      It should only take 1 minute and a half to change a tire and follow all best practice guid lines while doing it. These guys were reckless the first dude threw his dead tire and knocked someones wheel on the face but honestly this doesn't obstruct quality. The only thing you cant do fast is torque. I can do a rotation in 8-12 minutes alone and do 2 new in 8-12 minutes that's all it should take. Imagine working on 300 cars and if you move slowly you'll end up working g a 17 hour shift. Go home at 2am wake up at 6 to get there by 7. You dont even realize how necessary it is to do this fast. Especially during winter rush in our northern regions.

      When your crew chief stages the tires and fils out the cims card he should stack them dot up. Helpful hint

    • @RyMann88
      @RyMann88 5 років тому

      In all honesty, time and memory. In most places, you know what direction the tire should face. A vast majority of them are symmetrical so it doesn't really matter. The tip I usually give my newer techs "When in doubt, DOT out." A quick glance at the tread to make sure it's not directional first, then just stick the DOT side out. Putting the DOT every time, even on symmetrical tires is a good practice anyway for potential warranty services is an upside, as you don't need to lift the vehicle (or crawl under) to make sure the tire IS one that was installed by your company (not that it matters given how tires are mass produced these days).

    • @RyMann88
      @RyMann88 5 років тому +4

      Dude, tire tech work isn't difficult by any means (pretty much anyone without a major disability or weight restriction can do it), but damn if it doesn't break you down. I just want my "shop" to get rid of these stupid flat lifts (parallel lifts, belly lifts, etc) and get us some damn two-post lifts. We can only get the wheels 3 feet off the ground at maximum (factoring any sag in the suspension), which means your crouched or kneeling A LOT.

      @RyMann88 5 років тому +1

      It's not much different. The machines they're using are easier IMO. The ones we've have you pull the spoon towards you rather than from right to left. It can get sketchy if you don't make sure you have a firm grip because if that spoon slips out and you have a loose grip, it can fly at your face or away from you (one of our machines is literally in front of a window). The problem with it being the way mine are set up, you're more than likely going to "wiggle" the spoon since your arm is extended in front of you across the wheel rather than off to your side.

      Unless requested by customer or changing tire on custom rim, the rim is clamped from the inside on the machine with teeth. On custom rims or special request by customer, the rim is clamped from the outside. From what I've seen, putting balance weights on scratches a rim more than changing the tire. The balance weights can be very stubborn to go on.

Not to mention the time it takes to pull in the vehicle, put it in the air, take the tires off, then putting them back on, retorquing the tires, and pulling it back out. Still, an impressive performance as far as mount and dismount, and valve change.

      With 2 or more techs, yes. One tech, no. One tech doing every single step correctly averages about 30-45 minutes. Plus this is literally dismounting and mounting a tire. Doesn't include removing the wheel, deflating, and balancing. You must be a real fun guy to work for.

  • @TheCoolStuffHD
    @TheCoolStuffHD 6 років тому

    Maybe this is how they fucked up my brand new wheels that I paid $500 for. Luckily they replaced the damaged one after 2 1/2 weeks. And the flat repairs are atrocious! Tire plug was hanging out, tears and more holes in the rubber next to it, not to mention that before it'd leak from 35psi to 19 in 2-3 days, now it goes from 35psi to 18 overnight.

    I am not talking about this store but the real busy stores cut corners. They care more about quantity then quality. That is not the discount tire way. Their numbers may look great but they are cheaters. You wouldn't be doing any of that shit around me if I was your SC.

      our store in littleton was 3rd busiest in the country in october-november and #1 in november of 2015 (110 down at 5:00. yikes) but I'm being honest, we don't cut significant corners at all. mostly its just making a mess, like not cleaning up old wheel weights on the ground lol

      Hm... Might ask a co-worker to film me at least "attempting" to do this. What are your conditions? My common sizes we do are alloy wheels with 225/65R17. These things matter as lighter wheels and tires can make a huge difference. That being said, do this with a Toyota steel wheel and let me know if your time changes, them itty bitty drop centers on those can make that bottom bead a fighter sometimes.
