Excellent review, I have always been a fan of the 928 since high school. It was THE Porsche of the time. I'm looking for a 78-79 and am just doing my research. Enjoyed the video.
I was 14 years old when I learned to drive a manual in a 1982 porsche 928 that my dad imported because he could not find a manual for sale in the US at that time. To this day its still a dream car, but I have been too hesitant to buy someone elses problems...
Sounds like you had a cool dad! 💯👊 Yes, I totally understand… These cars have changed hands many times because of the age. That’s why it’s important to buy the nicest one possible…. Because ‘deals’ are usually other peoples problems 💯 Thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
Cool review! I would have emphasized the importance of fuel line replacement as well (understood to be part of top-end refresh) and fuel pressure dampers/regulator. I have an 86.5 and I hope I never need to sell it.
Congrats on another world class video. I’ve had 5 Porsches and I’m not sure I’ll ever have the opportunity to have a 928 although I’ve always wanted one. Love my Panamera 970 - hope to get your Panamera insights some time soon. Keep up the great work!
I own a Blue with bone-white interior 1989 5 Speed S4 with 42K miles (perfect interior as it was always garaged). I've owned it since 1996 (2nd owner). Mint condition but I need to replace bushings and shocks. Would love to service all the shift linkages (I was told these peices are plastic ?). Would love to find a 928 guy with in-depth experience that can fix bid the work without it costing me a fortune.
I got a 80 928 5 speed for cheap 3 years ago. I learned how to drive manual in it. Despite my incompetency early on the car still never disappointed me. Even though reverse grinds every time it was selected, 1st just wont go in sometimes, 2nd just doesn't work most of the time 😅 The exhaust fell off twice, and it wouldn't pass smog until I realized the full emission system was missing. Clutch fan spins slow, pusher fan won't work. Dash is fully cracked... But the engine runs very strong. Car stays planted around bends. Rolling through the (35% operational) gearbox in the California canyons and LA highways is euphoric. The ownership experience is way better then my pervious newer cars. Parts are easy to find (comparing to my a 90's japanese car) Documentations are everywhere and the community is great and crazy smart. I found your channel 2 years ago and you helped me a lot. Watching this video I was like: Yeah the car DO vibrates rough and the engine mount IS very weak, and the boasters DO sag, and the doors DO rattle... Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge! p.s. I always wanted to come to Miami!!
My first 928 was an early manual like yours, and 1st gear was also toast 🫠 In an odd way, I feel it made me a better driver because I was forced to focus….at least that’s what I keep telling myself 😆 These 928’s are lot’s of FUNNN! 💯🙌🙌 Thanks for watching! 🔥🔥

Thank you for another great vidéo about the beloved 928. Your knowledge and common sense is awesome. Please continue awaking people about these amazing cars. Big and best regards from France . I've got a 1985 928s stick shift, couldn't be prouder to own such beauty. Will look into your advice about the engine and transmission mounts. You really think it changes the car that much ? Mine has 200k kilometers and runs so well.
Hi from Miami! 👋🏻 Yesss, new motor/transmission mounts changes the feel completely…it will feel new car smooth! 🙌🙌 You’ll also find the car more fun to drive, and rev up! 💥💥 Forum 2013 thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
This week my 1983s euro (300bp) arrived. I just had a first drive around the block. What a rocket!!! i cannot believe some people call this a slower car to modern standards. In a rolling start with the kickdown it flies away ! What an absolute thrill to drive this car. I am also very happy with the standard exhaust on this car - to a point where I don’t understand why people start fooling around with aftermarket exhausts. It destroys the soul of the car. It is perfect as it is!!
Most of the early 928’s were manuals. After the 4 speed auto was introduced, the ratios changed. Also remember that most cars at the time were slow… the Corvette only had 185hp.
I….AGREE! 🙌🙌 It would be epic! But Porsche has already said that they’re going all electric except for the 911…even the Boxster is going full electric 😳😳 Times are changing fast 💨 Hertzair thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
It’s the most iconic Porsche but it does not compete with a 911. I’m sorry it’s my favorite Porsche but even I know as a 928 and it’s not nine 911 hence why I was never able to replace the 911.
I have allways loved the look of these cars. I will never be able to afford one though. This has been one of the most informative videos about 928s that i have seen.
love your 928 content...its one of the most underated sportscars ever.. something happend to my 1984 928s4 and now the speedo does not work and the trans is not shifting properly..can you point me in the right direction?
Hey! If it’s been sitting, the fluids in the transmission might have drained…all it takes is a little leak. Top it off with fluid before anything else. The speedo gets it’s signal from the wires that are next to the battery terminals in the back, make sure they haven’t been crushed or unplugged. You can find lots of pictures of the speedometer wire on Rennlist, it’s a great 928 site! Thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
Thanks to your advice I am driving my uncle's 928 that I inherited fully confident. I agree with what you say, definitely gets a second wind in speed, must drive the car to get it! The problem now is getting new leather seats, there are tears unfortunately. Not sure how I will proceed. I will be calling dealerships for a new dashboard, thank you.
We just had a 1987 S4 in our shop. 78,000 miles, no seat sag. Fantastic car. Many of the issues presented here we had to deal with. Luckily, many of the little fiddly bits are still available from Porsche. The teflon strips and latch bushings for the hatch? Spot on. Do it.
R12 is the absolute best, it cools down the interior faster and runs at a lower pressure than R134a. If the front fan is working properly, it should be an IceBox even in the Texas weather 🥶 I would also bypass the heater valve, it never fully closes if everything isn’t working perfect. You don’t want the AC to be competing with the heater. I’ve seen people instal manual bypasses, so you can still have the option to use it in the winter
@@HernanSpeed interesting about the R12, I did not know that. Was not meaning to switch over to R134 anyway, good to know. Ok thank you, I will keep all of this in mind going forward, still learning about cars, just so happens God gave me this one to start learning mechanics with 😄 saludos y gracias por los videos 👍
This car from when I first layed eyes on it was and still is the car I would want on my wish list. A Bugatti, or a Ferrari or BMW or any other make or model just don’t bring the same feeling. Taste is individual.
@@HernanSpeed Cheers! I just want one regardless of others opinions. 45 to 30 yr old cars and this one still grabs me. I love BMW’s. I don’t know which car manufacturer really excels as the best for the masses, but the 928 no matter the year I want it!!! I can pick and choose which year I prefer, but no matter which year I would just love to have one. The 78 or 95? I’ll take either. I love the car regardless of year. They are all beautiful.
Yes! Two 928 videos coming this February! The 928 GT’s prices have exploded in the last 10 years, as see the prices going higher! 🚀🚀 Are they worth ‘double’ compared to an automatic?? Osptony thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
Car & Driver compared the 850 VS 928GTS, you can still find the magazine scans online. But that’s when they were new.. I see the Porsche 928 as a much easier car to work on and maintain, the 850i even requires two batteries! So, my vote goes to the 928!💥💥 But I’m not gonna lie… there’s something about the 850’s pillarless profile that draws me in! 🙌🙌 ReyRob thanks for watching man! 🔥🔥
@@HernanSpeed I want to ad a 1990 928 S4. Aut. to my garage but I’m being tempted by an equally beautiful 1992 850i Aut. They are both priced equally and similar mileage, approx 120.000kms
Can you do a video on 928 aftermarket upgrades? In particular, I would love to get a throatier exhaust note. I had the rmb done, but it’s still too quiet. Also, would love to get more pep - can you suggest an easy to do tune?
The RMB is the most popular exhaust upgrade because it keeps it quiet.. with a little extra sound. It’s still not loud compared to most cars today. The S4 has 2 more secondary mufflers that can be bypassed, that would be your next step. It would be louder, but nothing crazy. - I had a 928GT with all the mufflers bypassed, including the Catalyst….it was like a Nascar. Way too loud for most, but also glorious! 🙌🙌 Go one step at a time.. On the tune, no need… The “Throttle/Bowden cable adjustments” will COMPLETELY change the way it drives. It will go from feeling a bit lazy, to having an eagerness to accelerate… Most 928’s are not even doing full throttle because these adjustments are off. Search Rennlist 928 forums, lots of “How To’s” Also make sure that it’s running perfectly (wires/plugs/coils). If these are older and tired, the 928 will start feeling sluggish.
My second 928. The first written off while parked in town. The second I bought 12 years ago with 60,000ks on the clock in perfect condition. The first thing that broke was the bearings in the transaxle. Managed to rebuild, as new was going to be horrifically expensive. Had a pretty good run after that with just the normal maintenance, that was until I did the second cam belt which came at a cost because I had to replace all the cogs and extras. There were some grumblings about an oil leak, I think this was the rocker covers. Then an oil leak from a cracked sump which required engine out. All obvious additional stuff done including oil leaking from the rocker covers. During the process the mechanic wrecked the transmission, but when talking to the transmission specialist he said quite common for these Merc transmissions to fail after 160,000ks. Transmission rebuild. Car still not right, took it to another mechanic who sited dodgy workmanship, and where I thought the previous expense was high it was nothing compared to the further work done. Basically now aside from an actual engine rebuild, everything has been done including a refurbed air intake manifold, vacuum lines, fuel lines, thrust bearing, engine mounts, wiring looms, undercar metal protector, cat delete, etc. Only been out of the garage and it leaked air coolant and one of the coolant hoses had frayed. Car going in on Monday for the replacement of the 2 water houses up front. After this there cannot be anything else left to fix! So I guess the short story is that I have spent at least the purchase price on the large mechanical bills and that does not include normal maintenance over the term of ownership. These cars are now 33 years old and no matter how well you look after it, everything will eventually need replacing or fixing. But man the engine is so sweet now and way better than I can ever remember
Reading your comment reminds me of the importance of finding a qualified technician! Otherwise it’s not going to go well. But…it’s totally worth it! FUNNN! 🙌🙌 Zardos Spinosa thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
@@HernanSpeed At the end of the day it was not really the mechanics fault. When you start to work on these cars it also starts to uncover other stuff. The bottom line is that perishables do perish and these are now quite old cars. Will be real happy when the coolant hoses are done tomorrow and I can drive it again. Sadly in my country everything has gone Woke, but I am a patriot, and a good blast with the pipes going full V8, is always going to be hard to beat.
I had a 1979 silver 928, absolutely loved it, it was used for the sound of the 928 Tom Cruise drove in the movie “Risky Business”. It was in a “TJ Hooker” episode and was in the movie “Some Kind of Wonderful “. I eventually sold it to Columbia studio’s for a movie called “Lenard Part 6”. They camouflaged it and mounted a tank gun on top, I’ll try and include a picture. Side note, it was first owned by Sylvester Stallone as partial payment for a movie he made, had the paperwork with his signature in the glovebox.
@@HernanSpeed Thanks! I'm slowly buying parts to refresh the injectors (I can see some rubber splitting). She only has 118K miles, 1 owner. New green wire. New fuel filter and pump. I sold my '82 911SC on BAT last year, this 928 is hopefully my "forever Porsche"
I like both! 💯👊👊 But they’re at different price points… especially if the GTS is a manual (more the double the price). The condition is the number one factor for me Thanks for watching brother! 🔥🔥

Great video! Where can I get that Teflon tape for the rear hatch? Do you have a part number... can't seem to find any official Porsche part number? thanks!
@@HernanSpeed Thanks for the part number. Also, what is the part number for the two black strips? I think my 89 are missing these. Just sold my low mileage 83 S, so no reference to look at. Even though I'm on my third 928, this video provided some great new insights! THANKS.
1st make sure it’s got the flip-up wing (you’ll see the exposed metal parts from underneath). To flip up, give it a solid pull-up 💪…like if you’re lifting the hatch from the wing. Sometimes it gets stuck, but it will ‘flip-up’. I usually leave it as is, the strong connection points are it’s main strengths. Thanks for watching brother! 👊👊
I would add change out any original radiator. Those oil coolers inside do not last forever and the dreaded mixing of radiator / engine oil / transmission oil is an expensive mess. Happened to my transmission in my '87 S4.
Thanks for sharing! Absolutely! 🙌🙌 And the plastic side tanks on the original radiators don’t help either! Great tip! Peter Schmidt thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
I agree! 💯💯 I modified all my cars when I was younger, ‘I thought’ it was cool at the time…. then I would see a mint original one. I rarely modify now and always look for originality… the charm, the mystic is always there! 🙌🙌 Gene Hunsinger
Hi!👋🏻 If the speaker stopped working after the radio change, for sure. Radios that don’t have external amps are sending the signals to the speakers directly from the head unit. So it’s a bad connection: 1) the installer forgot to hook up that speaker. 2) connection is loose. Either way, it’s simple enough to track down 🙌🙌 Med8tor1 thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
Landon, I think you’re right! Especially 6-15 year olds…. they often ask if it’s a Ferrari! I didn’t get these reactions 15 years ago, that’s for sure. The Porsche 928’s are only getting cooler with time! 💯💯 Landon thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
I've owned 3 of them. Two were 93 GTS, my last was an 87 S4, all were 5-speeds. Did not know about the rear spoiler on the 87 being a flip up, as being single, I hardly opened the rear hatch. Although all were very low mile cars, I actually found the S4 to be smoother.
I have air intake issues 🙄 Even the experts at my local Porsche-specialist weren’t able to diagnose the cause. Is it the Mass-airflow-sensor or the ignition ECU or the injection ECU? No one knows..... 😓
Most Porsche shops won’t be able to diagnose it, you must find a 928 specialist. Go to Rennlist 928 forums and ask for a specialist in your area, you’ll get several recommendations in a short time. Thanks for watching brother! 👊👊 Link HERE: rennlist.com/forums/928-forum-69/

I was 14 years old when I learned to drive a manual in a 1982 porsche 928 that my dad imported because he could not find a manual for sale in the US at that time.
To this day its still a dream car, but I have been too hesitant to buy someone elses problems...

That’s a great spec! 💯💯 Jump on Rennlist forums and ask about shops in your area, you’ll get an answer fast 💨
Thanks for watching man! 👊👊

Great model!! 🙌🙌 Nothing like those Euros! The exhaust sounds delicious on those! 💯💯

Most of the early 928’s were manuals. After the 4 speed auto was introduced, the ratios changed. Also remember that most cars at the time were slow… the Corvette only had 185hp.
Porsche needs to reintroduce the 928 by making a 2-door Panamera with the V8. I’ve always preferred the 911, but have always rooted for the 928.
I….AGREE! 🙌🙌 It would be epic! But Porsche has already said that they’re going all electric except for the 911…even the Boxster is going full electric 😳😳 Times are changing fast 💨
Hertzair thanks for watching!
Thanks for watching brother! 👊👊
I have a 82 auto no spoilers. and 88 5 speed. Love the look of the 82 but love the drive and feel of the 88.

excellent advice - thank you. 928 FOREVER!
THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE! 👊👊
love your 928 content...its one of the most underated sportscars ever.. something happend to my 1984 928s4 and now the speedo does not work and the trans is not shifting properly..can you point me in the right direction?

We just had a 1987 S4 in our shop. 78,000 miles, no seat sag. Fantastic car. Many of the issues presented here we had to deal with. Luckily, many of the little fiddly bits are still available from Porsche. The teflon strips and latch bushings for the hatch? Spot on. Do it.
Thanks for watching brother! 👊👊
Mine is an '81 S4 Euro, very excited to start driving it. Next up is putting the R12 freon, 100+ degrees in Texas 😅
R12 is the absolute best, it cools down the interior faster and runs at a lower pressure than R134a. If the front fan is working properly, it should be an IceBox even in the Texas weather 🥶
I would also bypass the heater valve, it never fully closes if everything isn’t working perfect.

Another great videos! How would you compare and S4 with a BMW 850i?
Car & Driver compared the 850 VS 928GTS, you can still find the magazine scans online. But that’s when they were new.. I see the Porsche 928 as a much easier car to work on and maintain, the 850i even requires two batteries! So, my vote goes to the 928!💥💥 But I’m not gonna lie… there’s something about the 850’s pillarless profile that draws me in! 🙌🙌

@@HernanSpeed I want to ad a 1990 928 S4. Aut. to my garage but I’m being tempted by an equally beautiful 1992 850i Aut. They are both priced equally and similar mileage, approx 120.000kms
@reyrob I’d take each of them for a long drive, you’ll quickly find out which one is for you 🙌
Thank you, had an 1986 944 and is was a blast.

Search Rennlist 928 forums, lots of “How To’s”
Also make sure that it’s running perfectly (wires/plugs/coils). If these are older and tired, the 928 will start feeling sluggish.
89 S4 with Bypass, yes it does sound glorious
Glorious indeed! 💯🔥🔥
FUNNN! 🙌🙌
Zardos Spinosa thanks for watching!
Incredible story man!! What a historic 928!! 🔥🔥🔥
after this video i bought a late 91 928S4 with full leather interior and factory GT Exhaustsystem. Best car ever ❤

I love my '81 928! I wish it was running.... has the "start, then dies" problem. I'll work on it this spring
It’s either fuel or air, but likely fuel. The fuel pump has a check valve, it keeps the system pressurized with gas.

How do you flip up the wing ? i have a 87 928 S4 - Thanks & Love your 928 videos !
@@HernanSpeed Get the CSF aluminum radiator. Replacing the plastic side tanks are a throw of the dice.
A car is only ever all original ONCE! You get to see many things, including the CHARM.
I agree! 💯💯 I modified all my cars when I was younger, ‘I thought’ it was cool at the time…. then I would see a mint original one. I rarely modify now and always look for originality… the charm, the mystic is always there! 🙌🙌

The driver side speakers ( front) is not working since I changed the radio. That speaker is still new. Is that the reason why it’s not working now?
Hi!👋🏻 If the speaker stopped working after the radio change, for sure. Radios that don’t have external amps are sending the signals to the speakers directly from the head unit. So it’s a bad connection: 1) the installer forgot to hook up that speaker. 2) connection is loose. Either way, it’s simple enough to track down 🙌🙌
