  • A time comparison to see how much faster spraying is compared to rolling emulsion paint on walls and ceilings. I use Johnstone's Coverplus Vinyl matt for this test, I think it will be my go to paint brand.

    First of all many thanks for the kind comments. You did a very fair comparison and after watching this I may well have been tempted to buy an airless sprayer back in the days when I was building for a living. I can certainly see in your circumstances with the amount you have to do that the sprayer is a definite winner over the roller. For anyone painting say just a couple of rooms I still think it is debateable as you would have to add in the time to go and hire one and return it plus the costs. Another great video and a big help for anyone doing a similar job. Well done and keep up the good work.

      You're right, I wouldn't be getting a sprayer just for a couple of rooms 👍

      I bought a sprayer when renovating my house mainly for the ceilings as there are ceiling roses and ornate coving and other plaster features that were not going to look as good done with a brush/roller. Plus it would have taken ages.

    Big ass burger!
    Fwiw, completely agree on spraying. Especially what you're doing, a full room / space with minimal masking. If you've got to mask all the trim and the ceilings etc. it's debatable if its worth it (believe me I've done it!), but on a room like this - no brainer!

    I was tempted to try spraying with a whole house to do, but in the end just went with roller. It’s a shame sprayers are so expensive here compared with US. The Graco corded airless sprayer is 1/5 of the price in the USA versus Europe and no official imports to UK.

    I'm really tempted by a sprayer as I like refurbishing wooden furniture and the finish with a paintbrush or small gloss roller just isn't as smooth as I'd like it to be

    Yo Ironmaiden 🎸🎸 I love gadgets, any excuse for me, however, in "a normal house", rooms are quite small & not usually all painted the same colour, it would take an hour or two to paint one & the time isn't really a big factor & rooms are redecorated randomly. You on the other hand, have loads of work to do & time is important, so your needs are different.
    BTW, to get an even finish when spraying, go horizontal as well as vertical

      Yeah I'll probably be cross hatching the ceilings in the barn... If I can reach that is 😬 I think I might have to get one of them hyde poles from America

    Once the skirts and architraves are on, are you going to need another top coat to cover/hide the caulk?

    • @THE-AIDEN-PROJECT
      @THE-AIDEN-PROJECT  2 роки тому +1

      I'll play it by ear but I think I'll maybe just cut in some emulsion with a small brush if I need to cover any caulk. I'll be spraying the skirts so I won't really know until its in front of me I guess

    Sprayers are brilliant for if you’re working on new builds, spraying at least an entire house a day and you have an apprentice or labourer going around after you tidying up because there will always be a bit of mess left behind you. Some people can knock out multiple houses a day because they have nothing to work around, but as soon as you get those carpets laid, doors hung, kitchens kitted etc it’s really not worth spraying. That’s just my honest opinion, especially as a good professional sprayer with good tips will cost around £1k. Anyway, you seem to know all our decorators tricks and doing a pretty good job from what I can see. You even know the new roller trick with the masking tape! 😂

    Those blue Harris rollers are the way and the light. I've tried a few types and it was the best for me too using clay paints like Earthborn. I find it's good to run them under water and use a nailbrush to remove any loose fluff before using them otherwise you're forever picking it off the wall, and if you miss a bit it's bloody annoying when it's dried in, or you have to pick it off and not make a mess of the finish. I'd love to do spraying but I do things in small bits or individual rooms so it's not worth it for me (plus storage - my garage is getting a tad full these days) and I hate masking because I'm terrible at it, so the less I have to do the better! But for big areas and a whole house job, it'd be a no brainer. I know a professional painter and decorator and he was on a trade podcast (I listened in as he's a mate) and he said that spraying changed his world: He had been getting fed up with the work but since he started spraying it has transformed how he thinks about the work he can do. He's now even got a workshop and sprays furniture for people - kitchens are popular to give them a fresh look without replacing the whole thing. He still uses brushes and rollers depending on what he's doing but he reckons the sprayer is the way forward most of the time.

      I'll be on the hunt for a nice brush next, have you found a preference yet? I'll be spraying my kitchens 😬 hopefully I'll do a good job of it!

      @@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT I am awful with brushes, I am incapable of not leaving lines no matter how hard I try. I suspect I'm not patient enough as I don't much like painting anyway. I really need to get better at it. I don't know how much difference the brushes make to be honest, I've been using the Harris Trade Fine Tip sets of 5 brushes as they have wooden handles (better than plastic) and they're fairly inexpensive from everyone's favourite industrial park retailer. I have toyed with the idea of the Wooster or other better brushes but have never quite got round to it. Perhaps next time out I should - I'm sure the wife will be agitating for me to paint another room soon enough!
