I rode a 2020 S1000XR demo bike the other day in the Midlands of England, for about 6 hours. I haven’t owned or ridden a bike since sacrificing my K1200S when we moved back to UK from the Mediterranean. I sold it in 2013 and so I was somewhat wobbly to start with. I’m reasonably tall, 183cm/6ft with a 33.5in inside leg. However, I had my left hip done 3 years ago and my right one needs doing now. I found getting on and off the XR to be a little challenging, but that’s my fault not BMW’s. I too was hunting for neutral, mostly unsuccessfully, oh once successfully when I was accelerating out of junction I found it. Good job my trousers were tucked in my boots! The side stand was a big issue for me too, but not the angle, but the fact wearing my Daytona Evo GTX boots I couldn’t always find it. It was scorching hot in the UK the other day. I was wearing my Dainese X-tech undersuit and my BMW Atlantis 4 suit and hunting for the stand was torture causing all sorts of sweating issues. I’ve spoken to the dealer and they’d get the stand sorted and a lowered suspension one to help me with my flexibility issues. On the cases front, in the UK and Europe, you can buy black top case and panniers. Perhaps you should look at importing them. As for vibrations, I did notice some, but that’s due to my fused arthritic wrist on my right hand. I didn’t feel any on the left. I’m booked in for a low seat GS1250 test and I swung a leg over an R1250RS. The RS is considerably lower and I managed to get on and off no problem. I’m waiting until Spring 2021, in case they update the K1600GT, which is another potential bike I’d buy. What I will say about BMW in the UK is they are excellent at customer care. I just exchanged 2 identical 2007, BMW Sport helmets, under the recall for two £520 ($675) Race helmets. I picked the expensive colours, M Sport and the black and fluorescent yellow one. I’ve had great service between 2005 and 2013 with my K1200S, and I would never buy any other bike, having had an Aprilia Futura 1000RST as my first bike (straight after passing my test) in 2003. That was a pile of shit in terms of reliability, beautiful but massively flawed.
I agree about the customer care as far as my limited experience goes thus far. I have only found a false neutral twice and both I would say were my fault as my left foot got a little lazy toeing up. I have been a big fan of the K1600 but the Mrs. doesn't like to ride as much anymore so I couldn't justify. Thanks for the support!
Thanks for watching. There are better values out there than these bikes at this price range for sure so hopefully these videos keep it all in perspective.
@@ThrottleBackRubberDown They definitely do keep it all in perspective!! Speaking improve range, it would be even better if they were all lower in price, get more people on em!!!
I have one and don't have any issues finding neutral, just for reference. One thing I don't like is the low exhaust box that catches of the smallest of ramps and large speed bumps

Got a 2016 XR (red), used aftermarket panniers just to save $$. I have a great story (old guys like me have lots of them) about after breaking in this bike. You know, first passive 500+ mi followed by first service. Then turned on “dynamic pro mode”..... OH YEA! Well let me put it this way, I came back smiling ear to ear. My buddy said; “ What’s up with the big smile?” My reply was; “I haven’t had this much fun on a bike in a while.” Then I had to admit that there were several times I think you could have heard my giggling in my helmet. Yeah...dynamic pro is like a whole new world when it is first unleashed. I agree that the bike is like the evil spawn of the RR and GS...it really gives you the best of both worlds. This bike wheelies so much differently than my 2017 MTS...it took me a bit to feel that out but it is a beast and tons of fun. It pours on speed so quickly...puts you back in the saddle for sure...I like to call it "the hand of god" acceleration. Thanks for supporting the video and dropping some dope stories and feedback. I had the same the problem, I made a fuss, the dealer painted the luggage to suit. My argument was the red option the luggage is colour coded. with the grey they aren’t!
For sure. Glad you could get that done. I felt like I didn't have much of a leg to stand on since they had both bikes in stock, told me up front, and knocked off a $1000 from mine and it was brand new. I do love this bike though.
Glad you love it. I can’t stop raving about it personally, coming from an early 2000 sports bike and then owning this. It blows my socks off every time I ride it. If your interested I can show you a picture of mine with the luggage painted in the ice grey. Not sure how via UA-cam.
Hi, thank you for this video. If I may, why have you chosen for the BMW and not for the Multistrada V4? Just wanted something else compared to your previous Ducati or ...? I’m still hesitating between both bikes. Thx
Great ?. The V4 Multi wasn't due out for almost 6 months when I got my S1000XR. Also...As much as I truly loved my last MTS I am not so sure about this next iteration. I feel like they are making more of a run at the off road side of things as reflected in the wheel size. I love the 37,000 mile valve interval but my riding is all on tarmac which I feel like the S1000XR has the slight advantage due to the engine. Having said that, I love Ducati but it was going to be a long wait for the V4 and one will pay a premium in the first year or two so the S1000XR checked a lot of boxes for me and I had never owned a BMW so that was another plus for sure.
Hmm...Well, I picked the BMW but if I had to do it again now that I have owned both? They are both amazing bikes. I like the way this engine performs but I do miss the characteristics of the big Duc. Vtwin. This is more refined and is definitely faster and you can feel the difference. It is truly hard to pick between the two. With that said, the dealership experience was 100 to 0 in favor of the BMW in my area so that breaks a tie in my mind.
I think you will love the bike. I am usually in relax mode and taking things easy when shooting a vlog like this so often times will find I use my hand to accentuate points while vlogging if road conditions allow...just a thing I do I guess 😎
Just saw your videos/channel. This is good. I have a 2020 XR. (Had a 2018.) Appreciate your perspective and insights. Question: I notice you are riding in Dynamic Pro. I have some questions about Dynamic Pro features and set up on the XR. Stupid questions, like can you ride in Dynamic Engine mode AND Road Suspension mode at the same time? Can you program Dynamic Pro where you mix/match engine and suspension modes? What do you know in this regard and would it be a topic you care to cover in a future video?
Thanks for the support. I’ll make that video this week and get it out not this Sunday but the one after...11/1. You can ride in Dynamic Pro on road setting if you choose. I will walk through it all in the 11/1 video. Cheers mate.
What kind of Multistrada did you have? I have a 1260S thinking about taking one of these for a test ride. Multi is great but low speed stuff (20-35) i wish it was more smooth
I had a 2017 1200s Touring. I loved that bike and engine but have equally good feelings about this one after 2500+ miles. This engine pulls harder than the multi and it is smoother down low. Engine and transmission is better on the S1000XR but the Ducati's electronics are more programmable if that is your thing. Can't lose with either bike in my mind.
Like your videos so far. I am currently looking at either the S1000XR or a Multistrada for my next bike, well and the KTM Super Duke and the Kawasaki Versys 1000 SE but the XR and MS are my top two. Keen to hear your thoughts between them and why you got rid of the Multistrada? Keep up the great work.
Great bikes you are looking at. I considered all of those. The Kawasaki hold its own offers a ton of value at the right selling price. I missed one locally and the next one they got in they wanted full price on. I have a soft spot for that Ducati and the sweet sound of that engine. I did a pretty thorough comparison of the MTS and this bike in my review of this bike. I talk about the MTS in a lot of videos but take a look at this one. I hit on the key aspects including why I had to get rid of it. ua-cam.com/video/KrEkYNRKOnQ/v-deo.html

Another great video thx i totally agree with the pannier point, here in the uk we have black or black with a red panel on the top, why not grey too or white for the sport pack?. Thank you for addressing my previous question about the dash at night in this video. If i may ask another question as i cant find the answer anywhere, how does the steering lock work with the keyless witch craft? thx
Thanks for taking the time to check it out. I always feel like I am grasping a bit to find things I don't like when overall I am really loving the bike. I will say I am not the biggest fan of the inline 4 but this particular one is a monster and tons of fun.
@@ahmetgoksuball5151 I took the center stand off .... noice continued... I thought maybe its the license plate... took it off... I turned out it was the chain hitting the slider all along ... I can't take the chain off and it's adjusted correctly according to bmw .... so it is what it is
I had a 2005 Duc Supersport 1000 and always thought the side stand was ridiculous, short, super small foot (as in sinking into asphalt small..lol). Sometimes it's hard to find things we don't like and really have to knit pick! By the way, how does that Ezpass work on the brake reservoir? ....whoa...slow down... love it.
Yeah...I like the bike overall...but bikes at this price point should be liked and there is always going to be something to single out. I have not had any issues with the EZ pass reading there. It seems to be the best place I have found. Out of the way and it reads. Set it and forget it ;)
I appreciate the feedback and support. My summer riding jacket in the video is a Joe Rocket Mesh. I forget the actual line/name but it wasn't overly expensive and has some decent protection but is great for hot weather.
As a owner of the same bike... The side stend you can add a 🐫 toe, Finding natural just like any other motorcycle, never find it tricky. About the panniers I ordered the "ready for paint" it is cheaper and I wrapped it with carbon look.. way better... but black can work just fine 🙂. The adaptive lights it is nice but you don't miss much, in this model it is rubbish, just add auxiliary lights 😉. The seat is my only complaint too hard for long ride... Nice vid 👌
Good thought on wrapping the luggage! I did in fact get the aux. lights and they are quite nice. The seat is polarizing...I find it fits my build really well. Thanks for the support!
Great question. I am really curious to see about the V4 and give it a ride. I really liked my 2017 which was the last year before the 1260 engine. I rode a 2018 as well. I could tell the 2018 models and up were definitely less wheelie happy. I think this was in large part due to the slightly longer dimensions. When comparing the Multi to the S1000XR I think the real decision maker is the engine. The BMW does certain things better than the Ducati and vice versa. In the end, it comes down to the type of engine one likes in my mind. In the long run I really like that big twin the Ducati had for everyday use...BUT...the BMW engine is insanely smooth and definitely a bit more powerful. You can really feel the speed on the Bimmer which is a bit more fun in my opinion. I don't think you could go wrong with either and a large reason I went with the BMW is I hadn't owned one yet.
@@ThrottleBackRubberDown excellent thank you for the response. I like both bikes but prefer the looks and 4 year warranty you get with the Ducati now. The v4 is sounding like a good choice also especially with the better servicing periods. Be keen to see how you get on with the XR though. Thanks again.
Thanks for the support...more to follow. Videos every Sunday/Monday...still working on the exact release date pending the topic and my availability over the weekends
I find with my 2019 with cupped seat that if I'm wearing Kevlar jeans it's uncomfortable after a while as it pulls the front up of my jeans if you see what I mean 🙄 but with textile trousers that give more it's very comfortable , I've just fitted some little denali dms to the side of my headlight , a company called cymarc in the uk do the bracket but not sure it's available for yours yet but they definitely helped with lighting at night especially giving more wider light , I've used the denali cansmart and will be adding more lighting to engine bars, great review and ride safe from UK 👍
Awesome feedback. I haven't had an issue with my pants thankfully :) I am thinking about some additional addons down the road including some more light...but like I said in my night riding video I don't get out at dark intentionally too much. Thanks for the great follow up.
I have had a friend who had a BMW S 1000 XR and just loved it. I get your point that for the price you should get matching panniers, over all great review.
Thanks for the support and comments. I dig the bike and am very happy with it...but...no matter the price of a machine we will all find somethings that we wish were "slightly" better or different. Thanks for the positive feedback!
Yeah for sure it is crazy. Perhaps I am crazy for knowing and having the option for red but going this direction anyways. I just like the bike color and at least the primer isn’t a bad look on the color of the bike...but still 🤨
I have the last gen XR bought new, plenty of time and miles with it. Now that I've bought one, would definitely not pay full price for one. The things I dislike most about it are funny enough the suspension and front master cylinder. The suspension is subjective, but damn, does swapping the mc for a Nissin R/RR one make one hell of a difference in brake feel. Comparatively, the GS one it comes with from the factory, is crap in terms of feel and progressiveness.
Yeah...I thought it was funny that there wasn't a radial mount but I can't say that the brakes suffer in my opinion. I honestly feel that they are better than what was on my MTS but agree at the price point the master cylinder could be a better setup.
Wow. No doubt these bikes don't come cheap. The MTS, S1000XR...this class of bike requires a big chunk of change. For me that's why I drive a Corolla. It's a trade off. I would love to have a GT350 Shelby but only so much money to go round, hahaha. Thus a Corolla and my extra money goes to my bike.
Thanks for the video👍 I guess that’s the small things that should be very easy to do right from the beginning like side stand and paper work, that’s the most annoying. It would be so easy for the manufacturer to do it correct from the beginning. Especially from German engineers that’s are known to not left anything to the chance. Even if a bike are designed to ride it will be almost useless if you not are able to park it or get it up from the side stand. 😊
The Versys is a great bike for sure. I missed a deal on one that I would have strongly considered. It is not quite on the same level in my opinion as the MTS and S1000XR but surely I would have loved it, too. Like many things...it wasn't available and I was going to pay full price after missing a great deal on one.
I appreciate your viewership and support. You'll see a pretty consistent theme of safety throughout my channel...that being said having one hand on the controls...while not my riding go to, doesn't present much if any of a safety concern in the situations viewed. I have full ability to brake swerve hard or accelerate hard with both brakes still covered (front and rear) and hand on throttle.

Set it and forget it ;)
QS & Blipper?
How about suspension
Thanks for the useful honest review 👍 Btw i like your jacket. seems very well for hot times. What model is it?
I appreciate the feedback and support. My summer riding jacket in the video is a Joe Rocket Mesh. I forget the actual line/name but it wasn't overly expensive and has some decent protection but is great for hot weather.
@@ThrottleBackRubberDown Thanks for the answer. Keep making great contents! Thanks for them too. 👍
Do you prefer it to your multistrader and if so why?
Nice job , keep them coming
Thanks for the support...more to follow. Videos every Sunday/Monday...still working on the exact release date pending the topic and my availability over the weekends
You got them expensive fancy bikes, NICE!!!
You only live once...They are filthy expensive for bikes though.
Thumbs up you're doing a good job take care catch you later
Thanks Mr. G. Catch you on the next one you put out.
When you mentioned the first of the top case plus painting it made my stomach sick🤢 great video though man😁
Yeah for sure it is crazy.
In Finland these are 30k€.
Thanks for the video👍
I guess that’s the small things that should be very easy to do right from the beginning like side stand and paper work, that’s the most annoying. It would be so easy for the manufacturer to do it correct from the beginning. Especially from German engineers that’s are known to not left anything to the chance.
Even if a bike are designed to ride it will be almost useless if you not are able to park it or get it up from the side stand. 😊
Oops I , dropped the comment with my other account 😳😊
Hahaha...I appreciate the support.
Right? It is really noticeable to any rider who looks at the bike that the stand needs to be a wee bit longer.
Great review - just subbed your channel -keep up the good work....JB
I appreciate your support! Thanks for the feedback.
Did you try out the Kawasaki Versys 1000SE? A whole lot cheaper and addresses all of your 'grievances' with the BMW I think.
The Versys is a great bike for sure. I missed a deal on one that I would have strongly considered. It is not quite on the same level in my opinion as the MTS and S1000XR but surely I would have loved it, too. Like many things...it wasn't available and I was going to pay full price after missing a great deal on one.
Toooo long winded, get to the point.
To each their own, thanks for watching.
Pls mate, use 2 hands to drive, safety matter, i really don't like this kind of driving, not if you make a video to be watched ;)
@@ThrottleBackRubberDown I just told you what i dont like much in your video, concerning security and driving. I'm a tester too for a magazine and i i do i video lke your i get a fee . :) if yo ucan always brake and handle bike i'm glad. im not here to send negative judge, just telling you is better drive with 2 hands (if you have them all) :D
Should I even bother explaining why this is a thumbs down video?
Troll away my friend...but thanks for watching.
2.12 in...”Where’s this guy going,..c’mon Mr Semi, ..keep two hands on the wheel “
As you ride the vast majority of this video with only one hand on the handlebars, gesticulating wildly with your left hand waving about in the air!
Really??...don’t you feel like a total hypocrite??? 🙄
He had no hands on the wheel of a semi on a bridge...A motorcycle, however, due to physics keeps itself upright and straight assuming the rider isn't a total prat, so no, I don't, but to each their own. Thanks for watching.
