I like to pretend I'm shooting UA-cam videos while I'm driving, I go over some of the topics I want to cover. It works well, but it does hurt my Uber rating
To be honest you sound like a professional UA-camr which means you improved massively. I think UA-cam has it's own sound compared to old media formats.
Very interesting. What I would recommend is listening to good podcasts. It allows you to hear how people who talk form ideas and talk at the same time.
Can’t stand my own voice on video. I sound so different makes me self conscious. When I listen to myself I have to ask if it’s me speaking. What I here with my ears as I talk is not the same voice I hear when I hear a playback. It weird.
PresidentUSVI It’s because when you speak you’re hearing a combination of your head voice and a little of what’s coming out of your mouth. Your voice resonating in your head sounds different than what people actually hear. Singers deal with this when we record. It took me a long time to get used to what I actually sound like.
Great tips for speaking on camera! I think a lot of it boils down to practise, practise, practise! The most important point I realised over the years, is to get started. It doesn't matter if it's just a baby step, but if we make sure we're taking tiny steps forward, we can be sure that we're improving!
On my blogs I got rid of the "UH"s by thinking with my mouth CLOSED. I noticed that when I was searching my mind for words, I'd say "UH" everytime. Now I just pause with my mouth closed when trying to think of my next point. I hope this helps someone. :-)
I value your lesson and -amazed that you explained exactly why I naturally don’t have Ahs Ums - eventually this led me to teaching students and executives how to stop these unnecessary repeated sounds which are not proper words - another way is to practice substituting these sounds with proper words like ‘and’ ‘’also’ and many more - hope this helps too
I found that the best way is to just practice talking in front of the camera and allow yourself complete freedom to play and experiment without holding anything back. I see too many people trying to conform to some type of ideal or copy some "confident people". I believe a better approach is to embrace your unique personality and get in touch with your natural, authentic way of expressing yourself. This will give you a solid foundation for enjoying creating all future videos and keep developing skills that will grow you as a person in all areas of life, no matter how successful you channel becomes.
*Appreciate your humility* to show that older video of yourself 🙏🏽 I released my 1st video and was embarrassed by how long it took me to get to the point! So thanks for the small confidence boost dude.
Dude, I checked your first video ''How To Write a Successful Resume In 2019'' and I think it is a great video. Why did you get embarrassed? All you need is good microphone.
Great advice Daniel. The desire for perfection is always the killer for a lot of people. (And why I haven't had the courage to publish anything!). It's a process a d great to see how much you have grown!
You are hands down my favourite UA-camr to learn basic (and advanced) principles in filmmaking and editing. To the point, practical and you cover things that everyone should know so well. Thank you SO much - keep it coming!
Check out that sunset outside at 5:19. You should've be out shooting that. Liked the tips. And kudos for showing us where you came from two years ago. Rome wasn't built in a day.
"If you're talking like this with your hands the whole time it's going to be difficult for people to focus on what you're saying", then your camera loses focus to emphasize the point. That's a well-trained camera you have there!
Aaaaand this is why this channel has grown so much, I think I have gotten so much value out of it than all other channels combined. Don't be mad at Daniel for getting huge on youtube, learn to add value to your audience. Thanks again man for all you do!
Thank You Daniel for helping us little folk out here trying to figure out Do's and Don'ts in growing our channel. Keeping it real is one of your gifts that has attracted many of us to follow you each week. Peace
This is awesome. Thanks for sharing...one thought, as a fellow Canadian myself, I think we tend to finish a lot of our sentences with an upward inflection, so it's something to work on!
Thank you for posting this. It is encouraging to see.. I’ve been beating myself up over my biggest weakness which is talking on camera. I’ve watched so many of your videos and just assumed you were a natural from day 1. Thank you for being transparent
This video helped a ton. I used to umm and uhh so much it’s hard to watch after I record it. Glad you mention ending on a down cause I didn’t realize I was always ending on ups. This really helped me improve my vlogging

This was so helpful. When I first started I hated my voice so I started making the speed of my video faster to sound “more upbeat”. Now looking back, I cringe watching those early edits!!! End of story practice makes perfect and don’t be so hard on yourself
Hey Daniel I started out like a piece of animated cardboard when first I tried speaking on camera. 2 years on and I am still struggling with remembering what I am supposed to be talking about and usually have my mouth go dry/choke on saliva or trip over my words. Result is up to 20+ takes before I get it right. What helped me was to script my words and narrate with them if off camera or use a teleprompter on camera. Literally overnight I was able to relax and speak more confidently without running out of voice. On camera if I need to break eye contact I will tell the audience what I am about to do so they understand. ex. "just give me a moment and I will put this item safely aside" or " I will just need to look at my notes" I tend to use hand gestures as well but had never heard of the power box area. Thanks for making me aware of it.
Damn really good advice here. If I may say so, yes you have come a long, long, long way since your two year anniversary. Today’s UA-cam audience probably would have “no soup for you, NEXT’ED” you 😂. Inflection and eye contact huge points as well. Notes definitely help, I have to fully prepare because I don’t personally like jump cuts (I will cover them if I can’t get around them). I try to speak in full sentences as well. I’ll do a second third or 10th take if I don’t like how it sounds so listening to what you are saying is also helpful. Eye contact, the lens is a cold dead soulless beast, behind it are engaged viewers, so it makes looking down the barrel and keeping it there challenging, but break away too much from it (especially if you have a rear facing monitor to look at yourself in) is super distracting and inadvertently disengages the audience. Agreed practice helps, impossible to get good without experience. Great video man, the hand gestures “power box” is new to me, good to know I can utilize that. Power BOX GO!
Great, simple video. I'm a trained actor, and even trying to make UA-cam videos I have to learn how to interact with the camera. Every medium is different. Nice way to summarize the approach, thanks for making it!
Bro I am going down the rabbit hole of UA-cam university as I’m trying to level up our UA-cam channels. Thank you for that game about the “power box”. Great vid man. No idea if this is useful for anyone, but there's a small tip I got (maybe from NLP) where the "past" is the audiences left and the "future" is the audiences right. So if you're saying "I used to be like this" (gesture to your right, audience left) "but now I learnt to do this" (gesture to you're left, audience right). The theory is this will be congruent with typical left to right in communication, and I've found it does really work and I notice the reaction is more buyin/engagement. e.g. when I'm delivering training I go to the audience left to 'anchor' an idea then I move to audience right, when I'm asking them to consider taking an action etc.
This is great advice for those students starting their first fully online semester this week. Many college level classes are requiring video responses to keep us students engaged with each other. Thanks for the tips!
Thanks for this often overlooked tip! Since most videos I try to start from the monologue, it is really important to get it right because if you don't you might just throw it all away.
I am about to launch into the world of UA-cam but suffer from perfectionism. Seeing the difference between this video and your early video helps me to not get hung up on getting started and to just keep practicing. You sound great :) Thanks Daniel!
Your environment is very important. I used to live in an apartment with really thin walls. It always felt awkward knowing my crazy neighbors were listening in. I could always hear every bit of their conversations, verbal and physical fights and they could always hear me making my UA-cam videos. We called the cops on them a few times. Glad I don't live there anymore.
couldn't agree more with all these tips, they're great. I just started doing this stuff and wow, it's an art. Seasoned youtubers like yourself make it look easy but it's anything but...the "um's" are the hardest to not do.
Your 2 years ago video is me right now. I'm doing 30-day UA-cam Challenge and I've posted videos for 9 days so far. I'm comfortable in front of the camera now but my intonation still bad. I also have bad grammar. It's not that bad in real life.
I definitely talk in front of the camera like you did two years ago lol. I’ve gotten better though. What makes me feel better about being on camera, is remembering that I can always edit it out.
OMG. I just started a channel and I sound exactly like you did when you started. For some reason I thought it is to certain extent natural (inborn) to have different speech tempo and clarity of the message, but now I see light in the end of a tunnel. So there is a lot of space for my improvement. Great suggestions, thanks!
SOO helpful. Glad I'm not the only one who's awkward on camera! lol. The ending sentences on a "down" is such a valuable tip I've never thought of before but it makes such a huge difference. Thanks Daniel!
The you from 2 years ago is too much like me that I actually started cringing lmao, its impressive how much you improved. Also the ending on the down thing is really important especially when editing because jump cuts flow so much more smoothly!
This is what I needed to watch! I'm struggling very much on this! I'm thinking a lot of it is my ADHD! I can only pray it gets better with the more videos I make. Doing one everyday!
I don't know if its just me, but I was staring at the dust particles floating behind you the entire video because it looks so cinematic LOL. Awesome video though Daniel! Really appreciate you taking the time to reflect on your growth and sharing with us your growing pains.
Enjoyed the video and learned quite a bit. Seeing I’m a new youtuber I can’t wait to implement these tips to help grow my channel. You just gained a new subscriber 🖤
Stumbled upon this one whilst planning how-to and tutorial style videos. Great stuff! very helpful. funny how it is when you rehearse, it sits, thenn hit record, and it all goes away, and you just sit there blankly staring at the camera "deer in the headlights" style!
I actually liked the first video. It's easy to understand, you don't look nervous. It's just less professional. I wish I could reach that level... There is actually a lot of things to think about. Not only the text and the sound of the voice. For me the bottleneck right now is the face expression. I still have a lot of things to improve. Anyways, very good video! Thanks for useful content.
I looked at my videos and realized that I do end my sentences on a higher note... Thank you for this video and pointing out some things for me to focus on!!
Man, I just came across this vid. Never seen u before. And appreciate u showing your 1st vid only 2 years ago! And now seeing how much potential there is, it’s inspiring af. New subscriber, Pickets.
Thank you for sharing this. I just started a UA-cam channel myself. It’s about music production. I love sharing my knowledge and I'm trying to inspire people. Basically giving something back to the community. Talking to the camera is really hard. Especially because I'm not a native speaker. This video gives me the hope that if I keep on going and practicing I will get better. Thanks!
randomly came across this video and I just wanted to say thank you so much for the tips! I have speech problems and social anxiety so I struggle hard with talking in front of the camera! your tips deff helped out a lot!

Very interesting. What I would recommend is listening to good podcasts. It allows you to hear how people who talk form ideas and talk at the same time.

It's definitely 'a practice makes perfect' thing lol.ever compared newest to oldest vlogs before, it's always interesting :)
I hope i can overcome it.

this self doubt is so strong when i speak on camera but then i push through & then come this voices in my head saying i'm stupid. it's not nice.

Definitely an improvement, but honestly you were pretty good 2 (well now more than 3 years) ago, much better than where some of us have to start from!

Stumbled upon this one whilst planning how-to and tutorial style videos. Great stuff! very helpful. funny how it is when you rehearse, it sits, thenn hit record, and it all goes away, and you just sit there blankly staring at the camera "deer in the headlights" style!
Really great advice to end the sentence by going down with the voice! When I talk to the camera, I often forget that. Thanks Daniel!
golden information! loved every point, especially the last one about the boardroom meeting..
Great points. I think there are some people out there who are "naturals", but I'd say most of us just get better with repetition and practice.
I looked at my videos and realized that I do end my sentences on a higher note...
Thank you for this video and pointing out some things for me to focus on!!
Make it public again man! People (I) love to see where people began!
Makes it so relatable
