The problem was that I was swinging like a "Mad Man"! Either slicing, or a dead pull left. I took a lesson a few years ago, and the pro had me hit my driver at roughly 25% of what I normally swing. Then 35%, and so on till I was swinging at about 80%. He said 80% is as fast as I should ever swing with ANY club. Result was finding the fairway. Nothing short of a spiritual awakening! 😉 I enjoyed your video and will take your tip to the range soon! All the best...Mark
Hey Steve.... I wonder if I'm doing Eureka naturally with my driver. I tried standing closed, closed grip etc... but kept hooking. I'm a golf history buff...and noticed in the early days of golf, it looked like a lot of pros stood open with the driver. When I do this and make sure my head and body are behind the ball (playing it far forward enough), I seem to strike it well. Here's my preshot routine. ... Put the club behind the ball and make sure straight line from left shoulder to clubhead. When I do this and put my feet in position, it feels like I am standing open. But when I put a club across my hips and my heels, I apparently had my body aligned as train tracks.. ie. parallel to the target line. As long as I stayed behind the ball I hit it pretty well. The most difficult part is ball position....how far forward do I play it so my clubhead closes back to square. Your thoughts? Am I doing Eureka without realizing it?
I think the concept here is worth a try, but the smother hook I struggle with seems to come from my shoulders getting too flat (coupled with a shift forward). What do you think about the shoulder turn being too flat? Will you be OK as long as you don't slide forward, or will this promote that smother hook/left pull that plagues my driver game?
That is a great tip Steve. It makes me think that every club in the bag should stay on it's own slightly adjusted swing plane. the lower the number, the lower the plane, would you agree??
been teeing off with my feet closer together, and a little closer to the ball with much better results. it really is all in the hips, unless you're john daley lol
Steve, could you do a follow up video on closing the club face? (proper release) I can get the flatter swing path, but still struggle with an open face (shots going to the right).
@@DasViking The thing is your not supposed to close the face your supposed to release through the ball . Make a point of waggling before a shot , by that i mean cocking and un cocking the wrists at the point where your left and right arm are fully extended , you can then learn how to either release or hold off through your impact area ( just past the low point) a hold off will fade , a release at impact will be fairly straight and just after should draw . Play with release and alignment (open stance closed stance ) and always always pick a target . Hitting driver hard is the fun just let it go 😮
how does a flatter swing translate to fairways/hybrids as I tend to top them at times (with flatter swing) and when I try to release I tend to hook....
Just hover the club at address. If you let the club rest on the ground at address the muscle tension in the arms are not in the ready position during the swing which causes early grounding so always hover the club.
Great drill Steve, can you explain how and the important ways of hitting driver from your knees? I think it’s mainly getting the right shoulder thru at impact?
I hardly ever practice with the driver as I always thought it was the easiest club to hit, The lightest club and goes the furthest, never had a problem with it, Never had a slice just a draw, had a hook but sorted that out, n vet had any lessons as much more satisfaction in doing it one’s self, Just to add I won plenty of competitions at two different golf clubs! My also add, I’ve won trophies at three different sports!
@marioperreault3998 I'd tell ya if I knew. The only reason that I commented was to get other people to notice your comment. If you ever find out, let me know.
I have no idea what you mean by flat. I’ve heard others say this too, but I see nothing flat in a golf swing or in what you just did. I’m missing something. Also, baseball swings ruin golf swings and vice a versa or so an old saying goes.
At the moment driver is not my friend, I am 3rd longest of the tee in our games and In a vain attempt to gain club head speed I go over the top so this will help
Have you see the Arm Alarm to allow you to swing like Ben Hogan? ua-cam.com/video/dU6wAA9dpBE/v-deo.html
That cover drive to the boundary was a thing of beauty mate. Subbed.
Thanks👍👍👍

Been searching for a driver swing that made sense and felt comfortable to me….I’ve now found it!!! Thanks Steve!
This resonated with me 12/14 fairways, my best ever🎉😎
The tip that improved my driving was keep your right arm nailed to your side until after you hit the ball.
Always great tips and knowledge of the game ! You're explanations are always so easy to understand ! Thank you so much !
Glad you like them Patrick. Thanks👍👍

Finally Feel Like Im starting to "get" the Driver Swing! can't wait to get there Next week!!

Is this same for irons steve..im very steep and I'm trying to flatten it..I just keep hearing close face p1.hing to top andcdrive down
Steve much prefer your best driver tip to that new one, I use the pink tees should I persevere with the orange tees a bit scared of skying it?cheers
Excellent tip! Notice Steve is perfectly balanced on follow thru.
For me it’s the opposite problem, coming too much from the inside. The feel for me to hit dead straight is to come way over the top. Fixes my hook.
Same
Same here. I can’t hit a slice deliberately, but I can hook the ball 150 yards left.
That is a great tip Steve. It makes me think that every club in the bag should stay on it's own slightly adjusted swing plane. the lower the number, the lower the plane, would you agree??
That's why the cobra one length seems to work for folks. Driver plane and seven iron plane except for putter.
Great feeling to have a flat feel. Love this explanation
Excellent 👏🏻👏🏻
Great video could this be applied to iron shots too?
Definitely, this works for the whole bag sans putter lol

Does your body turn through??
@@stevejohnstongolf not enough probably
Stay behind the ball and don’t tilt your shoulder. Worked for me anyway.
Great question. Sometimes this happens to me. It's tough to close that face. When I try to close it, I hit it way left.

Tried this but hit the ground behind the ball a few times. When I connected it was excellent. How do I avoid hitting the ground?

Yeh hover but also keep the body turning through impact 👍👍
weight on front foot
Top tip Steve. Thank you. Clive
Thanks Clive👏🏻👍
Very awesome video thank you but i love the slingshot swing if i want to drive a bomb
Great drill Steve, can you explain how and the important ways of hitting driver from your knees? I think it’s mainly getting the right shoulder thru at impact?
love your work mate...!
Flat swing, is it good for iron clubs too?
Love it.
Great nfo 👍
It's a great tip, but can this lead to a hook?
I hardly ever practice with the driver as I always thought it was the easiest club to hit,

Excellent 👏🏻👏🏻
Like this tip.
Steve, where are you based for teaching?
Peebles Golf Club
Here is a link to book stevejohnstongolf.as.me/ 👍
this is gold dust
"error on the flat side" which makes sense why when I try to be flat, it produces a much better shot.
Could I do the same swing with iron clubs?
Good question.
@@DasViking Well, what’s the answer?
@marioperreault3998 I'd tell ya if I knew. The only reason that I commented was to get other people to notice your comment.
If you ever find out, let me know.
I always tell myself it's like throwing a ball underarm on the downswing
Nice one👏🏻👏🏻

Give it a go. Let me know how you get on 👍👍
Has it been working?
I’d love to try Wilson but I can’t get over stupid names like Dynapower. If Wilson went the RT like Ping, Titleist, Mizuno. They’d sell more clubs.
It’s a tradition thing. I never look at the sole of the club. I’m only interested what it looks like when sitting behind the ball🤷♂️
Quite a simple method to get the idea of what the driver feels like now put a baby draw in there 😂
Give it a go👍👍
Your feet are not open
Just whip the club behind your body.
I think you are coming under it!
