How to Balance the FeiyuTech G6 MAX GIMBAL- IN DEPTH w/ Canon M50

  • In this video, I demonstrate how to balance the FeiyuTech G6 MAX Gimbal. This in-depth tutorial was highly requested after my last video where I use this gimbal as a base for my mirrorless vlogging setup- which features the Canon M50 with the Sigma 16mm f/14 EF-M.
I walk you through balancing the G6 Max Gimbal with the Canon M50 kit lens, and then move on to show you the special tricks it requires to balance it with the Sigma 16mm.
The FeiyuTech G6 Max is a budget-friendly gimbal that may not be the BEST choice for use with the Sigma 16mm, however, I was excited to find a way to make it work without having to use a much larger or more expensive gimbal.
Let me know in the comments if you have any questions! I am no gimbal pro, but I will do my best to answer how I am making this work for my videos.

I wish youtube would delete all other vids on this topic. Yours is the only one that worked for me when I bought it in January. Bought another today last week and spent 15 min trying to find your vid. Good job buddy.

Thank you, thank you - you may have saved our marriage! My husband watched the video from the manufacturer at least 20 times. No kidding. He is an electronic engineer and tends to overthink everything. I was sure that was the problem. After watching the video myself and messing with the balance for 20 minutes, I decided someone had to do a better job on a video. I searched UA-cam and there you were. We watched your video one time and 5 minutes later we were in business! So you have a new subscriber. And BTW, we love the fact you had wine help get you through. Thanks again.

This has to be the BEST 'how to balance' video on UA-cam. I am V new to creating UA-cam content and wanted a setup for the maintenance and trips in my classic car. Purely by chance I bought an M50 and G6MAX gimbal. I'll be watching more of your videos!

I literally spent two hours today trying to balance my M50 with 22mm lens and Rode VideoMicro. I was ready to chuck the gimbal out the window since it wouldn't balance with such a big mic and small lens, but I eventually discovered that it balances fine when the gimbal is turned on. I did also order the wireless Rode per your recommendation. It was very helpful to see an in-depth tutorial on balancing the M50 specifically. Thank you! 😁

So glad I watched this video. Don't even have a gimbal yet, but going to get the G6 Max for an upcoming trip. Since I'm not planning on any fancy filmmaking tricks, just need some stabilization for walking shots, I thought I'd be able to just attach the camera to the gimbal and go. Oh...no. You've really opened my eyes and shown me how naive I was ten minutes ago. Now I have stuff to consider, I'll probably still get the gimbal and take it, but now I'm forewarned, so thanks so much for the articulate and helpful video.

I know!!! I was trying to get it out sooner because I know so many ppl needed it. I'm glad you put the time into balancing it anyway, because now you probably have a good in-depth feel for the gimbal 😄👍🏼

AMaeTV oh yes - sometimes learning by doing is the best way...
And now i really know how it works 😂
One more thing: You don’t need the App for motorstrengh - it could be done with the buttons very easy ... and there is also a kind of automatic adjustment which sets the strengh of each axis according to your Camera...

Thank you for this video. You have saved my FeiyuG6 from being thrown up against the wall. I tried to follow the "quick start" instructions and was lost after charging the battery. Your step by step with caveats saved my sanity and the gimbal. I don't want to fool with apps and with my Canon G7X it works well, no "death shake!" Now I am going to your other video to see what all of those buttons are for. Thumbs up!

Thank you very much for walking us through the process. This is the 4th or 5th video that I had watched. I had an idea of what needed to be done in otder to balance the gimbal but kept getting hung up in a couple spots. Once i thought i had it figured out and turned on the gimbal the death shake was still there. I finally found your video, watched it through, followed the steps and now i have a fully functional G6 w/M50 set up. If you have any tips or tricks trying to balance with Viltrox speed booster and 50mm, please comment and tag or post a video. Thank you! I subscribed.

Just got my M6 Mark II today with the kit lens and I've got the speed booster on the way so I can use my 70-200 and 400. Saw your other video on the gimbal and I was immediately interested. My biggest concern with the gimbal was the effort needed to balance it. I shoot outside and often at a fast pace so I wondered what I would need to do if I got the gimbal balanced, used it for a bit and then took the camera off to use my 400 and then what would I have to do to get the camera back on the gimbal with the kit lens again. You answered my question towards the end and I'll be getting the gimbal next. Thank you for the video. Your presentation style is perfect and I look forward to anything you can show us about the M6 mark II.

if you ajust the tilt arm you can get the cam to hold position when you move it around
if you start with the arm in the midle, and then ajust the cam as you show on the plate, then ajust the hight of the tilt

I’m at a Western show but unfortunately I’m helping my friend with his business so I must move fast to get my shots I used my Canon 80d for interviews worth the ride go mic. The rest I shot with the G7X. I just did not have the time to set up the gimbal.😭😭 that is a roadblock to using it... if I can focus 100% on shooting my video that’s different. As always I’m so grateful for your videos. I’m back to LA tomorrow and we will see what I have to show for this trip.

I went back and re-did all of this again with my RX100 MK4. When I originally setup my gimbal I did the balancing with the lens in (camera off) and got pretty good results but since we are locked down I decided to go through all of this again and it was not balanced at all! LOL So far I really like the gimbal and have shot several vlogs with it. Heading down to our greenhouse to shoot some more video today. I report back if it made any significant difference. Of course this camera is so light compared to yours it may not. We'll see. :)

The G6 MAX - #3 "PAN AXIS" WTH!!! Total pain in the ass to get balanced!! I had shaking even after correct balancing multiple times - so I ended up doing an update on the firmware via the APP also a motor adjustment on the APP which finally got the gimbal to work without shaking. Thank God!! (Note: I was balancing a Sony a6400 with a 55mm lens.)

Now I know why I can't balance my gimbal - no glass of wine!
Do you find a mirrorless and gimbal setup (with accessories like the mic) too heavy? I have a X-T30 with a hotshoe mirror thing (so I can see my framing) and a mic + a small gimbal and it's pretty weighty. Makes me want to stick with just my phone. =)

I got it working with an M50 and the 16mm sigma lens. You won’t be able to balance it where it stays put, it’s going to slant down before you turn the gimbal on. Just balance it from the sides, and make sure it’s balance to where it can point up. The only other downside is that you cant go all the way down to inverted mode, the eye cup hits the gimbal. But other than that it works fine, battery might run out faster though lol

I need to mention that I am not an expert for video shooting or vlogging, I am just a newbie that watched a whole bunch youtube video that compromised this gimbal and I decide to try it myself and record my daily life. After using it a couple of times I can say it is just like what everyone else said on the internet, it is good and almost the best lightweight handheld gimbal for Mirrorless Camera. You can also use it with iPhone and some other smartphones.

hi Alicia! I've just got the same setup: M50 with Sigma16 (you made me buy it) and G6Max gimbal. And I have good news for you: you CAN make camera viewfinder not touch the gimbal so you get much more freedom of moving camera or gimbal up-down like if it had a smaller lens!
You need to stick camera with Sigma16 not to the very back edge of Quick Release Plate but few millimetres to front from it so that the viewfinder will pass the gimbal in 1 mm not touching it (when you rotating it manually up-down). This, of course, will make tilt axis (#1) not balanced properly and the lens will look down when gimbal is off. But! When you turn on the gimbal, it is powerful enough to raise the lens and keep it horizontally and under control! Try it.
As occurred, you don't need to balance camera perfectly, actually, if the motors are set to the max power, they will control camera anyway but just will waste more energy.
I'm also thinking about very narrow counter-weight plate to put somehow just under camera's touchscreen, but even without it the gimbal can handle it well, though the tilt motor will heat noticeably if making it work under such pressure for a long time. So if you need to shoot something "from ground", you can at least temporarily follow my advice without any harm to gimbal.
And thanks for very useful videos.

    • @dimapalyanytsya1620
      @dimapalyanytsya1620 4 роки тому

btw, I tried making a counter-weight device behind M50 screen, it could help a bit but made the whole setup heavier, and I didn't like it. In the end I decided to remove viewfinder's eye-piece rubber instead, which I really don't need and can use viewfinder still. But this is one-way operation so it's a radical solution (warning, this makes camera lose presentation look) for sake of needed functionality. Now the camera can be balanced perfectly and doesn't hit gimbal by viewfinder!

Thanks for your comments Dima, very helpful! I just bought the gimbal for my Canon M50 with a Sigma 16mm lens and an ND filter. I am still having trouble trying to balance it!
If I'm not worried about the viewfinder touching would you recommend having the camera as far back as it can go on the plate? I'm still not sure where to generally have the other axis points at. Basically the camera is very forward heavy and I want to have it balanced as close as I can so it's not hard on the motors.
Any other tips and things that are a MUST do would be greatly appreciated. Thannnnks.

    • @dimapalyanytsya1620
      @dimapalyanytsya1620 3 роки тому

@@rpvideos4118 , for me the plate even has half a centimeter more space at the back with Sigma 16mm (when fully balanced), but it's without ND filter. In your case, I hope, yes, you need to place camera even closer to the back edge of plate. Actually, in my future case too as I want to try ND filters :)
But recently I was disappointed with the gimbal as when I move this whole stuff too fast or running with it, I'm getting shaky footage because motors cannot handle it :( Now I'm thinking about Weebill S gimbal as it can easily carry big lenses and has more space around camera... G6 Max is great for M50 but only with small/stock lenses.

@@dimapalyanytsya1620 Totally. I actually ended up returning that G6 Max and got the Weebill S. I think it's way better and have had no problems with it. Hope it works out for ya!

I almost gave up and returned this gimble 😢But that motor strength tip (downloading the app) finally fixed my issue of getting an "overload" error and lots of shaking! I don't know how they don't have that in the instruction manual for heavier cameras (even though mine weights only 1.5 pounds and the max is about a pound heavier). Anyhow, thanks!

I have a Canon D200 with an 18-55mm kit lens, which balanced perfectly on this gimbal.
Tip - to balance the last axis, it’s way easier if you re-lock the previous two axis. Just don’t forget to unlock them before turning it on.
