  • Folks with Ford trucks who are concerned with their fuel economy, watch this video!
What up breatherens! Hope everyone is well. Tonight I wanted to touch on a subject that I have not really covered, FUEL ECONOMY! What is good, what is not and what you would to expect. Dont forget SUPERDUTY trucks are not rated by the EPA fuel fuel economy. There are lots of things that will effect fuel economy such as: fuel quality, winter blend fuel, ambient temperature, frequent stops, idle time (in case you didn't know 1 hour at idle is equal to 25 miles of driving), trailer towing, speed, accessories that produce drag, non-standard tires(AND YOU KNOW WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT), tire pressure, heavy loads, and abrupt acceleration. 6.7L engines can also see an effect in fuel economy depending on the frequency of the diesel particulate filter regeneration, these are some of the things we want to watch so that we can get as many MPG's as we can. Enjoy everyone. Remember to LIKE - COMMENT - SUB - SHARE

Now granted I’m in Texas, i have a fully deleted 2012 F-350 with all the emissions removed, 50hp tow tune, ranch hand replacement bumpers, leveling kit, 295/65/20 tires, and getting an average of 15.8 combined and I’ve calculated 21mpg in perfect weather conditions on an 11 hr trip. I’m extremely happy with the performance of these 6.7’s, by far the best diesel I’ve owned, considering I’ve owned each of the big 3 diesels. If I was worried about mpg’s I’d buy a Prius. But that’s not going to pull a 15,000lb skid steer on a 32ft trailer lol.

    Good video and explanation!
    2014 F-250 diesel:
    1) Pre “extra” equipment removal: 12.5-15.5 MPG highway (regen would kill those numbers)
    2) Post “extra” equipment removal: 19-21 MPG highway
    3) Post aftermarket catalytic converter: 18-19 MPG highway

Back in the late nineties I was a Dodge mechanic. We use to get this complaint somewhat often. It was usually because people purchased a truck that they did not Hall with often. But had the heavy duty haul kit and 410 gears.on 5.9 Cummins auto.
My '00 7.3 excursion got up to 22mpg. Usually about 18

2017 F250 platinum lifted 4.5” BDS running 35s doing 80 I get 14.5 mpg. If I do 70 mph I get 17 mpg. I use EDT Hot Shots Secret for lubricity and cetane boost but at the very minimum dose. I know cetane increases cylinder temps so I am careful not to hurt internals as my truck “breathes freely” so my tunes have some advanced timing on injection. Love your vids brother!!

One thing I've done while working at ford is the BG intake service. I work on gasoline engines so I don't know what BG has for diesels but I know that intake injection does wonders on the valves and even butterfly valves. It definitely helps those 3.5l engines or any of fords direct injection engines.

Tire type and alignment is also a big factor in economy, a true highway tire properly inflated and a good alignment that isn't pushing the front tires down the road is way different than a all terrain tire with your front toe toed out a ton. Also idle time is something I factor in. People like remote starting their vehicle on hot and cold days to get the temperature changed and I feel is often overlooked.
I do not get many fuel economy complaints. But when I do it is always a truck and after talking to the customer we agree that there are so many factors that it isn't worth going crazy over. Giving the customer tips like using a top tier fuel, additive, maintaining tire pressures weekly, adjusting driving style etc usually makes them feel better.

2015 F250 6.7 here, 244,000 miles, bought it fully deleted at 243K miles, was told from the owner it had a "good tune" on it, test drive seemed to confirm it - engine appears to run clean, zero smoke out the pipe, gobs of power, will smoke tires in 2nd and 3rd gear on a run from stop. Still does that after I bought it. Outwardly appears to be otherwise bone stock. I've run 3 (25gal) tanks through it so far with, adding Hot Shots EDT, changed the oil right away, running Rotella T6 5W-40, Motorcraft filter (following PTT w/ARod's recommendation). Consistently getting about 14.5mpg city/start-stop driving, 18mpg on long trips that are 90% freeway lightly loaded or with the hard tonneau cover in place. (side note, It does have other typical problems - oil leak from the front cover (but not the upper oil pan) and death wobble which I'm gradually working on, some PTT videos and others are helping me gradually resolve those issues).

Don't know if you have had this yet. 2017 MY, build date dec 16 or earlier. I did note a strong exhaust smell without recirculation on, manifold to inlet pipe gaskets were leaking on both sides. In both cases the inside nut was lose and the gasket was burned out. (I can only guess this was a factory problem) There are two concerns here, exhaust smell and in some cases poor fuel economy. Inspection camera to confirm the location, I would however also check above to see if you have any soot building up inside or around the heat shields just to confirm your issue is singular. Replace with the MAHLE manifold to inlet pipe gasket not the Ford. Replace the band clamps with new after cleaning both sides. I went from 14.2 avg to 17.7avg across multiple tanks of fuel. I use a 30 inch spade bit in an actual sds hammer drill set to hammer only with the bit ground down into a v. I couldnt find a company that makes very long spade bits for air hammers so thats what I used.

I work for an RV dealer and recently drove a brand new motorhome with the F53 chassis w/7.3L V8. Going 135 miles from Orlando it got 7.8 MPG. Pretty sad considering last years models with the 6.8 V10's get around 10 MPG as a rule.

Interesting video as my 100% stock 4/2010 build JOB 1 2011 F250 CCLB (8360# per CAT scale) has 142K miles and is right in the same ballpark mpg as the tested vehicle - 14.5 local, 18-20 interstate. Pulling a 12K, 38 foot Montana 5th wheel, generally 11.5 -13. I have found a huge difference in fuel quality from the same station which can kill or boost mpg. 20% bio will also drop mpg - ours in NY State is up to 10% tho that higher percentage found elsewhere wont hurt towing performance, only your wallet wilth less mpg/fill

Man after watching this video and reading some comments my truck is awful. I have a 16 F250 with about 82k miles and with stock tires I was lucky to get 12-13. I have since put a 2.5" lift and run I think 295/65 tires, basically a 35" and now I run about 10.8 that's the best I can do. Now that's mostly city driving and we do haul our horse a lot, but I still think it should do better than that when we dont haul. I'll check out your recommended additives and see what that does. I've only added a little anti gel when Texas had the freak winter weather but that's it. Also the previous owner added a tuner module that eventually failed and gave me a low fuel rail pressure fault, as far as I know it wasn't a computer tune, just tune from the box. I disconnected the box and fault went away no problems since, so I don't think that would continue to mess with my mpgs.

2017 F-250 King Ranch, CC, SB, 4x4. I get 16-18mpg in town and 22-24mpg on the road (not towing). I have the 3.55 electronic locking diff and the standard King Ranch rims/Michelin tires. Towing a 7.5x12 trailer (no v-nose) with mowing equipment, around 17-18mpg on the road. I lose 2-3mpg when a regen occurs. I have changed nothing. The truck is bone stock and I even have Ford do the maintenance. I do run Opti-Lube XPD in the rig to help lube that deadly CP4 pump and raise cetane rating.

Thanks man for great content. You mentioned fuel additives. I have a question regarding anti-gel for diesel. When I bought my 17 F350 with the beautiful 6.7, I was told to never add in additives, like anti-gel. They said to use the winterized diesel at the pump. Well, Monday night weather peeps are calling for 16 degrees and none of the stations near me are carrying winterized diesel. What's your take on this? Do you suggest adding additives? If yes, what would you recommend? I do see pm-23-a. But want to hear from an experienced tech like yourself versus the sales guy.

I just have to wonder why the dashboard sometimes matches exactly what the hand calc showed, and sometimes is pretty optimistic, especially since the injectors are supposedly so accurately characterized in the PCM.

My '16's "AVG MPG" also freezes just like the truck in the video. I've gone on 1k mile trips and it never changed. For it to start working again, I have to reset it for it to start calculating again. I don't know if there is an inherent problem with the PCM or BCM.

Well I wasn't up on my which tube goes where, and took off the upper intake. And I found one port had at least 3/8 inch of crap built up. Where is that coming from? Exhaust egr? My 2019 F450 and 2020 F550 (both 6.7) get mid teens unloaded down the highway but they are not stock, both are DBL Customs super single converted trucks. My 2020 F350 6.7 with a Carli 4.5” lift riding on 37” Toyo RT’s averages 17-18 unloaded highway. found this and a-rod podcast recently and great stuff..!!!.. When you talk about recommending running a fuel additive to help with fuel issues is that also to help with the lack of lubricants in the ULS fuel and to help with the high pressure fuel pumps?? I have been seeing some stuff on different forums that talk about the CP4.2 fuel pump that can self destruct and cause a 13K issues with needed repairs..
I was wondering how often this happens?? are you seeing a couple in a qtr or a couple a month of the pumps having problems..??
