Yes, these trucks look pretty and so lots of unsuspecting people buy them but their quality is horrible and the factory and dealer just give you the run around if you have a problem under warranty. I was a Ford and GM dealership tech and I’d never own either truck. And, almost none of my fellow techs drove them either.

@@hathawaywego not buy a Ford. You are right the warranty should work everywhere. I would have taken it to the purchasing dealership, they made the money on moving the unit. Not only with your purchase, but they also made what some manufacturers call hold back money which is a fee ( up to 10 percent of MSRP in some cases) straight from Ford . If you financed through that dealership then they make money on every payment you make. So they are the ones you need to ream. After my debacle with Ford in 1984, now it was the 80s so I bitched and yelled and made a scene in front of a show room full of customers so they took that Bronco back. Today they would call the cops on you. I never bought another American car again. My Tundra was built in Indiana and my wife's Honda was built in Ohio, so it's not the American worker, it's the American car companies cut quality for profit

It is correct, any Ford dealer can perform warranty work on any Ford product, regardless of where it was purchased. You get brownie points for taking it to the dealership it was purchased from, but it's no big deal. Now I have run into some dealerships love doing warranty work and recalls. Some prefer not to. I even had a dealership owner tell me he didn't understand why some don't. He called it a gravy train. The company reimburses them for the parts and labor. They don't have to worry about bad checks or they do the work customer can't pay. They do the work then customer claims they screwed him over and gets his money back, maybe even takes them to court. Now, one thing is, Ford will say it should only take x amount of time to perform this repair and that's all we will reimburse for. So, the dealership may not want to get into some of the more complicated repairs. If it takes the tech more time than Ford alots, too bad.

You have to remember. You did not buy the truck from Ford ,you bought it from the dealer. The dealer bought it from Ford. That's how it works with every car manufacturer except Tesla. So Ford made their money when the dealer bought the car with their floor plan money

Man, you folks have way more patience than me. If you get it back and if the AC works, I would trade that thing off immediately even if I lost a lot of money. God bless your patience. I had my wife watch these with me and looked at me and said ," that's just like our bronco" I just remembered the AC problems, she reminded me that they couldn't fix the locking hubs either. FORD. Fix Or Repair Daily, or Found On Road Dead. You pick. Oh dealer update, when I graduated college I bought myself a brand new Tran-Am, and the dealership that I bought it from couldn't fix it so I called Pontiac and had my primary dealer for warranty changed to another dealership in the next town. That Pontiac dealership fixed it in two days vs the other keeping it 3 weeks that was in 1981 first year of the OBD1 computers

So sorry to hear this guys. Here in Australia our consumer protection is quite good. It doesn't matter what a Lemon Law states, and it doesn't matter if it's a toaster or a crane, if the purchased product doesn't perform the function for which it was sold or marketed, you get your money back.
Secondly, do not listen to anybody claiming you shouldn't be 'dealer shopping'. This is one of Ford's key marketing claims, customers get great support because the blue oval is everywhere.

Several items come to mind. One: dealer warranty service pays the dealership a lot less money to do the work than if you are paying so they really DON'T want to fix it. Two: It sounds like IF they do have to replace more than the compressor, condenser, and hoses, that means they have to completely take out the entire dashboard to replace the evaporator. That is a very large job taking all day, probably a couple full days work. They do NOT want to tie up a techs time for that long and not get paid for it. Three: If they take out the dash, expect other things not working afterwards, and squeaks and rattles. Four: They may not have a tech that is competent to do that kind of job. Remember many of the techs that work at dealerships don't get paid much at all so all the good techs branch out on their own or work in shops that pay significantly more.

  • @JimmyMakingitwork

Any dealer can repair this issue, they submit the repair documents to Ford for warranty claim.
As far as how well it's diagnosed and repaired, sadly many shops/dealers hire mechanics with little experience since they work cheaper. They think anyone can be a mechanic. Which of course isn't true. Keep in mind that a leak or electrical repair can be done on its own, but a compressor failure sends debris into the system. This requires at least a condenser where most of it gets trapped since it has tiny orifices inside that each act as cooling areas and also catch debris. Then flush the remainder of the system. Replacing hoses and an evaporator (which requires dash removal) isn't required if it's flushed correctly.
The only hold up might be parts availability. The repairs are 1/2 a day to a day at most. Hope this helps.

It makes me sad my dad was retired from Ford and we were a Ford family. I just bought a Toyota today even though I could have received a Ford discount. They don't care about their customers anymore. They just want to sell overpriced trucks. Ford needs a new CEO and a change from the top to the bottom. I pray it works out for you.

Guys you make a good point! The dealer I purchased my ford from I won’t go back to either. Purchased a maint agreement from them so I didn’t have to do my own maint. First time I took it in they said, “No we don’t have your maint agreement on file so here’s your bill!” Got so mad I left. They repainted the front of my truck 3 times when I purchased, and tinted windows multiple times. Paint has peeled off and “life time window tint” is bubbled. Absolutely will never go back for above mentioned issues and unprofessionalism by mgmt! Sure hope they fix your very expensive purpose bought truck.

This is probably the most informative video I've seen you guys make. We understand your frustration level. Once you explained, it makes sense why you ended up at the different dealers. Of course you can go to any ford dealership for service. And I agree with you that each dealership tries to earn future business. You don't know what the future holds as to where you might be. And it's the air conditioner on top. In summer we need air conditioning. On top of that, you paid a lot of Money for your truck and you have a right to have working a/c. This is not an unreasonable request at all. Not in our book anyway. You could pursue legal avenues but I think you might find as long as the dealership is trying to repair the a/c, you won't be able to pursue any legal avenues. Leave your truck at the dealership and call them every day for an update. The dealership will grow tired of the calls and will get tired of seeing the truck not repaired. If after three weeks, contact the local newspaper and ask about running an article on Ford quality when it comes to expensive trucks. Realizing you don't want to make waves, it comes a time that enough becomes enough. Appreciate the new video guys.

Unfortunately it sounds very similar I had an issue with a car with only 2000 miles there was no fix. The way mechanics get paid at dealerships is if they fix it and it the car company doesn’t have a fix,the mechanics won’t try to fix it because he won’t get paid. On my car I found a fix for mine but I am a mechanic.just like you I wanted to use the warranty. I really would like to see a video you taking it to a good independent shop and getting a diagnostic it might cost an hour of labor and peace of mind. Love the scenery in the background during your videos. Good luck!

There is really no excuse for the lack of communication. Unfortunately the pool of experienced service advisors and vehicle technicians is not that large regardless of manufacturer. Dealerships will typically have one "journeyman" level technician with some line techs and aspiring techs that are maybe a year or two off the lube rack. The journeyman usually cherry picks jobs from his/her assigned service advisor. Occasionally the journeyman will have an assistant (these two would be your best hope of having it fixed right the first time). The problem with "flushing" an a/c system is that metal will collect in the receiver drier, condenser, evaporator and simply find it's way back to the new compressor in time unless those components are replaced as well. The condenser and receiver drier are usually not that difficult to replace but the evaporator usually requires the entire dash to be removed.

Apologies for not getting to the end of the video, but I did get as far as the comments section.
What surprises me is that I always believed atrocious customer service was something we specialise in, here in the UK!
I always thought customer service was so much better in the US...
I certainly admire your patience and perseverance in trying to resolve a problem with the A/C in temperatures that would be unimaginable where I live!
By now I would be talking to Ford in very clear terms regarding the utterly shambolic nature of the events surrounding this problem.
Whilst in the UK what we would term as rejecting a new car, is a very difficult process, and perhaps like here, also in the US if you want to reject it, you have to go back to your selling dealer.
Hopefully, following the replacement of the entire system, you can put your problems behind you, and Ford will offer you a good will gesture for all your inconvenience.

This is what I'm picking up is the air conditioning technicians that have been working on the truck are unqualified...taking shortcuts..... Metal particulates in the system says the compressor failed internally and with the tech that the system utilizes, more than one system/component was damaged.... flushing normally works to internally clean the system but the complexity of the new systems..... The fact that they are going to replace the entire system including the lines will fix it..... Sounds like you have a great tech and ford rep working for you now!!!!!!

I am glad you are finally getting your truck fixed. I could not get my RAM 1500 repaired after a hailstorm. Took it to a repair facility highly recommended by the insurance company and an employee working at that shop. They kept it for two months. The roof and sunroof had hail damage and required replacement; the repair shop refused to do paintless dent repair on the roof, just 'had' to be replaced. The shop said, "no roof tops available". This went back and forth for weeks. I called MOPAR and was told that if you need a roof for your RAM, go to a dealership and buy a new truck, there are none. So, I took my truck out of the repair facility and drove it the next day to Ford and bought a gas F250.

The complete replacement is the correct option; any metal particles that are generated will end up in the cooling coil (looks like a radiator in front of the big radiator). I might also suggest marking (not a sharpie, use sand paper, utility knife, file, etc.) as many parts that involve the HVAC system to guarantee that they replace ALL the components. You will get results here, keep going, Ford Attorneys will bury you so not the route I would choose. Best, Scott

Sorry, you do not evacuate an AC system to remove metal fragments. You evacuate to remove and and primarily moisture. To get off metal fragments you flush the system and that would be the refrigerant lines. If you have metal in the system, the flues in todays condensers and evaporators are too small that flushing is ineffective. So the only answer is replace all the major components and flush the lines.

The last issue was water in the tail light. Easy fix. I work in a body shop as a tech and takes 5 minutes. They made it a week long ordeal and the first said it was not covered on warranty. It only had 6k miles and they acted like I was in the wrong without even looking at the truck.
Highly disappointed in fords service. Almost to really have me thinking twice about another ford in the future. I bought this truck to last about 15 years. We will see.

Sorry for all the struggles you have had with this truck. The a/c issue is not Ford specific - it is a universal issue with automotive a/c - the dealership issues are poor business practice. I have been a mechanic for over 50 years and have worked on hundreds of a/c systems. The metal shavings issue has been well known in the industry since the 80's. Currently, all a/c compressor manufacturers refuse to warranty any a/c compressor they sell unless the owner or mechanic also purchases a filter/drier, expansion valve/orifice tube and an a/c condenser and shows evidence of purchasing the flushing chemical to flush out the system hoses and evaporator. In the 90's the problem was so common we could buy an extra a/c filter to add to any a/c system to catch the shavings left behind by a failed compressor. All of this started in the 80's when the design of a/c compressors went from cast iron housings with steel pistons to aluminium housings and pistons with teflon rings. That being said, all of this should have been done in Utah or at least in Washington when you first encountered the issue. I worked for an awesome Ford dealer in the 90's and most of those guys quit during that decade because of the poor products and mismanagement of customer complaints by Ford. Again, sorry for all the frustration you suffered at the hands of incompetence.

As for taking the vehicle back to the selling dealer for warranty is bunk. I have worked for 3 auto manufactures in my lifetime, the sales and service agreement the dealers sign state the regardless of where the vehicle is purchased, they are required to provide warranty service.

Just a goofball idea. Buy a portable indoor AC unit. They work great. Place in back seat floor. They come with duct tubes accordion style. And adjustable window slats. Use your power ports and power cord. Use a plastic drip pan just in case though the units have an internal drip pan. They are loud and will get your cab very cold. Use a remote to turn on and off. This doesn’t fix your problem but if you’re unable to use your truck due to heat it might work. About four or five hundred dollars. Lowe’s sells all of this. Oh and buy a roll of duct tape just in case.

My father built the largest ford dealership in the country. 27 acres of bumper to bumper cars and trucks. New and used. You need to schedule an appointment to meet with the Ford Rep at the dealership. Reps make their rounds on a schedule. The other dealerships don’t have mechanics whom like to work on a warranty rate pay scale for a vehicle that was purchased elsewhere. They didn’t get the sale profit which amounts to the count toward dealer rebates for sales. Lots of money lost and now mechanics Whom work on your truck are working for a greatly reduced rate while working on your truck. That’s the issue. You need to press Ford which has the AG, banks and BBB in their pockets. Ask about the blend door/switch being the issue. An attorney representing you and negotiating with the AG is a viable option that has weight

Update: I know this isn't about me but just took my truck almost 2k miles and the AC blew ice cold without faulter! Replacing the Ac Compressor did the trick and they also replaced the AC expansion valve and evacuated the entire system to get rid of the metal fragments. Sorry, you do not evacuate an AC system to remove metal fragments. You evacuate to remove air and primarily moisture. To get off metal fragments you flush the system and that would be the refrigerant lines. If you have metal in the system, the flues in todays condensers and evaporators are too small that flushing is ineffective. So the only answer is replace all the major components and flush the lines.

Something you may not have considered is that Everytime your truck goes to a dealer to be worked on it will appear on a carfax report. Therefore when you try to trade or sell it will hurt the value of your truck. Know you don't want to hear that but it is a fact. Therefore my advise would be to aggressively pursue a buyback via the lemon law or sue the dealership and go for blood.

I bought a 1990 Ford F150 that developed a clunk every time you would start from a stop. I took it back to the dealer 2 different times and they put grease on the yoke of the drive shaft and that fixed it for about 3K miles then it would start all over again. The third time back to the dealer I found they took the rear differential apart saying that is where the noise is coming from. Couple days later I picked up my truck and it made it a mile and a half to home when it ground the repaired diff. up in to pieces. Back to the shop again and again and again as they added to the problem now they couldn't get it to stop howling. Finally I got a hold of a ford rep who told me to let the dealer try to fix it one more time, if not, I would get a buy back and could buy another truck at dealer cost. By then the 1993s were out so I got a new 93' and that truck was fine. The problem is with the dealership who hires service writers who know nothing about repairing vehicles, and you have mechanics who are just learning. Good mechanics leave dealerships as soon as they can. This is on all manufacturers is they pay about half the money for warranty work so no good mechanic will work for free, so you get the kid who moved up from just changing oil. I have owned many Fords since which all have been great but always buy them used out of warranty so not to have to deal with crappy dealer service. Looking on Google, AC issues plague all 23-24 Superdutys for some reason as AC is a simple system.

A lot of people I spoke to lost money trading their Wagoneer back in losing 7 to 10 grand to get rid of it because of the air condition I found a lemon law lawyer and received all my money back trading money taxes every dime that’s what you need to do to have peace of mind. Dont think just ford has issues. I bought a new silverado where the radio would blare then screen dead, the air conditioner would repeatedly shut off by itself and the windshield wipers would go on and off whenever they felt like it. The selling dealer told me all this my imagination. After about 4500 miles they reprogrammed the radio screen heater system where it worked but still had windshield wipers going on whenever. It got so bad i couldn't stand it to drive it. I bought an extra silverado without the screens to drive just to keep my sanity. Took the original one to courtesy chevrolet in pheonix. They found bent over pin connectors in the main harness that made the wipers go on. It was about 6500 miles before the harness was diagnosed and repaired. Just exhausting. Yes I am keeping both silverados just "in case". Like foghorn leghorn used to say "I keep my feathers numbered for just such an emergency ". These new vehicles have too much crap on them. I guess if i could buy a new 1978 I wouldn't have these issues but obviously it isn't realistic

Wow, what a story. They should have removed the TXV ahead of the evaporator core and plugged the port, pulled the bad compressor out, totally done a system solvent flush with a looping flush machine ( it has multiple redundant filter/driers to capture any particles that are in the system ), install a new TVX with an in-line filter before it ( to prevent an errant particle clogging the TVX ) , then installed the new compressor with the proper oil precharge in it along with a filter /dryer ahead of the compressor, evacuate the system and check that it holds 500 micron of vacuum for at least an hour. Then go ahead and recharge the system with refrigerant.
Those two extra in-line refrigerant filters will capture any metal shavings/chips that might be present along with any other contaminants in the system that the system flush didn't remove. No need the replace the entire A/C system.

The older vehicles without AC had floor vents and cowl vents. There's no comparison between those old vehicles and a modern one where the AC has quit working. It was much easier to drive the old vehicles without AC. You could turn the no draft windows past 90 degrees and open all the vents. Outside air would blow on your legs from the vents vents in the dash windows down and no drafts to blast air on your body. This would be enough in most cases to make driving long trips doable. I've experienced it and know what it's like. I've also been in modern vehicles with broken AC and that's not doable.

I live in Memphis TN and am military. I have purchased many vehicles in other areas and had them serviced in others with no problem. All NON FORD. My Dad was a ford man and had worked for Ford in the late 30’s and 40’s. I tried to buy a new Mustang in 1977 and the dealer tried to hose me over. Several years later just got married and agreed to a price on a new Escort and came back the next day and dealer wouldn’t honor the price. So I went to a Plymouth dealer and bought a Horizon. A couple years went and got a Turbo TBird and the Ford warranty was a joke, so long TBird for a Dodge truck. I have bought many new vehicles over almost 50 years and none have been a Ford because the dealers were scum. I’ve had Ford 350’s and GM, Ram/Dodge. The best out of all the warranty service I’ve had were Dodge/Ram by far. Now I drive an older Dodge 1500 and tow our 19-24 camper with it. 23 years old 5.9 gas stone reliable and simple to work on. I will not buy any new computerized junk or Ford period.

I’m fairly certain that the terms of your warranty do not specify the warranty only applies to service by the selling dealership. There might be a case for breach of warranty here if you’re being told to go back to the originating dealership. I would put this in the hands of an attorney long ago. A big black eye for Ford. Review the Magnuson Moss Warranty Act for possible breach of federal law by Ford. Best of luck!
