I like how Snake's character model gets thinner in Metal Gear 2. This series isn't about big hulking tough dudes. It's about clever sneaky dudes. Like, they should be fit, but Snake's not exactly supposed to be the Incredible Hulk.
+SelfAwarePedant It's funny you say that especially when in Metal Gear Solid he managed to withstand a close range canon blast with nothing more than an epic sliding action sequence (though I will say right now Twin Snakes...really LOVES the action sequences). =) Then you've got MGS4 raiden who manages to tank an armed nuclear weapons fortress with 1 arm no less. It really does make me appreciate how over the top MGS can be at times ^_^

By technicality, Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake were actually bonuses from the PS2 (re)release "Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence," where it was included on Disc 2 of the set, making their U.S. debut in 2006 alongside Metal Gear Online among other goodies.
+joakkar Oh absolutely the one thing that blew my mind about it is how well it adapted Item Management considering it only had 5 buttons to work with. :) Really fun game too.
oh I kinda forgot that gbc is part of the ps1 gen. I guess it technically would fall in the solid series video then. I just thought it was weird for him not to mention it since he even bothered playing like 4 different versions of bubsy so I take it he pretty much never misses titles
It's the best I've played, hope he gets around to it. Honestly it beats out mgs3 for me, because the game design is just more varied and interesting. Lots of set pieces and new stuff pretty much every level, and all of it is fun. It's amazing what they could do with the gbc.
Chris Sukam To be fair so is Twin Snakes, & Ghost Babel. Nonetheless however they are part of the series and a very worthy games to the series I might add.
i know im late, but the joke about the "fuck me" code is wrong. it does spawn you at the metal gear room, but WITHOUT every weapon in the game, in fact, they spawn you with only cigarettes. hence why you input "fuck me". also a second revision removed the code, it was only on some cartridges.
The keycard system is somewhat improved in MG2SS. For every three cards you collect, you can swap them for a "master card" in building one that does the work of all three. Once you've collected all 9 cards and swapped them for the 3 masters, you can swap them for a card that does the work of card 1-9.
+BlueSilver at least there are people who can actually explain metal gear. Not even square enix understands what the fuck is up with kingdom hearts plot
no, you can't. There's literally stuff the creators themselves haven't bothered explaining and they're hoping to cash in on even more extensions to birth by sleep to do it. The only games I haven't played so far are DDD and Re:Coded but I doubt they explain where riku got the keybade he just randomly gave kairi at the end of KH2, when did namine randomly dissapear and appear as some ghost thing in KH2, or why donald and goofy are unable to recognize roxas in the picture form KH2 given they were pretty close to Ventus in BBS and they look exactly the same. I mean seriously, they haven't even explained why nobody from radiant garden can recognize kairi despite her being the princess and that was back from the first game.
First off, you dont know me to tell me i cant explain the plot. Secondly Namine didnt disappear she just recombined with ,kairi. Third, the only people from hollow bastion that we meet are leon and the gang. Also its been like ten years and the only similarities are that she still has red hair. Fourth numora says that the whole riku getting kairi's keyblade thing will be explained by kh3. And last but not least, donald and goofy are just stupid. They dont recognize yen sid's tower in kh2 either, but numora says its because yen sid redecorated.
+joakkar Riku's Keyblade: I'll give you this and pulling Kairi's Keyblade from nothing. Considering the last time we saw him he STILL had Soul Eater, I don't know how he got Way to the Dawn yet (or whatever the hell hilariously colorful one he gave Kairi). If they waited until AFTER the anti-KH weapon threw a bunch of light on him to give him that, it'd make a little more sense. Namine's appearances: Her ties to Sora. They plainly state how they connect this when Roxas talks to Kairi in the prologue. And Namine says later they'll still be around as long as Sora and Kairi stay close. So Sora comes running for her, Roxas ends up being sort of awake (might explain the scene with Axel) and Namine breaks Kairi out. Donald and Goofy not relating Roxas to Ventus: Pretty much a lazy retcon, same with Donald freaking out that Yen Sid lives at the tower. Ven didn't exist as a character yet, so they flat-out goofed on that continuity. Nobody recognizing Kairi: The last time the Final Fantasy Radiant Garden group could have possibly seen her was when she was like three/four years old, I heavily doubt ANYONE from Radiant Garden actually knew what their toddler princess looked like.
johnny i need you to know that this was the series that got me into the metal gear games in 7th grade. i remember people weren't happy that you did EVERY GAME but i wouldn't have it any other way.
So far so good. I dont even care how long these take to make but TAKE YOUR TIME w this series! Absorb and re absorb all of the convolutedness we've come to love
I always said MG and MG2 introduced so many staples the series would follow and for an 8 bit console that scale is incredible. In fact that's the thing you'll notice in MGS the biggest difference between MG2 and MGS is the sheer scale and scope of everything MG2 introduced both game-play and especially plot wise leaped into the 3d world so damn beautifully. Another thing worth mentioning is MG2's pricetag which is almost as high as Shantae's for the GBC so if you wanna play MSX2 style be prepared to pay a small fortune for it...assuming you can find it in the first place.:) Brilliant Video John and worth the wait.
I've lost track how many times I've watched this video. I think this is my favourite review of yours period. I can't put my finger on why but... it's so soothing.
Man!!!!!! I totally missed this Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake. I mean I'm 35 years old and I grew up on metal gear on the NES, and all through the PS2/GC and other consoles. But I never knew of this one my GOODNESS.
+Jerec 12 Doesn't matter he said he may review AcId and that's not canon either. Is there's enough space for it then I assume he will but for the moment I'd say he's more like going to take the main titles ya know?
Hmm, a password called "Fuck me" huh? Well, and I thought your Wii U letting you watch porn was Nintendo's big screw up in trying to make themselves "family friendly." By the way, I'm not kidding, you can actually watch porn on your Wii U.
It's actually known that the Big Boss that Snake took out in the original Metal Gear is Venom Snake, Big Boss' phantom from Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Interesting, right?
Johnny, will this marathon only include the mainline stuff (MGS2, Snake Eater, Guns of the Patriots, Portable Ops, Peace Walker, Ground Zeroes, and Phantom Pain?
Johnny a couple things I want to add with MG2 !. They technically fixed the card swapping issue in away, you can find colored security cards that combine 3 cards into 1 like the red master card being cards 1-3 combined together, the blue master card being cards 4-6, and so on. Granted you still have to swap between different cards to open unmarked doors but I think its better to swap between 3 cards to open a door as opposed to swapping between 9 cards !!. To elaborate more on MG2's development cycle, during the time Snake's Revenge was in development, one of the developers actually found himself on the same train ride with Mr. Kojima himself. He informed Kojima that they had a sequel for the NES version in the works and asked Hideo Kojima to make the true sequel to Metal Gear 1. So Kojima made Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake on what sounded like a dare
What really cracks me up is that it sounds like even one of the devs for Snake's Revenge was like "Nah, this ain't a sequel. Kojima, show them how it's done."
I figured he was killed of in Metal Gear 2, since that is the game where you see "Big Boss" get incinerated. And yet he is completely okay in Metal Gear Solid 4, and we were given not a single explanation.
BobTheArchmage Venom was killed in MG1. In MG2 snake severely burned BB and the patriots took BBs body and used parts from Liquid & Solidus and kept him in a deep sleep.
1:05 It was also popular in Europe, South-America, the Middle-East, the Arabic world and the former USSR. I really enjoyed this video by the way, really thorough and nicely made.
So glad to see Snake's Revenge discussed in detail and held up to the original without nostalgia blindness... It's so much better than Metal Gear from a gameplay perspective. Plenty of environments, very few (if any) obtuse puzzles or obscure objectives, a kickin' soundtrack... Pretty much the only thing that's remotely bad about it is the 2D sections, but since it comprises maybe... like 5-10% of the game tops, it's hard to fault. I grew up hating Metal Gear, but I played Snake's Revenge until my fingers were raw... And it remains one of the few NES games as a kid I put the time and effort into actually beating all the way through. I still remember a while back when an older teenager told me that he was into "the original Metal Gear; ya know, the one from the Playstation." I tried to explain there were several before that, to which he looked at me quizzically, as though I had just suggested that aliens came to earth and gave the Mayans game systems known as the MSX and NES long before modern civilization began.
I hope people pay attention to Metal Gear 1 and 2 because they are very key to the lore of the overall franchise. The only reason I say this is because many seem to overlook them when finding the order of when these games occur. They place themselves right after MGSV and right before MGS1
@somecallmeJohnny its good to have you back man, I love your marathons but with this review is just what i needed and i'm so excited for more. Part of me has to wonder if Metal Gear plays better on MSX with a keyboard, like if the items are all bound to keys and you could switch them instantly for rooms like the gas room. I kinda doubt that’s what it’s like, but it’d be interesting if that was the case. Also something I didn’t realize before, having not seen the series, Terminator Big Boss from Snake’s Revenge is literally just a standard Battletype Boomer from Bubblegum Crisis.

Metal Gear: Sure thing~
it even grew a penis in the second game
Accept no Substitutions hot
I see this in my sub box, and I have to leave for school in two minutes, why Johnny?
Are you still in school?

wat?
I'm loving the professionalism that is happening in your recent vids, John.
Coming from someone who hasn't experienced the Metal Gear franchise (yet), this was a joy to watch & didn't really spoil anything for me.
Keep up the good work! :)
+Raven Night Ah MGS Online :) That was so much fun back in the day. By the way cool Yubel.
am I the only person missing the gbc title? because it was honestly amazing gameplay-wise despite the silly story
It's non canon, well the 2 NES games are as well.
In that case, I'm glad Johnny played one with it intact
The keycard system is somewhat improved in MG2SS. For every three cards you collect, you can swap them for a "master card" in building one that does the work of all three. Once you've collected all 9 cards and swapped them for the 3 masters, you can swap them for a card that does the work of card 1-9.
This plot may be really simple by today's standards, but for 1987 it's impressive that the game actually had a story, much less a plot twist.
A long review! And about one of my favorite video game series! This is gonna be a great marathon.
And people say the plot of kingdom hearts is confusing.
+BlueSilver at least there are people who can actually explain metal gear. Not even square enix understands what the fuck is up with kingdom hearts plot
joakkar I can explain kingdom hearts, and so can alot of other people.
no, you can't.
John I'm so proud of you dude! The quality of this video compared to the oldies, you've came a long way friend. and I feel old..
As soon as I get up there's a new video?! That's awesome
johnny i need you to know that this was the series that got me into the metal gear games in 7th grade. i remember people weren't happy that you did EVERY GAME but i wouldn't have it any other way.
One of my favorite video game franchises ever made. Sad to know that we'll probably never get another installment though...
#FucKonami
It's a shame really.
Ben Link It really is.
RIP Metal Gear, RIP Castlevania, RIP every other Konami franchise.
Maciek Skywalker And they'll all be shitty mobile games.
+Maciek Skywalker I can't wait for the next gamr :[)
+Omar Elmosrati
The Metal Gear franchise needed to be put down a long time ago.
So far so good. I dont even care how long these take to make but TAKE YOUR TIME w this series! Absorb and re absorb all of the convolutedness we've come to love
9:28
Yep, that's a helicopter if I ever saw one.
Was That Sarcasm?😑
@@diannejohn5346
Yes.
@@SolidMike84 that was a mistake and you know it!
@@diannejohn5346
Sure it was.
Doesn't change the fact that it wasn't a helicopter.
@@SolidMike84 then shut up.
Another thing worth mentioning is MG2's pricetag which is almost as high as Shantae's for the GBC so if you wanna play MSX2 style be prepared to pay a small fortune for it...assuming you can find it in the first place.:)
Brilliant Video John and worth the wait.
Johnny, you NEED to review these games inside a cardboard box, to get the true spirit of the MGS series.
I've lost track how many times I've watched this video. I think this is my favourite review of yours period. I can't put my finger on why but... it's so soothing.
this review is over a year old, my god where has the time gone?
This is not only one of you best reviews, but it is one of the BEST reviews I've ever seen. Good Job Johnny
The moment I saw this in my notifications I clicked without hesitation
+bigdjman45 Ear Rape is when a very long and loud noise plays unexpectedly.
Don't try to hesitate, let it flow baby. Click that thumbnail.
+Dillon the Hedgehog and “DJ Ear Rape” Stream the Fox um. congrats?
lol
Man!!!!!! I totally missed this Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake. I mean I'm 35 years old and I grew up on metal gear on the NES, and all through the PS2/GC and other consoles. But I never knew of this one my GOODNESS.
Speaking of Dr. Madnar, it would be interesting if you ended this marathon with a review of SNATCHER.
Oh boy, this marathon is going to be great ! Glad i voted
Wait...two guys named Johnny and Mark...sounds familiar...
Oh hai Mark!
Glad your back Johnny. Can't wait for Metal Gear Solid!
So happy people voted these games over Earthbound.
You....
Subjective is subjective.
HOW DARE YOU!!!!
+youthnando91 not surprising. EB is not nearly as popular as MG despite its critical acclaim.
+youthando91
And if they didn't? Would it matter either way?
Now THAT's research. And it's noce to see you directly played every version of every game.
MSX was not a PC Brand. It was a computer standard.Kind of like the IBM PC standard and Tandy standard. Think of it as MAC vs PC.
you kept me waiting John and the video was TOTALLY..
WORTH IT
I wanted Starfox... :C
Oh well. At least someone is finally talking about the OG Metal Gear.
First NES game I ever played.
Too bad that version is not considered part of the story x)
I'm talking about the NES version of Metal Gear. :/ The MSX version is the one that is part of the Metal Gear storyline.
He will get to the StarFox games until he gets the Metal Gear & the Earthbound games out of the way first.
Besides those two were the most requested.
UtherSwagBringer Big Boss never told Snake he was his father, thats MGS1 retconing the final battle of MG2.
Great to see the start of the marathon, i was getting really anxious
kingdom hearts marathon next please
I second this
The story will be.... interesting
Ooh! Yes! Pls do it Johnny!
the story if a fucking mess
***** I agree 100%. That's why I think it's perfect for Johnny:) just look at how the Metal Gear series went!
You took on quite a project Johnny but i am certain you can do it ( also very excited!).
Are you also going to review Raiden's game? Metal Gear Solid Rising Revengence... Or no?
+SonicMaster211 I remember hearing him say in an earthbound stream that he will cover it
+AJ Camacho (Hero of the Multiverse) There is no "Solid" in the title for these game either man...
+AJ Camacho (Hero of the Multiverse) its a metal gear marathon
not a metal gear solid marathon
+Jerec 12 Doesn't matter he said he may review AcId and that's not canon either. Is there's enough space for it then I assume he will but for the moment I'd say he's more like going to take the main titles ya know?
+Adam Anouer Rising is canon.
And the soundtrack to Metal Gear 2 is probably the best in the series. So varied and atmospheric.
Ugh I did all this too... Metal gear 1 .... Was maddening
+pyrolee17 Yeah it took me a while to figure out that BS with the egg too.
friggin snakes ate my damn rations!
It really grinds your gears now, right?
Oho man this marathon's gonna be fun! Great to see you doing reviews again Johnny!
Hmm, a password called "Fuck me" huh? Well, and I thought your Wii U letting you watch porn was Nintendo's big screw up in trying to make themselves "family friendly." By the way, I'm not kidding, you can actually watch porn on your Wii U.
+PyroFinnTheManiac And 3DS.
Why do you think everyone bought the console?
+PyroFinnTheManiac HOW?
you can with all consoles that have a browser
+557deadpool But we all bought the console to watch porn with that Nintendo "charm" :^)
Dude, just found your channel. You legit have one of the best gaming channels on youtube. Really appreciate your work brotha!!
Nothing extraordinary.. yet.
BladeBlur Oh hi. Didn’t know you were a fan of Johnny. Love your videos btw
Nice timing there dude, uploaded this exactly when I woke up. Great video man, as always.
It's actually known that the Big Boss that Snake took out in the original Metal Gear is Venom Snake, Big Boss' phantom from Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Interesting, right?
@Ultimate Hedgehog yes it is
TempestMask1000 Pretty obvious and intuitive so
You are hands down my favorite game reviewer. Props to you man keep it up!
Johnny, will this marathon only include the mainline stuff (MGS2, Snake Eater, Guns of the Patriots, Portable Ops, Peace Walker, Ground Zeroes, and Phantom Pain?
+Dennis Claros He said he was going to do Rising: Revengence
+Dennis Claros He said he was going to do Rising: Revengence
Sion Barzahd Nice.
+Dennis Claros He played Snakes Revenge, so...
tltar253 Oh yeah..
I've always wanted to see a 16-bit Metal Gear game. . . maybe that will be the next big kick starter project. . .?
Snake ...is almost as old as Mr. Game n Watch...Smash Ultimate Snake!!
Johnny a couple things I want to add with MG2
!. They technically fixed the card swapping issue in away, you can find colored security cards that combine 3 cards into 1 like the red master card being cards 1-3 combined together, the blue master card being cards 4-6, and so on. Granted you still have to swap between different cards to open unmarked doors but I think its better to swap between 3 cards to open a door as opposed to swapping between 9 cards
Kojima, show them how it's done."
so in the 1st game venom snake dies?
ChaosN yeah
I figured he was killed of in Metal Gear 2, since that is the game where you see "Big Boss" get incinerated. And yet he is completely okay in Metal Gear Solid 4, and we were given not a single explanation.
BobTheArchmage Venom was killed in MG1. In MG2 snake severely burned BB and the patriots took BBs body and used parts from Liquid & Solidus and kept him in a deep sleep.
i have never player a metal gear game but...
jesus christ, that's a new level of fucked up stuff (the good one)
1:05 It was also popular in Europe, South-America, the Middle-East, the Arabic world and the former USSR. I really enjoyed this video by the way, really thorough and nicely made.
20:02 Didn't realise i was living life like that. I certainly don't remember much from this video back when i watched it when it was new.
The “missing our Grey Fox” fuckin killed me cause I knew exactly where that came from lmao
My first MG was the two NES ports. Metal gear and Snakes Revenge. Still have them!
I might have to give these games a try someday (or at least the last one that was covered in this video). Really glad to see Mark in the video, btw~
Loved the video, and that 2D swaying part was adorable
Really want to play Metal Gear now. Looks like a great series!!!
5:42 I need to "procure" these games.
I can not wait to see your marathon of all 3 franchises your planning and i definitely can not wait till your next review. Keep kicking ass and Playin' Games Johnny :D
I love this, Johnny ^-^ Glad I got back to watching you .
Finally! I was procuring this video to rewatch it :D
Man, now this is a great way to begin the Metal Geat Marathon, and it is going to get better!!! :D
lol the whole big boss plot became a lot more convoluted 27 years later. Loved this review though :) really fantastic insight into the original series and can't wait for the Solid series reviews :)
Great review John! I've never played the Metal Gear games, but I'll probably give them a chance after watching your reviews. This will be a fun marathon! :D
I really like what you've done to your room.
Metal Gear Marathon! It can't be!
I'm looking forward to it. :)
Oh my god the final boss room code. I remember hearing about that and thinking it was just a rumor. Holy crap.
