I took Mounjaro starting Oct 29 weekly until mid January and started alternating weeks until stopping Mounjaro completely April 14th. I did resistance training (LIIFT4 & LIIFT More), walked 1.8-3.35 miles most days, kept protein at 110-135 grams grams.m. I did much of this to prevent lean mass loss and since the start I have lost 84 pounds. The changes in habits I made continue as over the past month I have lost 13.6 without Mounjaro. These shots can be great to break habits, but don’t waste the time you have it, use it as a help for you to change your habits and wean off for a lifelong healthy you.
@davidbrown8240 there is a lot of mixed messaging out there on the topic. Some places say it improves HRV, check out nao medical’s article on the subject. Also, how much of the HRV is connected to type 2 diabetes? Regarding weight loss, those with diabetes don’t seem to be losing weight as quickly as those taking the medics merely for weight loss. Those with rapid weight loss are often those without type 2 diabetes.
I am a firm believer in focusing on fitness and the steps to maintaining lean body mass being as the keys to healthy weight loss. Crash diets/starvation diets of any type carry a lot of risk. Weight loss from a 400/500 calorie deficit and 400/500 calories from exercise are very effective and help avoid risk such as you describe. Lean body mass and prevention of it were a focal part when I went on a journey to put my fitness back at the forefront of my life journey, therefore a greater than 50% portion of my calorie deficit came from my exercise.
@davidbrown8240 What is HRV? Had the Sleeve 3.5 years ago.
Blood sugar reduction is much better than insulin.
@@williamroberts6327 I think mybe heart rate variability? idk but obviously eating less costs nothing. That's why we need surgeries and pills and injections, god forbid we should FeEl UnComFortable for a few weeks while we do it without a drug crutch that's going to eff up our health. It's ok, we're entitled to someone else taking care of us when our health fails because of our selfish choices! And anyone \who disagrees is a bigot.
I am planning to use it.. I hit plateau after loosing 7kgs only in 6 months (110 kgs to 103).. I am just scared about gaining double the weight I loose after the effects of the drug is over...any advice would be really helpful and appreciated.. thank you
I’ve been doing Mounjaro 5mg for a month and a half. I started lifting weights 3 weeks before starting Mounjaro. I’m gaining muscle and have also started walking 3 miles at least 3 days a week. I’ve lost 35 lbs since I started the shot and I’m not losing muscle.

@@avinashsharma9357 The best thing anyone can do is get their diet under control. Even sneaking a piece of candy here and there can add up quickly when you realize it can be 100 calories in one piece and you snuck in 6 pieces in a day. I track my calories, walk daily and strength train. You can’t keep doing the same things that got you overweight and expect to be different. It’s a lifestyle change
Eat protein and lift weights. Muscle loss will be minimal.
Mitochondria power house 👍..always good information Dr Mike
Good info. Thanks. I was worried about losing muscle mass. I am already doing the 3 recommendations you mentioned. So I hope I will be ok.
Thank you for sharing!Have an awesome day❤You will probably surrounding by patients-Stay well always!!
Best looking doctor ever.
Great video, lots of inaccuracies on the internet.
Yeah. Not true. I do resistance training and make sure I get enough protein and I'm gaining muscle and losing fat.
Doctor/Body builder. wow.
So happy. I am entering week 24 and the results have been amazing. On 5mg of Mounjaro and there are doctors out there saying the muscle loss is deadly.

My doctor prescribed me Mounjaro for weight loss back in July of last year before it became this popular for what it is. I’d never taken anything for weight loss before so when my weight got bad enough that my dr recommended it I made sure to fix my eating and kept working out. Granted I did notice I was able to bench less when I started losing weight but i eventually got back to benching what I used to all while still losing. In total I lost 60lbs and I’m finally able to see definition in my arms and chest. My only recommendation is to drink a lot of water and make sure you keep up with protein intake that definitely helped me. I’m currently on my last injection and I’m a bit nervous because everything I hear about Mounjaro is that as soon as you stop it you gain the weight back but I’m hoping that the habits I’ve been able to gain while on it help me maintain.
if you stay on the same meal plan . don't worry about gaining weight . don't be weak minded and give into cravings
Low carb , high protein, near 0 added sugar . you'll be fine .
Hey, how are you doing since ur last injection?
@@memebzk5001 I ganined around 13 pounds the month right after because the food noise came back with a vengeance and I also stopped going to the gym around that time due to having some family issues but when I realized I was sabotaging myself I got myself back in the gym and started trying to drown out the food noise on my own. Once I started working out again I quickly went back down to where I was before stopping. And although I’ve still had muscle growth my weight has stayed the same from when I stopped.
So, did you gain the weight back?
Really good information
In 2016 I lost over 100 lbs getting down to 188 doing a whole foods ketogenic diet with intermittent fasting. I kept it off for years but made the mistake of going back to eating sugar again and regained 2/3 of it.
This time, I did all the same things but also took semaglutide for 4 and 1/2 months. When I got down to the same 188 lbs losing 65 lbs I was at 21% body fat instead of the 19 I had been at previously at that same weight so I definitely lost a disproportionate amount of lean mass to body fat this time. Also, I can physically see a difference in the mirror at this weight versus doing it without the semaglutide. I physically looked leaner at this way doing it without the semaglutide.
That being said, it was definitely much easier to stick to the plan that I made for myself using it so I don't regret it. It is now time to hit the gym and start lifting weights.
How do you get this medication??
Not true! Just got my six month dexa scan and I actually gained muscle!
Your are so awesome Dr. Mike. And we miss you when you take breaks. Our GOOD Dr. Mike!! ☺️🙏🏼
Im on mounjaro its hard for me to exercise because of cervical and lumbar fusions and damage still left what can I do to help
Most people don’t trqck macros so they are likely to be screwing it up or eating way too little
The thumbnail pic for this vid....😆😘
it's not hard to lose more fat than muscle when you're losing weight (note, I'm not saying that unassisted weight loss itself isn't hard). the problem is, if you don't keep that fat off, then you've done yourself a disservice, because now you've regained the fat and have proportionally less lean mass than you had to start with.
I have been on ozempic since 5/16/23. I saw about 5-6lbs of lean muscle mass, but ive lost 18lbs of body fat loss by october 2023.
Very helpful information. Thank you, Dr. I read Mounjaro uses artificial hormones. How safe do you surmise Mounjaro is? I worry about cancer since artificial hormones cause breast cancer.
Great ! the adipokinin mechanism was NewZ to me... i don't like to debate` science but the studies you bring up may or may not be statistically significant. so many factor in muscle growth that have nothing directly to do with diabetes or the deeper iisues in metabolic syndrome...
for me i notice the side effects when eating incorrectly ie ,, negative reinforcement
Please talk about monjourno and fasting for 4 days!!! Please look into this for me. Because fasting is hard but on these drugs it’s super easy. I can go not eat for days but I’m afraid to do it because of getting the protein to not lose muscle mass.
feel like we should wait another 5-10 years to mass perscribe these until we are very sure they dont cause pancreatic canc. thats the worst way to die imo
Agreed! For some, the risk of not getting the weight off is worse than the drug. Early death and pancreatic cancer can most certainly happen in those overweight. But, I’m with you. Let’s see this play out. Been listening to doctors on how to do this naturally. Best wishes
@@Godblessed2the joke is, we had oral GLP-1 drugs for the last 20-30 years, and they still use them overseas more than anything else. the drug acarbose has well documented glp-1 activity and has demonstrated a mortality benefit over metformin. it is still a mystery to me why us docs know nothing about this drug... other than it apparently causes flatus which is not a really good reason not to use it lol
Can you skip weeks? For instance… can you not take it during a hectic month? Or do you have to take it every week?
no because it wears off
Dr Hansen, have you ever done a video on SARMS or maybe willing to do one? Harm reduction and all? Idk if UA-cam allows it. We keep talking about the weight loss products that started as meds for other reasons, maybe SARMs and peptides? Most web pages just say the same stuff and I'm wondering what the docs think of it all.
Problem is regaining 11 pounds of muscle mass is infinitely harder than regaining 33 pounds of fat
100% Spot on, 180 # loser here. Gotta preserve at least, or build muscle during meaningful weight loss . 👍
Thank you for the thumbnail!!! 👍
11 pounds of lean body mass lost! You say that like that’s freaking nothing. The only people that you are convincing that this is “nothing are people that don’t monitor their body fat and lean muscle mass and realize how much muscle that would be to lose.
I used to like Dr Mike more. He’s really gotten behind these novel drugs as a seemingly miracle drug we’ve all been waiting for. I’m not dismissing it’s benefits but it’s too novel to know the real long term implications as with most “too good to be truths” go, there’s usually a trade off we didn’t foresee.
Just like the covid vaccine...
No doubt the part he skipped is that the study included diet and lifestyle changes. In the real world this is assuming that busy doctors under incredible time constraints are giving patients careful guidance... and that patients will actually make these changes. More likely, "I only ate one Quarter Pounder instead of my usual three, and only half the fries."
Medical studies bury unfavorable results and most studies are set up for specific results. Why use a pharma product (many of which have been recalled for dangerous ingredients) when the body is self healing. Just use discipline!
@@soofriendsIf you take tirzepatide you would find it difficult to eat half a quarter pounder more less 3.
@soofriends you're also acting like eating one burger over 3 is somehow worse, all I've heard Mike here say was the importance of diet&exercise with the shot. If someone "takes the easy way out" we should not shame them if the result were still positive.
These vs sarms?
Can I do a 4 day fast when I start monjourno? Because I’m not hungry so I want to take advantage of this to build Keyon’s
the idea that a drug that causes sarcopenia will make you live longer is just absurd off the bat.
You really can’t wrap your head around the idea being morbidly obese and many of its common comorbidities including: diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, sedentary behavior, high cholesterol, depression etc, is maybe… just maybe going to give a person a higher mortality rate than losing some mild lean muscle bulk?
Guess chemo is out the door too cuz that causes a whole lot more muscle loss.
I'm sorry it's me again. I just like to let you know doc I do not take sugar meds anymore or high blood pressure or cholesterol pills. So my insurance is gladly paying for 100% of this medication high blood pressure medicine was very high and taking this stuff for the rest of my life I am so glad that I might be losing some muscle cuz I can build that up. I don't have to worry about all this medicine to take because I'm fat but I'm not fat I've lost weight. Losing weight in Florida so I will be living little bit longer
The problem is those being prescribed this have an absolutely terrible understanding of dieting and what it takes to build and preserve muscle mass. If these prescriptions were used in conjunction with a Protein Sparing Modified Fast there is no way they would have lost that muscle mass
It's crucial that patients get a body composition scan BEFORE they go on these drugs. Then they can see how much LMM they lose and where they lose it. One study found that the loss of LMM was almost as much as the loss of fat.
According to my scale, I've lost 35# and gained 14# of muscle mass. I am working out 5 days a week and taking Semiglutide.
That’s the best way to go keep up the good work
That is a ton of muscle.
How has your energy been in workouts? Do you do much cardio? If so, how has that been?
I have muscle wasting now. But I'm 60 so.....
I had to stop that drug I lost all my strength my appetite and has caused mental health issues
So this drug destroys more fat than it does muscle so does this drug also know the different between the heart muscle and a leg muscles I don't think SOOO
Muscle has fat in it and water and blood?
If you don’t change your crappy diet, eat sufficient protein, do cardio and weight bearing exercise sure you will lose muscle along with the fat. Not rocket science if you do it right it works brilliantly. I’ve dropped 11kgs in 7 weeks on monjorno with a good diet and appropriate exercise.
So the answer is yes you do lose muscle mass. Like you said you can counter that by resistance training, proper sleep and eating protein rich meals. However they don’t do these things and that is the problem. They can’t eat because appetite is suppressed. They don’t sleep well because nor do they exercise because energy levels are low. Not to mention how common the GI adverse events are. I saw my wife’s muscles melt before my very eyes. Insulin generally favors muscle gain so naturally when you are eating high glycemic meals your insulin levels remain elevated so you won’t have muscle loss. Yes, when you stop eating these foods and lose weight you will lose both fat and muscle but losing weight naturally is still better because these is way less muscle loss. It is sustainable, no GI symptoms and no appetite suppression so you can still eat clean and well.
The 3 tips to maintain and improve lean mass apply regardless. It remains to be seen if these drugs will be used for a lifetime once started. Probably not, therefore without good habits including these 3 tips, the weight will likely be regained once off of the drugs, just like fad diets.
It's a struggle even for people who do all the right things. You may not know as much about weight control as you think.
Agreed. I have lost 90 pounds and kept it off for two years. No drugs, no surgery. Limiting carbs to 25 grams per day. Eating minimally processed foods, high quality proteins, cruciferous veggies, berries, pecans, macadamias, flax seed, yogurt and lots of water and walking - a lot. I used to eat chips, ice cream, processed foods galore…I had the diet of a movie theater usher. I used to live to eat…now I eat to live. If I don’t have it in the house, I’m not going to eat it. It’s not willpower. It’s changing your vision of yourself.
People who've lost significant amounts of weight on GLP-1 agonists gain it all back when they get off the drugs, likely because of a significant loss of lean mass or muscle. Taking these drugs without engaging in resistance training and consuming a high protein diet assures fat regain when the drugs are discontinued. Most people who use GLP-1 agonist for weight-loss do NOT engage in weight-training and will be in for a big surprise when they stop using the drugs.
@@albardo08 not true. Lean mass loss is less with GLP-1 agonists. You are repeating flawed data. Weight loss with any method can lead to regain. There is also data to suggest these medications lead to lasting weight loss.
@@Hopeful62 You are without question, wrong. It's clearly established in several medical studies that the majority of those who lose weight from GLP-1 agonist drugs gain it all back when they stop using the drugs, and definitely lose muscle mass if they don't exercise.
I feel like doctors are going to be eating their words soon in the "miracle drugs" like ozempic.
They come with a black box warning. Why does nobody mention this?
Unequically with me, I lost a good amount of muscle mass. Also, the loss of fat weight with muscle mass caused me to have angel wings....loose and wringled skin on my arms and my pectoral muscle (I am maile) as well as a great loss of leg size. In my case I lost too much weight too fast. 60lbs in a little over 5 months. I am now off the Ozempic and have been lifting weights to regain my muscle loss. Also, during my time on Ozempic I was on TRT, so the weight loss was not related to a lack of androgens. I had a lot of severe stomach cramps and constipation which aided my not wishing to eat and so I ate one small meal a day. Now I believe if I had to do this again, I would have gone with eating 3 smaller meals a day and a much slower weight loss. What I have done while off Ozempic is...GO BACK ON LOW DOSE OZEMPIC. I gained weight back at almost physiological impossible rates....a pound a day, or a two pounds every three day average. AND I was not overeating. Ozempic has to have either an undisclosed effect on mediator of overall metabolic process e.g. thyroid levels (which goes along with an increase in medullary thyroid cancer) So after about six weeks I started 'micro-dosing' at .17 mg/wk and it helped to me both lose a bit of the weight I had gained but did not cause the side effects which made it impossible to exercise. To be specific, when you have not defalcated in over a week and your intestines are in knots, lifting weights or any type of cardio is almost impossible because YOUR TOO SICK. And finally BTW, I am diabetic and the Ozempic was given me for diabetes. As you know diabetes has its own risk of serious diseases and I don't believe Ozempic should be preferentially prescribed off label for weight loss only.
Sounds like you did everything wrong
@@Hopeful62 😂
@@Hopeful62 Sounds like the prescriber did everything wrong. The diabetic patient was looking for help and was following directions

Are Statins bad for your body? What can a doctor prescribe instead?
Statins are not for everyone. Caused me lifelong pain and muscle wasting. Not monitored well. I didn't have high bad cholesterol. Supposedly it was determined that I should have more good cholesterol so I was prescribed CRESTOR. I was in extreme pain and losing my mobility when I read the information about possible serious side effects. I stopped taking CRESTOR immediately 20!years ago and no doctor has recommended a statin drug since. Not all drugs are necessary.
My cousin wouldn't listen to the story of my experience, continued to take LIPITOR because his doctor was GOD in his eyes. He was younger than I am; he got progressively worse and died.
@@g.g.matuga4986 Thank you so much for telling me this. My husband is having muscle weakness, fatigue, and a few ligament tears, all past 2 years since starting a statin. Before that, he was always really strong, energetic, and never tore ligaments, tendons or had any of these heath problems. His cholesterol isn't that bad. Thank you. I'll show him your post.
@@LDiamondz statins are
not life savers..kendberrymd eat coconut oil and fish oil to lower that cholesterol
I would absolutely agree that the GIP And gLP1 could cause muscle loss but if you train eat a lot of protein and vegetables if you desire the vegetables take your creatine you will not lose muscle but you need to get the calories in just the same
Muscle loss is not a good thing, even if proportionately fat loss is greater. The heart is a muscle.
The heart contains cardiac muscle. It is different.
Virtually all weight loss includes some amount of muscle loss...
I'm so sorry I can't remember the name in a year to two years they're going to have a brand-new shot. Not that bad side effects that we get with these other ones. They're building right now with building for they can make this medication. It's for weight loss so you don't have to have sugar problems in order to get this. I can't wait I use that for maintenance. But Google it the shock coming out in a couple years for weight loss. I had it on the tip of my tongue. Sorry people maybe y'all can Google it up and see I already been researching it😊
I loss 20lbs of muscle, went from 30% to 47% fat in 8 weeks on Ozempic. Now I’m so weak!! Back at the gym trying to get my muscles back. I had 122 lbs muscle now 95lbs muscle
Next time do a Protein Sparring Modified Fast instead.
Why would you take this drug and not work out in the first place??
Please talk about doing a 4 day water fast when on monjourno? Because I’m not hungry so I want to take advantage of this time because no hunger pains.
Omg that sounds really dangerous
FURIOUS!
I have lost at least 40% of my hair in length and thickness!
I have LOST ALL of muscle mass in my buttock. I literally have NO MUSCLE in my buttock, sitting directly on my tailbone! IT HURTS! All I have on my buttock is thin, wrinkled skin (like a 90 year old).
Finally a few weeks ago I suffered "sulfur burps" that lasted a few days. A.K.A. ROTTING FOOD / WASTE in my gut.
Eyesight is also quickly becoming worse!
I am going after the maker of "mounjaro"!
Wow 😮
u should invite attila on your show.
Atilla the Hun. 🤣🤣
The majority of people today are not getting enough protein in their diets, especially women and are losing muscle. Women on these drugs look the worse because they're losing so much muscle...when they didn't have much to begin with. And they're most likely not lifting weights, so this video was not tailored to address women on ozempic?! nothing about how hormones come in to play, pre/post menopausal women, etc. Sad to see medical professionals like yourself talking about debunking the myths when for women and men are being put at higher risk for osteopenia due to muscle loss. Because with scarocpenia or muscle loss there is bone density loss. Muscle loss of any size is detrimental to your overall health. Hooray for fat-loss but not at the expence of your muscles!!!
Michael...you should be ashamed of yourself...using a sexy photo of yourself for the thumbnail. LOL Great video as usual Dr. Mike.
The Doctor is been working hard to build those muscles .He looks amazing!!working out is really hard-So really!!
Maybe you can be more honest about the covid vaccine rather than trying to sell drugs. Kind of suspicious you spewing out videos selling this product all the time.
Monjourno gives me no appetite which I’d like to take the advantage to fast for all the wonder benefits that I want to turn on. Please talk about using these drugs to fast 3 to 4 days out of the week.
It is absolutely horrible how obvious it is that you were payed by those companies. Freaking horror.
Shut all the way up
It’s not rocket science. If you lose weight this quick you’re going to lose muscle as well. Focus on weightlifting while on it.
