A few months ago I got a 2002 Carrera 4S. It is without question the best car I've ever driven. I was lucky enough to get the car with a 4-page CarFax service history, new clutch, new tires, IMS ceramic bearing and rear main seal all fixed. My car has 154,000 miles on it and drives like new. It does 0-60 in 4.5 sec and tops at 180mph, handles like a dream in dry or wet and cost me $19,000. It's the performance car deal of a lifetime! ....also my daily driver in Pennsylvania. Great video - thanks for sharing!
@Jammin Productions - Im starting to consider a real sports car, deciding between e46 m3 and c2 996 both cabs - I was wondering how reliability is after a year of ownership? 19k sounds like an phenomenal deal
Thanks Roman but rather than buying a 996 today I bought it yesterday :P meanwhile thanks to all 996 haters that have devalued this car so much, this means I was able to afford one, cheers! and yes it's had the IMS solution installed. Happy days!
hahaha yes, and they're the losers since they miss out on life. They never experience the pure, simple and natural feel of this ageless beauty! The 996 is a DREAM. I've always loved it and is my favorite 911 gen, since i was a kid. Thx man, finally another petrolhead that doesnt follow the irrational herd that can't think for themselves.
You wait...the 993 was an odd things. the 964 was considered a bit of a dog...time softens the criticisms and the qualities come out. The good things will come to the fore I am sure. My only issue is the lack of bonkers colours for the interiors.
Same, and it's undrrated in my view. It looks so ageless and for once it distinguishes from a Beetle. Not like all the other uninspired 911s. All the same. New or old. Except this one. Which also had communicative feel, nice interior, not cluttered dashboard, natural steering precision withotu stupid gadgets and overall modern technology taht's more reliable as well.
they went backwards with the design of the 997 same way the new 918 hybrid thing doesnt really look any more recent than the Carrera GT did in early 00s.
It's great to see that you really and truly love this Porsche 911. You can really see your passion for this 996, and that you genuinely love this car, and not just in front of the cameras.
I’ve had mine for 16 years. Very few problems. Serviced by same Porsche specialist at Zentrum in Calverton. Still look good and everything works as it should. Brilliant.
For all of us concerned about the Porsche IMS Bearing issue - I found a very informative article from Autohaus Hamilton in Australia about the IMS. The article also lists all the models and engines (with engine numbers) that are affected. To read the article just type in “Autohaus Hamilton IMS” into google. The Porsche models that are prone to IMS failure and should be replaced are: - All 986 Boxster models. - 987 Cayman & Boxster models up to engine number 61504715 - All 996 models (not including: GT and Turbo models) - 997 3.6ltr with M96/05 up to engine number 6950745
I totally respect the 996, but never liked the look of a Porsche. So I got a head turning original NSX, supercharged it, and am quite content. I read an evaluation years ago by Mario Andretti, and he felt the Porsche and the NSX were the two best driving cars.
You make me miss my 996. I sold it and now have a 997. But is was such an awesome car. Everyone had a bad opinion about it except for me. Fantastic videos !!!!!! Love your work !! .
I had one for 6 years and they great cars. Took it for a track weekend. It ran all out all day with no problems. I spent about $2,000 CAD a year and put on about 50,000 km. The 99s the IMS is fine because they are a dual row bearing unlike the later models which have a larger single row bearing. Because of that the 99s were excluded from the IMS class action suite. That said, the seal does leak ie. the three pronged IMS cover needs to be replaced every 40,000 km or so. Other than that they are as great as the video says. And you can get after market cup holders if you want.
I own a 3.6 996.... I love it.. I've owned faster cars, but none can provide the drivers experience or handling of the Porsche. It is a unique experience
Very good! Thank you for this excellent video videos that actually explains how good and how much of a value a 996 is. I use my 996 for multiday family trips (I have one kid), for groceries, going to the office, autocross etc. etc. It's such a versatile car and whatever the headlights might look like, it's still a Porsche. And yes, I do have the LN IMS bearing in it for peace of mind.
I owned a 993 in 95, fun car...I just purchased a 2000 996 with 193k...received 4 pages of service from 17k on...2 previous owners and I am #3...the car looks brand new, no paint and performs like a mouse with slippers going to his first ball... less than 5% of 996 will experience IMS and altho I suggest lower miles porsche owners to have it diagnosed, my mechanic who I have a very good relationship with has emphatically stated that if IMS will happen it would generally be in first 100k...and a high mile porsche may just be what the Dr ordered if it has been maintained meticulously say over a low mileage track ride beat to shit...A big indicator is if the car was CPO and qualified for this program...mine was I am having the time of my life with this car and I picked it up for 15k...and I will continue the care and love for this car like its past...the only concern I have for the 996 is that it doesnt slip into the 928s4 curse where when they were dumped in the 90's for 8-12k it opened the market for a budget buyer with no pension for maintenance and thus these incredible machines were laid to waste...a 928s4 GT is something to drive...I digress, great video and happy driving!!!!
as an owner of a 2000 boxster I can attest to allot of what he said, they are amazing cars. The one thing you do need to be aware of is that if something does break then be prepared to shell out to fix it. I have estimated I average around $3K to $5K a year to keep my car on the road.
Great positive review and totally agree! My 996 has been good to me and so much fun to drive. Only 5% of cars had issues with the IMS bearing and typically go before 50 miles. Find a good local Euro mechanic and the cost of maintenance is not bad at all. Search for deals. Paid only $1200 (CDN) for a set of Michelin Super Sports per spec. Manual transmission drain and fill, fuel filter and brake flush for $350, for example. It was my dream to have a 911 and now a reality!
Tires were the biggest expense on my 986, and same on my 997.2 to date. My 2001 986 (which I owned from 2005 until 2013) was the most reliable car I ever owned, and the cheapest to run. The only reason it wasn't the least expensive to own was the rapid depreciation in the later years as cheap, beater 986s took over the market. But my loss on that car is now a buyer's gain as 986 & 996 have likely bottomed out in value. 996TT, all 997.1 & 997.2 cars are now going up in value... so this may be the last days of the bargain 996!
I had a 996 for a couple years, they are an incredible value and such a well engineered car. It's crazy how the base 911s and the Cayman S' and such haven't really evolved a ton as far as performance. You can get 90% of the newer Porsche performance in the 996.
Germans have made a great car with the Porsche name. I have a 2003 C4S 996 with under 50,000 miles. It's incredibly made, unlike the cheap BMWs with spray on plastic that peels, glass windows that fall down, water container for windshield cracked and this car was expensive. BMW 330i and the car feels like a piece of junk! It was junk. Got rid of it and never will buy another BMW! Porsche is built like a TANK!!! Love my C4S 996 with enhanced exhaust system. Get the IMS, RMS and Clutch fixed and I don't worry. Enjoy a bona fide well- made top of the line PORSCHE! Rather have it than a turbo. More money to fix when things go wrong and make sure to get a stick shift. Many thieves don't know how to drive a stick shift.
I bought my 2001 996 in 2005. I like things new so I replaced the interior and top. Also, I had the car chipped added a cold air intake and short shifter. I changed the tires Michelin Pilot Sports and wheels to 18 inch original Carrera Chrome Wheels which I bought from LA Wheel. Recently I replaced the IMS bearing (didn't want to take chances) and since I am the 3rd owner decided to replace the clutch since they are their anyway. I only have 32K on the car and being it is over 15 years old able to get Classic Insurance which is cheap. My car looks and runs like new and had may offers to sell, but that's not happening. Take care of the car and you will keep it and not want to sell.
I'm thinking about a 996. Two years ago, I got a '99 986 for 9 grand, 50K miles. Since then I have put $700 into it to replace the window regulator, alternator, and battery- no other needs besides new tires and oil change. Yes, thank you haters and mass market economics for making this car affordable, and thanks Ferdinand for making it alternately a pleasure and a thrill to drive. If this is a "hairdresser's car," I'm gonna go to beauty school- they must know something the rest of us don't.
Hmmm...not the 914, 914-6, 924 or 944 or 928. And many Porsches have ongoing issues over several gens. And don't talk about the ones that catch on fire. For used Porsches you really need to know which years/models are the good ones and which are the bad ones. And parts are ridiculous prices and labor to work on them crazy.
I have a 35 year old 924 NA as my daily, starts up every time and the maintenance is no more than a golf... Don't have to use OEM parts, there are lots of good quality after market ones for a lot cheaper.
@@RobertKarlBerta If you can read instructions, watch videos, and turn a wrench, you can do a lot of Porsche maintenance yourself for 10-20% of dealer cost. Or, yes, you can go to the dealer, get the royal treatment, be assured of top quality service, and pay, pay, pay.
My 2001 996 has 32k miles. Clean history and solid maintenance. Easy to work on. This winter a new clutch and IMS. It is a beast for the money.........
I sold my 2003 996 Cabriolet in black two years ago. This hard top brings the longing fresh again. It was mechanically sound but when I sold it the were some things that were broken that were expensive to fix. The radio had stopped working, the left turn signal stopped working, the top would not go up and down and it was time to replace the wires in the convertible top. All in all about $6,000 of repairs and maintenance items. My next Porsche will be a hard top. Some other known maintenance items that will fail in the first 60,000 miles are the water pump, the oil pressure sending sensor and O2 sensors.
As you mentioned, the ability to take Porsches to the track or autocross repeatedly without having any problems is one of my favorite reasons for owning one. The brakes wont fade, the engines won't overheat, it won't go into limp mode, it won't throw codes like all other cars. When I go to the track or autocross, I see many of the other cars having problems when pushed hard because they aren't built for it. Also, at the end of the day, you can drive it home & run errands with it on a daily basis. I drive mine every day & will always have a Porsche in my garage.
Euphorica I mean, i'm not a purist. Becuae i don't like those ppl, they only think that classic Porsches are good. That's very narrowminded. I don't deny that cars like the Macan are anything less than amazing. But i have a petrolhead heart and i don't like those new age nerds either. They're TOO openminded. My petrolhead heart, it's bleeding now that Porsche has soo lil backbone and throws EVERYTHING overboard. I have nothing against modern cars. Yet that doesn't mean i don't value heritage and principles. Also, cars are being PUSSIFIED and less involving. The 90's-2008 cars were still communicative. Even a 991 GT3 RS, NOT delivered as a manual..... electronic powersteering, silly gadgets, several suspension modes, eco-fascist rubbish, digital gismos, safety features, driver's aids, 4 wheel steering, no atmospheric engines. Only the 911R is pure, but that's a very limited edition. NONE of the new 911s have the magic of the 996. But the biggest shock came last week. TAKE A DEEP BREATH and HOLD TIGHT! Porsche announced............ That their newest 911 in the future will have a 4 cylinder hybrid diesel engine!!!!! O H M Y GOD....... they are INSANE! This is the biggest automotive heressy EVER. And there have been plenty forms of blasphemy in the sports/supercar industry already.
Which is fat and heavy. Christ, the 996 is about the same wight as a 964 with much more power and way stiffer...ok, looks are subject but I do think with time it will be looked at with favour. It has a quirky look which now i like...I find out if the finance company says yes to my 996CSR...
Gotta admit, if I had extra $30k lying around acquiring dust, I would more than happily go and buy a 996. I have always loved Porsche's, and this video kind of persuaded me to strive towards purchasing a 911 once I get the ability to do so.
When I was about 20 a friend of min let me drive his air cooled 911 on the track. Three turns in i did an 180 degree spin. I righted the car and gave the keys back to my friend. I have not driven a 911 sense. I have mad respect for the car and at 6.5 feet tall it is one of the few sports cars I can fit in.
hotchalupa well, I think he's saying is worth more now that he's replaced the IMS bearing & what not...idk if that's a 4 grand difference but maybe there's more done too
Whats a problem about IMS bearing in Porsche 911 996 Carrera ?. Expensive this problem is ?, its a big this Porsche problem ?. Help me please because thinking of buying one
I had one of these for nearly 2 years until recently and it's the only car I ever had where I would get one again. Repair costs can be high but you can do a lot yourself - as I did. Lots of info on youtube how to and a lot of it is common sense if you know a bit about cars. Make sure you use the proper fully synth mobile1 oil. If you are buying one - service history is essential and good idea to get it looked over by a specialist. But - the MAIN reason to get one of these now is because prices are on the up and it could be now or never.
I still own a classic porsche. I went into it completely unaware of the cost to maintain it. I got it to go to the track. I would say on average I was spending 15k a year. I still own it and I take it out now and then for just short fun drives. But really it just left a bad taste in my mouth. I will probably never buy another porsche. More important, I will never take an expensive car to the track. I will stick with mazda, honda and subaru for the track.
The 996 is the BEST 911 model by far! Sure the newer ones looks cooler and got the latest gadgets but because they have more computers they are more likely to break as oppose to the 996 that doesn’t have a lot of computer work! And they are fun to drive! I used to own a 2002 porsche 911 Cab! I recommend anyone to get the 996 if they are in the market to buy a porsche!
Older cars not abused, are better built than the newer Porsches. Plus I can't stand the squinty back lights with no red stripe.I can't see when a Porsche driver puts on the brakes. What were they thinking? Tiny little back lights - Yuuck! Love my fat C4S butt with big back lights you can see when you put on the brake!!!!!!!
Great final summary of the series. Been watching with interesting as I bought a C2 996 halfway through the series, in black too but with "marmite" Savanna interior.;I like it but it's a very subjective colour. All the things you say are spot on. If people say they won't buy cause of the IMS and "fried egg" lights, more fool you. You are missing out. It's the perfect balance between old and new Porsches.
have a 1999 996. love it. all the porsche mechanics i have talked with tell me the imf bearing on the 99's is not an issue. hope they are right! so far so good. JDR
High mileage 996 intend to last way longer then a low mileage 996 anything under 40,000 miles are likely to have the highest failure rates of IMS failures. if you think about buying a low mileage 996 have a technician inspect the IMS bearing as soon as you can to see if the bearing is'okay my suggestion is even if the bearing is good I would add the direct oil feed which feeds clean filtered oil onto the bearing that way It can stay nice and cool and also avoid a failure in the future.
IMS isn't really a problem.. Only about 5% of the pre-facelift 996 ever had the problem and if you ask any Porsche mechanic they say people who get their changed to aftermarket are much more likely to get the problem.
With a bit time you can get a good one here for about 12K Euros. Most driving around here have the bearing already changend, but always worth to check it at the automobilclub for example. Cost about 79 Euros for not members buts worth it and you can have a nice car for little money.
Snap oversteer? I thought it was called throttle lift oversteer? I was introduced to that in my '71 911 on a S shaped highway onramp. Made for a really interesting time
I have a 996 carrera 4 cab. I had a supercharger on it when the IMS hit me at about 32k miles. Porsche had a program at the time and they were swapping our cors left and right on 996s and boxters for about 12 grand. So of course they removed the vortec. always wish I'd spent the extra 10 grand for a used turbo but 70k was a little too rich for my blood in 2005. Still is and I'm still paying it off but that flat six boxer engine still idles perfectly smooth and cant touch the performance for 10k but I'd never sell mine. hell I spent 7500 just for some new wheels and tires. These cars are pretty high end given they cost close to 100k when new.Like little tanks they have incredible light awd systems one touch convertible tops. very sophisticated and full of features. Just make sure you save 2k for a new clutch, or 1600 for a tune up. everything on a porsche cost 1000 it seems but u cant beat the driver experience and modern amenities.
I love Porches But it's 2016. Just buy an MR2 spyder with a 2ZZ for a third of the price. MR2 turbo for half the price all with 90s Toyota reliability.
No way. NOt even half the fun and its still a shitty boring Toyota that has a 4 cylinder. I dont care what year it is. This car is better than anything else. And it's very reliable too.
The MR2 spyder is somewhat like a Boxster, but more fun at low speeds due to it's low weight and size. Also, they're bulletproof reliable and well made (not quite porsche well-made, but surprisingly nice). Definitely can't hang with the boxster on a track but anybody who says they're not fun simply hasn't driven them. This is all talking stock of course, a 2ZZ spyder might even be able to outrun a Boxster S.
I owned a silver 6 speed 1999 for 5 years put 35000 miles i only had to change a/c unit $1800 a battery and 3 sets of back tires whole time i owned it needed a window regulator and few minor things i let it go for $12,500 people were scared to buy it because no ims bearing change i had $28k invested was worth it drove like rocket i had a ton of fun buy one you wont regret it
I was really taken by the new 996, having been the proud owner of 12 air cooled Porsches I tip toed into the new era I especially liked what the engineers at Porsche did to keep me satisfied with their new body. I could see a lot of my prior porsches in it and I liked that body style more than any other Porsche. I own a 1999 Aero Coupe all black, lowered a bit, IPD Carrera Plenum with cold air induction, IMS was done by prior owner, he said it didn't need it but he couldn't sleep at night thinking about it, I put a water pump on it, The Porsche now has 147 K miles on it and it flat hauls the mail, very fast and handles like a slot car, I will keep this Porsche. It is just what I wanted. Not used to the popularity of it, it"s always been the ugly duckling to others. I just enjoyed the car and didn't listen to them. Aero cars with rare colors are coming up in value. Buy one you won't be sorry.
Just picked up a 2000 cabriolet 911 Carrera with 58,000 original one owner miles. Just a beautiful car in every respect. Even if it never becomes more valuable I have no regrets. However I am going to guess like every other generation of 911s this one will eventually appreciate in value especially because it's a Cabriolet.
Replacing the bearing is no guarantee that the new one won't go out. A cheap Porsche usually turns into an expensive Porsche. The end. The only 996 worth buying is the Turbo. They had a different engine w/o the problem. Save up and get a post 2009 997. You'll be a lot happier.
Robert Johnson no, the 99 doesn't have the problem IMS, fyi , ALL Porsches have had the IMS "problem" it's just been a smaller percentage, like one percent or less.
@@tonyrios5112 do yourself a favour and get learned. The IMS bearing issue affected the engines of 996/early 997 Carreras. The Mezger dry sump engines of the Turbo and GT2/GT3s have 0% failure rate: www.total911.com/technology-explained-mezger-engine/
lately all car tubers have been saying that this is an amazing car for the money and i agree, so stop saying that because i want one and the prices keep going up lol
Great review, however the 996 came to America in 1999 so as of today it's 17 years old. The Ims is a maintenance part just like a timing belt on an interference engine. 2002 996s are 3.6 and have 320hp
Got a 2002 996 that I might sell to buy a turbo. It's a cool car, but there is something special about owning and driving an air cooled 911, I miss them.
my family had a lemon of a 996 but she still loved it and plans on re-buying one or a cayenne in the future even though she has a little bit of a sour taste in her mouth ;) great video!
I almost bought a 997 but got a z4M instead but I will get a 997 at some point. I am keeping an eye on on the market every day. I really want a coupe or a targa which seem harder to come by.
Awesome garage inventory of cars selected I really like that SRT but only con is im not much of an American Muscle type of guy. So Porsche 911 is definetely on my list because they seam to have a higher opportunity of become a futures classic and they hold value for a long time which is another perk drive for a year or two sell for almost the same price it was originally purchased at. WIN/WIN but never the less, great content "The Fast Lane Car" keep up with the videos u gained ur self a new subscriber today. Thanks again for all the necessary information!
There are no air cooled cars, they use oil and a radiator to cool the engine. Many motorcycles were once air cooled but then some tacked on oil coolers as well. Call a spade a spade.
Porsches are expensive to maintain compared to Corvettes. About inline with other German cars or the GT-R. But less than Jags or Aston Martins cars and ridiculously less than Italian cars.
knowxvill That is what I said. The GT-R is as costly to maintain as a 911. But still not as much as a British or Italian GT/Sports car. Then of course there's the stigma of being a GT-R owner. And how do you put a cost on that? :-)
Least Expensive. Miata, MR2 Lotus Elise/exige Corvettes BMW ///M, Earlier AMGs, Fried Egg Headlight Porsches GT-Rs, Later Porsches. Jaguars Aston Martins And then you have Italian Exotics Most Expensive. Is that about right?
Jethro Vitorio Scultor I don't know much about earlier BMW M's but earlier AMG's are very expensive to maintain. They are reliable and durable but their parts are ridiculously expensive. That's probably why they have such ridiculous depreciation. Check out what 4-5 yr old high end AMG's go for in Los Angeles. Some lose 75% of their value.
I've owned an M Roadster and had been a Member of a BMW Car Club here in the Philippines and costs were well within reason so long as you stay away from the "Stealership" Except if you own an E46 M3 SMG or an E60 M5. Scratch that, if someone gave me an E60 M5 i'd throw it right back at them. Those things are maintenance nightmares. The other models are reasonable... Okay, maybe the E92 M3s are a bit finicky and they do require 10w-60 but still within reason... I guess I was mistaken about the E55/SL55 being good value.
Nope, different motor altogether. But also different price league altogether. Turbos have doubled (or more) in value over the last few years as people recognized the bargain - it wasn't long ago you could find a decent 996 Turbo for under $30K.
the 997.1 cost close to double because it's a sorted out, updated better 911 than the 996 oh and that torque curve is perfect for an everyday super car.
Im able to buy a 02 911 Carrera Cabrio that is silver with a black top and black interior. Original owner car, never seen bad weather always kept in heated garage Undercover. It has 23k on it and also has had that expensive ims bearing just done and always maintained. The car is a 9.5 out of 10 only not giving at that point five because it isn't brand new. I could buy it for 25k right now. What do you think I should do I would love to own it? And really not just because I'm looking at it but it is honestly the cleanest example you would be able to find. Any info would be great
its good you talked about IMS but what you said is wrong: stock IMS may survive and replaced IMS may broke down. The design was wrong, not thé part itself. Besides, Every Porsche is concernés, not juste 996
..but man, speaking of which, its tough because, @ 20K, you could find a high mile Challenger SRT8. but this is a great price point to get an engine behind you.
Has anyone compared a second gen Mini Cooper to a boxter? I still have never driven a car that was as much fun as my mini was. Are the boxter similar in the fun factor, go kart like?
Dear Fast Lane - I love this 996 - forgive me if this is answered elsewhere, but what wheel/tire combo is on this 996? They look aftermarket but they are fantastic... I was curious about brand and size, and if you actually like them and would recommend them... I'm out here in California otherwise I'd be very tempted to make an offer on that 996... Thanks!
Honestly, I must say that at 90k miles, any car's service history starts shining through, and your car was probably thrashed especially being a 4S model (basically a Turbo without the Turbo). Anyway, the point it 90K miles is A LOT of miles for any sports car.
any well made modern ICE car should last 200,000 miles or more. I've had a few cars, some sport some not, that go past 200k. Being a sports car is no excuse for lack of durability. If I design a jet and not an airliner, I cannot tell the pilot "oh yeah well it's made to go fast so it wont last." Upkeep is important, but plenty of hi performance cars go the distance without needing constant attention. Porsche makes a fantastic car, but they are still VW - room for improvement.
Fahmbo With all due respect, your analogy is ridiculous. My point is the car's service history has a lot to do with how well it lives past 60-70-80-90k miles. This is especially true for a sports car. Naturally aspirated 911s put a lot of stress on the engine due to their high-revving nature. That's why a 911 Turbo is sometimes more reliable (revs less). My point still stands, you need to maintain your car well to get good results. 911s are known to be reliable, I know from experience as well. Don't tell me "any car can be reliable if you maintain it". That's absolute BS. In 2006, my dad fancied a Jaguar... The lights and other electronics started to go out on their own at less then 20k miles. Needless to say, he sold it.
VirusTornado Service history is everything I agree. I leaned a few hard lessons with that car and I understand that some people have good experiences with them. It just left a bad taste in my mouth. Hopefully I will own another 911 again someday because I love how they drive, but for now I realize cars like that have a reason for being $87k in 2003 and $25k just 10 years later.
Alex Stern Here's the thing though; 997s didn't depreciate as much as the 996's. Furthermore, 996 prices already started picking up. A 996 Turbo is fairly expensive now, and X51 996 Turbos are going at stupid prices. C4S 996s are demanding a good premium over a C2S. Porsches literally always appreciate in value over time, but they must hit rock-bottom first. GT3s hold their value best.
996 is a wonderful weekend/track/future investment car. My next car is gonna be a Porsche 997.2 Carrera 4S. Gorgeous classic lines with just enough of the modern 991 tech & cosmetic improvements. Any of possibility TFL getting one of those (or even a 997 GTS) to review?
Hi when I watched the vid it showed the Porsche doing the 1/4 in 15.406 at time point 1.08..Then states later in the vid it has a 4.9 sec , 0 to 60.... My Trans Am had a 4.9 0 to 60 and quarter mile at 13.8. So what am I missing here?
A few months ago I got a 2002 Carrera 4S. It is without question the best car I've ever driven. I was lucky enough to get the car with a 4-page CarFax service history, new clutch, new tires, IMS ceramic bearing and rear main seal all fixed. My car has 154,000 miles on it and drives like new. It does 0-60 in 4.5 sec and tops at 180mph, handles like a dream in dry or wet and cost me $19,000. It's the performance car deal of a lifetime! ....also my daily driver in Pennsylvania. Great video - thanks for sharing!
154,000 miles holy hell
It's hard to fathom paying that for a 150k car.
Here's the simple question ... how reliable is a 20 year old Porsche to a new one?
@Jammin Productions - Im starting to consider a real sports car, deciding between e46 m3 and c2 996 both cabs - I was wondering how reliability is after a year of ownership? 19k sounds like an phenomenal deal

@@randyzeitman1354 More reliable!
IMS is not the problem, "bore scoring" is.
how does the IMS bearing go bad? ?
@@beauchamphuberville1355 also will it be easily noticeable as a porsche 911?
One must drive the Porsche to understand it's brilliance.
AMEN!
Easiest manual transmission car to shift, I have heard.
Great video! I just hit 170k miles on my 996 and it's still super tight!
This is no doubt the most undervalued 911
The one and only problem with Porsche is, after you've driven one, everything else is just transport‼️☹️☹️☹️
And the one and only good thing about all your comments is, after reading them, everything said by others seems intelligent.
Josh Are you quite sure that's a good thing⁉️🤔🤔🤔
MrKeyboardCommando If you're trying to avoid hurling yourself through a plate glass office window, it is.
Josh In that case, it's not❗️🤗🤗🤗
Nickolai Siegfried You've just summed-up UA-cam‼️
The IMS bearing should have been a free recall job, it would have been for any reputable maker.
who cares about that, it can be fixed, engine bore scoring can't be fixed.
Dude. That is 20 years old. It looks like it could be a brand new model. It's crazy. The 996 was always my favorite Porsche 911 model.
Not quite yet. The 996 was from 1998-2004, so 19-13 years.
Firemarioflower it's made in 2002 or before.
they went backwards with the design of the 997
same way the new 918 hybrid thing doesnt really look any more recent than the Carrera GT did in early 00s.
Meno ‘Backwards’ with the 997? 😆
Love your work !! .
Ignore those haters..... what have you done!!!
Sweet!
I own a 3.6 996.... I love it.. I've owned faster cars, but none can provide the drivers experience or handling of the Porsche. It is a unique experience
Im thinking about getting one, what faster cars have u owned that u can compare it to??
I owned a 993 in 95, fun car...I just purchased a 2000 996 with 193k...received 4 pages of service from 17k on...2 previous
owners and I am #3...the car looks brand new, no paint and performs like a mouse with slippers going to his first ball...
less than 5% of 996 will experience IMS and altho I suggest lower miles porsche owners to have it diagnosed, my
mechanic who I have a very good relationship with has emphatically stated that if IMS will happen it would generally be in
first 100k...and a high mile porsche may just be what the Dr ordered if it has been maintained meticulously say over a
low mileage track ride beat to shit...A big indicator is if the car was CPO and qualified for this program...mine was
I am having the time of my life with this car and I picked it up for 15k...and I will continue the care and love for this car
like its past...the only concern I have for the 996 is that it doesnt slip into the 928s4 curse where when they were
dumped in the 90's for 8-12k it opened the market for a budget buyer with no pension for maintenance and thus these
incredible machines were laid to waste...a 928s4 GT is something to drive...I digress, great video and happy driving!!!!
Aaaa
as an owner of a 2000 boxster I can attest to allot of what he said, they are amazing cars.
Happy days and good luck with it! It totally doesn't dessrve the hate!
Agreed! I changed out the P-Zeros when due to Mich Super Sport- what a difference!
@@487shadow VW makes everything better!
Porsche makes the rock solid cars, I love Porsches
rock solid for people who never owned one :) Never had any problems with the two BMWs I've owned, now I drive e46 330 convertible and adore it.
@itsdastuff AMEN!
I love my 2001 996 C4! Sold my 1977 911S after 30 yrs and bought this!
Some other known maintenance items that will fail in the first 60,000 miles are the water pump, the oil pressure sending sensor and O2 sensors.
here 6 years later hearing you can get a 996 for 17k HURTS! They are $40k+ in my area
There is no substitute. How true!
i used to not like the 996 until i got a ride in one, the first time i ever sat in a 911 and i got a ride and he floored it.
My 2002 Boxster just got upgraded to a 2001 996 Cabriolet, Florida car, one owner with 28K. I couldn't be happier. It's gonna be a great summer.
996 is absolutely amazing. and the hate is rehashed old school stupidity.
As well as new-aged arrogance and weak retardedness. Many of the haters drool over pieces of shit like the 991.
Firemarioflower couldn't agree more !
People talkling about this 996 that IMS bearing breaks down. Thats a truth in this Porsche ?, help me please because i want to buy this Porsche
Facelift 996 is(to me) the best looking 911 there is. Glad all the “purists” devalued it so much. It’s only going to appreciate from here on out.
Man, after Doug Demuro reviewed this car, it seriously rocketed up in value!
The main reason Roman reckons you should buy a Porsche is, he's got one for sale‼️😜😜😜
yep.
MrKeyboardCommando LOL
In another video they said they paid $16k for this car... Here, he says it's a "$20k" car... lol
hotchalupa well, I think he's saying is worth more now that he's replaced the IMS bearing & what not...idk if that's a 4 grand difference but maybe there's more done too
Whats a problem about IMS bearing in Porsche 911 996 Carrera ?. Expensive this problem is ?, its a big this Porsche problem ?. Help me please because thinking of buying one
Love my 996.2. Amazing car. Perfect for daily use and daily fun.
Trust me mate, this is MILES better than any classic 911. You will be having a sweet everlasting taste in your mouth if you drive that beast.
15k a year?? Wtf are you doing to it, lol? If it’s on race prep, then that’s really separate from the routine maintenance you’d expect.
$15K/year? How?
Bought my 2001 996 Carrera 4 because of this video. Perfect all year round sport car.
Just bought mine last week!!! a pure joy...congrats!!!
I love Porches
But it's 2016.
Firemarioflower I like Porsches, but nothing is more reliable than a Corolla engine.
sorry buddy
gorrilaunit99 And what do you mean with 'it's 2016' it's just a number....
This is all talking stock of course, a 2ZZ spyder might even be able to outrun a Boxster S.
gorrilaunit99 Dude mr2s are ugly as shit
I use mine as a daily driver and it is very stout and reliable.
A good independent Porsche shop can do 996 key programming and cutting.
future classic for sure
Had my 996 turbo for years. Rock solid. Not much more expensive than a C4s and none of the engine problems. Twice the performance
I owned a silver 6 speed 1999 for 5 years put 35000 miles i only had to change a/c unit $1800 a battery and 3 sets of back tires whole time i owned it needed a window regulator and few minor things i let it go for $12,500 people were scared to buy it because no ims bearing change i had $28k invested was worth it drove like rocket i had a ton of fun buy one you wont regret it
You should have spent the $1.700 and changed he bearing.
Good points! Just picked up my 996 Turbo 😊
Ims is not a problem for me, got my 996 with 197k miles 3 yrs ago and the problems I have was a junky interior, and the rats chewing all the plastic.
Robert Johnson, you don't replace the IMS, and RMS, you fix them. If you replace, yes...you'll still have problems. The name of the game is FIX!!!
True.....I like the 991 more but the allure of the 996 is undeniable.
996 3.4 is just an amazing car. point.
hope you can find a 996/997 4s , they are worth every penny
lately all car tubers have been saying that this is an amazing car for the money and i agree, so stop saying that because i want one and the prices keep going up lol
u did it too.
The thing that I actually like about the IMS issue is this. You can use it to get the price dirt cheap
I found one 00 Carrera with 100k miles and clean title. Automatic convertible for 13k cash. Is it a good deal???
Yes, the 996 are awesome, and think the 3.4 996.1 is possibly the best driving experience
my family had a lemon of a 996 but she still loved it and plans on re-buying one or a cayenne in the future even though she has a little bit of a sour taste in her mouth ;) great video!
my old mini Cooper type S key was 450$. and the key for our new Infiniti is roughly the same. I'm not surprised at these prices.
Awesome car for the value own my c4 for 3 years no issue.
I'll never get the idea of IMS bearing failure off my head. Actually sold my 04 4S. My next 911 would be 997.
You must be very knowledgable... 997.1 still has the IMS issue. Only the 997.2 has it completely fixed.
Reason #6. It is the only porsche to share the headlight design with a Le Mans winning Porsche, the 1998 GT1
Great video. I am considering a 996 for some of the "pros" that you mentioned in your video. Thank you for the confidence boost in my choice.
Virtually all cars are extremely reliable if you maintain it properly and out money into it when you need to
3:00 that's the best looking porsche
I almost bought a 997 but got a z4M instead but I will get a 997 at some point. I am keeping an eye on on the market every day. I really want a coupe or a targa which seem harder to come by.
i saw one on autotrader for 12900 and i am practically drooling over that car right now when you said it does 0-60 in 4.9 seconds xD
I’m sorry but this car is known to drive with more than 180,000 miles..
not just 96k miles Lol ..
I had a '99 that cracked a cylinder wall at 79k mi. the cost of the motors is crazy if something goes wrong.
Miata, MR2
Lotus Elise/exige
Corvettes
BMW ///M, Earlier AMGs, Fried Egg Headlight Porsches
GT-Rs, Later Porsches.
Jaguars
Aston Martins
And then you have Italian Exotics
Most Expensive.
I've owned an M Roadster and had been a Member of a BMW Car Club here in the Philippines and costs were well within reason so long as you stay away from the "Stealership"
Except if you own an E46 M3 SMG or an E60 M5. Scratch that, if someone gave me an E60 M5 i'd throw it right back at them. Those things are maintenance nightmares.
The other models are reasonable... Okay, maybe the E92 M3s are a bit finicky and they do require 10w-60 but still within reason...
I guess I was mistaken about the E55/SL55 being good value.
do you work on it yourself?
Turbo 996 don't have the IMS issue.
Guy reminds me of Dan Pastorini. Thanks for the info. Now I know what model to look for and have the bearing info.
Any info would be great
Im a complete addict - have been for 25 years. If you have to ask what they are like you will never get to know.
its good you talked about IMS but what you said is wrong: stock IMS may survive and replaced IMS may broke down. The design was wrong, not thé part itself. Besides, Every Porsche is concernés, not juste 996
turbos are fine with metzger engine.
..but man, speaking of which, its tough because, @ 20K, you could find a high mile Challenger SRT8. but this is a great price point to get an engine behind you.
Thank you for the video I was thinking of purchasing one soon
Has anyone compared a second gen Mini Cooper to a boxter? I still have never driven a car that was as much fun as my mini was. Are the boxter similar in the fun factor, go kart like?
for that price, I would take a brand new(last year left over) mustang V6, OTD with same power and some more extra room, less maintenance costs.
Thanks!
I know you say they run forever but my C4S with 90k miles was a pile of crap. In the shop more than out. I guess it just depends on the car.
Correct! Not true for everybody but so true!
If you you purchase one with the ims bearing fixed, is like a timing belt were you have to change it so many miles?
996 is a wonderful weekend/track/future investment car. My next car is gonna be a Porsche 997.2 Carrera 4S. Gorgeous classic lines with just enough of the modern 991 tech & cosmetic improvements. Any of possibility TFL getting one of those (or even a 997 GTS) to review?
I have seen a very similar looking car to Project Porsche parked in town near my town in San Jose CA, but it’s a convertible I think
Great 996.... future classic!!!
997 is much better
Hi when I watched the vid it showed the Porsche doing the 1/4 in 15.406 at time point 1.08..Then states later in the vid it has a 4.9 sec , 0 to 60.... My Trans Am had a 4.9 0 to 60 and quarter mile at 13.8. So what am I missing here?
