As a current 928S4 owner and having been around the cars since 1980 I can tell you this is one of the most informed “history of the 928” videos out there. It was refreshing to hear just how iconic and forward thinking this car was when it debuted. Car and Driver said at the time that it made the 911 look like an antique. They also later called it the “Titanic” of supercars, referring to its massive depreciation but that’s another story. Great that Al Holbert’s flying trap run was included in the video. The car Magnus Walker was exhibiting is a very early car, #88 and like a lot of 928s was in desperate need of restoration but he’s the right guy for the job. Kudos to a great video keeping the story alive!
I’m sad there was no mention of the time that Jeremy Clarkson made us all cry. The time he talked about his dad passing away, and how he got to see his dad one last time, only because the 928 he was testing that week, was able to sit at 170mph comfortably for long periods.🙏🏼
Their biggest fail was my biggest win ever. Proudly owning a 928 GTS for 18 years now and it has appreciated by 100% during that time. It is still a great daily because it has a serious trunk and was built to last.
@@djp279 So true. But that's exactly what will never happen in the medium run. But well... It may pay for a nice electric seniors' cart when I'm old. ;-)
The 928 will always hold a place in my heart. My dad had a manual 79 928 for around 10 years. It was the car I learned to drive manual on, the car I drove to prom, and also a car that Magnus drove! He’s since sold it and I miss it but the memories will be with me forever.
In the late '80's, I had a high school, neighborhood friend that her father had one of these in his garage. He never let his daughter drive it, no matter how many times she begged, and believe me, she was extremely spoiled. Anyway, one day I was over there and he walked out in the yard, threw me the keys and told me to drive him to the store. It was not a far, or fast drive, but it was an incredible drive for me at the time. Imagine a 17 year old kid sliding behind the wheel of one of these beauties. Man, I thought my head was going to explode, but I had to keep my cool. I honestly don't remember the year model of the car, I just remember looking at it every time I would go over there and the garage door would be open. Even with the car cover on it, that car looked cool as heck.
Had a similar experience with a high school flame’s grandfather. He had this wonderfully restored 66 beetle with a hurst “T” shifter. It was just a cool ride. I’ll always carry that memory with me.
In 1982 I was a junior in high school and my mother was dating this guy who had a 280ZX Turbo. He was going for a weekend with mom and he tossed me the keys. Mom was as surprised as I was. She said “What if he wrecks it?” He replied “I’ll get it fixed.” I had a great weekend, I even got a date with someone I had no shot at. And to this very day I love the ZX, not the Z, but yes the ZX. I have owned two and would not be against having another, if the price is right. The only 928 memories I have are from 1980, I got to clean the windows…I worked in a car wash.
12:54 Monty python foot? That's a new one for this shows memes. Another epic episode. With him featured, I wouldn't mind an up to speed on Magnus walker himself.
FYI: car parts has really long shipping times currently despite their guaranteed 2 day shipping promise. They also do a really annoying thing where they break your purchase into multiple different boxes and ship them out during different times. This becomes a huge issue when you've just purchased a whole suspension replacement for your car, which is not OEM I may add, only to get each strut and shock assembly to show up at your door spread out by a few days in between. They took 3 weeks to get my whole order to me, not 2 days. And they don't have everything you might need, like a heated seat replacement for your car. You're better off scouring the junk yards for one of those. The prices were good though, but you're essentially getting off brand ebay parts.
Even Jeremy Clarkson can stand by this car...pretty heartfelt story of him driving a 928 and how it afforded him to see his father before he passed 🙏🏻😌

The editing ruins the content to the point it is NOT watchable anymore. Don't get me wrong, content in itself is incredibly good and well researched. It's just that less is sometimes better...
I've been a huge fan of the 928 ever since I first saw Risky Business as a kid. HBO will never know how much they impacted one young boy's life on that day. Though I didn't know about folley artists and how they make cars sound cooler in movies than in real life.
Can I just take a moment to ask you all to watch this back. Then pay attention to the editing and single word OTT references via the "graphics" work. A MASSIVE SHOUT OUT to the person who pieced this together. Trashy, funny, on point and relevant. I'm unsure if I should be in awe, or dismayed. Smashed it. 🧐
I’m going to rebel here and mention the car. The 928 was an electrifying design in its day and stole my heart. Besides the numerous design features, it was those Pasha checkerboards that stunned the senses. Long live the 28!
Fascinating vid about the history of the 928, many thanks. I've owned 2 928s, a 1990 S4 and a 1993 GTS and loved them both. Currently have a manual Iris Blue 1996 993 Carerra in the garage along with a (gasp) 1986 BMW 635CSi. I've also been lucky enough to have had a couple of 944s (Lux and an S2) plus the odd Ferrari ( 2 328 GTBs, a 360 Modena, an F355 and a 456GT). My wife likes her little Skoda Fabia but puts up with my car madness (happy wife, happy life). Cheers from a rather chilly Otford, Kent, UK.
The Weissach in Weissach-Achse stands for: " 'W'inkel 'ei'nstellende, 's'elbst's'tabilisierende 'A'usgleichs-'Ch'arakteristik" Translated to Angle adjusting, self stabilizing, adjusting characteristic. But they obviously chose the word like that to make the acronym possible ;)
The 928 was my dream foreign car all through my youth. I loved it well before it was in any movies, only adorning magazine pages. Risky Business wasn't very good, but I loved seeing that 928, and almost cried when it got dunked. I still adore it.
928 reminds me of a Frog with those round pop up headlights. It's like how a Frog would blink when it tries to eat something. The green ones don't help either. Still 300+ hp... impressive for the 80s. #WeWantHorseCream
Thank you for making the 928 more well known, now I’ll never get anyone to sell. Was gonna buy one for 7500 and the next couple of hours the seller raised the price by 15 grand😢 “coincidence I think not”😭
I acquired this car and turned it into a race car and ran Speed World Challenge in it. such an amazing piece of automotive history. it was also hit in the race by Derek Bell in one of the races (and he signed the dent in the front bumper afterr the race) , as well as been driven by Al Holbert.
I have owned 2 Porsche 928's and I miss them immensely. They were more than they were advertised for. Very solid suspension. I wish I could get another GT 5 speed.
This is my favorite Porsche. The engine can make some decent power with a little modification, and I think it's damned good looking as well. I'd still like to own one someday.
From the moment I first saw the 928 (back in the early 80's) it has been my dream car. For me it is the absolute sexiest thing on four wheels. I always read all the car magazine articles I could find on it. I still hope to own one some day. Thank you.
This was actually hell of a good video of 928. Excellent information. 928 GTS is one of the most desirable Porsches to me. It's a beauty and the build quality of those cars is astonishing. Actually much better than anything produced today.
Great car. I’ve been in them and was blown away how well made and comfortable they are. I am glad they are being sought after now. They’ve earned that.
I used to own an '83 928S (Indisch Rot) and it was my daily driver for the better parts of 6 years. It was my dream car for the longest and, at 194cm (6' 4"), this was just about the only sports car I could fit in comfortably. When everything worked, it was wonderful! But, as the video showed, there were a lot of "firsts" with this car, not all of them great - like the fact that the instrument cluster was the first which was digitally controlled, not analog. There was a thin ribbon circuit board behind the cluster that powered the dials and that was plugged into a bus that would regularly burnout the connection leads. When it burned out, you now had zero instrumentation. Good luck explaining that to the Polizei! To replace it, you had to remove the entire instrument cluster, which was a minimum 3 hour task by an experienced mechanic and required special tools to do it. Another first for Porsche was the aluminum-plastic hybrid radiator, which was a piece of junk. If the plastic cracked, like mine did, you couldn't repair it - just throw it away and get another one. Even with all of that, when it was working, it was an amazing machine! I have driven nothing like it since and would buy one tomorrow if I could!
@@blackericdenice at which part? The original design called for a larger engine and they downsized slightly to a 4.5l, then 4.7l, 5.0l and finally a 5.4l at the end of production in 95. Also, the reason the cayenne had a 4.5l to start with is because they were going to bring out the 928 again but the market was in suv's.
I am so lucky, I have my second 928S, the first one was a 81 model, automatic transmission, a nice car, I sold it , and bought a 85 model Manual stick shift, that is just a amazing car, I have tested a lot of cars, this is the best car I have ever driven, it’s just a pleasure to ride. If you have the opertunity to phurcase a 928 S , I recommend you go for it, and go for the manual one. I am sure this cars will get more and more valuable, they are still underestimated and underpriced my car is a Euro model of course, 320 hp , I am not so found of the US model Best regards from Norway 🇳🇴 Ps loved this video ❤
1985 Porsche 928s. First car I ever went over 150mph in. Was really stable,.. when it ran. And this was a car with only 79k miles on it. So epnsive to fix and nobody wanted to work on these. I did really like the car. Had an awesome feel, like it was made for a giant German man!
loved that car, had an '87 s4 back in '89. multiplisticly orgasmic, especially for a 25 year old. I thought there shouldve been a 4 door version then. porsche finally listened decades later and made the panamera.
funny because I think the 996 owns a lot to the 928. It's certainly a lot more comfortable, more technological yet faster and more powerful than any 911 before
James you forgot to mention it's most alluring feature: "Iss like one of them tigerss, from India." And the radio, with the "scannerss"....to pick up flying saucers. And fog lights.....in case you get stuck in a swamp. The gun turret was extra though.
Haha, all that tuning in Forza finally paid off. I understood everything about why they had that suspension not only that from my experience playing a lot of Forza I know exactly how all those cars handle before you upgrade them it's crazy how accurate Forza really is. Btw, I actually like the 928. My uncle had a 928 a red one in the 80s I loved that car
loved the video. As a kid who grew up in the late 70's/early 80;' I can say that I never coveted the 911. To my young self, it was an old looking car and I never dreamed of owning one.The 928 always looked fresh and I remember crying when they destroyed one on cannonball run. Obviously, with hindsight the 911I'd own now, but would there still be a 911 if Porsche hadn't developed the 928?
The suspension on this car was like nothing seen before in the United States. It rode very well and very differently than anything most of us had experienced before.
This video is epic. Whoever does the editing is a genius! Funny funny stuff. There are a couple of mistakes (I.e the 5.0 V8 put out 288 hp not 227, it was a two generation car, 17 years of production instead of 18) but you nailed the overall vibe and purpose of the car where DeMuro missed it badly. Looking forward to the horse cream. Might even buy a horse..
I always loved the 928 (frog eyes). I wonder how it would have evolved if they continued it or brought it back (instead of pulling concepts from it). As always good show DM.
I would love to see you guys do a video on the 924 and 944. They are Porsche’s first trans axle and if I remember correctly the engine in the 944 is like if you cut the V8 in the 928 right down the middle.
I owned a '78 928 5 speed for about 25 years. Handling was amazing. I just loved it. The only design that I think Porsche really messed up on was the massive external dimensions of the small displacement 4.5L. Bore spacing was silly. I think it really caused problems for the designers and stylists.

The editing ruins the content to the point it is NOT watchable anymore.
Don't get me wrong, content in itself is incredibly good and well researched.

Just badass Porsche film.
and let's not forget the sentimental value of a 928 to Jeremy "Jezza" Clarkson
Really touching story. If he didn’t had a car as fast as that one he would have arrived too late at the hospital where is father was dying
Just watched that the other day. Still gets me 😭
That episode always got me man, very touching story!
I didn't like that bit. I don't wanna hear things like those. Too personal and I didn't watch him to hear the story of his life.

Magnus Walker, the most homeless looking rich guy out there
Also funny to quote him on crashing a 911... he has experience.

its called faux homeless, the guy is just branding.
How often does he shut a car door on his hair I wonder. I picture him walking away and getting yanked back!
just looks like an adult who is trying to hard to me
I've been a huge fan of the 928 ever since I first saw Risky Business as a kid.
Smashed it. 🧐
I thought the editing got worse

I’m going to rebel here and mention the car. The 928 was an electrifying design in its day and stole my heart. Besides the numerous design features, it was those Pasha checkerboards that stunned the senses. Long live the 28!
Checkerboards on LSD or shrooms. Like they hired MC Escher to design those interiors.
I've loved the 928 right from the 80's to now. It still looks contemporary to me and I'd love to own one.
I love the looks of the 928. It's so 80's in the best ways possible.
Especially the rotary phone wheels, god those are sexy.

The Weissach in Weissach-Achse stands for: " 'W'inkel 'ei'nstellende, 's'elbst's'tabilisierende 'A'usgleichs-'Ch'arakteristik"
Translated to Angle adjusting, self stabilizing, adjusting characteristic.
But they obviously chose the word like that to make the acronym possible ;)
Sounds like "Whysuckass" if you are immature and willing to own it....
When I heard him say gorillas, I immediately started singing the song only to hear him complete it also. Very satisfied with him
The 928 was my dream foreign car all through my youth.

I wish I could get another GT 5 speed.
go for it
This is my favorite Porsche. The engine can make some decent power with a little modification, and I think it's damned good looking as well. I'd still like to own one someday.
And you can at a very low price sometime even at $7000
no need modification it is good the way it is.

I LOVE the 928. My uncle bought a 1992 928 GTS in 1995. He still owns it. Metallic blue and its still gorgeous. Fantasticly underrated car.
This was actually hell of a good video of 928. Excellent information. 928 GTS is one of the most desirable Porsches to me. It's a beauty and the build quality of those cars is astonishing. Actually much better than anything produced today.
I think most cars back then were built better then most modern cars
Great car. I’ve been in them and was blown away how well made and comfortable they are.
I am glad they are being sought after now. They’ve earned that.
As a kid in the 90ies I really loved the look of the 928 and 944. To this day I get a kick out of seeing them
I used to own an '83 928S (Indisch Rot) and it was my daily driver for the better parts of 6 years.
I own 3….still an amazing car and has stood up to the test of time as a design.
Too Lucky!
Always remember, this car allowed Jeremy Clarkson to say goodbye to his dad
Never forget
xD...
Such a great story. It’s a lot like James’s story of his dad racing him to the hospital as a kid. He cried, it was great.

If you are a 928 owner. Why didn’t you catch the wrong engine size?
@@blackericdenice at which part? The original design called for a larger engine and they downsized slightly to a 4.5l, then 4.7l, 5.0l and finally a 5.4l at the end of production in 95. Also, the reason the cayenne had a 4.5l to start with is because they were going to bring out the 928 again but the market was in suv's.
I remember getting laughed at by 911 purists for driving a 928
I am so lucky, I have my second 928S, the first one was a 81 model, automatic transmission, a nice car, I sold it , and bought a 85 model
Manual stick shift, that is just a amazing car, I have tested a lot of cars, this is the best car I have ever driven, it’s just a pleasure to ride.
If you have the opertunity to phurcase a 928 S , I recommend you go for it, and go for the manual one. I am sure this cars will get more and more valuable, they are still underestimated and underpriced
my car is a Euro model of course, 320 hp , I am not so found of the US model

1985 Porsche 928s. First car I ever went over 150mph in. Was really stable,.. when it ran. And this was a car with only 79k miles on it. So epnsive to fix and nobody wanted to work on these. I did really like the car. Had an awesome feel, like it was made for a giant German man!

The 928 was so beautiful. Pictures don't do it justice. You had to see it in person to really appreciate it.

loved that car, had an '87 s4 back in '89. multiplisticly orgasmic, especially for a 25 year old. I thought there shouldve been a 4 door version then. porsche finally listened decades later and made the panamera.
I forget how old the 928 is sometimes, you legit could’ve said “this car debuted in 1996” and I would’ve believed you.
funny because I think the 996 owns a lot to the 928. It's certainly a lot more comfortable, more technological yet faster and more powerful than any 911 before

That was a very nice Minor Threat out of step reference you did there near the end.
I looooveee the 928 and 944. Been trying to find one to buy for years now. I was introduced to Porsche through the 928.
loved the video.
Classic Porsche’s + story time = amazingly great

This video is epic. Whoever does the editing is a genius! Funny funny stuff. There are a couple of mistakes (I.e the 5.0 V8 put out 288 hp not 227, it was a two generation car, 17 years of production instead of 18) but you nailed the overall vibe and purpose of the car where DeMuro missed it badly. Looking forward to the horse cream. Might even buy a horse..
I know it wasn't a popular Porsche but I really do like them. I love the headlights
That was their original idea but porsche being porsche they kept engineering and that 4 cylinder doesn’t have anything in common with the v8
Common myth
I owned a '78 928 5 speed for about 25 years. Handling was amazing. I just loved it. The only design that I think Porsche really messed up on was the massive external dimensions of the small displacement 4.5L. Bore spacing was silly. I think it really caused problems for the designers and stylists.
Okay Michael McDowell cameo is pretty cool
