    The instrument that Danny Carey used was called a Tabla. It’s a membranophone percussion instrument much like a bongo! It’s a very precise instrument, The playing technique is complex and involves extensive use of the fingers and palms in various configurations to create a wide variety of different sounds and rhythms. This song is one of the reasons why Danny Carey is within the top 50 drummers on the planet.

    Tool was my safety blanket throughout high school. They were my Woody and Buzz Lightyear..
    Some context: this album was dedicated and centered around the life and passing of the vocalist's mother. A staunch Christian that never gave up faith after fighting cancer for over 25 years. 10,000 days.
    The monkey reference is a metaphor for humans not having evolved past war and conflict. Clubs are the technology that fool us into believing we've achieved a higher level of existence, but the FIRST thing we do is weaponize technology. We haven't evolved far enough to care for one another.
    The vocalist is an agnostic
    And in all honesty, the amount of metaphors in this record are staggering and spiritually deep.

It's the type of music that you are meant to feel how ever it is that you feel. And after you have listened to the songs enough to know the lyrics, it then makes you think "Is this song one of the songs that they have that is very plain to see what it's about or is it one of their songs that will make me think deeper to find out what they're trying to tell me." That sound/beat is Danny on the drums playing tabla. He has electronic pads to play the sounds he gets from other instruments or simply electronic sounds. He's sick! I believe it's Indian, iirc. Btw, his nickname is Octopus. 😂

  • @rorajoey
    @rorajoey 4 роки тому +4

    "Japanese music or somethin'." Those sound like tabla, which are drums from India. But on this recording it sounds as if they're using a sample. They might be using triggers on an electronic drum pad/kit. From what I can tell, the time signature on most of this song is 11/8, which is also something you don't often hear in Western music. Tool are known for their unusual time signatures.
