As a retired mechanic, I can testify to the dismal state of my former profession.
I'd estimate that 80% of the mechanics now working, are both dishonest and incompetent.
Scotty is one of the few who bucks that tread. He's an old school guy. Great skills,
and solid ethics. If you find a mechanic like Scotty, be thankful, and stay loyal to him or her.

This is another industry destroyed by middle men. Autoshops now a days have service managers and owners who take all the profit from a job and leave the average technician crumbs for their work. This trend of middlemen (aka Contractors) taking all the money from those who actually do the work is destroying industries in the US left and right. Look what brokers have done to trucker salaries, or benefit managers done to pharmacist salaries, or Contractors done to electrician salaries. The list goes on and on.

I agree with you 100%. Now most the mechanics are salesmen trying to scam people because they get commission. There are a few good ones still left and if you are fortunate to find one treat them like Gold because they are life savers.

The best mechanic I ever knew was old enough to be my grandfather. He could troubleshoot an engine by listening to it idle--yes--even the computerized kind with two dozen sensors. He worked fast & cheap. This was important to me as I was a poor, starving newlywed with no "spare" vehicle to get me to work. My parent's van broke down once while they were visiting me. When I told him they were stranded out-of-towners he put them at the front of the line and replaced their broken motor mount before COB. He's retired and probably dead now. I've never found another one like him.

Here in Kentucky, some used car dealers put a notice on their used cars that says, "No Warranty, Sold as is.." Stay away from any car that has that notice on it. Many of their cars are purchased by the dealer at car auctions, some of the auctions are even out of state, so they have to drive them a long way to get them back to their car lot. During that journey, they are going to find out things that are wrong with the vehicle, and try to pass those problems on to a consumer, or take it back to the auction to sucker another used car dealer.
