This ONE Move Added 57 Yards To My Drives!

- It's no secret that distance is key now in golf. In todays video I will show you one crucial move to optimise your drives so you can hit the ball further and straighter than ever before!
The downswing, impact and follow through are the money zones of the golf swing. I see so many golfers struggle with having the correct amount of shoulder tilt through impact. As a result your angle of attack, club path and overall strike is compromised. This then affects your distance and accuracy. By having the correct amount of side bend and tilt through impact you will optimise your impact conditions helping you your drivers longer and straighter than ever before.
In this video I run through a series of downswing drills, impact drills and follow through drills that will help you learn how to extend the lead side of your body correctly through impact. Do this and you might just gain 57 yards like me!

Hi everyone, curious to hear what your LONGEST DRIVE EVER is?
Longest was about 330. Down hill, down wind & on rock hard fairways 😂
@@lewiswilliams931 still a big 300 plus drive!
285 m. That’s what, about 311 y?
I was maybe 20 years old when I did that. There was some wind behind me but the fairway wasn’t hard.
@@johnflorio3576 300+ club! That’s some good distance there
368 yards is my record, I average around 295.
Golfed with a 25 yr old yesterday. Hit it 300t right down the middle every time. He swings just like you. That's why I'm watching. Thank you.
Amazing! Hope you learned something in this video
Best explanation I’ve seen for people who swing down on driver. You lose so much distance without a positive attacks angle.
It’s a case by case situation and not a blanket statement of just hit up. Glad you enjoyed it
Just wanted to say this is one of the better videos explaining this. Played today for the first time since watching this video and without even practicing it and just focusing on more shoulder tilt had my best driving day in a long time. Zero slices, few slight fades, lots of straight drives, and a few draws.
Amazing! Glad I could help!
Giles, I tried what your showing in this video today and I was smoking it right down the fairway with around 15 extra yards. Thanks and keep up the great work. Us hackers appreciate it.
Amazing to hear! Glad I could help you!
I just found your channel and I have to say that you are a very gifted teacher. I always say 99% of teachers in any field are not great. You need to understand the swing and you need to be able to explain what students need to do simply and clearly. You also need sustainable passion! You are in that 1%, no doubt. You explain things so well. Also I note that you respond to all comments which is so important. Your channel is going to be huge, keep up the great work!
Wow thank you so much! Means so much to hear that & makes all the hard work worth it! Thank you
Wow thank you so much! Means so much to hear that & makes all the hard work worth it! Thank you
You described all of my misses with the driver. I've always been inconsistent with it. Great advice I'm going to work on this
Good luck!
Ive been struggling with driver for my first golf year, i will try to work on these tips on the range, thank you for an amazing video, earned a sub. keep up the good work, much love from a beginner golfer from Sweden.
Thank you Jonas! Amazing to help
I agree with this. I’m already doing this, and it works for me. I practice on a public driving range. I see a lot of not so good golfers. I share this with them. Especially getting the pressure to their lead leg and the side bend you’re referring to. I’m glad to see this on a video. Giles you seem to offer more great things that will really help. Getting to the lead side and side bend is important with every club…. There’s a lot of power stored doing this.
Exactly that & it’s great to hear you’re working on the move with a fantastic understanding. Thank you for sharing the video
0:13 Hi Giles, I'm not one to post comments but I have to say that your advice is head and shoulders above some other on UA-cam. You are clear, well explained and provide a solid basis for hopeful golfers like me to learn. Thankyou so much
Wow thank you Andy! It’s amazing the videos are resonating with you & are hopefully helping you with your game!
Just discovered your videos. I have to say I am highly impressed with your teaching methods. I'm 67 yrs old and love playing golf and always looking to improve. I think your videos will help me tremendously. Keep up the good work!
Thank you! Great to hear you’re enjoying my teaching methods!
Giles, thank you for the distance tips. I haven't played for about 4 years and two years ago I broke my left foot. Even so, I'm going to start playing again. I'm 67 and my last visit to the range I drove about 215 yards. I 'm confident that your tips will translate into a significant increase in distance. God Bless!

Thanks. I've been trying to get more distance on all of my clubs especially my driver. I did notice yesterday when I played my shoulders were too flat and a couple of times I focused on bringing my shoulders down, but kept coming over the top. After watching your video I will practice with the sticks and make improvement. My short game and putting are on point, just getting to the 150 mark not making good contact has been a struggle. I'm a stroke away from making good scores.

Great tip young bro. I like that chopsticks drill… I am practicing this in my living room without hitting anything. My body is already reporting that I need to get to the range as soon as possible.
The chopsticks is my favourite when it comes to this move! What felt different to you as you were doing it?

Great video!
I have a problem with the takeaway being inside the plane, and I certainly don't have that tilt with the shoulders, but more of a rotation, losing speed. I also stay back on the shot (to help with the apex) and do not power into my left foot. My average yarage with a driver is 220 yards.
Sounds like you’re turning too much too early in the backswing
@@Gilesgillgolf I can send you some videos if you like :)
Awesome Giles! You gave it a "little bit of a knock!" I like the swing you are promoting in order to generate more distance. I have been using something similar but not quite as severe (after all I'm a senior golfer) but I am definitely generating more distance. I'm trying to takeaway with a left shoulder push and pulling back the right shoulder more and then rebound off of that movement on the downswing. Always a pleasure to watch what you're advocating Giles! Keep up the good work!!
Just a little knock 😉 great to hear you’re working on similar things but also listening/working with your body. Great to hear you’re enjoying the videos

Great and effective and inspiring presentation! Thank you, Giles!!!

Brilliant Giles , it's the body action that creates speed , you explained it perfectly
Exactly that! The big muscles are the e hinge of the swing
Crazy to see how much speed you have. I played with a college golfer the other day & he was flying bunkers at 300 yards with ease. It’s awesome to see
The modern game is built off of speed!
Great drills, easy to understand how they result in the ideal driver swing! Thanks.

Great video! Wondering if for you the "feel" on the downswing is more a push with the right side or more of a pull up and back with the left? Thanks for your thoughts.
For me it’s a pull with the left but that won’t be the same for everyone
@@Gilesgillgolf Thanks!
Great tips mate!

Just starting out. 57yrs old. I fully understand the logic and physics behind your swing. As an older beginner, is there a concern about the stress placed on the back when trying to max it out? Is there a more body friendly version that can sort of achieve similar results regarding weight shift? Thanks
This is body friendly but you can try stack and tilt. Due to the fact we are tilted forwards at address you’ll always need to work into side bend
Lovely video. Is there anything you can do while doing this to reduce stress on your lower back? Thank you
Make sure your posture is great at address and only rotate as much as your body lets you. I’ve just posted a video (45 mins ago) that will run you through all of this
Hi Giles, great stuff as always. What about the grip pressure? Do we keep it light like "holding a baby bird?" I am having a problem trying to maintain a light grip pressure. Can you make a video on that? Tqvm
I’m not a fan of those analogies. I’ve never held a bird before. I’ve done videos on the grip and grip pressure earlier on. The lasso drill helps you find the right pressure

Awesome tutorial.
I am a right-handed golfer and I have only been playing for a few months. My natural swing feels like I'm pushing my rotation to the ball with my right foot instead of pushing down with my left. (I can compare this to a baseball swing).
I have good days and bad days but I'm practicing 2-3 times a week trying to correct it.
I'm hoping these tips will lead me in the right direction.

A great lesson on Driving. Cant wait to get out and practice it on the range. Thank you.

Actually got t hat wrong. A guy by the name Cooper hit a drive over 787 yards due to it hitting the path lol, however Dustin Johnson hit a drive 489 yards in a match play event, however that is nor accepted as it was in match play? I mean reallY???
Incredible again! Why you don’t have 100k subs yet I don’t know

Great advice! Can you talk a little about the feeling in your shoulders and arms at the top of the swing in transition. My big issue is trying to keep them ‘quiet’ but it’s quite challenging. Thx.
Watch my video coming out tomorrow or Wednesday. That’ll show you why you struggle with it and how to fix it
Giles, it he chopstick drill applicable to irons, hybirds, etc., in addition to the driver? Great videos!
Yes it is. Works great for all clubs
@@Gilesgillgolf- I’m assuming that the ball position would change for the iron chopstick drill, as you are trying to compress the ball rather than hit up with the driver ?
Another great video! Only problem I am having incorporating these moves with irons is that I now find it very hard to hit ball first then turf. Any ideas?
Check setup first and then make sure your clubface is in a good spot. If it’s open you’ll have to throw and lose your angles too early making a divot hard
Giles you have explained this brilliantly! Awesome job! Question though.... I'm 60 with a not so great back (and I'm 6'-3"). I do have an upper single digit handicap, so I feel my game is "decent". My question is... will this help someone of my age (not having a young buck back like yourself)? I'd love to be able to hit further with more consistency, thus shaving strokes and ultimately lower the fatigue in my back!
It will for sure help you! I’ve done a video on the seniors guide to the golf swing so be sure to check that out
@@Gilesgillgolf fantastic - thanks!

Will try this tomorrow!! Thank you!!!!!
Good luck
Oooh !!! Good one. I will certainly report back. I can tell you that my carry at this moment with a Ping G410 plus is only about 200 yds. with range balls. If I hit the back fence that will be about 225 yds. so we'll see. My goal has been just a bit more I would like to see 235 but that's a bit of an ask given my age. 235 yds. with some rollout would be very satisfactory because actual play would be with a much better golf ball.
You’ll usually see about a 10% difference between range balls and normal balls but hopefully these tips can help you get over the line consistently
Great drills!!!

Interesting, I'm going to try this at the range tomorrow.
Just practicing at home I noticed with my shorter clubs like wedges I naturally have that lean and those are my best clubs. But my longer clubs my shoulders are much more flat and I can struggle with them. Going to see if that extra tilt helps.
Let me know how it goes
Great video and stick drill. My question is: does the side bend promote an inside club head path? And are you trying to hit up on the ball or does that happen automatically with this technique? Thanks
Yes it does promote more of an inside path and I’m just focusing on the body movements. When you do this the angle of attack will largely take care of itself
I love videos like these i am using every tip that i can find. And they all add up my drive now goes 999+yards with all the tips that UA-cam golfers are giving

Hi what app do you have for swing speed on your phone cheers keep up the good work
It’s a TrackMan and it sends the data to my phone
This sequencing has always been natural and easy for me. My question is how do you blend this with what the hands and arms should be doing in the downswing? I know that the hands need to be working fast early in the downswing (like the Rory pump drill), but when should the hands start working down hard relative to the moves you show here? I’ve played well with both feels (body and hands) but have never been able to play well with both together. I tend to rotate too soon and too early so a feel that gives me the most driver speed is basically feeling like my back is to the target for the whole down swing, which I initiate with a shift and hard firing of arms and hands.
Notice how you said feel. Feel vs real are two different things & you’ve answered what you should feel in this question above
Thanks. Now just need to neutralize my 8 degree in to out swing path. @@Gilesgillgolf
@@ChesterCopperpot767 can be a variety of reasons for that
this is pretty sweet. i average 270 yards with 2-3 300 yard driver around with wind behind but i know i m doing it wrong, and my playing partners mock me because i hit one in the middle of the fair way but tell them i didnt get all of it. QUESTION should I try and give some of this to my irons?
Thank you! This move is great for accuracy and distance so I hope it helps!
Great video!! Right side bend/left side extension = shoulder tilt = big drives.
Thank you! Exactly that!
Thank you. Got yourself a new sub.
Amazing! Thank you!
Very good tutorial and tips !
Thank you!
Would love to see your spin. Those numbers look at lot like mine with that issue. I sometimes get 4000 rpm and dont mean to.
Spin is around 2200-2600
I think a lot of amateurs get into this movement by trying to fix an early extension. They end up not extending at all because they get scared of standing up out of posture.
But you actually need to stand up (extend) once you have shifted weight to your lead side. As you feel you stand up, it actually creates rotation and clubhead speed as it releases.
You do always extend but like in the name players do it too early. It’s understanding how to get into the right position and then extend from there
So when I’ve topped my drive. Is it safe to say the pink castle tee I use is potentially too low to achieve hitting more up?? And is possibly making my shoulders naturally being more level??
Thanks
I would say if you’re topping you’re driver then there is a different issue. Looking to see if your standing up through impact and if so try and figure it the root cause. Tee height is the last change
@@Gilesgillgolf thanks. I very rarely top it but sometimes I maybe put too much shoulder tilt at address. I’m fairly consistent with my driver but I never seem to launch it higher. Even set at 12 degrees. Usually around the 220 ish or 250+ if I cream one from the middle.
@@kidsstopmecarping2130 I would say make tilt you want is 6 degrees. Too much can shift your arc too far back

Yes it would. I’ve done videos on that
Can we use this concept also on irons?
Yes this same concept works with irons

Thank you Benjamin!
Wow! I like math and physics, and have KNOWN that the tilt in the shoulders is needed. Over the years, I'm sure there was a tilt during the "longer drive" years. (I used to try to "finish high")
Today, standing in the kitchen, trying to do the chopstick drill just with my shoulders - I can really feel my body trying to go to a flat shoulder turn. It takes effort to change, but knowing what I'm striving for sure helps!
Amazing! Know you have a drill that helps you develop the feels for the concept you know you’re trying to achieve
Fantastic video, thank you!
Glad you liked it!
