Mal knew that it could take too long trying to find Simon, with no guarantee of success.

I have a handmade pewter hat pin, which I bought at a local ren faire. It reads, "BIG DAMN HERO". I absolutely love it, and it was the very first bit of Firefly merch I ever bought.

Sometimes practical clothes are more important than stylish clothes. Right after River came back with the hodgeberries she explained precisely what was happening to her. What she said was absolutely correct in every detail. That is a huge hint as to what is happening in future episodes.
This episode of Firefly is Zach Efron's first role. He was 14.

I hear ya, but there are practical clothes that are not in the style of "American Westerns".
I'm just being goofy, I get the aesthetic reasons for it, it's not a real criticism.

Reason is the rich planets have flying cars and laser pistols, but if you can't afford that a horse and regular gun are cheaper and almost as good.

16:50 River isn't talking about her parents. Mal is Dad as he is in charge, gives the orders, and meets out punishment.
I don't think River's parents knew, but they were terrified of losing their position and possibly their freedom if they looked too deep. Think WWII Germany or the Soviet Union cause trouble and you might be deemed the enemy.
They have already stated I believe in the Bushwacked episode that the information on River was classified to the Alliance cruiser. They also showed two men looking for River with hands of blue. Just like the many nations we have today with many layers of law enforcement including special agents to handle classified situations. As a result, you may not have an APB out for River. I believe there is a warrant out for the 2 siblings with no information as to why except it's classified.

I knew it was secretive within the alliance, but didn't realize just how much. I figured there was some shared knowledge at the highest levels in the military about the River situation.
That makes much more sense as to why the Alliance is have this much trouble finding River.
And as for River and Simon's parents, idk they gave me bad vibes, they seemed awfully sus. Lol Being under a tyrannical system though would do that to ya.

    1. Book dying, Simon and River missing. I know which would be my priority.
    2. Also, I tend to agree with you about Simon's parents.

    Inner planets:
Terraformed first, have achieved high tech, very civilized, strong modern infrastructure, rigidly controlled by the Alliance.
The equivalent of the rich cities of the North after the American Civil War, run by rich families.
    Outer Planets:
More recently terraformed, rural farming and ranching the primary means of survival, very limited technology, poor folks very much on their own, original home of the Independents; self-reliant because very little help from the inner planets.
The equivalent of the frontier, the "Wild West", where many poor Southern folks, ex-soldiers of the Confederate army, just trying to eke out a living in hard, dangerous circumstances.
Not an aesthetic choice - a necessity for survival.
Regarding Simon and River - yep, covert; they are wanted by a secret part of the Alliance - we saw in Bushwhacked that the Alliance cruiser captains had very little info on them or on the ship, just "a Firefly", of which there are apparently hundreds, maybe thousands, in the system. And one guy who came close in episode 1 didn't have a chance to report details either. They are looking for two sharp needles in a system full of hay...

I hear what you're saying, but even the fashion becomes stereotypical "American western"? Lol
But as for the Simon River situation that makes a lot more sense as to why the Alliance is having so much trouble.

    • @ernesthakey3396

@@WereintheBasement yeah, the writers wanted to use the fashion to reinforce the parallels - and from a budget standpoint, I think wardrobe was at the bottom of the pecking order in terms of available funds, it wouldn't surprise me if a lot of the wardrobe was acquired through scouring old movie leftovers and thrift shop bargains. 😉 But within the framework of the show, it is also a case of form following function, and the outer planet folks can't afford fancy clothes. Inara can, and we can see how well she dresses; she's definitely from the central planets, I don't think she has any outfits that would match what anyone on the outer planets typically wears. Her clothes no doubt cost a lot more than the simple clothes made of rugged yet inexpensive frontier folks.

I'm just being difficult lol but who knows, maybe there was a huge swing in culture toward "American Western" films. I enjoy the aesthetic of it and it works well with the theme of the show, so it's not really "real" criticism, just me being goofy.

I don't think you understand the difference between these planets. The "western" feel isn't a stylistic choice, it's a necessity. When settlers arrive on a newly terraformed planet, there's nothing but basoc plant life there. It's essentially a rudimentary farming situation. They're decades away from any kind of industrialization. The most valuable commodities are things like chickens, cows, and sheep. These animals can process simple grasses and other resources that humans can't eat or use... into milk, meat, wool, etc. There's no roads or car manufacturing, so they ride horses. There's no factories or office buildings, so you become a trader, a farmer, a blacksmith, etc. Humanity as a whole may have advanced technology, but put them on a new planet with limited resources, and they are right back to this "western" lifestyle until they can build their world into something more advanced.
