Are there other critical settings I’ve missed? Let me know!
Remember to turn on any highlight tone alert (blinkies or zebras). Another useful one is manual focus peaking, if equipped.
I always remove the yes from the Delete, delete twice it’s removed, none of this moving to yes to confirm.
Not critical but useful are power saving options
What you want your second memory card to do. A backup of the raw files in case the primary card fails, a jpeg version for quick uploaded to social media, or backup space in case you fill the primary card.
While you haven't mentioned Olympus/OMS, one thing that flabbergasted me (when I first got the camera) was that the button with the little red dot on it was set to something other than "record movie" as a factory default. It is now set to "record movie." This is not just an OM-1 setting but dates back to several previous models, I believe.
Love how Simon is neutral amongst camera manufacturers and how he shows how the settings are on different brands!
Except for Panasonic! Maybe now that they have PDAF Simon will include them along with the “real” camera companies:)
I came here for “turn off the beeps”.
Eventually you decided to sell the camera?
I have a new camera coming, and this is perfect! Thank you Simon!
I know the 100K isn't new, but congratulations, and it's no surprise that your channel has blown up like it has. You're great at explaining things and getting to the point. I'm learning a ton from you, and I really appreciate it!
Have fun!
I have been following Simon since day 1 and truly love his tutorials. He has been very helpful and is very humble. It's also nice to follow a fellow Canadian
Thanks!
Helpful, humble, and doesn’t spend a bunch of time on fluff, which is great.
I came on Simon rather later about 3-4 months ago, I find his advice simple to follow, practical, and easy to employ. Simon is an excellent communicator concise and clear in what he says and how he says it. Watching and listening to Simon is easy and something to look forward to. ( His intro music is very catchy, what song is this? )
Me tooooo, he kicks ass!!! 💎💎💎💎

I have a great story RE diopter adjustment. I owned a nature tour charter boat company for many years and took out many people primarily interested in nature and wildlife photography. One day a client complained to me that her expensive Canon 5D MkII was a disappointment to her because the images always looked out of focus. I immediately suspect the diopter focus was the problem and asked her to hand me the camera. Sure enough when I looked through the viewfinder everything was blurred. a check of the diopter setting revealed it was way out of adjustment so I set it to my vision and handed it back to the woman. Wow! she exclaimed! You fixed it! I explained to her what the adjustment was for and added that it was important to set it for your particular vision and on we went with our 3 hr boat trip. I did notice that she kept fooling with the diopter setting throughout the trip but just figured that, like me, she was a perfectionist and was obsessed with getting it set perfectly. Only a few days later did it finally occur to me that the poor woman apparently thought that the diopter needed to be reset for every photo! The lesson in all this is "Read the camera manual from cover to cover, or stick to simple auto cameras that don't require much in the way of settings!
oh wow awesome
When your first video came out I remember thinking, "This guy gets straight to the point. I hope he makes more." And here you are, over 100K subscribers later. Congrats, Simon. By far the best channel on UA-cam. You videos have helped me so much.
Thanks very much!
I wasn't a subscriber, but I am now. This is brilliant. Well done.
You won me at the start when you told us the differences between Raw and Jpg, rather than just telling us we have to shoot Raw..
I'm a rare jog shooter. LOL
Welcome!
A minor addendum to setting #8 (diopter adjustment) - When focusing the diopter, use the viewfinder markings (reticle, guides, etc.) as a reference to verify focus. Using the image may be inaccurate if the lens isn't focused exactly right. Once the guidelines are correct and the lens is in focus, both will be visually sharp.
Great video.
Ive been an avid amateur photographer for many years now. Somehow UA-cams clever algorithms put Simons vids into my mainstream. Ive watched a few of his videos over the last few days but this is absolutely brilliant and spoken in basic English even for me to understand! Thank you Simon
I am learning all the beginner's tools for taking photos and quite honestly your examples and demonstrations of the use of the camera's settings are very easy to understand. Your photos are brilliant, colorful and very well crafted. So far my style has been landscapes, nature (especially flowers with bugs or different textures). Thank you for teaching; I'm listening and learning! Congrats for your 100+ UA-cam award-- well deserved!
Congratulations on 100,000 subscribers Simone. I started following you after your appearance on Gavin Hardcastles channel. Yours is one of the few channels I have notifications turned on. Always informative with lots of good tips and suggestions for improving my bird photography and some beautiful images too.
Thank you so much!! More chocolate for Gavin….lol
I like you. Your approach to the subject of photography is very clear and easy to digest. I have been taking photos for a long time before the digital age. What I like about Bridge and DSLR's cameras is that you save money, lots of money. Your computer becomes your darkroom. Photos that are bad can be learned from then deleted. I still remember the cost of having your shots developed, then returned to you to see all the mistakes you'd made in camera settings, wasted photos and money. Not so today. New subscriber!
Thanks for the sub!
Simon, I subscribe to many channels, but yours is one of the most helpful. You fit more valuable tips and suggestions in 11 minutes than some others spend 20 minutes or more. They spend too much time telling stories, which I find interesting but don’t have the time to listen to, unless I am trying to fall asleep of course.
When Simon uploads - we watch, and we listen.
haha Thanks!
Congratulations Simon. It’s no mean achievement and richly deserved award for your teaching skills and dedication. By chance I came upon your work a few months back and now see them regularly. Glad you include other brands as well. It’ll not be too long when you receive a golden plaque from YT. Keep them coming. JP, Chennai, India.
what i really love about your videos is that you often give the different names for settings on different camera brands.
I try to be inclusive!
Congratulations on 100K! Recently discovered your channel and I can see why you're fast rising in popularity. Your videos are well-paced, concise, super clear, and super informative. I also appreciate that you point out the naming differences of feature settings among the top 4 brands.
Thank you so much!
Congratulations on reaching your 100,000 subscribers! I was one of your early followers and have enjoyed and learned so much from you! Thank you for all the time and effort you put into your videos. You are able to show that beautiful images can be made regardless of camera brands and have kept the content quite neutral. I have learned so much from you and here’s to the next milestone!
That is awesome!
I discovered Simon a few months ago and since then I make sure to watch his excellent videos. Simon has a very broad knowledge and knows how to convey the content in a clear and accessible manner. I shoot with a Sony camera, and still benefit from great videos. Thanks Simon
Wow, 100k subscribers in less than a year! Speaks to the high quality content you offer every week. Been following since the early days of the channel. Keep up the fabulous work!
Wow, thank you!
What an amazing tutorial beautifully presented most practical and easiest way to set up the camera. Thank you Simon. Always your videos are enlightening and having an improving experience with every shoot for me. Thanks again. 🙏🏽
I have been following Simon since his very early videos, I used one of his videos in my little camera group to introduce them to wildlife photography. He can explain things much better and with more authority than me.
Congratulations. Superb teaching skills, thank you. Especially helpful is your efforts to present the naming conventions for the same feature for three brands. Concise, clear, focused, plus stunning pictures from beautiful Canada is the icing on the cake.
Thank you for the amazing videos. I appreciated how informative you are and give great examples of each topic as well as actually showing how to get to certain settings in the camera and thoroughly explaining what they mean in terms that are relatable to everyday shooting situations. I look forward to seeing more. Keep up the great work!
Congratulations again Simon, I have been following you for 9 months, and in terms of photography your advice has always been very valuable, it has allowed me to learn a lot of things that as a self-taught I probably would not have thought about, above all by doing birdlife I was able to bring many more results at home! Thanks again!
Great to hear!
Simon, congratulations on your silver plaque! I've been a follower for about a month now, and I'm certain there are many hundred thousand more coming because your content is unparalleled top notch. I especially value that whenever you talk about camera settings you mention the naming convention used by the major manufacturers. Thank you for generously sharing so much knowledge!
Awesome! Thank you!
Hi Simon, thank you for all these fantastic videos. I love the way you put them together… Entertaining, informative and educational without wasting time. I can personally say watching your videos has vastly improved my photography, and more importantly enabled me to gain more enjoyment and satisfaction with my passion of photography…
I think I have watched most of your videos as far as I can tell, although have missed out an astrophotography one, and maybe an odd other one. I am pleased to see that you mention Fuji settings (I am a Fuji user and so many channels that I follow never refer to Fuji - just Canon and Nikon, and sometimes Sony and OM Systems.) I have leaned SO much from your videos and I keep watching for my notification every week, because I love how you just get straight to the point, explaining the subject/settings clearly and succinctly. Your images and footage are amazing, and spur me on to try and do better all the time. Huge congratulations, very well deserved indeed. And thank you for all you do.
I was your first subscriber and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. :) Honestly I think I have been with you from the beginning and so glad I am. I have worked very hard to practice what you preach and just this weekend I was looking at my old "good" photos from a year ago and was shocked on how far I have come. I am not bragging at all, quite the opposite. I could not have come this far without your videos. I am truly grateful.
You're the best Dennis! Thanks!
Well deserved 100 000 subscribers. Simon is in a league of his own with regards to teaching photography.
I never use anything but AI Servo, but I have a separate focus button. Actually, I have two.
Congratulations Simon, well deserved. I have been watching your videos from the beginning and they are among my favourites. You are an excellent instructor - down to earth and practical, and have a way of explaining things so clearly. Of course, your images are amazing and inspiring to begin with.
Awesome, thank you!
Simon, thank you for including Fuji cameras in your settings guidelines. It is truly appreciated that you describe settings for more than just Cannon and Nikon cameras. Congratulations on your great UA-cam achievement and thank you for your great, helpful videos.
Welcome!
I would add that JPEGs are better if you need to print quickly. There are wedding on which you want to sell photos, and there will be a lot of photos. Culling and editing them in RAW would be much slower then just working JPEG. That being said, my go to option is shoot JPEG on one card and RAW on the other. Both have their strenghts, but a lot of YT and IG photographers forget to tell that there is a weakness to RAW, and that is slow workflow
Why not shoot in both RAW&JPG? That way when you're looking at the pictures afterwards in Photoshop or whatever Photo editing software you use, if a picture needs some editing you can use the RAW file and the ones that don't keep JPG, however the reason I recommend shooting in the setting where it saves the images in both is for that reason plus if your client wants something fixed you still have the RAW file version of that photo
@@JesusChristLivesForever33 He just said he shoots in JPEG and Raw
@NatalBeatle20 yea and if I remember correctly I said it's probably easier to shoot in both JPEG & RAW in the event that a photo needs to be edited
you also have to convert a RAW file to JPEG to send it to most people lol
RAW file processing software is set up for doing fast batch processing. You process one file and synchronise all the others. You can also set up processing recipes. You’re also making your own decisions, not relying on a processing algorithm developed in a Japanese laboratory. Outputting to JPEG is also speedy. You can do hundreds of files in a few clicks.
Congratulations, Simon, to the silver plaque! Well deserved.
Those settings are pretty much the same that I tend to find quickly and change to my likings. First and foremost: BBF. I'd be lost without it. I might need to add a custom set up with it off though, since I don't get the expected result when attaching the Timer Remote Controller - more testing needed, and maybe even more reading of manuals.
Current body is the first I have with GPS, so I have tried having that turned on a few times, but I find that it sucks the juice out of the batteries more than anything. On the same theme I have set the camera's Image Review to Off.
Congratulations on your UA-cam Silver plaque. You are simply the best teacher of photography on UA-cam. Thanks for keeping it simple and to the point!
My pleasure!
Congratulations on 100,000+ subscribers, that's good work and well deserved!
One thing, I have on my list is updating/ changing the name of the camera owner/photographer, before I start using a new camera. It's a setting many cameras have, and the information will be part the meta data of each photo shot with the camera, so it's always a good idea to make sure that information is accurate. Especially, if the new camera is a second hand camera, I prefer to have my name in the meta data of my photos rather than the name of a previous owner.
Great video of some really important things to check when you get a new camera. I always forget to change my date and time with DST (still seems to not do it automatically!).
One thing I (as a sports/action photographer) always immediately do it shut off any steady shot/optical stabilization. I'm shooting at such high shutter speeds 99% of the time that I don't need it.
I was not one of your earlier followers but I got here as soon as I could 😊
Congratulations on 100k and thank you. I've learned a lot from your videos and my photography has significantly improved because of them. In particular, the focus modes were something I'd neglected and this improved my motion photos by orders of magnitude.
Great to hear!
That was faaaaaaast! Congratulations! Blessings to you and your loved ones not only today but always!!! From Puerto Rico with love!!!
Congrats Simon I too have been here since the beginning, and thank you for I have improved significantly. I recently upgraded from film to digital within the Pentax brand and am starting to think I'm lacking in capabilities via my equipment? (shutter speed specifically) I love wildlife shooting mainly but have some exceptional shots via still photography. I'll continue to tune in, for It may just be my inexperience!
Another good setting to apply (if your camera requires it) is 'release shutter without lens,' or 'shoot without lens' something similar. This is what you need to apply if you shoot vintage or full manual lenses. On most Canon DSLR full frames, this setting is not an option because it will automatically default to "shoot without lens." I shoot with a lot of 60+ year old DKL mount lenses when I "zone focus".
I have that set on mine so I can use it with my telescope.
Wow - I'm not surprised by your mentioned success of reaching >100'000 Subscribers in just 8 month. That's the first video I've seen from you and I'm stoked! You are so humble you make the information accessable even for starters (I guess) but without being boring, slow or to patronize. Great tempo as well, obviously awesome pictures as examples, perfectly edited video... fast, usefull, interesting, valuable - GREAT! I'm a new subscriber now! Thank you.
I am constantly blown away by Simon's quality. I have recommended this UA-cam to my department for training. His content is amazing quality!
So kind!
i love your matter of fact, no drama and full of information content keep it up :) congrates on the 100k+ :)
Thank you so much 😀
Congratulations on the 100.000 award
Congrats Simon. I'm a huge fan of your work and teaching. Thanks for sharing
Congratulations on the 100k, Simon. I'm new to your channel, but I very much enjoy your information delivery. And that wonderful seascape in your intro!
This was a very helpful video. It went well with the metering and autofocus ones I watched. I've practicing what you shared on those ones this morning on the feeder birds. My cameras have three auto focus setting. One shot, ai focus and ai servo. I'm Canadian as well from Hamilton Ontario. I've also lived in Saskatchewan and Alberta. I have not had the opportunity to visit the east coast. As far as prizes you video's are the prize.
Congratulations Simon...I think I was one of the early ones, I have been following and loving your UA-cam vidoe's since the beginning...you are bang on with you information, and take the time to incoperate settings for the other popular cameras...BRAVO! Keep your informative and wonderful tutorials coming...proud of a fellow Bluenoser!!❤
Thanks neighbor!
I started photo really recently (as a casual) and this channel is a goldmine !
Great tips. Also do not forget to set your personal data and copyright settings.
Great tip!
Why is stuff moving around in the background I hope this is an Easter egg in your video that I have found! 😊
I just got into photography in the last year and these videos have helped me so much
Congratulations Simon, we’ll deserved. You are the best!
For focusing I find Back Button Auto-Focus to be significantly better than the preset method which uses the shutter button pressed half way. It offers the best of AF and AF-C depending upon whether the BBAF button is depressed or not. Simon has a separate video describing how to set it up. I highly recommend BBF/BBAF, it's the first thing I set up now on my cameras.
The time setting is equally important when shooting with your partner and combining the photos later. One of us forgot to change the time zone and synchronize our cameras on our last vacation and it made meshing our photos a royal pain. 😅
Done that. Also. your phone will change time automatically if it's connected to the cell network. Make sure the camera is set to the same time if you're taking pictures with both. Sometimes, you need to set the time to the second to give best sync results.
@@terencedwyer8903 I just found out the canon app has an option to set the cameras time to sync to the phone. I’ve been struggling for years to sync my 2 or 3 cameras and phone in the past. You really need it down to the millisecond for certain scenarios.
Simon, congratulations on finding such a dedicated following - and, it goes without saying, an enthusiastic thank you for your unfailingly useful presentations. It's wonderful to find such a skilful and engaging Canadian voice on UA-cam. I hope to return to Nova Scotia someday soon to explore your province with camera in hand. I hope you'll show us more of the province and Atlantic wildlife in future field videos.
My pleasure!
Thank you, Simon! Another great tutorial. I've been following your account for a few months now. You just showed up on my home feed one day. I always give a watch when photographers show up. What I really like about you and your channel is your way of speaking in easy to understand terminology. I'm not a novice, but not a pro either. Just started following you on IG as well. You deserve your 100k. Well done!
Welcome aboard!
Hi Simon, timestamps don't quite line up with when you're talking about the topic
On the button as usual, great. Thank you
I have been watching you for a few months. I love your work --- thanks so much for all the great videos.
Congradulations Simon.
I've been watching videos on photography from couple of others on UA-cam. They are pretty good. Since I discovered your channel about 6 months ago I am a regular visitor of your channel and my learning curve had turned steeper. Thanks a lot.
Best wishes for more milestones in your endeavours.
Many thanks!
I am new finding your channel. Congrats. Well deserved!! Learning many many things from your videos.
At the expense of sounding melodramatic, back-button focus changed my life! Just the fact that I can mash the button as hard as I want sped up the process so much!
Congratulations on reaching 100,000 followers. Well deserved; your videos provide concise insight into potential problems. Especially since many new cameras now lack comprehensive user manuals in the box.
Thank you very much!
Congratulations on achieving 100k subscribers. Well deserved. I first encountered you when you were with Gavin Hardcastle and have been following you since then. Your videos are exceptionally clear and thorough, thus greatly appreciated by many. Keep up the great work!
Cool, thanks!
this is such an amazing video. You are really awesome. many thanks
You deserve it. I always follow your wild life photography very interesting. You’re the best Simon.
I discovered your channel when I purchased my Canon R7 back in November 2023. I came from a Canon 5DM3 and found your videos on your R5 &R6 helpful. Great that you include other camera manufacturers in your videos. Congratulations and I appreciate the content you provide 👍🏻
Thanks very much!
Congrats, Simon. Love your videos and photos. Keep them coming!
Congratulations Simon! I have been following you for a few months, as soon as one of your video's popped up in my recommended list. I thought it was great that a fellow east-coaster was making these and I love your common-sense approach. Keep up the great work!
Thanks Cindy! I’m happy to have more women subscribers! I’m surrounded by amazing women photographers where I live, but my channel subscribers is mainly men. Go recruit some friends! They’ll be welcomed here!
Congratulations on the passing 100k Simon, must be doing something right.
Great tips, the R5 is certainly worth the time customising to suit one’s needs.
Thanks for sharing.
Stay safe 🇦🇺
The most interesting and practical photography UA-cam channel I have encountered. I've only watched a half dozen or so of your videos but have determined that they are of more use to me than watching fifty videos on other photography channels. I have now subscribed.
Wow, thanks!
Congratulations on your UA-cam Silver Play Button, very well deserved. Your contributions are greatly beneficial and appreciated by many.
Once again, congrats and tks for sharing your techniques, knowledge, and experiences!
Thank you very much!
Congrats on 100k. You provide such crisp and to the point tips. Easily understandable. Thanks.
Congratulation on reaching 100,000 subscribers! I enjoy your videos because you present material that is helpful and practical. It is like spending one on one time with an instructor. Thank you!
Thank you very much!
Congrats Simon! 100k subscribers is the result of your wonderful job!
When I started watching your channel, I think you had only about 30K subscribers. The value of your channel is a testament to the quality and usefulness of your content. Congratulations on the very speedy growth in the number of subscribers 👍🏻
Wow, thank you!
Discovered your content this past week ! Subscribed and And cannot say Thank You Enough! Love your in depth and specific explanations! Truly great instruction! Thank you 🙏🏻 going thru your videos one after another!!

Great video. To the point, and easy to understand. Great pictures, too.
Congratulations on the 100k plaque!! I think I saw your second video and by the fourth I was subscribed. It was something like that. From the first video I watched I saw how much information you gave and the quality of your videos. That is when I was like this is a channel where I can learn! Thank you for the great videos and information and may you have much success in all you do!!!
Awesome! Thank you!
Congratulations on your award! Well deserved. 👏👏👏 I have found all your videos great and love the ones where you take us out in the field especially❤
Thank you so much!
I’m new to this channel. Just made the switch from Nikon D60 to Canon R8. Your videos are perfect for my skill level. In the last week I learned and changed to back button focus, just learned today about adjusting exposure compensation. I programmed my “*” button for emergency action as you suggested. Not sure why but your teaching style suits me very well. Tres bien monsieur 👍
Fantastique et de rien!
Your video is really informative and relex to watch. I gain knowledge without feeling like I'm studying something.
I can't stop now.
Wonderful!
You have lots of tutorial. very informative. Thank you Simon
watching from Philippines
Thanks a nice overview of settings, Which I often forget to check at times. Always enjoy Your work.
My pleasure!
I have only recently stumbled across your channel . . . I have been missing out: but not any more! Thanks for all of the vids which I have seen [I shall go and look for whatever I have missed ]. Even though I already use most of the tips, it is nice to sit back and watch the ease and clarity but I do find useful things that I didn't already do/use/know. Thank you for your posts :)
Oh yeah, super helpful tips here! Many thanks!!
Always learn something new from your videos. Thanks for taking the time to put them together. Congrats on the play trophy! Well deserved.
Much appreciated!
I’m only surprised you didn’t reach that 100k milestone sooner. Consistently informative even for those of us who think we "know it all" 😉. Congratulations! I’ll still be here when you reach 200k!
Another great video Simon. I have been following you for a long time now, I have improved greatly because of all of your great videos. Congrats on the 100,000 subscribers, you have done well.
Fantastic!
