I think one of the interesting and energizing things about this song is that it begins by bursting into the chorus at full steam ahead without pittering around something else first.
Daniel Cropp I’m not, I actually am not a very good writer, ha. But I occasionally can identify why a song evokes something for me. Glad it resonated with some others.
Yet another song I missed in the early 00's. Not sure how I missed so many good songs. I heard this on WEHM 92.9 in Long Island and had to pull the car over to Shazam it. Funny thing is I've heard a song or two from Guided By Voices (one of the best group names ever.)
its a scary thought, but it's also kind of wonderful. a butterfly flaps its wings and it starts to rain. all these little parts of the machine constantly working, making sure you end up exactly where youre supposed to be there. the right place, at the right time.
I was married to someone I thought was the love of my life, and she left me within weeks of finding out I have cancer. Sometimes being at the right place isn't the thing you want.
Hey, glad girls only want to get you high And they're alright There will be no coronation There will be no flowers flowing In the light that passes though me Hey, glad girls only want to get you high And they're alright There will be no graduation There will be no trumpets blowing In the light that passes through me With the sinking of the sun I've come to greet you Clean your hands and go to sleep Confess the dreams Of good and bad men all around Some are lost And some have found The light that passes though me
I had sort of the opposite reaction to others in the comments. I'm a huge GBV fan and was incredibly and pleasantly surprised to hear this song on How I Met Your Mother. It's a fantastic song and I'm glad it's been exposed to the rest of the world.
GBV and Robert Pollard brought me here...forget TV show that brought you here..listen to his entire catalog, the man is a pure rock god and best writer
This song is a timeless 3 1/2 minute rock opera & the finest kaleidoscope. Blow me away, never saw the video until this morning, what a work of art just like the music, the vocals & the lyrics ! 🍻🌟🍻👍🍻🌈🍻💖🍻🔥🍻💣🍻🎉🍻💥🍻✨
Some bands are just too good to achieve mainstream success. There's just no way that the general public can get their heads around something so brilliant as GBV.
ThinLynottFan It took my girlfriend a few tries to get into them. The have a gigantic pool of material to sort through but yeah, not everyone's cup of tea.
saw them on this tour at The Crystal Ballroom in Portland, Oregon . The dancefloor is on springs. I got Five Feet of Air during the show. There was literally 3 feet deep snow drifts of plastic beer cups at the end of the night.
the greatest moments in your life wont necessarily be the things you do, theyll also be the things that happen to you. now im not saying you can't take action to affect the outcome of your life, you have to take action, and you will. but never forget that on any day you can step out the front door and your whole life can change forever. you see, the universe has a plan kids, and that plan is always in motion.
All these little parts of the machine... constantly working making sure that you end up exactly where you're supposed be, exactly when you're supposed be there. The right place at right time
How I Met Your Mother Season 4 Episode 22 "Right Place,Right Time" Don't forget kids, things that you think little and tiny can cause big results. Thanks HIMYM :)
It was so funny discovering GBV like 10 years ago and being like "they wrote THIS too?". This and Hold On Hope are like when I found out Everybody Hurts is an REM song, the '90s were a deeply weird time for music.
I've been thinking about a story for these lyrics for like a year now. The best thing I've come up with is the person who is the focus of this song is a serial killer, we're hearing his internal monologue and his narrating to the girl he's murdering all the things she's going to miss out on, and his reasoning why. "Clean your hands and go to sleep confess the dreams of good and bad men..." sounds like part of his ritual. This says more about me than the lyrics. I probably watched too much Dexter.
I always thought this song was a tribute to The Who (I understand, Cheap Trick as well). Hear the Pete Townsend influence? And the background vocals in the bridge, "Whoo ooh ooh"!
Like everybody, good music taste got me here. I heard it on How I Met Your Mother, but to pursue it is a result of good music taste. So stfu with the "I came here from good taste not a Tv show", because it doesn't matter where we heard it. It matters if we LIKE it! It doesn't matter how we get introduced to something great, it just matters that it happened.
Never seen How I Met Your Mother, but I love Guided By Voices/Boston Spaceships. For what it's worth, I mostly got into them because of The IT Crowd, so yeah, one form of media can lead you to another. I don't really care, but I think what some people are upset about is all the posting of that show's name when we are on the video for an amazing song. I think the sentiment is that the focus should be the music, which is beautiful.
I think one of the interesting and energizing things about this song is that it begins by bursting into the chorus at full steam ahead without pittering around something else first.
very true. nice observation. are you a songwriter yourself? i've been writing for about a year and a half.
"Don't bore us, get to the chorus"
Thats great songwriting. A trick The Beatles used quite frequently.

GBV are great at making insanely catchy and seemingly-upbeat songs that have a cryptic undercurrent of melancholy or darkness.
Whoever was in charge of picking music for How I Met Your Mother, did an amazing job.
Right place, right time
MechanoMan The music style looks a bit like Nada Surf
I just watched the episode with this song and I was almost convinced this song was called 'Black girls'.
i thought it was 'clad girls' im not even sure if its word xD
ItsMikka GBV & Nada Surf share a band member in Doug Gilliard. 🤷🏻♀️

man, they manage to pack 5 or 6 distinct musical parts into this song, in under 3:30, and still leave you with the chorus stuck in your head. amazing.
Bob Pollard is an unearthly songwriting cyborg. No one else like him, especially in our shared hometown of Dayton, OH.
its a scary thought, but it's also kind of wonderful. a butterfly flaps its wings and it starts to rain. all these little parts of the machine constantly working, making sure you end up exactly where youre supposed to be there. the right place, at the right time.

When Pollard gets it right, he really gets it right.
He rarely gets it wrong
Perfect Power Pop! Shudda binna hit. Everybody aged 5 to 105 would surely love this. Hook after hook after hook. My hat is off.
Hey, glad girls only want to get you high
And they're alright
There will be no coronation
There will be no flowers flowing
In the light that passes though me
Hey, glad girls only want to get you high
And they're alright
There will be no graduation
There will be no trumpets blowing
In the light that passes through me
With the sinking of the sun
I've come to greet you
Clean your hands and go to sleep
Confess the dreams
Of good and bad men all around
Some are lost
And some have found
The light that passes though me
Greatest song ever
Song does not get old.
When i'm angry, when i'm sad, when i'm happy, when i'm depressed I put on Guided By Voices and turn that shit all the way up.
Yes.
I had sort of the opposite reaction to others in the comments. I'm a huge GBV fan and was incredibly and pleasantly surprised to hear this song on How I Met Your Mother. It's a fantastic song and I'm glad it's been exposed to the rest of the world.

Entire catalog of GBV? Only if you are young enough:)

One of the greatest music vids ever.
There was no graduation for the class of 2020. I miss cruising on the highway to this song back then, the good times just had to roll.

Some bands are just too good to achieve mainstream success. There's just no way that the general public can get their heads around something so brilliant as GBV.
I heard of them through a Julian Casablancas interview. They're a bit meh IMO
ThinLynottFan It took my girlfriend a few tries to get into them. The have a gigantic pool of material to sort through but yeah, not everyone's cup of tea.
ThinLynottFan I dig your screen name! I love Thin Lizzy!
Billingsley, Barbara. That's who you're thinking of. And that dolphin guy, right? Batman.
FUCKIN NORMIES
saw them on this tour at The Crystal Ballroom in Portland, Oregon . The dancefloor is on springs. I got Five Feet of Air during the show. There was literally 3 feet deep snow drifts of plastic beer cups at the end of the night.
super late to the bandwagon. i'm so glad i have friends who have great taste in music
There will be no coronation
There will be no flowers flowing in the light
Why is that the best part of any song ever?
This is something around R.E.M.
Awesome song
Their show in Philly, 2002 still gives me chills

Right place, Right time. 2020 has been pretty tough, HIMYM has helped me keep myself sane.
I know bro.
All these little parts of the machine... constantly working making sure that you end up exactly where you're supposed be, exactly when you're supposed be there. The right place at right time

I've been a fan since I was young, but when I heard them on HIMYM I was jumping up and down. Hopefully it will make them gain new fans.
Just did
I had this on a mixtape at work once and one of my co-workers thought Pollard was singing "hey, hey, black girls!" That's right, a mixtape.
this is one of the best things mankind has achieved
Yes, he used to be a school teacher in Dayton, so probably was.
Super talented.
This - is super song! Good music.
It was so funny discovering GBV like 10 years ago and being like "they wrote THIS too?". This and Hold On Hope are like when I found out Everybody Hurts is an REM song, the '90s were a deeply weird time for music.

I always thought this song was a tribute to The Who (I understand, Cheap Trick as well). Hear the Pete Townsend influence? And the background vocals in the bridge, "Whoo ooh ooh"!
Any money GBV make.. they 100% deserve it.
Both Scrubs AND HIMYM used Guided by Voices's songs, my 2 favorite series ^^
recently got to meet the drummer also a founding member of the band.
🎤Nothin Suits Me Like A Suit!🎼
Great happy tune.
one of the great unknown pophits of Indierock
Classic!
I'm pretty sure Nada Surf got some inspiration for their sound from GBV! This song is amazing.
