Before this show aired, the promotion with the title "The Next Doctor" led people to believe that David Morrissey who played Jackson Lake in this episode would be the next doctor (who had already been chosen but it was kept quiet). David Morrissey was told not to tell anyone that he was the guest star for this episode only. He couldn't even tell his own kids who kept asking "do we have to move to Cardiff?" (where the Doctor Who studio was/is). I thought he was great in this episode and would have made a great doctor. BTW this is the second time he and David Tennant have worked together. They were both in Blackpool, a quirky show that has song/dance numbers. Their characters in Blackpool (an arcade owner& police detective) face off to "These Boots Were Made For Walking". This song/dance number is on UA-cam and it's hilarious.
I just realized (after seeing this episode approximately 437 times) that Jackson, as the Doctor calls the first creature a "timorous beastie". Which is what the Doctor called Rose in "Tooth and Claw".
@alyzu4755 there’s also that moment @4:48 where FauxDoctor says the reverend is “leaving his place of residence for the last time”; a quiet callback to the end of The Girl in the Fireplace.

Actually, I'd better not go on else I'll give too many spoilers away, but there are reasons why I can criticise the others too. The cyberking is a bit silly, but I like the vibes of "The Next Doctor", and Dervla Kirwan in the red dress is an excellent villain, it all looks great, and the Tardis as a balloon is inspired madness.
@paulhammond6978 I agree with almost all of that.... I quite like the steampunk cyberking mobile converting unit.... I don't think its the best of these specials but its the most fun.... The moment that always gets me is with the Doctor's infostamp. It was a beautiful little Xmas present for all the fans who had watched the all the Doctors up until that time
A cool detail I like is that Rosita is a mix of all 3 of the doctor’s companions so far. She has Rose’s name, looks like Martha, and had Donna’s personality.
I wouldn't say that it's specifically Donna's personality, Rosita's personality seems to be all the best traits of the tenth doctors 3 main companions, Rosita shows great bravery and loyalty to "the Doctor" reminiscent of Rose, displays the intelligence, ingenuity and resourcefulness of Martha, and the "am I the only sane person around here" attitude and best friend role of Donna.
I could be misremembering but this episode was the first time the 8th Doctor Paul McGann was officially confirmed as the doctor cause a lot of fans questioned his canonical status in the tv show. He had lots of audios even by this point but he finally was fully counted in the show. Also inside where all the kids are in the cyber king is actually a repurposed torchwood hub set

I always enjoy this one. David Morrissey would have made a great Doctor! When this aired, we knew David would be leaving, but not the name of the actor who would be replacing him. So, this Christmas special - and particularly its title - was a real tease on the part of Russell T Davies! Matt's casting was officially announced a week later. Other people have probably mentioned this, but the specials were partly due to David being away for much of the year, playing Hamlet in an extended run with the Royal Shakespeare Company, and partly to give the new showrunner and Doctor time to prepare for the new era.
I found it a nice touch that "The Next Doctor" managed to find himself a "companion" in Rosita who had connections to all 3 of David Tenant's companions - Got her name from Rose - Got her, shall we say, "complexion" from Martha - Got her no-nonsense / in-your-face attitude from Donna
I believe, although I may be wrong, that the kid playing Jackson Lake's son was also the kid who got his breath back in the Torchwood episode with the circus people.
I was going to point out that something I loved in Classic Who was the way that stories often involved threats to the entire planet, and yet - they would be wrapped up with barely anyone actually being aware of the threat. But then we have the new era which brought us a space ship crashing into Big Ben in its 3rd episode! But, then I remembered one of my favourite lines... Doctor - Do you remember the Zygon gambit, with the Loch Ness Monster? Or the Yeti in the Underground? Companion - The what? Doctor - Your species has the most amazing capacity for self deception, matched only by your ingenuity when trying to destroy itself. So... I can't really argue that Classic Who handled things better... they still dropped in little lines now and then to try explain why people don't know about - oh - say, a massive Cyberman stomping around 1850 London.
'Mercy' is played by Miranda Richardson, who before this episode played a really goofy Elizabeth I in "Blackadder", but since played the witchy stepmother in Tim Burton's "Sleepy Hollow" and Rita Skeeter in the Harry Potter franchise. So, as Elizabeth I, the Queen referred to herself as a 'prince'. Now, in this episode, Mercy refers to herself as 'King'.
By the time this episode aired I had seen all of Classic available. A lot of companions had come & gone, some under tragic circumstances but the loss of Donna was memorable.
There is no paradox if Jackson had actually been another version of The Doctor. In classic Who the current Doctor ran into other regenerations of himself on multiple occasions.
There is a big pattern with those episodes that doesn't happen here, usually the multiple doctors do NOT get along initially, their different personalities clash so much that at least one of them (or all of them) find the others insufferable and they usually spend the first part of the show bickering with each other,The mere fact that the Tenth doctor and Jackson don't start bickering from the moment they set eyes on each other is an early clue, for viewers familiar with multiple-Doctor stories, is a clue that the latter isn't really the Doctor.
Yeah, I'm feeling it too. No show can get you the way Doctor Who gets you. btw, @22:53 "both of them?" You have settled yourself very well and comfy (maybe not the right word concerning Doctor Who adventures) in the Whoniverse. Sweet.
These two Davids starred together in Blackpool, a musical mystery love story which you should definitely watch at some point and play "spot the Doctor Who actor." ...
That line 'and some of them forget me' brought a lump to my throat, even after all this time (and many watches). Russell T Davies wasn't entirely happy with Miss Hartigan's fate in this one. In one of the commentaries he comes up with an alternative end scene for her, which he says he wishes he'd thought of when writing the episode.
