly, some of my best work has come from working my way through the blockage. That being written, it's also true that inspiration can come from many ways and no one way is correct, but frankly, I'm most satisfied when I find the discipline to slog my way back into a creative space.

"They're just curious about what your filming" This is the biggest take away for me from the video. So many times I've thought "are they judging me? Am I being weird or creepy?" when in reality, it's nothing like that. I've noticed people look at me the same way when filming B-roll and never gave it a second thought, why bother giving a second thought to people looking when I'm filming myself?

    • @thiagopalia
      @thiagopalia 6 років тому +3

That's so true man. As a filmmaker you never give a damn when people stare at you while capturing your stuff outside. At least to me, it even empowers me haha I feel I'm doing something interesting enough to make people interested. Should feel the exact same way when vlogging.

Best tip: people want to know what you’re feeling while you are where you are or doing what you’re doing. Also good to know everyone started out shy first too.

  • @CallMeChato

Great post and I generally agree, but I would like to add a few things. First of all, the 'real you' on UA-cam is still a character. It might be similar but it is an exaggeration because video requires energy transfer through the lens to the imaging chip. Some people have that 'royal jelly' and are naturally charismatic, but most of us are not. But familiarity can breed a bit of that charisma thing. It is still a performance. Peter McKinnon has a highly exaggerated, fake naturalism. He's acting. I'm doing comedy, so that's a different kind of performance. It's also easier to vlog and be moving on a bike or a boosted board rather than walking through crowds. Casey uses his boosted board as a protective bubble while at the same time attracting more attention in a trademark way. It's quite brilliant. My recommendation is to find a character that you can get lost in that lets you cut out the noise around you. Treat is a performance that you are doing for UA-cam fans and the people around you. Wade into a crowd! Yell at your rig, have fun, let people be part of your party. People are much nicer when they think you are performing rather than thinking, "look at that asshole talking into that fuzzy thing." Granted, it's a hard thing to overcome but rewarding when you can do it.

Lots of great points in this, after almost 4 years of vlogging I would agree...know what you are going to say or talk about before you turn on the camera...nothing more awkward than watching someone hold a camera to their own face and be shy.

I sympathise with your subject matter because I feel as though I am awkward on camera but I love to make videos. What I've decided for the time-being is to keep the subject matter away from myself as I get more comfortable and then in later videos I may have more of a traditional vlog setup with more talking head portions.

When I was in college a half century ago, we thought one of our classmates was strange because she walked down the hallway dreamily reciting Shakespeare to herself. Today, with hands-free cell phones and all that other stuff, nobody thinks anything of it.

I cringe watching my earlier videos😁I would find isolated parks with NOBODY around or I’d video in my house. 50+ videos in and I really don’t care lol. At first I talked to my camera. Now I relate to my friends through my camera!

  • @Australian4x4Adventures

Great episode man. Really struck a cord with me and how I feel when out talking to the camera. I was out with my best mate filming over the weekend and I still felt a little awkward. But him being such a good mate grabbed the camera and started filming me for me. And gave me a few ideas on how I’m presenting myself on camera.
So I’d add to you’re list and say surround yourself with ppl who prop you up not bring you down.
    Great work bud. Thanks heaps

One of the best video I watched about Vlogging. 👍 No technical rambling but useful info about the feeling and the message, great!! I just subbed. 😊 For sure, enthusiasm, being communicative, sharing a message about what we love is really important.
I have a ton of feedback about my "bubbly personality", how they call it 😁 and the good vibes people get from my videos... I admit I an really proud if it. ☺️ I was not expecting being more comfortable on camera so quickly (especially at home of course, but that's a good start!!) but I guess I am so thrilled to talk to people!!! 😝
Thanks for the vid, feel free to offer more content not on the tech side but about the vlogging approach, practice and mindset! 😊

Dude really good tips! One tip i would love to add is if you have any vlogger you look up to. And know he exact style, once you're in the location you're vlogging and know what topic you're gonna talk about. Just imagine how would the vlogger you look upto would do it. Then somehow you're gonna know where to put the camera and talk and how to talk and just do that at the beginning and slowly a few changes would come to it and you'll bring your own style! Good luck

Thanks for the good information. I takes time to know how to speak to a camera in public.
For my intro's for my video's i always try to find a spot where i can make my intro, sometimes seeing people in the background to give the impression that i'm standing in the crowd.
I live in Belgium people still look at you not knowing what you are doing with that camera in your hand ...
But as you said, people take a look but don't stay standing, they have their own life to go on with ;-)

Good stuff, Zach. I've been wanting to create videos for UA-cam, but my footage just sits on my hard drive, because I'm learning editing and I don't want to use up all my good stuff for bad newbie-edits! I was thinking about doing a vlog sort of thing so it would be a little more raw, then I can practice with that before trying super cinematic b-roll and stuff. I hate my face and voice, but if videography is gonna' be my thing, I guess I have to force myself to get used to it, huh?

I think some people really do judge people who film themselves. But most probably don't like you said.
I don't usually laugh out loud... But I was when you said that guy is so stupid I'm going to add him on Facebook, then delete him on Facebook and then block him. Thinking about that when I see somebody looking at me might actually make me laugh about it. Reminding me how dumb somebody would be to be judging me
