You wouldnt believe it a pro taught me this last week..Turning my right arm around at address and i started hitting more penetrating shots even though it feels a bit weird..Thanks for the vid.
@damienkazmar30 that's awesome, great signs for me to say you have a great coach! Keep working on this and keep me posted with how you're getting on, thanks for commenting!
@harryshawgolf No worries the lesson was only last week im a 13 hcp but it was to soon to use in the comp last weekend..Anyway ive been practising it and it feels more natural now espec with the wrist turn at the end you talked about ..ive been hitting them well in practice so this weekend will introduce this new set up into my comp round..Thankyou.
This was incredibly helpful and the “swing thought” of skimming a stone is really smart. I’ve never focused on how that right elbow should set at address. Can’t wait to get to the range. Just subscribed and now watching more. Great stuff Harry.
Excellent job Harry in explaining your 5 minute right (trail) arm set drill! This is a drill that I can use outside or inside! It definitely helps muscle memory! One of Your Best!! Well Done Harry!!!
Ok Harry, here’s the thing. First thank you for this detailed instruction on how the right arm works. Now as to the downswing. My best, most compressed, I focus on my right elbow and left shoulder movements while keeping my chest in its backswing position. If I try to bump, turn or slide as you demonstrate throwing a ball I will come over the top. I guess my question is, am I going down a rabbit hole by simply focusing on an arm swing?
Another great video. Having seen your latest video and enjoyed it I am going back on past ones. The content is great so relevant to me and so well explained. Will go to the range, when open, and try this although now it has stopped snowing could try it in the back garden. Thanks Harry!
Nice drill. First time seeing you. When I took a lesson, the pro said that I had a lawn mower backswing. I didn't understand at the time. But since then, I understand.
This is a vital part of the setup and take away, but with a bit of effort, editing and animation you can make this a 40sec short and get a ton of views/likes
Thanks for the video. That was exactly what I was working on today with my back swing. I just didn't hold the serving tray in my hand at the top of the back swing. I now need to throw that stone to get the extension through the down swing.
Thanks, great explanation and it works for most golfers. Keeping the right elbow in towards the body and avoiding the chicken leg at top of swing solves consistency problems.
WOW, I can't believe what a difference this has made. My contact is solid, ball flight is more penetrating. I've gone from hitting a slight fade to a baby draw. Thank you!🎉
A gentleman at my local course showed this to me and the results were immediate. The consistency and contact became more, well...consistent. I wish I'd had this information when I first began instead of trying to figure things out for over a year with no help from instructors. Thanks for this video. I'm sure it's been explained before but this is the 1st time I ran across this information
Absolute eureka moment 🤯 I cannot believe I have just picked up my club and my elbow is actually pointing outwards not inwards. I cannot wait to get to the driving range tomorrow and find out what happens.👏👏👏👏
Excellent way of teaching the concept. I have been using this for a couple months and it is helping. I do have a concern about the width of the backswing. The closer the humerus (upper arm) remains to the body during takeaway, the lesser the width. My goal is for my humerus to be perpendicular to the body and the angle at my elbow to be between 70 and 80 degrees
Thank you, it’s great to read you’ve been using this drill for some time! Very interesting what you’re focusing on at the moment. If you’re ever in need of a second pair of eyes on your swing… I do in person and online lessons!
Ok now this is new to me. Im a detail nerd so even though one swing doesnt suit all i still like to know a solid best practice and ive not seen this before. Ill have to try this out and get a feel for it
@paulf5351 for this exercise the right arm and tricep will natural extend and straighten during the downswing. Similar to the feeling of skimming the stone.
Please do a video on the impact position and any drills for it because I had an excellent contact position until I took a few lessons and have not been able to find my swing since
@jg1316 i'd suggest taking a look at the video i posted last week all about a technique that helps ball striking, good impact leads to goo ball striking... ua-cam.com/video/UfwzgwuwzVA/v-deo.html
Great lesson/tip. I've always been able to throw a ball hard but for some reason with the golf swing my right elbow stays high and pulled back at the top of the swing and my hand leads my right elbow on the downswing. I'd never throw a ball in that manner.
Great advice Harry and something that I have struggled with, for could do the backswing but always struggled to get the elbow forward in the downswing. Also could you do something on the release, for is it a throw for I seem to hold on and don’t get a full release. Have now subscribed. 👍
@davidwhitnall9783 thanks for commenting, glad you enjoyed the video, with regards to the release, i would take a look at this video here... ua-cam.com/video/8uglPzR_PpE/v-deo.html
Great Video; I wonder why no one ever talks about the heading movement in the stone/ball throwing slow mo video. The lateral movement on the face on angle is tremendous. The idea that we need to keep the head back and mess around with our involuntary balance mechanisms only in the golf swing but in no other sport or activity like throwing a baseball. The head being soft and following the bodys movement will only help rotation even more.....
@joeyshea7676 Thank you, great point, as long as the sternum is in line or ahead of the golf ball at impact it's perfect, anything moving back of that isn't great. But the head can stay back as the body shifts/ rotates forward.
Hi Harry, this is an excellent explanation. Would love to see an upcoming video on releasing the club. Do you advocate rotating the arm to close the face?
@sscully67 thank you, i would focus more on the lead arm to control the release of the club face, I recently posted a video on this topic, take a look her: ua-cam.com/video/ZAFfAupXFSw/v-deo.html
Hello Harry. Thank you for the well demonstrated intention of the down swing. So I have tried this repeatedly and my question is: with the elbow being thrown inwards towards to my body as if skipping a stone does centrifugal force and natural forces direct the club head to the ball or is there an attempt by me to fire the club head to assist all of the other forces. Look forward to your reply and thanks again for your explanation.
@jerrybrouwer2494 thanks for commenting, really appreciate it, and excellent question. so this should naturally take place assuming your wrists angles are good and your club path is relatively on plane.
@AndrewReynolds-e9g note taken, will look into this, in the meantime, i'd take a look at this video as although it's not specifically all about the shoulders, it'll certainly help with this: ua-cam.com/video/f11_benAfIA/v-deo.html
Wjhung2 see Saguto golf he techs to keep majority of your weight on your front foot, helps tremendously with weight transfer because weight is already on the front side.
Wow it all makes sense now... when i see my divot going to the left it is all down to my right elbow going away on back swing ... so no chance of hitting through the ball.
This is the second video by Harry on this drill - I found this useful seeing the new video, just as a reminder Still one of the most overlooked set up positions by most amateurs, great video once again.
Hello Harry, I have a question. I'm a right handed golf player. I write with my right hand. But then it gets tricky: I throw a ball, or skim stones with my left hand. I play soccer with my left foot. And throw a ball with my left hand/arm. So I have al these things working differently. I know the feeling of skimming a stone, but not with my right arm. Which is often reffered to in golf. How can I find this feeling in my trailing arm being a "lefty". THanks!
@thiskiddefuses great question, i would suggest starting off very slow, watching the video again where i talk about how the body begins to open first then the arm follows, rehearse this movement at your own pace and begin building it up when it suits you!
Years ago an unqualified golf instructor had me place a head cover under my right armpit and said it shouldn't fall out during the swing.....similar to what you are explaining here. After that I developed the worst case of the shanks and had to go to a qualified golf instructor to fix that. What was I doing wrong?
@kevinwhelehan421 great question, either standing too close to the ball rotating the upper body too early during the downswing, leaving the face very open from your lead wrist being too extended. If you want me to clarify any of this head over to Skillest and drop me a message! We can take a look at your swing and take it from there!
This drill can be practiced anywhere. By gripping down the club, you can literally do right-arm swings, training the elbow to work properly. The bicep curl idea is fantastic, and the "stone skipping" metaphor takes care of the transition and weight shift. Then blend in a little left arm control, keeping it connected to your chest, and you're set!
It doesn’t necessarily because your lower arm can rotate independently of your upper arm. But you could just weaken your left hand grip to counter act this which would probably stabilize face rotation and prevent over closure of the face.
@jamesgerboc it can do, this is why when i spoke about setting up with the right arm we twist our wrist back so the palm faces the grip before holding the club.
@@harryshawgolf Im confused. It would be very difficult to naturally rotate or allow your arm to naturally rotate internally. You'd have to point your right elbow to the sky on your backswing and no one does that. Are you simply suggesting that our trailing forearm point up throughout the swing, especially the downswing?
Forgot to mention the float load your also doing with your trail wrist coming down. This is where your speed is coming from. Most golfers don’t pick up on that and since you never mentioned it, they’re definitely not gonna pick it up but you’re doing it as all good golfers and 100% of all tour players do that.
@llgg5929 yes this is all to do with the wrists angles, which i'm planning on posting a video on this topic very soon which works with this one very well./ Stay tuned, thanks for commenting!
Can you give a video where you’re looking from the front point of view so we can see how the hands pass the body or the the left toe because it’s always angled from back or side but in reality a lot of people tend to try to bring their hands straight down the line when we know your hands have to go back in. It’s a reinforcement if we can see it from a front angle point of view, if that makes sense
@yihan206 very good idea, i'll struggle to make this work for now but this video here i posted last week is great if you're looking for the correct exit pattern to suit this drill... ua-cam.com/video/8uglPzR_PpE/v-deo.html
9:41 Enjoyed the video but have found that anytime I try and bring the right arm into my swing thoughts, it goes awry. I'm a right-handed golfer who has become left arm dominant. Any thoughts on how to get my right arm more involved? I've also had terrible bouts with putting and chipping yipps. The only way I have been able to keep playing is keeping the right arm very passive.
@danflynn724 i would practice these drills right hand only, then take a look at the left arm video i did last week... ua-cam.com/video/ZAFfAupXFSw/v-deo.html then slowly combine the two, find a feel that suits you and stick with that for normal swings!
@l0rdkeithingt0n would recommend the same video below, and for the chicken wing on the way through, this left arm video works a treat for that... ua-cam.com/video/ZAFfAupXFSw/v-deo.html
The golf swing is a throwing motion. The skipping stone thought doesn’t work well for me but I like to pretend the head of my golf club will fling off and I swing in my backyard and try to imagine throwing my club head over my neighbors’ home.
Take a look at when I combine the backswing with the downswing with the right arm. That’s the drill. But to do it you have to learn the movements in stages hence why we start with breaking it down then brining it together.
To take this to the course check out my new course management guide here: harryshawgolf.kit.com/products/thecourseguide
Harry, as a new golfer (at 58) this drill was very useful/informative. Thank you.
@akafudge that's great to read thanks for letting me know!
You wouldnt believe it a pro taught me this last week..Turning my right arm around at address and i started hitting more penetrating shots even though it feels a bit weird..Thanks for the vid.

@damienkazmar30 Brilliant, thanks for letting me know, do keep me posted!
@harryshawgolf Hit a eagle 3 on a par 5 on the weekend ..Holed out with this grip from 140 mtr 7 iron spun back a metre.. Gold..!
This was incredibly helpful and the “swing thought” of skimming a stone is really smart. I’ve never focused on how that right elbow should set at address. Can’t wait to get to the range. Just subscribed and now watching more. Great stuff Harry.
@VincentRubino-w8u that's great to read thanks for letting me know and thanks for subscribing. More to come!
This is possibly the most fundamental part of taking the club away. Ive learned a lot from this tutorial today thank you.
@aljames7345 you're very welcome, thanks for commenting!
Excellent job Harry in explaining your 5 minute right (trail) arm set drill! This is a drill that I can use outside or inside! It definitely helps muscle memory! One of Your Best!! Well Done Harry!!!
@johnschwartz1536 thanks John, much appreciated as always, I'll take note of this as the best you've watched and focus more of creating the same!
Thanks!
@marybethryan9973 thank you!

@susancrowther9998 thank you Susan, really pleased you're enjoying all my videos. Looking forward to seeing you down for a lesson!
Nice drill. First time seeing you. When I took a lesson, the pro said that I had a lawn mower backswing. I didn't understand at the time. But since then, I understand.
I took this to the range today. Started from the position where the club is parallel to the ground. Strait or draw was the ball flight. Thank you!
@clintchambers7156 that's great to read, sounds like a consistent all flight you can work with.
I’ve watched a lot of videos Harry and this is by far a better and easier swing thought. Thanks ⛳️
@stevencuthbertson3363 you're very welcome, thanks for commenting!
I can not believe how much this helped me! I've had the wrong right hand grip for years. That changed today. Thank you!
@txpitmaster6127 you're very welcome, glad this has helped you, keep me posted!
Great golf video! Thanks Harry! 😍👏👏👏
@janicetomaso2129 thank you!
This is a vital part of the setup and take away, but with a bit of effort, editing and animation you can make this a 40sec short and get a ton of views/likes
@gmarais1986 it certainly is a vital part, and I think that's a great idea, I'll see if i can do a shorter video on this too!
Thanks for the video. That was exactly what I was working on today with my back swing. I just didn't hold the serving tray in my hand at the top of the back swing. I now need to throw that stone to get the extension through the down swing.
@stefankisling8874 you're welcome, glad this works well for you, yes adding that point of 'serving the tray is excellent'
Thanks, great explanation and it works for most golfers. Keeping the right elbow in towards the body and avoiding the chicken leg at top of swing solves consistency problems.
@tdee17 thank you, glad you enjoyed the video!
Great explanation of getting the trail arm in an externally rotated position. This helps a lot. Excellent video, thanks!
@user-qd5tq1ck4w thank you, really pleased this has helped you!
WOW, I can't believe what a difference this has made. My contact is solid, ball flight is more penetrating. I've gone from hitting a slight fade to a baby draw. Thank you!🎉
@stevelapp1233 that's amazing to read thanks for letting me know, keep me posted!
Out of all the youtube videos I have seen regarding golf drills, or explaining the swing and execution. This is definitely the cats pajamas.
Haha thanks a lot, really pleased you’ve enjoyed the video!
First time viewer. Not new to the concepts, but great presentation/information
@markhospers8264 thanks mark, pleased you enjoyed the presentation of the video!
Bonjour monsieur cette vidéo est tout simplement magnifique de compréhension merci Monsieur
@josephfascella7084 thank you, glad you think it's magnificent! More to come just like this one!

@marcelomedina9972 that's brilliant to read, thanks for letting me know, glad you've found huge success with this already!
Great video! Thanks! I hit the ball much better thinking about the right elbow, but I didn't know how to do it correctly. Will work on this!
@greghill5183 that's great to read, give it a try and let me know how you get on!
Thanks, Harry. Good video, step by step how the right arm works in the golf swing.
@OscarGonzalez-vg3cp thanks for commenting, you're welcome!
Absolute eureka moment 🤯 I cannot believe I have just picked up my club and my elbow is actually pointing outwards not inwards. I cannot wait to get to the driving range tomorrow and find out what happens.👏👏👏👏
@davewinter1350 that's so great to read thanks for letting me know, how di you get on at the driving range?
Exactly what I needed. Thank you.
@RedOakStudio you're very welcome, glad you've found exactly what you needed!
Course waterlogged so I tried this at the range. Amazing results- hopefully try on the course tomorrow
@denisefirth6141 brilliant, yes this give this a try on the course and let me know how you get on!

great video. very easy to practice and repeat.
@daviddonovan3411 thank you!
Ok now this is new to me. Im a detail nerd so even though one swing doesnt suit all i still like to know a solid best practice and ive not seen this before.
Ill have to try this out and get a feel for it
Yes give this a go as I can promise you now it works wonders, just read the rest of the comments!
Great video Harry ⛳️ 🏌️ 👍
@paulbunn72 thank you!
I am loving the example of skimming a stone, very well explained!
@lukewhitehill5050 thank you!
You do the bicept curl woudn't using the complmentary tricept to straiten the arm on the way down add power?
@paulf5351 for this exercise the right arm and tricep will natural extend and straighten during the downswing. Similar to the feeling of skimming the stone.
Really good video, I will implement this into my off season training regiment
@terrypeeples1942 yes do so, if you're wanting more drills to suit your swing for winter feel free to reach out to me on Skillest!
this is a great explanation. palm down and then up, rotate wrist to grip club
@douglaspetersen7414 thank you, pleased you enjoyed the video!

This is the gold. ✨🌴
@609_ thank you!
Love This! Thank you!
Can you go through increase and decrease of draw spin and how to set the body up to control this?
@LoopyCM thank you, so it sounds like you're looking for a video that gets you hitting more fades as opposed to the poor shots being hooks?
Left arm through the swing. Thanks!

Great video. I need to get into gear and do this drill.
@nickr8339 definitely, work on this and feel free to reach out to me on Skillest if you're wanting me to check the swing!

@gregcochennet385 thank you, keep me posted with how it goes!
Enjoyed the video and excellent tip. What was the club you hit into the screen?
@paso193 i'm pretty sure i used an Titleist 8 iron for this one.
Great content Harry what about for 3wood?
@trippjones7489 this also applies for 3 wood, but i'll do a video on this topic very soon!
Could you please do a video on the importance of your shoulder rotation. One mistake beginners swing first with arms no rottating there shoulders.
@AndrewReynolds-e9g note taken, will look into this, in the meantime, i'd take a look at this video as although it's not specifically all about the shoulders, it'll certainly help with this: ua-cam.com/video/f11_benAfIA/v-deo.html

@stanlee399 thank you!
This get is addictive
@JexxGrundy I'll take that as a compliment, thanks for sharing your thoughts.
I would love to see your swing as viewed from above. It would greatly improve my understanding of swing path...
@Geno-c7o thanks for commenting with your idea, i really like this... it's just finding a camera that makes that work.
Does this apply to driver as well? Thanks
@fofojigga7391 yes just promote a wider arc of the club!
Are those techniques all the same for all kind of clubs???
@RioThalieb works with every one!
This is the second video by Harry on this drill - I found this useful seeing the new video, just as a reminder
Still one of the most overlooked set up positions by most amateurs, great video once again.
@pjjs110 it's certainly a popular topic this isn't it! Thanks for commenting, really pleased you enjoyed the video!

@sonnyjames8922 i've helped many golfers in the same position, reach out to me on Skillest and i'll help you actually achieve your goals!
Always seen the pro's arms looking like that. A great explanation , skimming a stone is great idea better than trying to hit it hard. Thanks Harry
@johnanthony6214 glad you like my tips and demonstrations, let me know how it goes at the range, and thanks for commenting!
Doesn't rotating the right arm externally in the setup cause a stronger grip, which you then have to adjust to?

@@harryshawgolf Im confused. It would be very difficult to naturally rotate or allow your arm to naturally rotate internally. You'd have to point your right elbow to the sky on your backswing and no one does that. Are you simply suggesting that our trailing forearm point up throughout the swing, especially the downswing?
@jamesgerboc i'm suggesting you give this a try, it's worked for thousands of golfers already so it's a high possibility it'll work for you too!
Does this work with driver
@stevenreed2614 yes, would just recommend a wider arc (takeaway).
Does your left arm have the same structure as your right arm at set up?
I have thought about this because I can chicken wing on both sides
@paulsheehy2208 no it doesn't... ua-cam.com/video/SpU55zogCaU/v-deo.html it's worth watching this video where i talk about the two at setup!
@l0rdkeithingt0n would recommend the same video below, and for the chicken wing on the way through, this left arm video works a treat for that... ua-cam.com/video/ZAFfAupXFSw/v-deo.html
Place a tennis ball in right arm pit start with 20 yard pitches build to full swing. Golf is easy!!!
@maxsmart8954 that's an interesting way, but makes so much sense to work.
Skim the stone maroochi!
@al10587 yes!
Well done…
@711himself thank you!
The golf swing is a throwing motion. The skipping stone thought doesn’t work well for me but I like to pretend the head of my golf club will fling off and I swing in my backyard and try to imagine throwing my club head over my neighbors’ home.
@floater156 that sounds like another great feel to produce the same action in your golf swing!
Rock skimming
@rogermoores9416 yes!
Mind numbing.
@snapdragon7505 thanks for sharing your thoughts I'll take note to simplify this even more so in future videos.
What is the drill ?
Take a look at when I combine the backswing with the downswing with the right arm. That’s the drill. But to do it you have to learn the movements in stages hence why we start with breaking it down then brining it together.
