My Dad helped me out when I bought my first house a few months ago and he had to do 4 coats with the easy care. He said in all his years as a decorator he had never had to paint that many coats on a wall.

I can't thank you enough for putting me onto this Johnstones I have just done the kitchen really pleased with the quality of the paint nice and thick and rolls on well I noticed that it's very good at hiding minor wall imperfections.

acrylic eggshell is best for bathrooms years ago it was oil based eggshell a lot of the time its better to add mould protection in yourself

I always back roll when cutting in or always find it picture frames as you call it. I would really recommend getting some angled head brushes for cutting in, it makes life so much easier. I have a set of Purdy Elite Dale cutting in brushes and although expensive they are excellent brushes and give a great finish and make cutting in so much easier. Combine them with Wooster Pelican Paint Kettle and a mini roller and it makes painting a lot easier and quicker. The info about the paint was very interesting. Dulux as you say is the go to for DIY due to marketing.

I thought I might get away with not back rolling straight away as I rolled with the 9inch in the short space of time, that didn't quite work out though 🤦‍♂️ I'll definitely get myself some decent brushes in the future so will try out the Purdy ones 👍 I just used what I had laying about for this. I have a couple of nice small brushes from when I painted our sash windows, you're right the high quality ones do make it much easier

Dulux trade diamond matt is great and probably the most scrubbable, but it can be pricey unless you wait for the 20% offers. Albany and Johnstones have comparable products though at half the cost

I've never tried diamond matt it but I see it has the same scrub rating. Maybe it's more expensive because the marketing department decided they should call it diamond so it appears harder and tougher? 😂
It looks like Albany paint is made by the same firm as Crown. I wonder which is better 🤔

Used some Johnstone's trade myself. Was pricey but the finish was amazing. The satin gloss goes on a dream especially for doors with a mini roller. I've had picture framing in the past so now I cut in as I go. Bit of a pain but it works.

    • @THE-AIDEN-PROJECT

I'm sure there's probably a technique where you could cut in all the way round then do the main bit with a roller. Maybe with a top notch brush and the paint slightly thinned then feather it out abit... Maybe? 🤷‍♂️

Ever used Crown trade clean extreme? Another scrubbable emulsion, I REALLY rate it. Cheaper than the deluxe (not sure compared to the Johnstones), the finish is certainly better than the deluxe - which we used in our master bedroom and kitchen but I would use the Crown instead next time. Did one of our bedrooms in it recently in the Crown, the wall plastering was far from perfect (I did my best on it with the prep work) but the finish is so flat, I was properly impressed with it.
Next time I'll give that Johnstones a go.
Unrelated but the one deluxe paint I really do rate is the trade satinwood, yeh it's oil based, but even with a brush it dries so smooth and takes all the brush marks out, recently tried some WRX trade satinwood, which sprayed beautifully, but was literally unusable with a brush, just brush marks for days. No wonder so many people just pay someone. Painting - what a fucking palava!

    • @THE-AIDEN-PROJECT
      @THE-AIDEN-PROJECT  Рік тому +1

That was second in the list if I didn't like the johnstone's stuff. It's a bit more expensive but lots of decorators recommend it.
I used the dulux satinwood on my last house, much preferred it after having a little try with a water based one which ran like a mofo! I was going to give my woodwork a spray with my graco 9.5 hvlp but haven't chose a paint yet, I think isomat is supposed to be a good brand so may give that a go

@@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT I think woodwork is where the sprayer really earns its keep. You can roll a wall and get a 9/10 finish but woodwork really benefits from the spray finish. I’ve done it in one room vs the rest where I brushed and there’s a definite difference.

Dulux is pretty awful and even their trade paint isn't all that. I recently paid almost £100 for 5 litres of pure white Lakeland clay paint (we have to use clay paints since it's all lime walls and frankly limewash is a ballache and a half) and not all the clay paints that claim to be pure white really are, so we don't have many choices. The wife was shocked but as I pointed out, some years ago I had to get some Dulux trade to match the kitchen in our rented house because someone (my wife!) managed to set fire to the toaster - don't ask. It was about £40 for 2.5 litres and that was 4 years ago, so I'm sure it'll be a bit more now, so yes this stuff is a bit more expensive but it's totally breatheable and goes on pretty well really. We normally use Earthborn clay paints and their eggshell for woodwork (about 54 quid for 2.5 litres delivered, so that is definitely expensive) but I'd rather pay more and get a good finish than buy Dulux which is still expensive for what it is and get a crap finish.

@@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT ah well that's the one room upstairs I've yet to do, but it's research I definitely need to start thinking about. The bathroom is quite big but in the longer term needs totally re-modelling. It has a bath we don't use (electrically heated water, energy prices and the sheer volume of water needed make that pointless) but we are without a shower in that room because reasons and the extractor is nowhere near where the shower is. Going to have to talk to the makers of these paints about bathrooms but I can't really do the whole job in there that we want for a while because it will cost me 10 grand I'm sure to have the plumbing moved, what with the underfloor heating and all, and have the old tiling stripped and the lime plaster re-done, nice new suite and all the other considerations. Just agreed to three and a half grand of custom made oak stable door and frame to replace the shagged out, rotten, single glazed, draughty junk in the kitchen, the roof is being repaired and the chimneys relined plus new cowls and (maybe if I can afford it) a new log burner, and just to get a functioning shower back in the bathroom will no doubt be a couple of grand plus. Remodelling the bathroom is probably quite a way down the list since there's loads of lime plasterwork needs doing downstairs first plus I might start on upgrading windows this year too. I am going to be very, very poor by the end of the year!

@@owl369 I don't unfortunately. I think the thing to take away from this is that the retail paint isn't that good, the trade paint is better but they don't say it's specifically for bathrooms and kitchens. Look for one that has a scrub rating and has the mould resistance or even antibacterial. Failing that go to a specialist paint shop and ask them what is best

I'm in the US, so the brands here are different, but this is what I found. I tried a house brand of Walmart, and Glidden in our house. I would consider both rubbish. I painted the bathroom with Glidden Navajo White Semi-gloss, and it remained tacky for at least a year. My son had a habit of resting his hand on the wall while he was standing at the sink. The paint is gone from that area, and it seems to have been pushed into a roll at the edge of the area. I just did not dry to a hard finish.

You've got great product knowledge there 🙌 my point still stands that it is better to use professional trade paints rather than expensive crap retail paint from Dulux for this type of project. The easycare paint is still rubbish, fancy having something that states it's tough and washable and yet it can't meet the scrub rating classification, and the opacity is still awful
