Paul Simon made a statement that he had trouble concentrating while playing his guitar and writing music because of distractions. He stated that the world was obsessed with TV (neon god they made) and the world was constantly changing for the worse. He said that he would cut the lights out in his room but a street light would shine in and there would be no darkness. He mentioned in an interview that he would go to his bathroom, turn the lights off and turn on the faucet water to drown out any other sounds around him. He stated that it was his relaxation place to sing and play guitar in the dark. He said that he would say, hello darkness my old friend, every time he cut the lights out. He also mentions that little things about that bathroom was referenced in a diffrent way in the song. He said that the water running sounded like rain and that the tile had a cobblestone fill to it. He also said that the bathroom echoed when he played guitar and sung. He mentioned that his parents would not listen to him and paid him no attention. They would watch TV and would ignore one another including him. He stated in an interview that he wrote the song at 21 and it was a reflection on his inability to concentrate due to a changing world and his loneliness.
Didn't he say that he had the original idea for the song when he had a dream in which he saw a giant crowd of people worshiping a neon sign or something?
Not sure on that, but it wouldn't surprise me. I do know he was living at home, fresh out of college and was working in his first job in music. He worked for a company who took other writers songs and sold them to record labels. He stated that that part of they lyrics to sound of silence was about these songs. That basically people wrote these songs and record companies would not want them or either put it with the wrong melody and it sucked so bad no one cared to listen to it. Simon had a really complex mind.
This is exactly right. I wrote a comment on another thread and said the same before I read yours. Amazing how it's not a complicated story. It is just amazing how we are still doing this.
This song is dedicated to you. Its dedicated to me. It's a dedication to EVERYONE. That's why it's so powerful. When we do not come together as a people, to share our thoughts, our feelings, our overall humanity with one another... we are left with silence. And as he says, silence like a cancer grows. Unless we set aside whatever it is that keeps us "silent", we will never create "music" together. We will never live in harmony. The neon god is the media, technology, consumer market, ect- basically anything that SEEMS like a way to bring people together. But think about how many times you log into facebook and see posts portraying negativity amongst us, think about how many times youd rather be glued to your phone or computer rather than conversing face to face with some one... and the consumer market PUSHES for these things because they dont care if it brings people together or tears them apart- they care about one thing... and that is that you BUY BUY BUY so they become rich. Someone else in the comments wrote that Simon and Garfunkel originally wrote this song as a warning and Disturbed brought it back in their rendition as a statement to tell us it was ignored. I agree. And I think most people deep down agree- and that's why it moves us so much. The phrase "come together" sometimes sounds cliche but it's an EXTREMELY important. We are all brothers and sisters. We are all human. (Sorry for the rant 🤣 I just love the message of this song and how it was covered by them)
@@timhosler6759 I think the real beauty in this song is that there are many ways to interpret it. It can means something different to every person that hears it.

Smartphones didn’t exist when this song was written, but Simon and Garfunkle saw the future the world was heading for. Crazy how 54 years after a song was written, it can have even more relevance than when it was originally released.
Art is eternal because it speaks to something in each of us and will always be relevant. The old literature and novels were considered great because the way they laid bare the human soul in all it's flaws and beauty. This song will never lose its power. It will be relevant forever.

I can't think of a better way for different cultures to get to know eachother better than listening to eachothers music. And when ppl finally understand eachother, their isnt anything to be afraid of anymore. So thank you bro. You're a genius.
Thanks guys. I'm just calling it like it is. This guy.... I swear. I've never seen anyone so enthusiastic about learning more about his brother across the street. I pray one day we can all be as thrilled as this man to know eachother and embrace eachothers differences and strive to understand one another. Cause at the end of the day, we are all here together sharing 1 world. It's getting smaller and smaller with every passing year. And as our worlds get closer and closer to eachother, I pray that we can look across at eachother without fear or hatred or malice and understand that we are one family. I yield back my time.
Just found this may help explain some: Garfunkel once summed up the song's meaning as "the inability of people to communicate with each other, not particularly internationally but especially emotionally, so what you see around you are people unable to love each other."
Eminem: *Dannn dan dan. Dannn dan dan. Dannn dan dan. Dannn dan dan. Jesus back...* Simon and Garfunkel: *People talking without speaking People hearing without listening People writing songs that voices never share And no one dared Disturb the sound of silence* I don't depreciate Em, don't get me wrong, but he mostly says WHAT HE THINK OF - stright forward. Meanwhile S&G used metaphore after metaphore. You have to REALLY *listen to* this song to grab it's meaning. Not only HEAR it. 🥰
Because unlike most rap these rock anthem songs or songs that have deep meaning you need the lyrics to fully see and grasp the message. It's not like just do a song and just saying here do this or don't do that. It's written like a story you need to fully understand what's being said to get the whole story.

I watch you listen to, study, and appreciate this work of art. Mind you this is the 8th time I've heard this song tonight alone...But I watch you and can't help appreciate the shit out of you. That's the beauty of art though. What means something to someone can mean something else to others. My favorite alternate take on a song is Boys In The Hood by Dynamite Hack. They re-do it in the most posh upper class white tone they can muster.
As you said. They gave an old song life. I would add not just life but they gave it a soul. Things more relevant to today. I read in a diff comment the original was a warning and this was more like rage for not heading the warning

Neon God. People worshiping technology, becoming increasingly disconnected from each other. Which is crazy when you consider the song was written in the 60's, and today it's more relevant than ever. People with their faces in their cell phones, tweeting and facebooking instead of actually talking to each other. Sounds of Silence, bro. Silence between us. See it happen every day.
@John Nicodemus "The original was a warning that largely went unheeded". Exactly, people were ignoring each other then, and has exponentially grown since then, people hearing without listening. This song was more prophetic than Simon and Garfunkel could have ever imagined, yet in a way, they saw it coming.
George Orwell tried to warn of this in his book “1984”, and he was long before Simon & Garfunkle. They said then that when the government took all our privacy and freedom it wouldn’t be forced on us, it would be something we embraced and thought we couldn’t live without: that’s our modern technologies! How many people do you know that allow themselves to be without their smartphone?
I go to my coffee break at work, one old guy listening to the news on the radio.... four 20'ish year olds staring in to their phones, each giggling to themselves. No one talking, so I may as well just put my mp3 earplugs in.... What a sad disconnected world.
That fear went unfounded. Still a good song though. You all THINK people don’t talk to each other much in today’s day and age simply because you are looking for the excuse to say it without actually looking for the evidence to support the opposite. There is no problem with people interacting with each other despite how much you wish to cling to that misinformation.
@@wowitsfrostygames155 Glad to see this comment. There's nothing new or prophetic about complaining about the way technology is changing the world. It's as old as technology. This is by far the most significant reaction you have ever done. Our world is living testament to this song. We are so far apart as humans that we cannot hear each other. We will destroy humanity.
A fair point. I would also say it has some of the worst. The guys who know nothing but power chords, can't sing to save their lives, and just murder a drum set. I suppose the same can be said of most genres though.
The part about the original that'll freak you out : this was back in the seventies, the internet and smart phone didnt exist yet. So it is kinda prophetic when you think about it.
Then, they were warning about television, in very much a 1984 way; which is even more relevant today. People seeing and hearing without listening and looking for themselves. NOW, it's a condemnation for cell phones; the neon God we've made, how people keep their heads bowed and locked to it..... praying to their new neon God
The Simon and Garfunkel version is very mellow but just as powerful. Paul Simon, after he heard their version, wrote to them to say how much he loved their version. High praise indeed.
I don't know about that. The original sounds like a fairly upbeat folk song to me. I never thought the way Simon and Garfunkel sang the song fit the lyrics at all. I much prefer the Disturbed version.
Simon and Garfunkel’s original version is a folk song, which was their style and more suited to the times. I grew up listening to the original and I like Simone and Garfunkel and their version but I always felt something was missing. Disturbed’s cover found that something and I, personally prefer it over the original version. When I first heard Disturbed’s cover of the song I did not know who they were as I am not a heavy metal fan but I loved it! Even though I have read many different explanations of the lyrics, and heard different covers, Disturbed’s cover of this song will mean and affect something different in everyone based on their life experiences. It is that powerful. My all time favourite version without a doubt.
JoAnna Black The lyrics are the same in both. The lyrics are not mismatched if one understands them. Although there is some changes between the 2 versions the basic melody is the same. Disturbed’s version is more powerful because of how it is done, which is why it is affecting people the way it is. The original is less demanding. More mellow. Beautiful but not as powerful as the new version. The new version makes one feel the music and the words. Make one want to hear the words and see the music. Not sure if that makes any sense or not. Lol
I'm talking about the stylistic difference. Folk that is more upbeat vs this heavy handed dramatic version. I like the folk version better because the feeling of the music and the lyrics doesn't match.
you are correct , it was a dedication to someone , everyone of us on this earth . We did not get the first warning . we need to listen close too this one
I've never heard of Disturbed until now. He managed to make me love this version more than the original. It is truly a timeless song, even more, meaningful today than when it was written. Blown away.
5:08 Shaq: "Bro. Ya'll ain't fidden to tell me this ain't dedicated to nobody bro." Oh, it's dedicated to someone braddah. You can believe dat. It's dedicated to everyone.
I've learned that David Draiman and Disturbed address depression, addiction and suicide during every concert, performance offering support and understanding. They are one of the most popular, loved bands of our time! ❤❤❤😊
For me, this song is about what happens when we are disconnected from each other - we lose the ability to truly hear each other and get caught up in chasing 'neon gods' of artificiality. Simon and Garfunkel's version always felt more wistful and melancholy (you should hear it, if only to know the source material, plus they were awesome). But I love the raw power of Disturbed's version, you can feel the emotions.
He topped this studio performance live on Conan O'Brien. I've watched it literally over a hundred times and it's one of the single greatest human performances I've ever had the privilege of witnessing.
NeverAStraightAnswer facts. He’s got a background in opera. There’s no other way this could have been performed live and been even more impactful than a well produced music video.
My 72 year old Mother (who was very British) heard this song . It brought her to tears. Literally.. She listened to it almost daily until the day she peacefully passed away. She loved it. I played her other Disturbed tunes, I don't think I ever convinced her it was same band 😆
"Talking without speaking" as the deeper meaning of people talking about things that are so frivolous, nothing real or deep or connective with anotjer, just superficial things. And "hearing without listening" as the deeper meaning of...even when someone "does" say something of meaning, trying to connect to something real, no one 'hears' them and what they are really saying. They hear the words and react without feeling what the person really meant. For instance when someone is getting bullied and feeling so alone...so many of them reach out, but no one really hears them, then after they have passed on, realize all the times the person tried reaching out to them and no one really heard what they were trying to say. Most people live on the surface of existence, not really "connecting" to anything or anyone around them. That is a huge way that technology has hurt our society. We are too in our phones. We need to put them down and make real human connection with each other. THAT is what makes this life worth living. At the end of our life...it will be the ONLY thing that matters...our connections with the people in our lives. Too many dont realize that until faced with it. There is NOTHING in this world that can bring more joy than a deeply honest connection to another living soul or souls. You know how when a room is so quiet that it actually makes a white noise kind of sound in your head...that is the sound of silence. When nothing is real and connecting to our souls...that sound is deafening.
Loved your reaction, because it was a truly honest reaction, and the story behind this song simplified, is that humans are slowly slipping away from what should be important, which is love one another, speak truth, listen for messages, and if you have a song in your heart, no matter what the content, you must share it!!!!! This is a beautiful cover, and thank you for your reaction X0

They would watch TV and would ignore one another including him. He stated in an interview that he wrote the song at 21 and it was a reflection on his inability to concentrate due to a changing world and his loneliness.
I didn't know all of that. That is so sad. Thank you for the information.
TIL, and I'm in my 40s. Huh.
This is exactly right. I wrote a comment on another thread and said the same before I read yours. Amazing how it's not a complicated story. It is just amazing how we are still doing this.
We all need to take a moment and appreciate David Draiman's voice and what he did for this cover. Gives you straight up chills
dave mullin God trembles when that man puts lungs to mic
One of the greatest voices in music...in my humble opinion
Absolutely! His voice has a crazy range, I live how much control he can have, and his other songs prove it
It proves that through all the screaming the man can sing when he wants to
dave mullin it’s such a strong powerful voice.
(Sorry for the rant 🤣 I just love the message of this song and how it was covered by them)
You couldn't have Express yourself any better. Thanks for that
That was a perfect summary of this song. Absolutely perfect!
I thought it was a song referring to Hiroshima. The neon God referenced in the song is the atom bomb. Silence is death.

@@CharleneRoozREa lot of people now have never heard of Simon and Garfunkel and think that this is the first iteration of this song. Less more know that this song was recorded while they were just chilling in the studio while recording and the manager told them that it was going on the record.
And this is the best description between the two versions I’ve EVER read. 100%
Smartphones didn’t exist when this song was written, but Simon and Garfunkle saw the future the world was heading for. Crazy how 54 years after a song was written, it can have even more relevance than when it was originally released.
And now the majority of people experiencing these videos are doing so on smartphones... so ironic, amazing.
Art is eternal because it speaks to something in each of us and will always be relevant. The old literature and novels were considered great because the way they laid bare the human soul in all it's flaws and beauty. This song will never lose its power. It will be relevant forever.

I don't depreciate Em, don't get me wrong, but he mostly says WHAT HE THINK OF - stright forward. Meanwhile S&G used metaphore after metaphore. You have to REALLY *listen to* this song to grab it's meaning. Not only HEAR it. 🥰
Its amazing how that works
Because unlike most rap these rock anthem songs or songs that have deep meaning you need the lyrics to fully see and grasp the message. It's not like just do a song and just saying here do this or don't do that. It's written like a story you need to fully understand what's being said to get the whole story.

LittleLady00 nope
People are communicating more than ever now so that doesn't really add up...
No they are not......we're just typing responses like we are doing here. This is about talking....face to face...listening...hearing....reacting......connecting....... We've lost that skill. Now we just shout at each other, calling each other names, yelling in sentences....f this, f that, f you, f that. We're taking a slippery slope down, not up.

It is called 'Swinging Through Tree's'
I usually dislike covers by anyone because nothing is as good as the original but disturbed did a phenomenal job on this one
@@Trevor21230 David has also stated the way they did this song was the way he was trained to sing and he did something like 16 takes after they had been working all day before he was satisfied because the message is so powerful and relevant to the world today.

The part about the original that'll freak you out : this was back in the seventies, the internet and smart phone didnt exist yet. So it is kinda prophetic when you think about it.
Prophetic? Naa, humans just rarely learn from the past. What was true then is still true now. Lesson learned: 0
60s not 70s my guy.
Time travel confirmed
Prophetic is accurate, the lyrics are based on a dream one of them had and couldn’t understand
I feel like the mismatched lyrics and style of the original makes it hit home harder when you actually pay attention to the lyrics

@@kratosGOW my brain just fried in 0.20 sec
@@kratosGOW I was just about to say the same but his name is NOT Satan. HIS name is Lucifer.
@@mattm402
He has many names, but sure.
@@kratosGOW Yep.
Paul Simon wrote this when he was around 22 years old back in 1963-1964
the original from Simon and Garfunkel is one of my fav songs of all time , and i feel this cover is one of the best covers to any songs ever
xcross20 I hope he does react to the original.
I agree. I put it in a tie with NIN's Hurt by Johnny Cash.
@@th3paink1ller that song is awesome too, it get on my feelings cuz I'm a wrestling fan and when Eddie guerrero pass away that's the song they play on his video tribute sad but awesome
Man you're the first person I've seen who really pulls the words apart to understand what S&G were trying to say.
David Draiman is classically trained…he’s a disciplined sober heavy metal artist for over 30 years…. AMAZING !!
You need to hear the live version from Conan..❤
Paul Simon was a true poet of course, and this cover was a rare improvement on perfection
Riga Fraction true. The original was amazing. This version is chill-inducing. One of the few times the cover is better even than the originL.
@@jellybeansbud3610 I don't know that this cover is necessarily "better", but it did the original justice with a modern feel to it.
This and hurt
Riga Fraction this is not better. Simon and Garfunkel’s version would make your skin crawl. This doesn’t. It ain’t bad, but it ain’t better.
Listen to both versions...and think of what was going on in those eras in which this song was performed. S&G were more folksy and upbeat. This version is more profound and puts the lyrics into great view. This song would not be possible if it weren’t for Paul Simon’s brilliant songwriting.
It's hauntingly beautiful 💫
I still can’t believe I heard this live. I will never forget this experience
The opening line always had a resonance with me. "Hello Darkness, my old friend. I've come to talk with you again." Yeah - we are very well acquainted.
I hope Shaq talked to his momma or an older relative about The Sound Of Silence because it means different things to different generation.
Please do the original too! It's a whole different vibe! (simon and garfunkel)
Tanz Loid 100% agree
Dude for real, maybe one of the best reactions to this song EVER! You're right, it's deep as hell.
You should look up disturbed sound of silence. In the Conan O'Brien show. He did it live and it was amazing!
Yes! Please please please. It's the best ever.
he was sick that day too. amazing performance.
YES!
Yes I agree it's amazing!!
Yo FR I’ve watched that about a thousand times 🔥
"...the words of the prophets are written on the subway walls, and tenement halls..." my favorite Paul Simon lyrics.
My favorite as well.....
Me too. Always seems to be overlooked.
This is a cover. The original has a very different vibe but both are haunting
Eva Levy - hi Eva! I actually wrote a blog post on the differences between the 2 and how the song is timeless. You might enjoy! Have a great night! www.nicstory.wordpress.com
In it’s debut, it was written about television. Today it reflects cell phones. 50 years have passed since it was written. This is the hallmark of a truly gifted songwriter as it continues to be relevant with the passing of time.
5:08 he paused it right before liftoff
He has no idea what's coming.
Was thinking the same thing. Buckle up Shaq
Noticed that too 😂
Exactly
Your reactions to this made me so happy 😂 love seeing people find joy in music.
I gotta say he's probably one of the best. Him and simba
Exactly
You are a precious being. I love your Seeker's heart and mind. Every time I watch you react to a song I love, you spark joy in my heart. 💖✨💖
DISTURBED's David Draiman, fucken incredible it moves my soul
Don’t take this wrong but you are deeper than you first seem. Props Shaq!
He really is!! I thought for sure he was gonna make fun of most songs but the more I watch he gives real props to good music! With HUMOR!! His facial expressions and reactions.. 😂 omg I’m hooked
There is also a live performance of this song which is beautiful. This guy really sings like that live...
Simon & Garfunkel - The Sound of Silence 1966
After David performed this live in front of Paul Simon, Simon told him, “It’s not my song anymore. It’s yours.” David actually broke down in tears.
Simon wrote the lyrics to this song in his bathroom in about 5 minutes. He had put the water on and just concentrated on the sound of the water and this song was born.
Simon and Garfunkel has a happier tone to it. I do prefer Disturbed because it seems to fit the lyrics better
It depends in Disturbed cover is more anger, orginal is more sad despite of happy sounding. Difrent reaction on same problem
Your opinion is wrong lol Great version but pales in comparison to the original. Not even a debate.
Original sucked ass.
Paul Simon has even said this cover owns their original in all aspects. He told Draiman that the song was now their song and he gave them the torch.
@@vaatc FAAAAAAAAAAAAACTS. Sorry, Nathan... But please sit down.
I love the original version, but when I heard this, I just loved it even more than the original.
Starting off calm and then he raising the voice louder and louder just perfectly well.
This songis defiantly one of the greatest covers of all time and any song that has been covered.
Flóki Vilgerðarson you are absolutly right. It is rare that the Cover is better than the original but some people can do it.
YOU GOTTA DO A REACTION TO :
“Hotel California” by The Eagles !!!
PLEEEEEEEASE, pretty please 🙏.
Hell Yaaaa do it
Definitely!!!!!!
Holy fuck yes
Do it.
Yeah play it backwards. You'll be in for a real treat.:)
It is such an honor and a pleasure to watch Shaq expand his musical catalog in such a raw and open minded way. I am a Shaq stan!! Anytime I see a video of his pop up I watch. Because he's bringing authentic realness to all his reactions and I have so much respect for that.
Just picture Shaq reacting to are your ready or indestructible by disturbed. Give a like to see Shaq get turnt all the way up

Indestructible..... I agree 100%
