    Comfortably Numb is from the album The Wall. It is a theme album where the protagonist slowly succumbs to neurosis. Pink Floyd didn't make 3-5 minute songs for radio play. They made theme albums. Each song can appreciated individually of course, but they are really intended to be consumed as a whole. If you have an inclination to do a full album review, I would encourage you to try Dark Side of the Moon as a starter.

      Yeah, that is what being “Comfortably Numb” is about. Coming to an apathetic acceptance that the life that you wanted and hoped for did not in many or all ways turn out. How do you grieve that? How do you let go? The first step is to become Comfortably Numb.
      But make no mistake that Pink’s breakdown in the movie for this album is no mistake. Eventually one has to face the facts, and deal with it. That is the test - most of us reconcile with those things eventually and become grateful for what we DO have, and the rest… I don’t know. If I had to guess, the rest stay numb or maybe angry for the rest of their natural lives, or, they punch their time card early.

    Hey Shaq.
    I love that you gave this a spin.
    The Wall album is a story based in the life of the singer. Tragedy and redemption.
    Lost his dad in the war, had a crazy controlling mother, was abused by a crazy teacher.
    His mom teaches him to distrust people and encourages him to build a wall around himself for protection from being hurt.
    His life becomes about wild women and heavy drugs and being a rockstar until he is lost and isolated behind The Wall.
    The second half of the album is him trying to break out, “Is there anybody out there?”
    Comfortably Numb tells about him being so drugged up he can’t go on stage for a concert. So doctor feel good shoots him full of junk to get him in good enough shape to perform.
    Listen to the whole album front to back and read the words as you go.
    It’ll blow your mind.
    Crazy deep.
    Listening to this album growing up is what led me to become a social worker and therapist for at risk youth.
    You’ll dig it the most.

One thing I did that some people think is weak is talking to a professional. He got me into these groups like family, anger, stress, and on and on. It taught me things that my parents didn't. That was a big break through also I picked up a camera and in 8 years I had my first gallery show. I also started guitar lessons. The camera was much easier the thing is get a hobby. If you were like me you are worried about withdrawal. Hospitals do a good job at that....know that you matter If not to anyone else you do to me. Come on guys, I love that solo but the absolute best? Nah...It's basically a blues scale if I'm not mistaken. As a guitar player myself I always respected David's emotional playing. His licks have meaning in the song and aren't disconnected from it. I just wish he'd learn some arpeggios, tapping etc. I know it's way before that way of playing but I miss this. Still, a legendary player and I always feel his solos deeply.

    "In an interview released in the 80s, Waters said that much of the song comes from something that really happened one evening when, in order to allow him to perform in Philadelphia, the doctor gave him a sedative for a severe stomach ache, which had probably caused by nerves. On the stage, his hands were numb and his vision blurred, but none of this derailed the crowd, who continued to dance and sing. And it was out of this that one of the main themes of The Wall came about: the disconnect between the public and the band.
    Of course, there could be various interpretations of this. In a metaphorical sense, it could mean that the protagonist has been given a ‘fix’ in order that he can adequately address his life, society and relationships, which have become nothing more than a show to him. Society doesn’t care about the effects of drugs, just so long as they serve their purpose.
    The main theme is the distance between our minds and the perception of reality because of artificial relief. In other words, we may not suffer, but that does not make us alive; escaping from life and its problems actually deprives us of something. This is the meaning of the song: life is out there; I prefer to face it and let it hurt me, than lose all sense of feeling.
    Depression, in Comfortably Numb, is just a grey waiting room, where everything is reminiscent of death. The absence of pain is not happiness. The doctor in the lyrics takes away the pain to get the show going, but it doesn’t work. It only increases the distance, and even the voice on the record sounds more distant.
    Our society is based on productivity and success, so reducing our pain or level of humanity to achieve positive results is seen as beneficial. But the risk is that we forget that the world of feelings, pain, searching, time for ourselves - even fatigue - represents our whole lives. And it keeps us in touch with reality."

    • @maikeru01
      @maikeru01 5 років тому +2

      Depression is usually a reaction to a reaction. There is something you know is wrong that you aren't saying. Or there is something you are doing that you know is wrong but you have rationalized it. (I'm not hurting anyone) or (it's not illegal) or (what I do in private is no one's business) but your subconscious knows the truth. Usually people have a bad relationship with their parents and don't want to sit down and talk about it. Something like that. It'll help if you do though. I know from personal experience. Had a long talk with them about everything that bothers me, the elephant in the room. I'm tired of wasting energy on shame. Tired of being sarcastic and bitter. Told my bosses I hate the job and told them what about that is their fault. Told my sister I don't even know her. Stopped my bad habits. Have to tell you, it's not quite super powers, but I can sleep at night now at least. I don't have awkward silences in conversation anymore. I don't give a single fuck what people think of me. I know right from wrong. I held onto my anger for almost 25 years. Damn near ate me alive. Better late than never, friend. After years of assuming it was too expensive, I found out through my insurance seeing a psychologist was like 30 bucks. Btw if you stay depressed eventually your brain function starts to decline significantly. I was getting dull, forgetful, unable to multitask, focus... This sounding familiar? Turns out dullard is a medical term. Good luck and all for help.

      "The Wall"by Pink Floyd is a collection of music and video that tells a story.
      It's Brilliant. A bit of a trip, but when you watch it(I've watched it soo many times)you get a deeper understanding of what the objects and lyrics represent.
      I have read it's based on the story of Roger Waters life.
      I loved your reaction to this amazingly unique song.

    You have plunged into a rabbit hole from which you will never return friend. Pink Floyd create concept album, meaning that they are to be listened to in their entirety; and so I would not recommend an individual song, but rather send you to the “Dark Side of the Moon” album, which demands a full album reaction. Trust me Shaq, it is worth it. Keep up the good work!

    You'd have to watch the movie, bro. My son was born the same year you were, and I brought him up on all the classics. Then, one day, I saw the movie coming on on a cable channel. I called my son downstairs and said, watch this, he was 14. At a point in the movie, things just started becoming parts of the wall. He looked back at me and flatly said, "everything becomes the wall". I cried, I've never been so proud.

    Not as a reaction but to fully understand the album "The Wall" you may want to watch the movie 'the Wall'
    Side note: watch the movie 'wizard of oz' on mute while listening to the album 'dark side of the moon' on repeat. Start the first track after the 2nd roar of the MGM Grand Lion. You'll be amazed by the synchronized message of the lyrics to the visuals of the movie.

      It's 3rd lions roar, but you are absolutely right about 'Dark Side of the Rainbow' the syncing of 'Dark Side of the Moon' to 'The Wizard of Oz'. Some of my favorites lines from that are;
      When the good witch and bad witch are in the same scene for the first time "which is which and who is who"
      When Dorothy falls into the pig pen "balanced on the biggest wave" then she falls and the music tumbles down a hole.
      When Dorothy gets picked up by the tornado, the song 'On the Run' starts and the beautiful voice of the woman going 'oooow ooow ooooo...' syncs up to Dorothy's experience in the tornado.
      And best of all, when Dorothy opens the door to Oz and the film goes from black and white to color, the song money plays, and the timing is so phenomenal. The first thing you hear is the sound of the cash register, then the money noises. The reason this is my favorite is because at the time of it release 'The Wizard of Oz' was the most expensive movie ever created because of the process to colorize it.
      The cover of the album, a ray of light going through a prism to create a rainbow is also a fantastic nod to the film. The cover being mostly black and white, going through the prism, then the rainbow, which we all know as the song 'Some Where Over the Rainbow'.
      If anybody decides to watch this, I would recommend looking up more of the amazing connections between movie and the album. The first time I watched it, I missed 3/4 of what Pink Floyd had done.
