    I bought a 996 911 for about the same price as this one. It is a six speed and is a convertible and also has 100k miles. It was well cared for and I have all the paperwork including the original window sticker. After 2 months with it I am still grinning from ear to ear, I love this car !

    In 2009, i purchased a nearly flawless midnight-blue metallic (gray interior) '03 996 Carrera 4S with a 6 speed manual with 64,000 miles for $39,000 (I had a technician look it over and required the seller to make all the mechanical repairs - as well as remove dings and scratches I found on the body panels - before pick up). I live in New York so I wanted AWD, plus the wide-body design fixes the bar-of-soap appearance of the standard Carrera and Carrera S. I removed the air-box, installed a K&N cone filter and replaced the gray floor mats (with dark blue to match the exterior). Over the years I had to replace the alternator and the air-conditioner compressor (the glove-box door started rattling around 90,000 miles), but really that was it. Otherwise, it was one of the best cars I ever owned and total a blast to drive. I sold it in late 2013 with 103,000 miles for $20,000 and replaced it with a 2007 Aston Marin DB9 Volante, but I regret the decision every single day. Porsche . . there is no substitute.

    Bad decision, if your reason is you're afraid of an expensive repair. 928s are fairly reliable if you make sure the deferred maintenance is taken care of. There are no systemic hidden gotchas that can shred your dreams (and your wallet) if you get a well-maintained car whereas that IMS bearing can go no matter how well you treat the 996. Nevertheless, both are great cars, so get the one you love.

    For future value appreciation, the 928 will trounce the 996. The problem with 928's is that they were incredibly advanced cars in their day and were fairly complex electronics wise, now that they are 25 plus years old issues start cropping up and be difficult to chase down.
    Most P-Car guys dis the 996 since it is identical to the Boxster from the seats forward, not to mention all of the identified modes of failure attributed to the M96 engine design. Go to any classified section and see how many 996 or Boxster "rollers" are for sale, then try to find an air cooled "roller" for sale, not many.

    I have worked on many Porsche. Just last month 928- full engine reseal, head gasket and various other things after sitting for 25years. cost a good amount of $$ customer was glad to pay it. 996- IMS, IMS, IMS, you get the picture. can cause complete engine failure if not done. a few other favorites. 997 Turbo- VarioCam cam sleeve slip issue. Most favorite- a complete basket case 964 engine. I love rebuilding 964's Just hard to find one now days for a deal.

    Thanks for sharing your experience!! Congrats on achieving your Porsche 911 dream! The previous owner was correct about the 1999 911 3.4 engine IMS bearing being a better design. This year also has the throttle cable controlling the throttle body and It also has a "double row" IMS bearing that has 2 rows of ball bearings inside one enclosed case which is very robust. The years when they went to electronic throttle controlling the throttle body, 2001-2005, they also went to a "single row" bearing design which has 1 row of ball bearings and is also thinner . That is the bearing that seems to fail most often. If and when a clutch is due I would still recommend taking the plunge and upgrading the IMS bearing, but until then I think you will be just fine. Enjoy and keep us posted on your 911 adventures!!

    NO that is not alot of mile for a 928 They are designed to drive around the world several times at over 150 miles per hour They go FOREVER I have one and my friend has one that has done 450,000 miles It has NEVER had a transmission rebuilt and NEVER had a engine rebuilt I Doesn't burn a drip of oil and it still has all the power it did when bran new all it needs is maintenance and it will last LITERALLY a entire humans life span and then some if its taken care of

    Nice video. When this was made I'd probably made the same choices as you but I really like the 928s styling. They are poised to appreciate imo. I own an 86 944 Turbo and an 84 Carrera. I love them both. I've owned 2 other 911 cars in the past, a 72 911t and a 06 Carrera 2. All great cars but factoring in depreciation by far the most expensive car to own was the 06. C&D or R/T did a comparison back in '78,9, with 928 and Trans Am. I bought new TA WS6 with T tops. 185 hp OLDS 403 & Turbo 375 trans. 4 wheel discs. It was the very last of (400) minch small block with minimal smog gear. Car was a lot of fun for just under $10,000. That was the later 70s.... Still have the engine at near 400hp in a mid 70s, SPRINT. Also a 996 cab.

    Funny review, so much '928 fear' lol. I had a 928 for 11 years, the build quality was INCREDIBLE. It felt incredibly stable at speed and had a bank-vault solidity to it. Almost on par with the latest Porsches of today, and im not exaggerating. Don't be fooled by the lower than 911 resale values, the 928 was just not 'a 911' and suffered from a big mislabeling/stigma. It was unfortunately too futuristic at the time, but now looking back its pretty much a superior car than an SC/Carrera of the same time period in all ways except gross curb weight. I bought a well kept example, and took care of it as well...One tow in 11 years is in better than any car I've owned (most people buy 928s on the cheap, don't understand the car, and with no records...then are surprised when big bills show up...shocker). Repairs, reliability and maintenance are actually CHEAPER than the air cooled 911s, and what was once a 'complex supercar' is actually pretty simple to work on now. My 928 was FAR more reliable than both my 944 and 911 that I had around the same time period. I had a lot of cars (and girlfriends)...and the 928 was always the mutual favorite for a long drive. Even my mom drove it for a couple years when I went to college! Its an easy car to live with every day. Side by side, back to back, in terms of quality and drivability, it shames the 911 and 944 of that time, and more-so the fugly 996. PLUS you get the pop up lights :) The 996 by comparison would be a lot faster of course, but 99% of the time you're just cruising...and the interior in the 996 is just plain garbage. They cut every cost corner possible on that car. Sit in a 928 and 996 back to back in equal condition, touch all the buttons and switches, feel the surfaces, and you'll immediately know what I'm talking about. I'm 31 and have had 9 Porsches now, and almost 20 cars in total. I kept most cars for a couple years, at max. I kept the 928 far longer than any other car I owned for the reasons above. Through in the uniqueness on top of it, and its kind of the most under-valued classic on the market today. Grab those early 5 speed manuals with Pasha interiors while you can! :)

    • @highervibetribe9137
      @highervibetribe9137 8 років тому +2

      The 928's build quality is amazing, very well engineered and built car. Just need to find a good example, sadly because they're so cheap to buy, they end up in the wrong hands I people who neglect them and the maintenance which is why they get a bad rep, they're very fast. This S4 would sit happily at over 170 mph all day long and 0-60 in 5.5 sec. Most people don't know that the S4 and later variants start out in 2nd gear auto, you have to shift it yourself if you wanna hit first gear, they also don't know that if there Is an issue with the knock sensor in the engine, that it defaults the engine down to around 260 hp instead on the S4's normal 316-320.

    The 928 is the most important car to the Porsche company! It may not have gotten a chance to evolve as long as the 911 did, but the car’s legacy is seen in every non rear-engined Porsche available today - and that’s every car in the lineup except the 911. Without Porches experience with front engine water cool cars (the 928) the company would have folded... The 924, 944,and 928 was the companies bread and butter in the 80's and the water cooled 911 (996) and Boxer saved the company from going bankrupt again in the 90's. Without the water cooled technology and experience from the 928, Porsche was going down. The 928 was the first water cooled engine and car developed solely by Porsche from the ground up with out help or parts from VW or Audi.

    An s4 928 is worth around 23,000 today, five years after this video, a manual car will be around 30,000, although 996s are slightly rising in price, but early cars were based on a boxer and corners were cut on cost, as Porsche was going through a financial problem at the time. This is why they aren’t going up in value like other models.

    I believe 80% 928s were automatics. That my friends is the difference. The 5 speed totally transforms the car into an engaging driving experience. You are able to utilize the horsepower and torque as you will. Had the numbers been reversed, the 928 may well have replaced the 911.

      They're great cars and at bargain prices, just find one that doesn't have those issues, find the best example you ca. That has a good service history from a reputable mechanic. Clutch should feel light. The only real specially work should be any engine work, timing belt and such, wear and tear items can be done by any mechanic who knows what they're doing, alternator, brakes ect

      I've seen 928's with over 500,000 miles on the clock, and a few close to that, that drive just like they came out of the factory. They don't make them like they used to. They're very well engineered and high quality build, but they're just like any other car, if you drive them hard while new ting to maintain them then they aren't going to last. A high mileage 928 is nothing I worry about as long a the maintenance has been done on time and done properly. Regular oil changes with good oil, timing belt changes are usually done every 3-5 years or every 45,000 miles. Those cars are built like tanks. The build quality is better than the Porsches being built today. You just want one that is a clean example that has been looked after, preferable one owner, or at least family owned.

    • @michaeld2519
      @michaeld2519 7 років тому

      What you say is so true. In a high performance car like the 928, it's all about good maintenance. I've owned a 1983 manual S and a 1987 manual S4, and although parts were pricey, it was worth it as they were all round fantastic cars! Brilliant handling and awesome power, perfect interior ergonomics, and one of the most beautiful looking cars of all time. A 928 with a full service record is a necessity when buying, though. I'm currently on the lookout for a GT or GTS. Cheers!

    The 928 S4 over the 911, is a sound decision. but it has to be the right one, I would say the 968, would have been the best option as it is not too in your face but has everything the 911 has - but with a bit more practicality, a great design too.
    A bit disappointed with the 996 but looking forward to the project unfolding....

    Cool, I always dreamed about a 928 as well. Something so attractive about the whole 928 package, a perfect GT. Plus that early 90's Porsche styling was so good. The taillights of the 928 and 968 always draw my eye for some reason. But I have a 91 M5 and its got a much performance, and its bulletproof, and its invisible so I can get away with anything. However, I just bought a "sinister" black on black (w/ red seatbelts lol) 2011 base 911. I feel too conspicuous in it right now, but it's only been a month barely driving the car.

    When buying a secondhand car, it's always a good rule-of-thumb to look at the seller, and ask yourself, " Would I buy a T-shirt from this person ? ". Needless to say, Roman would make a terrible secondhand car salesman‼️🤔😆😂

    That's a great choice. I really want to see how this goes. I had ruled out 911s after reading about IMS/RMS issues people were having with the 996. Was the total price for this one less than $20k? I don't think he said.

      $16K for this 911

      +goatmonkey2112 Not sure if your search is over, but I would reconsider the 996... the IMS issue effected a really small amount of cars (unless you talk to someone who's engine failed). Owned a 99 996 since early 2004... zero issues.

    Those were the years when the bean counters really took over at Porsche and reduced cost to the point of where the product itself showed it: frameless windows in the doors, cheap interior materials, and cost cutting materials in the engine. Close a door on a 993 and compare it to the 996 and you will see what i'm talking about. The 996 is still great fun if you can get over its short comings and at 16k its cheap fun that is very hard to beat! I myself was rooting for you get a 928 (own two) and you probably could of came out ahead with time considering anything 80's is bringing stupid money.
