+SmashTheOni Yeah, I thought so. It saves time, but it's also a pretty sloppy way of MacGyvering a run function in, especially since it makes random encounters happen just as much faster as it speeds the game up.
+The One True Nobody! It *is* a general speed-up button, but not an emulator one. 19:06 I think it's important to note that the experience on Tanetane Island _is_ part of Lucas's reaction to what he's seen. Especially when he hears Flint say "Daddy's gonna beat ya". This is how he's internalized the trauma of seeing his father lose his temper and lash out physically at Abbott and Ollie. The mushrooms have brought out his deepest fears and made them reality in front of his eyes.

I didn't cry when playing this game, but I did EVERYTHING else. My heart broke at the final boss and in the beginning of the game, my hands and the rest of my body started to sweat when I started to fight Claus, and I physically screamed "No" when Flint jumped in front of Lucas and took TWO hits of PK love.
@@resarfjomes1807 I can't lie; the whole game has its sad moments. The mother dies, the brother goes missing, the father losing his cool, the world ending...it's depressing as shit, and it worries me that Nintendo won't release it worldwide.
The ending represents the rebirth of the world. The world is reborn in the image of whoever pulls the most needles, which is Lucas by the end. Since Lucas is a good person, we can only assume the new world will be born a good one. I don't really see much ambiguity, multiple characters tell you this. I guess the only ambiguity is if the cast of characters actually survive onto the new world or if a new population emerges. I prefer to think the characters are reborn though.

+Mswordx23 Just by watching Johnny's review, I can see how it is a masterpiece. I won't play it because I'm not a RPG guy most of the time, but I would gladly be a backsit gamer if one of my friends want to play the game !
+HitsujiMamoru Well, you kind of spoiled the history to yourself already, but I have to tell you to play it. I'm not a RPG guy neither, but this games have something that I'm pretty sure you may like, apart from their weirdness the gameplay feels different enough from traditional RPGs too, and that's great, not boring at all ;) I totally recommend to play Earthbound and Mother 3 in order, but the one you can't lose is this one.
Johnny, you didn't mention the dialogue after the end screen if you move around. Maybe it's optional, but I always thought you had to read it. Though it isn't clear, it implies that everyone survived and the world was reborn. Or some think they're in heaven. Also, did you notice the big Fassad reveal in Chapter 8? It's way less predictable than Claus being the masked man.
How sad it is that more comments are about the next game rather than the game the actual video was reviewing. And they all say more or less the same thing, too.
Odd thing, Mother 3 is actually more popular in America than in Japan. Japan had a somewhat bitter reception because it took itself more seriously than the other two games, which had the opposite effect in America because (like Johnny) they appreciated the greater emphasis on plot and characterization.
Coming back to this video it's hilarious seeing how much people freaked out about a guy saying he was going to review undertale. He just gave his opinion and moved onto the next game, like he does for everything else.
+TheFreedd Its also a bit disappointing there's no actual conversation between ness and lucas in the games either I was expecting them to be long lost brothers or something heh.
+minigunexo a bit of trivia, Ness was rumored to appear in EarthBound 64. Possibly use time travel to help Lucas and stop Porky. The development of EB64 has always fascinated me. I'm a sucker for beta information and concept art. I recommend you do a bit of research. You'll find a lot of interesting parallels between that game and the final product.
Given that Mother 1 was called Earthbound Beginnings, I'm willing to wager that Mother 3 would be called Earthbound Endings to be a sort of bookend to the trilogy.
Lots of salt and manbaby tears about Johnny reviewing Undertale in these comments. Personally I've had trouble getting into the game every time I've tried, but, really, people? Skip the next review if it offends you so goddamn much to be reminded that a game you don't like exists. And yeah, "I hate the fanbaaaaaase it's so toxiiiiic" well so are you, so toxic that you stink like radioactive gym socks. Juuuuuust saying.
I've always felt like an ideal title for Mother3 would be something along the lines of "Mother: an EarthBound story." It keeps the significance of "mother" as well as the titles design itself intact, conveys the fact that while being a game in the EarthBound series, it's not quite a conventional sequel, and covers how the game's story is told in chapters.
I like to imagine Lucas became silent because he was driven by one purpose and didn't have much to say about it until the final confrontation when it actually mattered. Driven by his anger, sadness, confusion, all in an attempt to save his brother, but realizing at the very end that it's simply not going to happen and finally breaking down. That's just what I think though.
+Breno Ranyere Well People love this game when they play it, but a lot of people don't use emulation and a lot of repo games carts are not trusting through the reviews. If you look on amazon the reviews warn about people selling games with memory battery not working. Thats why I didn't get the game. The lack of an American Release really hurt it. Reggie (Nintendo Head) hating the game is also a big factor.
I honestly cannot wait for an unbiased Undertale review. Every one I've read consists of 'This game is such an advancement for social justice' and 'this game is obviously better than every game ever made'- I just want to know if its a fun game. Tell me about the gameplay, the story, and the graphic. I'm glad the game 'made you a better person' (glares at Kotaku), but ffs man, how is the game as a whole?
+LucaGoes If I may, it's probably best to play the game WITHOUT knowing the story. It's designed to screw with your instincts as a gamer, and one of the plot-centered characters embodies that notion. If you want basic review stuff though... The graphics are that old retro style that seems like a slightly more pixilated Earthbound, and uses mostly text as a means of communication. The gameplay consists of walking through a linear world, interacting with the monsters that live there- by either killing or befriending them. When in a fight, you take control of a little heart. on the opponent's turn, you have to avoid enemy attacks in a kind of "Bullet Hell" style. There's status afflictions that change the heart's color, and enemies all have unique attacks that can change when paired with other monsters. The story, as I said, is best experienced blind. It's not terribly deep or complex, but it's told very well in a unique way that only video games can.
About the story, I also recommend you no spoilers, but I can give you a little summary of things you both see very early and doesn't affect your reactions: There were two races that lived in this world: humans and monsters. At some point, there was a war, the monsters lost, and they were trapped in an underground world. At some point your protagonist falls into it. You don't know why or how and it's not important. The story simply revolves around trying to leave the world. What's most interesting is the well -written characters and dialogues, and you see that from the very beginning.
The gameplay is pretty fun for the boss fights on pacifist, but the vanilla fighting for the attack and defend options for the genocide and neutral routes are pretty archaic. The game is also short, but imo, it's short and sweet unlike a lot of new games out which try to drag things out ridiculously just so that people won't whine about it non-stop.
Johnny's reviewing undertale? Oh no, it's the end of the world now. He's reviewing a popular game?!?! How could things possibly get worse from here!!! Seriously though, it's not a big deal.
The speech you gave after the gameplay was amazing, it really went to my heart and whenever I play a game that contains a story that's very heart-rending, I'll be paying attention
Looking at the comments, is it bad that I'm tired of all the "Undertale's fandom is cancer" comments? Like, I know it has a noticeable bad side (all fandoms have bad sides, but some have noticeable bad sides), but I keep seeing those type of comments EVERYWHERE and it's becoming exhausting. I don't know, I just wish for more comments that say "I'm glad Johnny is taking a look at Undertale!" or "I hope you have fun with Undertale!". I know about the bad part of the fanbase, but I don't want it to erase the good parts of the fanbase and good parts of the game.
You arent alone man. It makes me feel some type of way. Heh. Ya know, at this point, the people who complain about a fanbase being cancerous are being cancerous themselves.
I can tell this game and the story it tells really meant something to Johnny because towards the end of the plot synopsis he started speaking like a pastor, using the contrast between loud and quiet speech to convey and emphasize the emotional impact of each point he made. Great review of a great game!
+FanNintendo98 He'll probably be put off the the fact that the main character might as well be wearing a mask the whole time. The closest we get to emotion with them is an exclamation point over their head.
+strange guru I feel like it slightly fits mainly because despite Lucas being silent as there are very slight nuances that shed some light on Lucas' character (I think the reason why he's silent is because he went through so much shit that he just doesn't want to say anything, but that's my own personal theory). Either way, each game has their own unique way of telling their story, and I think that's completely fine, but what will Johnny think of it?
+FanNintendo98 Yeah, I'm pretty sure that he's not going to be a fan of that. I'm pretty curious to see his thoughts on the game, given his stance torwards the Mother series.
Also, the most shocking and emotive moment for me was when Hinawa is announced dead. Flint's reaction was just so real for his character to me, and so devastating to watch (and taking in count the graphic abstraction is just... Wow) I almost cry, I felt it, it was like a bomb for me too... This is the first and only game that has ever achieved that in me... However it is, you're right Johnny, this IS the best game of the 3.
Same. Everyone is going *UNDERTALEOJSDFIADGIGJI* Meanwhile, I am just happy that Johnny is possibly reviewing a game I never expected him to even know about.
I love this video, such a great and entertaining review of a very unique story that is extremely interesting. Great video John, I really enjoy watching and rewatching this video
19:46 So I'm assuming Johnny's gonna need a tear bucket for when he gets to Crisis Core. I finished it yesterday and it got to me so hard despite knowing what's gonna happen.
Excellent review Johnny! I busted out laughing at the Super Toilet bit. Mother 3 has been the Mother game I've wanted to play the most. I'll definitely be playing it now whenever it comes to America after seeing this review. Thanks for making such entertaining content man!
I personally think the ending is because Lucas is most likely emotionally broken. He's not in a good frame of mind or heart, and could very well be on autopilot when he pulls the final needle. Doing that is probably the only thing that's kept him going during those last few moments to pull the needle. By pulling it, the world is reflecting his heart; broken, damaged beyond repair.
I know it sounds far fetched, but I like to think that what happened at the end was that Lucas gave up He starts off the story perfectly verbose, talks and emotes just fine, and after around 3 years of having to deal with the loss of his brother and his mother he just gives up. Lucas doesn't know what to do anymore He doesn't emote, he doesn't feel, nothing. The fact he's so young doesn't help It's only just at the end when he founds out his brother is still alive, he starts to feel something, but it's so complex and dazzling to him that he just doesn't know what to do, he doesn't want to hurt him but he doesn't know what else to do Then it happens, Claus willingly kills himself to reunite with his mother. This is the nail in the coffin for Lucas. He snaps Depending on who pulls those seven needles can lead to doom or not, and seen as when Lucas pulled the needle we immediately cut to certain doom, it's easy to see Lucas ended it all, it was too pressuring and the only thing left on his mind to do was to just end it all. It may sound preachy but this doesn't seem like Mother 3 is about nature vs technology, it seems more like Mother 3 is about the nature of humans and the planet Human's are so complex that no matter what they do they're the one's that keep bringing an end to the world, commerce, Lucas' intense feelings, etc etc Human's are so generally complex that it's all too much and consistently leads to some end of the world of Mother.
GrapeIsNotPurpleEgg I guess that explains Lucas’s emotional state during the Adventure mode of Super Smash Brothers Brawl. Yes I know that game isn’t canon to any other Nintendo game but hey a guy could make up his own headcanon.
oh man, Mother 3 is one of my all time favorite games ever. i actually played it when i was young and it literally got me right in the heart. i have played it at least 5 times and i cry every single time.
I was right! Aah, I'm so excited for that bonus review. I mean, knowing Johnny, he might not even enjoy the game that much - I don't know how well his first playthrough is going to be, and your verdict of the game often relies on that. But it'll be great to see him actually tackle it.
I think this game should be called Brother. Think about it, Mother is about a space army wanting to rule Earth by revenge of a man experimenting his own son/ a powerful Alien named Gygus. Only way to calm him down is to remind him of his mother. EarthBound is about to defeat a stronger Gygus over by hope and peace on the planet earth. Mother 3 is about working together over a harder challenge of life, while heart broken of losing your loves. You see your brother, but as a puppet from Pokey. You don’t care about pulling the needle out of the ground, you want to have your Brother back.
I have to say, this is one of your best reviews. I'm glad you enjoyed your time with Mother 3, which is one of my favorite games of all time. While some people criticize Mother 3 for not containing as large of a world or as much exploration as Earthbound, I feel that the story and the much more developed characters more than make up for it even though I also really enjoy Earthbound. Here's hoping those rumors are true Mother 3 finally gets released in the west soon.
+SmashTheOni Considering the fact that Earthbound and MOTHER 3 have been seen as sacred cows since the day they were born, I don't think he's going to be hiding his true opinions on Undertale any time soon. Though, honestly, I haven't seen a lot of people getting mad over John not liking Earthbound, probably, because, unlike Undertale, Earthbound's fanbase isn't full of juvenile control freaks (If you've ever seen someone try to stream or Let's Play Undertale, you know exactly what I'm talking about.).
+PsychicVortex It definitely should be a teen game, there is even cussing in it (which could have just been added by the translators) so if it does get released it probably wouldn't get censored TOO hard, unless they flat out make it a kids game, which is kinda impossible considering all of the death, heartbreak and alot of other scenes in the game.
I am SO glad that you enjoyed Mother 3! It's one of my favourite games of all time. That ending kills me every time. It just strikes the right sad emotional cord with me. Just like Persona 3 did.
+Andrew Browning (Ajustice90) Anyone who watched streams with him in it, I think. Not sure why he kept it a "secret" here until now, but he said what the game was gonna be in plenty of streams.
18:22 I'm four years late but the reason why Lucas is mute after Chapter 4 is because he's the central protagonist within the last four chapters in the game. The same thing happens with Flint in Chapter 1 and Duster in Chapter 2, it still doesn't excuse Lucas's lack of interactivity compared to Flint, Duster, and even Salsa but its something that tends to happen throughout the game.
4:00 It's "Klowse"; rhymes with house. I originally pronounced his name that way too actually. 13:16 It took the whole plunger! So much clogging! (sucks thumb) 15:30 LMAO, I love your higher-pitched and drawn-out "welp" and the pop at the end of it! Pure gold~! XD
+abloogywoogywoo Johnny B. Goode is also the song that plays when you battle hippies, and a gang leader. Johnny confirmed for hippe and/or gang leader.
Honestly just coming back to this review YEARS later cause I was finally able to play mother 3 for the 1st time, and the ending SHOOK me. I (in Lucas’ place) I think the ending occurred the way it did due to how much pain Lucas HAD to be in during the final battles. There’s no way bro wasn’t grieving and probably overcome with such negative emotion, that the ending was a literal picture of his world falling apart.
When Snake says "no stealth bombers in sight..." The first time I played this I was like "No shit Snake. They're STEALTH bombers." Now I realize it was a bluff.
Johnny, at the end with the black screen, did you move around? At that point you are able to move around the "END?" word in that black space and characters speak to you. Did you forget to do that, or do it and not include it in the video?
Now, when I play RPGs, the stories they tell are always outstanding to me. The only problem I ever have with RPGs are LEVEL GRINDING. So what I normally do to compensate for the time I feel like I'm losing is put on a show next to me, like Twin Peaks, Quantum Leap, Breaking Bad, Lost, or something else. But when I played Mother 3, the music was SO GOOD, that I couldn't turn down the volume! I absolutely LOVED this game. I don't know the name of the music piece you use at the end of the video. Could you enlighten me please?
Great video Johnny, been watching/listening to a bunch of your stuff lately, thanks for the goods man 🙏 I just finished Mother 3 for the first time (just recovered from those gut punches in the ending too) - I saw this video long before playing it, and I'm just watching it again now to help encapsulate the experience I've just had a little better. It's perfect for that. 🙏 Just commenting to say, also: Going in, I was aware of Lucas' newfound silence in the latter half of the story courtesy of this video, but I just wanted to say, I think the text that comes up during the optional fights with the illusions of his relatives on Tanetane Island sequence (the trip segment) give a really valuable insight into the nature of Lucas' inner monologue, and I think it proves beyond a doubt that Lucas' acquired silence is a direct result of him being lost in his thoughts, tortured by his mind about how much he should blame the loss of his brother and mother (and by extension, the physical absence of his father - really the complete disintegration of his once pretty literally picture perfect family) on himself. They make some quite clear references to such a sentiment in that section. It may be worth looking up the dialogue to see how much it seems like they tried to serve that role with this section of the game. I probably need to do it myself - I missed a couple of the fights. Anyway, six years later, just wanna say, totally agree with your analysis here, can't discern a clear favourite myself (on personal taste I truly feel all three have different virtues that make it hard to discern) - and yeah, very much appreciate your content mate, well wishes from Australia (now that I'm saying 'mate') 😊🌏
Wonderfully said ^ I hope Johnny gets the chance to check out your comment mate it's a really great summation of what Mother 3 is all about. I know it sounds dumb but I love coming back to this comment section to see what people really think of this game because this was such a fantastic review by Johnny. Introduced my to possibly my favourite RPG of all time.
Tbh I find both overrated, but Mother 3 less so. The Mother series have some great moments but I can't be arsed to play through the games with their somewhat lackluster RPG mechanics, which UT seems to compensate for, but then digs itself into a hole with the story and thinks all you need to be quirky is subvert a few tropes and break the fourth wall, fuck that shit, the latter is so goddamn annoying. And it's pretty annoying to see something literally everywhere, constantly, for weeks, or even months. That said, people are allowed to like what they want.
Nice review man! You were right about the feels this game gives you. They really knew how to use music, character development and writing to give you a whole new experience.
Man if there's one thing I love about the Mother Trilogy, it's the story. Each game (especially Mother 3) have great stories. Mother 3 is genuinely sad as well it really is heart-wrenching.
Porky is a very sad story. He just wanted to be away from those who hated him, at the end he got what he wanted. The fact that he actually admired Ness, as shown in mother 3 always gets me. He is actually still alive 5.5 billion years into the future, trapped in the sphere.
Agreed. I mean, Undertale is still phenomenal, but Mother 3 has better story and more "moments", as well as better developed characters. I can easily cry at Mother 3, but at Undertale i don't. Undertale feels like it's an Indie RPG that is inspired by Earthbound and tries to be "the next Earthbound" when really it's an entirely original game. Mother 3 is the TRUE "next Earthbound", mixed with stuff that the other 2 games didn't do. I don't know exactly what I'm trying to say, but you get the idea.
+Joshiesgotagun - No he meant Undertale since technically speaking it is connected to Mother if you count the whole Earthbound Halloween Hack and Undertale being the same story
This is a great review because there are a lot of valid criticisms here that I never thought about when playing Mother 3. How Lucas isn’t initially a mute, the plot dump at the end, etc. I always look forward to John’s reviews because his perspective will usually bring up something I hadn’t considered which is always fun to hear even years later.

How sad it is that more comments are about the next game rather than the game the actual video was reviewing. And they all say more or less the same thing, too.
Leg Lord wtf are you talking about?
Yeah honestly I don't understand the point of this comment
Bout 4 years ago, all these comments were “undertale this”, “undertale that” sanssanssanssanssanssanssanssans
You do know that there is an extra scene after the destruction of the nowhere islands, right?
+FlourtownBrown Try moving the D-Pad at the "End?" screen.
+FlourtownBrown wait really? whats does the extra scene show?
+FlourtownBrown He showed footage from the cast scene which is after that, so he did see it
Rachel Herbst It's a black screen with characters talking about how everyone is alive and well.
Does anybody know who this guy actually is?
Odd thing, Mother 3 is actually more popular in America than in Japan. Japan had a somewhat bitter reception because it took itself more seriously than the other two games, which had the opposite effect in America because (like Johnny) they appreciated the greater emphasis on plot and characterization.
Coming back to this video it's hilarious seeing how much people freaked out about a guy saying he was going to review undertale. He just gave his opinion and moved onto the next game, like he does for everything else.
damn this shit is dark and twisted, wasn't expecting that from playing with the characters on smash ahah
Looks can be deceiving.
+TheFreedd Its also a bit disappointing there's no actual conversation between ness and lucas in the games either I was expecting them to be long lost brothers or something heh.
minigunexo Yeah I don't know why but I always thouhgt they were cousins lol
+minigunexo a bit of trivia, Ness was rumored to appear in EarthBound 64. Possibly use time travel to help Lucas and stop Porky. The development of EB64 has always fascinated me. I'm a sucker for beta information and concept art. I recommend you do a bit of research. You'll find a lot of interesting parallels between that game and the final product.
IT's such a shame so much of the game was left out, even in the GameBoy version there's so much they didn't put in...
Johnny: "I named the characters after my own family."
Me: "You weren't supposed to do that!"
Given that Mother 1 was called Earthbound Beginnings, I'm willing to wager that Mother 3 would be called Earthbound Endings to be a sort of bookend to the trilogy.
Played this game last summer on pc emulator. It blew me away.
This game blew my mind and also made me cry a river.
This game’s ending made me damn weep for 5 minutes straight
So, did he not know about the secret on the "The End" screen?
yikes. How can you even miss that?
Absolutely flabbergasted to see parts of this review in the Earthbound USA documentary
Thank you for these! Always was interested in the series! Especially this game!
Your in for a treat
+Omar Dajani FINALLY FUCKING UNDERTALE
+Lucky2000Zx UNDERTALE IS GOOD SHIT!
+Quinn The Quartz I'm not interested in Undertale, thank you very much
Lucky2000Zx Okay, fuck it! You're gonna have a bad time!
Well said Lewis
Nin10Boy 6464 fuc you
The hells your problem?
"So toxic you stink like radioactive gym socks"
I love this insult. How much you selling it for? 😍
The One True Nobody! I guess I'm toxic cause I hate a game
After understanding Mother 3's story, I really caught the feels when I noticed that Claus was named Mark
Mother 3 is a beautiful game.
And I deeply hope it gets a dubbed release.
OH SHIT JOHNNY YOUR JUMPING INTO THE FANDOM OF LEGENDS.
Well it has a fan translation if you don't want to wait for an official. Though it is a the GBA
KidSnivy69 Yeah. My GBA died years ago. D:
Zeno Rockbell got a DS or DS lite?
KidSnivy69 nah
If Nintendo would eventually release "Mother 3" overseas, they should call it "Earthbound: Future".
Pig to the Future.
+Michael O'Keefe Or Earthbound: Finale?
Earthbound: Endings?
+Michael O'Keefe I always imagined it being referred to as Earthbound: Curtain Call (mostly because the Curtain Call theme near the end of the game).
Who's betting 5 little Mr Saturns that Nintendo might end up calling it "Earthbound Advance"?
I've always felt like an ideal title for Mother3 would be something along the lines of "Mother: an EarthBound story." It keeps the significance of "mother" as well as the titles design itself intact, conveys the fact that while being a game in the EarthBound series, it's not quite a conventional sequel, and covers how the game's story is told in chapters.
Dunno if you missed this or just didn't mention it but...
Try using the D-pad on the "END?" screen.
That's just what I think though.
what is the deal with the third game beeing better than the second and people only caring about the second?
+Breno Ranyere different tastes in narrative. Some people like the silly moments in EarthBound. Some like the narrative of Mother 3.
+Breno Ranyere Talk to Mario and Zelda on that note.
Mother 3 is much harder to access as opposed to earthbound which is on the wii u store and had an American reease
+Breno Ranyere because only the second was localized. So there are a lot of people who haven't played M3.
(Sees he named Claus Mark) Well shit...
+Nintendoman1998 Should of called Lucas 'Solid' and Claus 'Liquid'
+Nintendoman1998 ikr
I'm sure there's a story I don't know
Happily chubby flygon Mark is his brother. Now imagine the game's final boss.
+Nintendoman1998 Lol, and his name's Johnny XD. "Oh hi, Mark."
The fact that in the span of about a day and a few hours I've watched this 27 minute video about 4 times probably speaks to how much I love this game.
+mariofan1ish yeah, the graphics could've been better, honestly speaking, but the music was awesome!
Also, yeah, it's the best to do the game blind
+LucaGoes The Completionist did a fantastic review of Undertale. You could probably see that to tide you over while Johnny plays it.
About the story, I also recommend you no spoilers, but I can give you a little summary of things you both see very early and doesn't affect your reactions:
There were two races that lived in this world: humans and monsters.
+Ethan Seigal (SuperEthanWorld) Thank you. I wish people would lighten the fuck up.
You arent alone man. It makes me feel some type of way. Heh. Ya know, at this point, the people who complain about a fanbase being cancerous are being cancerous themselves.
Yeah, I honestly see more comments like those across the internet than the actual bad part of the fanbase.
meh
+Ethan Seigal (SuperEthanWorld) Except that there are no "good parts of the game," except for the music.
I can tell this game and the story it tells really meant something to Johnny because towards the end of the plot synopsis he started speaking like a pastor, using the contrast between loud and quiet speech to convey and emphasize the emotional impact of each point he made. Great review of a great game!
I wonder does anyone think Johnny might complain about Undertale going the silent protagonist route again?
+FanNintendo98 He'll probably be put off the the fact that the main character might as well be wearing a mask the whole time. The closest we get to emotion with them is an exclamation point over their head.
+strange guru I feel like it slightly fits mainly because despite Lucas being silent as there are very slight nuances that shed some light on Lucas' character (I think the reason why he's silent is because he went through so much shit that he just doesn't want to say anything, but that's my own personal theory). Either way, each game has their own unique way of telling their story, and I think that's completely fine, but what will Johnny think of it?
He might be annoyed by the emotionless face, but your character does say things.
+FanNintendo98 Yeah, I'm pretty sure that he's not going to be a fan of that. I'm pretty curious to see his thoughts on the game, given his stance torwards the Mother series.
But in Undertale the dialogue box at least tells you your character's thoughts and actions that speech isn't used to indicate.
This was the first game that made me cry.
Official Mother 3 translation announced tomorrow and comes out next week...
+Mike Burden LIES!!!
I need evidence... 😑
This was a joke referencing Johnny review the fnaf series the day before fnaf 4 was announced
Oh
Funny that you mention FNAF....
I'm just glad somebody's at least acknowledging LISA's existence...
Same. Everyone is going *UNDERTALEOJSDFIADGIGJI*
Meanwhile, I am just happy that Johnny is possibly reviewing a game I never expected him to even know about.
Yeah, good on him for actually doing it.
Dee Zee dog its a fucken rpg maker game?
It was nice to see this reveiw featured in earthbound USA.
I wonder if you're still waiting to play this game.
@@Saxjon same..
I personally think the ending is because Lucas is most likely emotionally broken. He's not in a good frame of mind or heart, and could very well be on autopilot when he pulls the final needle. Doing that is probably the only thing that's kept him going during those last few moments to pull the needle. By pulling it, the world is reflecting his heart; broken, damaged beyond repair.
the world doesn't get destroyed at the end of the game. You should play it because Johnny missed the ending.
I know it sounds far fetched, but I like to think that what happened at the end was that Lucas gave up
He starts off the story perfectly verbose, talks and emotes just fine, and after around 3 years of having to deal with the loss of his brother and his mother he just gives up. Lucas doesn't know what to do anymore
He doesn't emote, he doesn't feel, nothing. The fact he's so young doesn't help
It's only just at the end when he founds out his brother is still alive, he starts to feel something, but it's so complex and dazzling to him that he just doesn't know what to do, he doesn't want to hurt him but he doesn't know what else to do
Then it happens, Claus willingly kills himself to reunite with his mother. This is the nail in the coffin for Lucas. He snaps
Depending on who pulls those seven needles can lead to doom or not, and seen as when Lucas pulled the needle we immediately cut to certain doom, it's easy to see Lucas ended it all, it was too pressuring and the only thing left on his mind to do was to just end it all.
It may sound preachy but this doesn't seem like Mother 3 is about nature vs technology, it seems more like Mother 3 is about the nature of humans and the planet
Human's are so complex that no matter what they do they're the one's that keep bringing an end to the world, commerce, Lucas' intense feelings, etc etc
Human's are so generally complex that it's all too much and consistently leads to some end of the world of Mother.
GrapeIsNotPurpleEgg I guess that explains Lucas’s emotional state during the Adventure mode of Super Smash Brothers Brawl. Yes I know that game isn’t canon to any other Nintendo game but hey a guy could make up his own headcanon.
But Lucas didn't end the world. Everyone is still alive
oh man, Mother 3 is one of my all time favorite games ever. i actually played it when i was young and it literally got me right in the heart. i have played it at least 5 times and i cry every single time.
Think about it,
Mother is about a space army wanting to rule Earth by revenge of a man experimenting his own son/ a powerful Alien named Gygus.
It's obvious you have never played Mother
1:15 Personality I believe it would be Earthbound 2 due to the fact that Earthbound 2 was straight up mentioned in Fourside in Earthbound
or Earthbound End because it's the final game in the series
I have to say, this is one of your best reviews. I'm glad you enjoyed your time with Mother 3, which is one of my favorite games of all time. While some people criticize Mother 3 for not containing as large of a world or as much exploration as Earthbound, I feel that the story and the much more developed characters more than make up for it even though I also really enjoy Earthbound. Here's hoping those rumors are true Mother 3 finally gets released in the west soon.
Even though I played this game three times and watched 2 lps on it, I still cried when Johnny was describing the ending. Gets me every time.
So Shigesato Itoi pulled a Christopher Nolan with the ending of Mother 3.
Solomona Leiato eh more like a Stanley Kubrick than a Christopher Nolan
Don't be afraid to criticize UnderTale.
Considering his review of SA2, I don't think he's afraid to.
Did anyone else try to not get the Franklin Badge on a second playthrough?
is it even possible
And if this game gets an actual english release, expect it to be censored AF, Nintendo seems to be doing a lot of that lately.
Not just Nintendo. Seems to be happening with quite a few companies lately.
+Karl Schweinfurth I would prefer it to be higher age restriction than censored personally.
+PsychicVortex pretty much seriously...
Sion Barzahd The first two Mother games are also rated T
25:49 Lol, I first played it at age 9, and I wasn't scarred. I was more scarred by the final battle of EarthBound alone than I was Mother 3.
I am SO glad that you enjoyed Mother 3! It's one of my favourite games of all time. That ending kills me every time. It just strikes the right sad emotional cord with me. Just like Persona 3 did.
27:05 CALLED IT! Who else called it from the start of this marathon?
80% of the commentors?
+Andrew Browning (Ajustice90) Anyone who watched streams with him in it, I think. Not sure why he kept it a "secret" here until now, but he said what the game was gonna be in plenty of streams.
+Andrew Browning (Ajustice90) i actually thought he was going to review the earthbound halloween hack
***** i tend to forget a lot of things in the streams
Overratedtale
Daily reminder: LUCAS NEEDS A FUCKING HUG!
< Insert "last time I came this early she left me" joke >
FeelsBadMan
yep
18:22 I'm four years late but the reason why Lucas is mute after Chapter 4 is because he's the central protagonist within the last four chapters in the game. The same thing happens with Flint in Chapter 1 and Duster in Chapter 2, it still doesn't excuse Lucas's lack of interactivity compared to Flint, Duster, and even Salsa but its something that tends to happen throughout the game.
4:00 It's "Klowse"; rhymes with house. I originally pronounced his name that way too actually.
13:16 It took the whole plunger! So much clogging! (sucks thumb)
15:30 LMAO, I love your higher-pitched and drawn-out "welp" and the pop at the end of it! Pure gold~! XD
*sees Johnny try out genocide run in Undertale before a pacifist one*
No! Johnny No! No! No!
No! Johnny No! No! No!
Johnny Be Good!
I see what you did there.
Be good. THEN kill everything >:3
*tips hat* well played
+abloogywoogywoo Johnny B. Goode is also the song that plays when you battle hippies, and a gang leader. Johnny confirmed for hippe and/or gang leader.
+abloogywoogywoo It's an RPG you're supposed to hit people with sticks to win tho.
IMO the best in the series
Mother 3 is one of my favorite games ever made. It's more than a game. It's an experience. And I love it for that
Honestly just coming back to this review YEARS later cause I was finally able to play mother 3 for the 1st time, and the ending SHOOK me.
BTW there is a fan project making Mother 4
Don't think he cares
+testyourmine He knows I'm pretty sure, maybe a review sometime after its release :P
+Michael Jacobs (Mikal) it got delayed a billion times I don't think it's gonna come out anytime soon
+testyourmine SHHHH, don't tell Nintendo, they'll send lawyers faster then you could say Mama Mia
I know I'm ruining the joke, but Itoi gave M4 his blessing.
I'm years late but it's Mom's Hometown, or in Smash Bros it's MOTHER 3 Love Theme
@@hollisdodd6853 Haha, I forgot i wrote this. I did find it though! Mother 3 still lands in my top 3 games of all time
Great video Johnny, been watching/listening to a bunch of your stuff lately, thanks for the goods man 🙏 I just finished Mother 3 for the first time (just recovered from those gut punches in the ending too) - I saw this video long before playing it, and I'm just watching it again now to help encapsulate the experience I've just had a little better. It's perfect for that. 🙏
Just commenting to say, also: Going in, I was aware of Lucas' newfound silence in the latter half of the story courtesy of this video, but I just wanted to say, I think the text that comes up during the optional fights with the illusions of his relatives on Tanetane Island sequence (the trip segment) give a really valuable insight into the nature of Lucas' inner monologue, and I think it proves beyond a doubt that Lucas' acquired silence is a direct result of him being lost in his thoughts, tortured by his mind about how much he should blame the loss of his brother and mother (and by extension, the physical absence of his father - really the complete disintegration of his once pretty literally picture perfect family) on himself.
22:08 B U T W H O W A S P H O N E ? ! ? !
I'm gonna get hate for this but:
>People praising Mother 3 = Treated like normal
>People praising Undertale = Gets called Cancerous
That's because the mother fan base isn't as big as the undertale fan base, and it also isn't as cancerous.
I get that mother fanbase isn't as big as Undertale but I still find it a double standard.
Mother fans are superior
Tbh I find both overrated, but Mother 3 less so.
The Mother series have some great moments but I can't be arsed to play through the games with their somewhat lackluster RPG mechanics, which UT seems to compensate for, but then digs itself into a hole with the story and thinks all you need to be quirky is subvert a few tropes and break the fourth wall, fuck that shit, the latter is so goddamn annoying. And it's pretty annoying to see something literally everywhere, constantly, for weeks, or even months. That said, people are allowed to like what they want.
It’s not about the game but about the fan base. The Mother series doesn’t have a cancerous fan base unlike Undertale
If I may ask, after you play Undertale could you play Xenoblade Chronicles or Mother Gognitive Dissonance.
I agree, Xenoblade is a WONDERFUL game!
I've been asking him to look at CogDis ever since he first announced an Earthbound marathon.
+Corbin Me He said he's doing Star Fox next
***** He said he would do a few individual games in between Undertale and StairFax.
Ace in the Hole So your saying theres a chance?
If Earthbound 64 was not canceled and became a full game, I am sure it would be much better than Bubsy 3D.
Yeah, but most things are.
+Aaron Bassow You mean everything right?
Bubsy 3d was awful.
+Aaron Bassow
Even Undertale. Heyoo!!
+Arturo Bernal That's exactly like saying that the game would probably be better than a fucking pile of shit...
13:17 made me die laughing
"Undertale review"
Hope you got some fries Johnny, because you're going to get plenty of salt for THAT one.
I rewatched all your Zelda and Sonic reviews. gave me so much nostalgia, i used to watch your vids all the time. glad to be back

“Super Toilet”
“AHHH!”
this is my favourite RPG of all time. Yes, more than Undertale. Come at me.
+Alexander Potec Undertale doesnt even compare to MOTHER 3.
+Accept no Substitutions undertale is mother 3 light. it tries to go for the same things but does it considerably worse IMHO
+Alexander Potec
I'm with you on that.
+Alexander Potec MOTHER is so much better than UNDERTALE... My favorite is EarthBound, personally.
I'm getting excited for Johnny vs Star Fox Adventures. That game is severely underrated
i am excited for Johnny vs Horrible Motion Controls: That Ruined The Game

Undertale? Oh... you meant to say Starfox. It's ok.
Le sigh.
I'm so sick of Undertale everywhere.
+Joshiesgotagun I fucking love your profile pic.
+Joshiesgotagun - No he meant Undertale since technically speaking it is connected to Mother if you count the whole Earthbound Halloween Hack and Undertale being the same story
ThatNormalBunny You know he was joking right?
Avery Jenson - Yea but i thought i would still answer because i am bored
Wait. I thought Lucas became a mute out of pure shock of everything that had happened to him at a tender age.
