    Comfortably Numb is from the album The Wall. It is a theme album where the protagonist slowly succumbs to neurosis. Pink Floyd didn't make 3-5 minute songs for radio play. They made theme albums. Each song can appreciated individually of course, but they are really intended to be consumed as a whole. If you have an inclination to do a full album review, I would encourage you to try Dark Side of the Moon as a starter.

One thing I did that some people think is weak is talking to a professional. He got me into these groups like family, anger, stress, and on and on. It taught me things that my parents didn't. That was a big break through also I picked up a camera and in 8 years I had my first gallery show. I also started guitar lessons. The camera was much easier the thing is get a hobby. If you were like me you are worried about withdrawal. Hospitals do a good job at that....know that you matter If not to anyone else you do to me. Hey Shaq.
    I love that you gave this a spin.
    The Wall album is a story based in the life of the singer. Tragedy and redemption.
    Lost his dad in the war, had a crazy controlling mother, was abused by a crazy teacher.
    His mom teaches him to distrust people and encourages him to build a wall around himself for protection from being hurt.
    His life becomes about wild women and heavy drugs and being a rockstar until he is lost and isolated behind The Wall.
    The second half of the album is him trying to break out, “Is there anybody out there?”
    Comfortably Numb tells about him being so drugged up he can’t go on stage for a concert. So doctor feel good shoots him full of junk to get him in good enough shape to perform.
    Listen to the whole album front to back and read the words as you go.
    It’ll blow your mind.
    Crazy deep.
    Listening to this album growing up is what led me to become a social worker and therapist for at risk youth.
    You’ll dig it the most.

      Come on guys, I love that solo but the absolute best? Nah...It's basically a blues scale if I'm not mistaken. As a guitar player myself I always respected David's emotional playing. His licks have meaning in the song and aren't disconnected from it. I just wish he'd learn some arpeggios, tapping etc. I know it's way before that way of playing but I miss this. Still, a legendary player and I always feel his solos deeply.

    The story behind this song is that there is a Musician named Pink who is going insane and is deeply depressed, and has built a “wall” around him separating him from society. The creepy voice is his band manager coming into his room and finding him in a drug induced coma/ flash back to his childhood. The “pin prick” is the band manager giving him a shot of something, probably adrenaline to get him out of it, so he can go on with his show. The message of it is that the manager doesn’t care about him he just wants him to play the show. “The child is grown, the dream is gone.” Is a nod to the previous songs in the album, and how he was in the flashbacks of his horrible childhood. All in all, you’re just another Brick in the wall.

    • @gregoryrader1537
      @gregoryrader1537 4 роки тому +27

      Where did you get all that from? Because that's not true. This song was written by Roger Waters based on his personal experience with physical issues going back to childhood. That stuff you are saying doesn't even makes sense. I saw an interview with Roger Waters, founding member of Pink Floyd.

    • @kadephillips576
      @kadephillips576 4 роки тому +37

      Gregory Rader no he’s definitely right. You can watch the movie made by Floyd, it’s an expression of his real life through the character of pink

    • @YourMom-ux8uq
      @YourMom-ux8uq 4 роки тому +13

      Gregory Rader yeah I know it was written by Rodger waters, I own the album his name is everywhere on it😂 it’s not direct real experiences that he had, but similar ones that he experienced through struggled with depression and mental health that Rodger had while going through a rough patch in the band between him and the rest of the band mates (David Gilmour, Nick Mason, Richard Wright, in case you thought I didn’t know who they were.) in one of the interviews you are talking about, he says that he had a horrible concert, where he even spit on a fan, and in that moment he just wanted to build a wall between him and everyone else, which gave him the idea for the album. His childhood experiences and adulthood experienced fueled this album for sure, but I was talking about the story it was telling, which you can see if you watch the movie.

    • @YourMom-ux8uq
      @YourMom-ux8uq 4 роки тому +9

      Gregory Rader also, Rodger Waters didn’t make Pink Floyd by himself, even tho he seems to think he did. Pink Floyd never would have even happened if it wasn’t for Syd Barrett, Rick Wright and Nick Mason.

    "In an interview released in the 80s, Waters said that much of the song comes from something that really happened one evening when, in order to allow him to perform in Philadelphia, the doctor gave him a sedative for a severe stomach ache, which had probably caused by nerves. On the stage, his hands were numb and his vision blurred, but none of this derailed the crowd, who continued to dance and sing. And it was out of this that one of the main themes of The Wall came about: the disconnect between the public and the band.
    Of course, there could be various interpretations of this. In a metaphorical sense, it could mean that the protagonist has been given a ‘fix’ in order that he can adequately address his life, society and relationships, which have become nothing more than a show to him. Society doesn’t care about the effects of drugs, just so long as they serve their purpose.
    The main theme is the distance between our minds and the perception of reality because of artificial relief. In other words, we may not suffer, but that does not make us alive; escaping from life and its problems actually deprives us of something. This is the meaning of the song: life is out there; I prefer to face it and let it hurt me, than lose all sense of feeling.
    Depression, in Comfortably Numb, is just a grey waiting room, where everything is reminiscent of death. The absence of pain is not happiness. The doctor in the lyrics takes away the pain to get the show going, but it doesn’t work. It only increases the distance, and even the voice on the record sounds more distant.
    Our society is based on productivity and success, so reducing our pain or level of humanity to achieve positive results is seen as beneficial. But the risk is that we forget that the world of feelings, pain, searching, time for ourselves - even fatigue - represents our whole lives. And it keeps us in touch with reality."

When I was a teenager and in a very dark (suicidal) place, I listened to The Wall everyday for months. It got me through. I’m now 47 and love and appreciate life so much. It’s hard, fuck yah it is, but every pain and hardship contains love and beauty. The Wall is a masterpiece, and it’s awesome to see people still discovering it!

    When l was a child l caught a fleeting glimpse out of the corner of my eye
    I turned to look but it was gone
    I cannot put my finger on it now
    The child is grown
    The dream is gone
    I have become comfortably numb
    I think most everyone at some time in their lives mourns the joy and simplicity of their childhood mind and longs to return to it. Its my belief that the younger you are, the clearer your memory is of the place of your origin which imho is heaven. That's the feeling you have as a small child. This verse of the song put that into words for me and is in my mind a great explanation of the peace I felt as a child. Many people, unfortunately turn to drugs to achieve a false sense of this peace that eventually brings about their ruin.

At a young age you can still easily understand basic emotional pain, like feeling sad about having your toys taken away or whatever. But your beain isn't likely developed to a point where you can understand issues like climate change, or the overall gravity of the pain that an issue like climate change causes.

    • @maikeru01
      @maikeru01 4 роки тому +2

      Depression is usually a reaction to a reaction. There is something you know is wrong that you aren't saying. Or there is something you are doing that you know is wrong but you have rationalized it. (I'm not hurting anyone) or (it's not illegal) or (what I do in private is no one's business) but your subconscious knows the truth. Usually people have a bad relationship with their parents and don't want to sit down and talk about it. Something like that. It'll help if you do though. I know from personal experience. Had a long talk with them about everything that bothers me, the elephant in the room. I'm tired of wasting energy on shame. Tired of being sarcastic and bitter. Told my bosses I hate the job and told them what about that is their fault. Told my sister I don't even know her. Stopped my bad habits. Have to tell you, it's not quite super powers, but I can sleep at night now at least. I don't have awkward silences in conversation anymore. I don't give a single fuck what people think of me. I know right from wrong. I held onto my anger for almost 25 years. Damn near ate me alive. Better late than never, friend. After years of assuming it was too expensive, I found out through my insurance seeing a psychologist was like 30 bucks. Btw if you stay depressed eventually your brain function starts to decline significantly. I was getting dull, forgetful, unable to multitask, focus... This sounding familiar? Turns out dullard is a medical term. Good luck and all for help.

    The lyrics are about what he felt like as a child when he was sick with a fever. As an adult, he got that feeling again sometimes, entering a state of delirium, where he felt detached from reality.
    This whole song is actually based on a true story from when Roger got sick (from hepatitis which was undiagnosed prior to the concert) before his show in Philadelphia in 1977. The Doctor injected him with some form of tranquilizer to enable him to perform the show. These tranquilizers made him feel comfortably numb..

I have become comfortably numb." Yeah, those are some bomb lyrics. There is no way to hear this song too many times.

    the person is having a bad drug trip and needs to be stabilized so he can get on stage to play.... the 2 voices in the song are 1-the person that's trying to stabilize the guy on the bad trip (can you hear me? is there anybody home?" 2-second voice (there is no pain) with the symphonic background is all taking place inside of the head of the man who is on the trip.

    Pink Floyd albums are meant to be consumed as a whole. Each song is a single part of a story. Comfortably Numb is in the middle of the story. When he is drugged out and still forced to perform on stage.
    And let me add my kudo's to you for stepping out of your comfort zone and trying rock.
