- I take my Work truck and modify it so that it gets better fuel economy it went from 10 mpg up to 16 mpg by removing carbon buildup in the intake manifold and removing the throttlebody plate from the butterfly valve in the intake manifold, this is going to be part one and it is especially focused towards all of the 6.7 power stroke owners that want to get better fuel economy and mileage and mpg. Although the basic principles in here should apply to every other diesel truck that’s 2008 or Newer and has an EGR and emissions system. Please make sure to like subscribe hit the notifications and comment on here then share it with any of your friends that are getting very very bad fuel economy other diesel truck..

Retired now ,but drove semi ( diesel ) for 30 years. Every second fillup I,d use Kleen fuel additive to the tank to keep the combustion system clean , free of soot and moisture . Sold at all truck stops . Many people try to save a few bucks by not changing the fuel filter, false economy ,as well as air filter. Don,t cheap out ,change them all regularly .
Hi, almost 2 years ago now, i bought a 2017, F-550, 230thou mil., I'm in Tucson AZ., I'm from Alaska. I know my way around vehicles, and horses. Still this truck is a little scary. I would love to find a hang out with people that share the same interest. Have fun and learn. Your video gave me the idea, instead of doing everything alone stressing most the time. Im going to do this to my truck, and keep an eye on you and your videos. Thank you. Please let me kno know if you know any good people out here.
I love this video. Hopefully I can find your next one. ❤
I just finished this mod. to my 6.7 Ford. Thank you for the video and info. I am getting avg. 18.7 still going up

No doubt! Excellent thanks brother 🏁
Super info and appreciate your effort. Thanks a mil,
People please don't listen to this tool. I'm sure he knows so much more than the engineers that designed the truck.
Awesome info...
Thank you...!!!!
Diesels get a huge buildup of soot overtime so it's a really good idea to clean out the area where it builds up every 6 months or oil change periods. It's also a really good idea to get an oil catch can.
No EGR = NO Carbon buildup in the intake !
Thanks for a great video

Why does the egr need it
I believe it's used to create a sort of vacuum one egr side to help with egr flow.
@@CanadianGulfstream so the intake pressure is lower than exhaust, otherwise it would dump intake into exhaust vs exhaust to intake
@@sergdiesel5688 yeah, I’m not sure about vaccine, but maybe. It is to lower intake pressure lower than exhaust
@@justinkroeker1464 yes, I agree it's used to create a lower pressure in the intake, therefore, it's used to create a greater pressure differential across the EGR valve to facilitate EGR flow at low speeds and while under load. Also, it's used to have a smoother shutdown. Not trying to bust your balls, just commenting my opinion as requested. Honestly, with any 6.7 powerstroke questions, I ask @Powerstroke Tech Talk w/ Arod
I have a 2015 power stroke and like that part of removing that butterfly makes seance to me I am gonna try removing it on mine.
I feel the same you need to block off that egr your truck will love you
The purpose of the flap is to restrict air flow to increase heat in cold weather so the dpf will create a catalyst
What if you remove the dpf?
I work for my local DPW and we have a couple F-550 s with the 6.7 in it. I removed the flap on both the trucks and I did notice that the engine temperature runs slightly colder than before. But only by a needles width. It seems to regen fine in 30 degree weather but I'll find out in the winter time if they really affects the regen.
No, it’s to regulate egr valve pressures

I was impressed by your video, I own a 2015 F250 Super Duty. I'd like it to last forever what other recommendations to you suggest?
I average 16.2 overall with light pop up camper and pulling a boat or utility trailer often. All I do is standard maintenance on 2011F250, 6.7ps. I have 209,000 miles
@Tylerlanz if you’re still responding to comments but I have a question. First off I liked, followed and shared it video a bunch. Second thank you for taking the time to make this video, I really hope my gas mileage goes up that much! I already replaced the fuel filters( I’m an idiot and didn’t put grease on the gasket for the filter housing to the pump and broke the pump ($450)😮) low pressure fuel pump and the air filter. Ok my question is @ 7:52 on your video, the past that connects to the air filter housing and has the aluminum house price going over it. What is that called and why do I have a little tank looking thing on mine? Should I take it off or leave it on. And if I take it off, where do I get the piece and what is it called to plug the hole? Once again, you’re awesome I appreciate your time, and your knowledge!
Looks good
did you use any cleaning solutions for the intake
You should normally get 16 to 17 mpg empty milage, but your block off plate will throw a code for egr, a blocked egr will do this too
You should water injection to help clear and keep that carbon from building up in the engine. Water injection will clean intake, valves, pistons and ring grooves. You might see even more gain in MPG.
When he said 18 for 7.3 yep all bull . Apparently I'm not going to learn anything.
How the fuck is your MPG that low? I’m getting 18-25mpg with mine. And it’s completely stock

Thank you I'm gonna give this a shot and see if it will help with fuel mileage on my 08 f250 diesel cause rite now I'm getting 9.4mpg and diesel is $6gal

Tyler, where are the follow-up videos for your 6.7 powerstroke video?
Truck had a weight loss kit and had a tune that was terrible, I changed the tune and now averaging 17 but has gotten 20 on a 200 mile trip. I'm going to look into that throttle body and clean it up soon to see if I can get anymore.
What tune did you have?
Just bought a 08 6.4 just wondering if this will help mine? And Thanks!
We have a 2022 F350 6.7, not towing we're getting 18mpg city/highway, sometimes 20. Towing a 16k 5th wheel, 12 to 14mpg with hills. Won't be doing anything to screw up our warranty at this time.
I have a 2012 6.7 with 209,000 miles on it. I replaced the cold side pipe recently (for the 2nd time) and notice a huge build up of carbon in the same area. I scraped out what I could but I think I'll go in from the other side as you show to remove even more carbon but I think I'll leave the flap in place. I do currently get around 16 to 18 mpg driving around town and 20 -21 on the highway empty. When towing my 9,000 lb 5th wheel I get about 11-12 mpg.
I'm totally trying this
I need the follow up video on the repairs you mentioned doing
Just seen your video because of what iv watched 👍👍👍 going to try this trick on my stock cab/chassis 6.7 I'll let u know I get 10.2 fuel milage 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
So, what happened
This is NOT A 6.7
My 2014 6.7lL gets 16 around town and over 20 on the highway when empty. Towing a 10K trailer would go down to 10 or 12. No mods but did use all of the Arch Oil products as directed to keep things cleaned up and lubricated properly. I see no reason to delete anything and run the risk of a huge fine, impoundment, etc. You have to take care of the vehicle, change the oil, buy decent fuel, etc. and you should not have a problem
I put gasoline and had to have the DPF replaced. Mileage went from 16 to 10! Shows no codes. Not really the issue here, but need to find issue.
So once you turn off the EGR, you don't need the delete tune, and can drive without it?
Snider Performance Engineering make a CCV reroute kit for the 6.7 power stroke, that would help with the mess
That mess is from the EGR not the CCV.
Thanks for the info! I'm just curious if you're still going to do the Part 2?
If you want to really help the engine you should get the egr gas from after the dpf so there is no soot in the flow
I have a bone stock 2016 F350 4x4 Lariat with just under 90k miles. In town driving I get 18 mpg unloaded. I am never on the highway without a trailer but unloaded I get 14 to 15. Depending on how heavy the load is I have gotten down to 11 mpg. Since 30k I always use Hot Shot's Secret LX4 Lubricity Extreme fuel additive. I also change the fuel filters with every T6 Rotella 10K oil change and swap out the oil filter at 5K. I get the oil analyzed at every 10k oil change and the results tell me I could go 3 to 4k miles further on the oil that I am changing. Is it overkill? Yes, but I want this truck to last. A recent change in my business model will put 3 to 4 times what I had been averaging in mileage. I pulled apart the intake at 75k and cleaned it. The intake wasn't that bad. No difference in mileage after the clean.
An EGR and DEF delete with tune would be an option if I didn't live in an area that has emissions testing. My BIL has a 2014 F250 6.7 that he has deleted and he is getting 24 mpg unloaded but he is an insurance salesman that hauls a horse trailer a dozen times in a year.
What tunes is your BiL using ? I use Gdp and get around 16.7-17.4
What was the pic at 7:02 of? Maybe I missed it, but looked clean af and wondered if it was an “after” shot you took after the mid you were talking about…thanks!

I personally feel that this is just normal maintenance on any vehicle new enough to have an EGR on it, gasoline or diesel. Gained a few MPG on a 1995 Dakota (5.2L V8) years back cleaning it out until it went from black to shiny silver. Currently, my 2017 6.7L PSD gets 22-24mpg highway and 16-18mpg in the city. The big thing that interests me is deleting the EGR and DPF, which can nearly double the mileage. Then you get little build-up and not the mess you showed us.
I drive the same truck and only get 8.4 … what’s wrong with my truck 🤣🤦🏽♂️
@@Dawson-vy3zw Stop towing 15k and get back to me. If I tow it drops. It's also my daily driver though, and empty these things are amazing for what they are.
@@GuretoSefirosu lol how did you know I tow 🤣🤣 when I’m not towing I still only avg 10-12.
My 2017 Powerstroke (90k} consistently gets 12 mpg towing nothing. I’d really like to drive it more but fuel costs are too high. What can I do to improve the MPG?
@@masstpr15 i have no clue. I have the 3.55 diffs. Maybe yours are a taller gear? 12mpg without towing and not racing with it seems odd. To be fair, the max I go is 70mph, normally 65mph. I am not out west where you can do 80-85mph.
Try a shop vac for carbon pick-up, cold air intake, increase your boost
When the EGR flapper valve (throttle body) is removed it really messes with the regen. A service right now warning came on, then the cleaning exhaust filter came on and wouldn’t go away. I put the butter fly valve back in and all is fine. Unless an egr delete is applied don’t remove the throttle body butterfly valve.
Have you tried to remove the butterfly valve after an EGR delete ?
I also have a 4.5 inch lift with 35 x 12.5s and get 16mpg around town

i do mechanic work and i can tell my honest way of high mileage 6.7 experience clean up and work around using 160k miles truck F350 remove EGR disassemble and clean change gaskets if you can not clean or find shop has special washing hot chemical washer or buy dorman EGR rebuild kit also change and clean lower intake gaskets and clean inside every 80k miles also do the same with CCV box change filter or delete and cap the CCV box. If you see turbo is leaking oil and there is oil inside its better to take it off every 100k miles and have it rebuild for you for less then S700 cost,
By unhooking your trailer?
Why is your engine light still on? Also, I saw a gasket fall off while taking off throttle body. You never addressed this.

hello Tyler, D you have any updates on how long or if any problems happened after pulling that butterfly plate out?..
Hello 👋 Tyler did you do anything else to yr ol truck.
Why is your CEL on.
Thanks for the info. But will it still pass emissions ? Or void warranty ?
Diesels are exempt from emissions in the south.
Is this not much more environmentally frendly? I mean just through the turn of time of running.
I did this and it started going into limp mode started getting bad fuel economy had to relearn the throttle cause it started shifting weird no power etc installed it again and its more or less back to normal dont do this to your truck!! Its there for a reason and these trucks are sensitive to this stuff
If you did this mod, you would need to have a file to delete the truck for it to help anything.

injectors?
Lay shop vac hose right next to where you are scraping the soot out. Should suck it up instead of going into the engine.
that is not a throttle body.... that is a EGR PLATE the plate closes when the EGR valve opens to pull more air from the exhaust. That's why nothing happens drivability wise. It will throw codes P2074 P2073 and a few others. If you are doing this because your going to DELETE the truck then make sure to put that in the description so you don't mislead people.
What about the dpf? Does it clog faster for you?
The dpf is sprayed into the exhaust pipe as the exhaust is halfway out the back end. Dpf is a total joke, another way to screw diesel owners over. Never needed it in a diesel until obamabiden got in office.

My Ram Ecodiesels EGR is trouble free, in a box on a shelf, hehe.

Getting 23 MPG on the hwy with a deleted 6.7. Is yours stock?
I have the deleted kit and I only get 14.2 on a 2012 6.7
Nice job....
This will not increase fuel mileage. I did this like two years ago except I took the entire manifold off and soaked it to get 100% of all the soot and oil out. I then replaced the “throttle body” with the H&S model and down pipe and it did nothing for mileage. But I already get 18 mpg on the highway empty. If you own a 6.7L that gets 10 mpg empty on the highway… you have other issues.
My 2015 6.7L gets 11mpg at 6000ft altitude towing 8000lbs uphill @ 65mph.
That does not surprise me at all. My 2011 F350 KR pulls a 15000 lb fifth wheel and I get about 10 mpg at sea level. But empty I get 15-16 mpg around town and 18-20 mpg on the highway.

It will unless it’s already clean and after you clean it it shouldn’t get dirty again
What year is the truck! Talk a lot less on the front end.
Only way my 6.7 will get 16mpg is if I drop it out of an airplane. From day one with less than 30 miles on the truck it never got over 14mpg unless I was coasting downhill and keeping the speed under 60mph on the freeway. Granted a dually with 4.10 gears will get worse.
Both of my F350s 12' and 17' have 3.73 gears, both got the same milage towing, around 10, and the same milage empty, 16 to 17, fuel milage actually seems the same at 55mph or 70mph, kind of like the old big block gas motors that got 10 loaded or empty, except this is speed that doesn't change the mileage
Deleted mine, egr and dpf that now has 301k miles . H&S tuner in street mode will get 18-20mpg going 65-70 on cruise control.
