This song/video has a vibe that Im in love with: the 90's aesthetics, the garage simple but powerful and raw sound, and also a mix of a wide variety of feelings like hope, misery, innocence and nostalgia...
I've been on a huge GBV binge during all this, they seem to be the only band right now I really have the motivation to listen to. These videos and films are much appreciated. Thanks as always Matador
The squeaky cart wheels beginning and ending the song... pure perfection. And the whole video, masterpiece really, with such a rough and reserved selection of actions and views, yet so powerful in the transmission of expression (*if moving at all=kicking high like an exclamation mark... Etc) I've listened to other GBV songs but this one really got a hold on me for years
the most revolutionary band i've ever come across so far, both sonically and even aesthically. this isnt the version that plays on my cd of alien lanes but it's awesome
I'm over 30 years into alternative music but only now I understood the genius of this band. Perhaps due to covid. I was tired of hearing all the old stuff I was listening to, couldn't find good new stuff and so I have GBV another try. And something triggered. It took time, but I'm so glad I made it. My first GBV record is coming in next week.
Kinda same dude, I'm 40 and have always been aware of GBV but I binged watched a TV show that had Game of Pricks as an outtro and a lightbulb went off. They're the indie/lo-fi Talking Heads. Just so many great songs.
Nice, been into guided by voices since about 2010, and I just now am realizing they have a knife song! I love collecting blades, got several $400 knives.
i think they're both good for different reasons. the mix and overall poppier style on this one is really cool but the alien lanes version feels more personal
What happened to the Bulldog Skin vid? Cant' find it! On another note at 1:24, when Bob walks past the adult entertainment center and into the religious objects shop with his wheelbarrow...tres bien!
I bought Alien Lanes on a whim and got just obsessed with that album and band. This version is good, but I still prefer the original for nostalgia's sake, I guess.
I do really love GBV..... not all of it; however I enjoy his project Circus Devils 100,000 times more. If you haven’t heard it and like Pollard; go now and listen please.
On Canada day a crackhead tried to jump me and my friend, luckily I had my trusted hunting knife of 5 years on me. This song will forever remind me of my right hand man being in my hip that night ❤️
@@vilentman111 No way Jose. Song sounds stiff and loses its groove in this version. Vocals are warmer, and the song flows better on the sripped down album version. Sounds like two different songs almost. This video is also totally cringe and embarassing.
I think it’s fair to say GBV were the seed to the early 00’s global rock fashion and sound. Largely due to Strokes and others who were influenced by them. I mean, how many kids sported white converse mid 90’s?
How would you describe this genius band? An early 60s purist folk-rock John Lennon joinns The Yardbirds and The Grateful Dead then teleports into Sonic Youth (before the Geffen sell-out) and back again at 1000 mph?
@@domdom9496 lol, I've known about all of those bands since my early/mid teens and before. You asked in plenum, I'm just saying that no, I would not describe them like that. No need to get aggro.
I prefer the LP version, too. I think this was the official single release because Matador felt the drum track (very obviously a simple drum machine) wasn't up to snuff; at least I recall reading that somewhere. So I guess they did a remix and came up with this.
@@videosdoyoutube5199 no way, original version flows and has a groove to it. This sounds stiff and the video is cringe. Orignial is lo fi but has a nice warm sound to it. I dont know what you're talking about.
@@videosdoyoutube5199 The drums are canned and repetitive on the original, but otherwise, it has a better groove and better mix, I think. But this shit is all subjective. It's a GREAT song, anyway, regardless of production and arrangement.
i'm glad someone finally figured out how to write a song.
It will take 3 months, 1 week, and 4 days to listen to all Guided By Voices material and related projects back to back...
what the
Good artists make songs about love and betrayal, great artists make songs about knives and objects.
Buildings and food.
i don't know ya...but i love ya!
PS It's mostly about the same subjects, but put more creatively.
you get Gold Star for Robot Boy for that one! ⭐
Guided by Voices is not a band. It is 4 bands....or more

Thats a great way to put the feeling into words of what a lot of gbv makes you feel
I love that vibe
What other albums have this feel?
@@iamhereblossom1588 listen to Moonflower Plastic by Tobin Sprout (2017), is this same vibe, I especially recommend the song “All used up”
I’m starting to believe this is one of the greatest songs of all time.
It's amazing
It's very good...one of Pollard's 20 best I'd reckon. And there's a lot of material to sift through, just within the GBV albums and eps, mind you.
We don't really know what others go through. We all wish for our knife to be sharper.

This great music never gets old.

Just started getting into GBV. This is a great song. I like this poppier version and the one on Alien Lanes
You saw IT Crowd also..?
Funny you should say that. I was just thinking that the Alien Lanes version is way better than this.

Same.

Why is this better than the album version?
Because that is how GBV rolled ...
Because they don’t like lip syncing 💕
It's not, album version is way better. This is kind of cringe.

Bob in earlier years looks like Wayne Coyne.
