There best stuff was back in the 80s. They got noticed outside Ohio with the beginning of the Alternative Rock movement in the 90s, but not much more than a couple songs on MTV and some tours with a few big names. They are really pretty good. Consistently bad as they say.
I found this song and band because of The Strokes music video for Someday. I saw Slash in the video and searched google to see if it was actually him. It said Slash and Guided by Voices were in the video. So I looked them up and found this song. It has been on repeat ever since. I sing it all the time while walking around. I’m a 37 year old that has listened to tons of music and just heard of these guys in 2024. 😢
Both bands are really fantastic! Check out "man called aerodynamic"... Galvanic hard rock guitar wall of multiple guitar layers with Pollard singing on top, almost like he's surfing this wave of guitars. And a great post-modern solo at the end just rips it all apart. Whoo!
Everyone here is my brother or sister. Few voices, poets, painters, artists, lovers, places, substances have touched us in that deep place like this song.. like GBV. All those moments , I had them too and we share this song and their whole effin epic catalogue . Cheers to you!
How cool is this band man,,,seriously it’s the first time I’ve heard them and instantly I am a fan. Why?,,grown up during 90s grunge and many alternative groups and it just has that sound of the 90s clever little riffs and hooks with great lyrics thrown in. Fantastic anyone with taste and brains will love this band.
Look, WE all know that Robert Pollard is a musical genius. 20, 30 years from now, true music fans and scholars will finally catch up, and tell their friends, "Have you ever heard of a band called Guided By Voices?" GBV deserves their place in Rock & Roll History and their legacy is hopefully insured!
I was reading about the cutup style of making writing and how it relates to modern wizadry ( jack kerouack and will burroughs styles ... ) how they made recordings and chopped them up because they believed it was the only way to break out of the linear recording of history within time-space. And then I remembered there was a wizard motif on the album cover....

Loved them since Alien Lanes And, Matador, yeaaahh.. many great bands arrived through you guys over there (I can easily name almost a dozen of my favs, from your great label, mostly 1990's)
Bob has probably done pretty well for himself. He doesn't seem to have an ego. Just give him some beer, cigarettes, a guitar and a 4 track. Pretty simple way to live. Admirable.
Why? They put out the records they wanted to make. Still do. How was not being Mickey Mouse on MTV and Top 40 radio going to make them any more interesting? GBV did just fine. I'm convinced most people born after 1975 drank the Kool Aid of the masses. AM radio not FM. UHF not VHF. Stop thinking everything belongs on Cable Television. That's called conditioning. The term "alternative" existed for a reason.
Taking “our band could be your life” to new levels. I always wanted to write a book based on incredible lyrics with correspondence with the artists talking about the songs that most inspired them to start writing.
anyone know where I can find the mix from the video with the distorted guitar coming in for the chorus? can't find that version on any streaming service except for this video

This band is criminally underground
it's crazy, they have a huge discography full of interesting songs, but you have to do the digging if you want to hear it

do you hear the demons' buzzing too? I was advised to follow their voices and it made me remember this band
Still sounds great. One of the greatest albums of the 1990s.
One of those guitar riffs that sounds like it’s always existed
The Strokes brought me here.
that what i was thinking lol
Reminds me of warning from Green Day a little bit. But Warning sounds a lot like an older rock song too
Yes, I've been listening to GBV for 30 years and I always feel I've heard these songs before. That's the brilliance of Pollard' art.
@@lot2196 perfect melding of influences without blatantly ripping anyone off... takes a delicate touch.

I just noticed there's an extra distorted guitar when the chorus kicks in that is not on the album version.
I can't tell which version I like more
The single thing I'd change about bee thousand is the inclusion of this version over the album version.
From the moment I saw this on 120minutes I was hooked. I'd never heard anything like them and never have. Best Band Ever!
This song is tattooed on my heart
This version is definitely better than the album version…although I love that one as well. They remembered to mash the overdrive button on this one.

One of the best American bands ever!
Greatest song ever written by the greatest band in the world. ❤
I love this band, simple songs and vibing

I had no idea how good GBV was at basketball. Solid 3 pointer right there.
Bob's got a soothing voice.
it's so textured and airy and full while being some of the least mixed music ive ever heard. lo-fi is an art.
One of my favorite music videos, closest feeling to time travel

Cradle of Filth and Guided by Voices, two great recommendations from a great show.

A band that should have been way bigger
could have gotten bigger. but they made production choices that kept them underground. and i think that was just fine with them.
