Hi TMF - newish to the channel. Really enjoy and appreciate the content especially the reviews. Thank you for reviewing the BMW S1000XR. I recently purchased the 2020 model. BMW spec the bikes a little different in Australia - I ended up with the “Tour” version which I think is the “TE” version in the UK with the addition of fog lights and luggage mounts. I was coming from a 1999 Honda VFR800 great bike and loved touring with that sweet engine. In comparison the XR is a totally different machine. Bike tech has come a long way in 20 years😎👍. Agree with your list on things to like about the XR. I can’t quite believe how well this bike handles. The way it carries the weight and the sharpness in its ability to change direction is amazing. Personally I would have added its braking ability - pretty confidence inspiring and super stable without a massive amount of fork dive. I was tossing up between the XR the Triumph Tiger 900 - so glad I went with the XR. I think if you are coming from a sports or sport touring background and you are now a little bit older and looking for a more comfortable riding position without sacrificing the sports bike performance and “grin” the XR ticks all the boxes.
Hi Craig, im the same as you, looking at coming away from my 02 Vtec VFR 800, and I have been looking at ninja 1000sx, BMW F900XR and 1000XR, far prefer BMWs, great to see this on with the luggage on, and reds deffo the colour to go for I think. When I buy it will be nearly a year old ex-demo perhaps bike so hoping save a little..but I will miss the VFR. TMF has also ridden the F900XR, but not on a long term I do not think? be interesting to hear his comparison to the 2 models?
John Andrews - Hey John.... Am really enjoying the XR so haven’t missed the VFR as much as I thought I would. My wife rides and we are looking at updating her bike. Looking at the BMW F900XR and the Triumph Tiger 900 GT. Test rode the BMW - very capable bike, quite light handling wise and nice linear torque - the quick shifter was not as smooth as the S1000XR though. Looking forward to test riding the Triumph - reviews are good and it does come with a lower version (760mm - 780mm) which she likes. Can’t get a seat height that low on the BMW F900XR. BTW I saw a decent long term F900XR review on “Nothing to “Prove” channel which was pretty thorough 👍. Do like the review format that TMF provides especially likes and dislikes 👌
Thanks for the video! As I'm aging, I'm starting to wonder about those kind of older people's bikes as well. Sport touring seems like the best of both worlds in motorcycling
Yes the holy grail eh! I think in reality adventure bikes have kind of stepped into where sport tourers were ten years ago with bikes like the S1000XR sitting kind of between the old school ST's and the ADV bikes....
@@TheMissendenFlyer just picked one of these up to replace my tiger 1200 xca. Its great 👍 honestly it may replace my other 3 bikes. Its the bmw m3 of bikes.
2000 miles in on the new 2020XR and still loving it; I agree with all you’ve said........ 2 up we’ve found it’s a great bike for touring around on the straight or in the twistys, I look forward to what you think great review as always 👍🏻👍🏻💪🏻
Great video, sat watching this gave me goose bumps and a rye smile as I’m out on my XR 2017 model on Sunday, I’m quite sure when you peeled the throttle back you could see the enjoyment you were having. The breaks are phenomenal on mine sounds like they haven’t diminished on the new one. Not ready for a swop yet still enjoying mine. Nice video and look forward to the rest of your takes on the bike.
What an Aladdin's cave of a garage you have there in that opening sequence... I'm very jealous (I don't even have a garage at all!). You made some very good points although I do have some reservations about the TFT. You often praise the BMW one, but surely, with a TFT the size of a small television, it could incorporate the sat nav, rather than having something which looks like a Curry's showroom in front of you.
Nice round up! I currently own the previous model S1000XR and have test ridden the new one and I'd have to agree with your choices for the most part. For me the word I'd use to describe the difference would be 'refined'. Styling changes aside, they've basically refined the bike. Vibes have been reduced, the engine doesn't feel as aggressive (altho its just as fast) and the electronic suspension has been tuned. My only gripes are that the seat is not as comfortable as the previous model and the colour choices (there are currently only 2) are totally uninspiring (this has recently been remedied with the announcement of the M Sport model, which looks amazing).
I ride a 2015 S1000XR and love it - might be time to upgrade! On mine, unlike the GS, there is no lockable system for the GPS. I've had to adapt a Touratech holder to fit the XR just so I don't have to remove the GPS every time I park it. Looks like the 2020 model is the same - which seems a big oversight 5 years on? Would also love to see some footage of the panniers - fitting/removing, locking system, loading etc. while you've got the bike. Cheers!
Nice vid Andy and a great looking bike. Looking forward to the long term review and might even get down to Albi BMW to have a test ride based on the info so far. Cheers bud!
Great honest review Andy, I love mine but miss the sound of a twin at times, they have their bad points as well, but as we know there is no perfect bike, just different flavours.
You mentioned the gearbox and the quick shifter are smooth. How is the clutch lever in comparison to other bikes, say the 1200/1250 GS for example? Is it lighter as well?
Test rode one at the weekend with the Mrs, she found the ride/seat too hard. Tried a GS too and that was a surprising miss... R1250RS & 900XR was a popular hit... now just got to try and convince her on the outlay... great video - shame I’m not allowed one...
If passenger comfort is a high priority then you should also look at the RT especially if your looking to go places on your bike. It may be classed as a tourer but handling wise it doesn't handle like a big barge. I had the R1200RS and loved it but with a top box fitted the mrs really didn't get on with the upright stance it forced her into.
Steve Cade have tried an older RT before but even with the low seat I found it a bit big. I’m not the tallest and wonder if that plays into as the the bars on both the RS and F900 seemed a lot closer but I wouldn’t knock many modern bikes especially the RT - having gone abroad and seen many - all those owners can’t be wrong!
@@PCERules I actually find the RT to be a low bike but the seat is quiet wide (for comfort) so that would make things more difficult reaching the ground. You should have a look at KTM Superduke GT and the Kawasaki ZX1000SX if you would like something sporty and still need to take a pillion and don't mind getting your spanners out to adjust the chain and lube it. They were both on my list when I got my RS.
Sorry about that, UA-cam decides how many, where and when to serve ads - I only have the power to basically turn them on or off... a necessary evil I'm afraid.
Thanks for the video, as usual very interesting. Would you make a video about comparison between that one and the R1250GS? Outside of the look and the extra horses, what are the main differences when riding. Also I know a S1000RR and even the S1000R are not really fun to ride in cities (50km/h), those bikes call for faster riding. Is it the same with the 1000XR? Thx a lot. Cheers
Perfectly colour coded helmet!! I wonder what your next purchase will be haha! What is it like with Mrs TMF on the back? definitely interested in what she says. Really impressed with the GoPro stability despite your head knodding around all the time, very smooth indeed.
Yes amazing those GoPro's aren't they! Mrs Flyer features in a future video on this bike talking about what it's like to ride on the pillion seat....stay tuned!
No idea why but I can’t get comfy in Arai helmets, it looks great though, I always go back to Shoei. Great review as always, price is the only problem with BMW, a Z1000SX is way cheaper yet just about as good.
The old saying is you've either got an Arai shaped head or a Shoei shaped head...had a couple of Arais and they always felt slightly uncomfortable. Changed to Shoei and wouldn't consider anything else now, comfortable and fit me like a glove.
I currently wear a Bell Qualifier which is extremely comfortable but the wind noise is ridiculous! Even with ear plugs, its like you're standing behind a jet.
I'm just at the point of buying textile gear and made my mind up to buy the Oxford Mondial jacket and trousers after your great review. The Richa jacket looks great but is it worth the extra money? I'm a bit old school and buy the majority of my motorcycle related gear in physical shops and with the ever increased use of online shopping do you think it will kill off the traditional motorcycle shop?
Nathan Henry I'm definitely with you on that and it's good to stay open minded about which manufacturer your going to buy from because a piece of protective equipment is no good if it doesn't fit correctly
I own one and made 3500 km so far. I also test drove one for 200km before buying it. I agree with everything you said except the quickshifter. On both 2020 S1000 XRs I rode the quickshifter was/is not as good as on my 2019 XR. downshifts are a lot smoother on the old model. I also found the black plastik tank cover a bit scratchy. Other than that the bike is really great.
Good review Andy, I’ve always got the impression that you wernt really a fan of the XR. However, you sound pretty impressed with the 2020 model. Guess we’ll find out what you really think In later reviews.
I quite like the look and the way it appears to handle when your riding it Flyer. Would you change from your GS 1200 and or instead; get the GS1250...? Or this XR, 2020 version....?
Hows the fuel gadge/indicator on the bike now? The earlier model that I tried would only show an indicated 155 mile range but the bike could cover nearer to 200 miles on a full tank?
Does a full face helmet fit in the paniers? I like that it does fit in my Versys luggage. It means myself and the mrs' lid can go in there, and still room in top box.
Thanks for another great video. I tested one of these on friday and its a brilliant bike, so so easy to ride fast the miles just fly by. Any chance you could take it out at night? Im interested to see if the lights are any good as i do alot of riding down dark country lanes in the winter and have been stung a few times with bikes turning out to have pants lighting. Thanks again.,
Great video I have a 19 triple black and am seriously looking next year at this bike especially in the 21 m colour have you done a full take range wise TMF I get 155 on mine looking forward to seeing the rest of your videos on her 👍👍
Hey Mr Flyer, What shop did you get this beast loaned to you from? I am interested in panniers. Sorry if I missed the shop name in the video. I loved your reviews. I am in Cape Town and no body sell them here in South Africa. :(
Thanks for the great video, I am looking forward to see what you think of slow speed manoeuvring, and man handling it about on your drive. Is it top heavy with fuel ?
Most reviewers have complained about the amount of vibrations and buzzing at highway speeds making the bike uncomfortable on long distances at speeds of 70 mph. Could you elaborate on that, Andy please?
Hi TMF. I really like your videos and reviews. I have a strange question. Hoe do you find the Arai? I have a Shoei NXR , and I get a pressure point on the top right off my head (🤦♂️hope it makes sense). Between your Arai and Shoei which one do you find more comfortable (in your opinion)
Just test drove one alongside the R1250gs rallye but much preferred the gs. I agree about the handling on the xr but found the engine mostly unusable as you mainly get its power at high revs but no sooner have you got any revs you’re breaking the speed limit. Even though the xr has more power I found the gs felt quicker. But that just be me
I haven't had a go of one of these yet. Saw it at my local Beemer bike dealers, thought it looked very nice. Now you've test ridden the Triumph Tiger 900 and this. I'm guessing they're both candidates to replace your GS if and when the time comes. What's your favourite ? Now as I'm sure you know I'm a Triumph fanboy, but currently, if I had the cash and the space, I'm thinking I'd pick the Beemer. I really don't like the "lumpy" T plane crank triple in the Tiger 900, give me a 120 degree firing order triple anyday.
Oi! Feet, off! Lol I'm surprised at you Mr.Flyer hehehe I hope you wiped that seat afterwards. In all seriousness, I'm sure it's a great bike but it just doesn't "do it" for me. That dash is without doubt the one Triumph need to copy,...er I mean 'be inspired by' for their bikes. I'm not keen on their 90's stereo spectrum analyzer look to the Tiger 900 display. Great review and very informative as usual! I like those boots!
Lovely, unfortunately got to have a new exhaust system on mine to the tune of £2,300. BMW are helping with the cost, but just two years old and 7,000 miles !. As always 👍
@@splodge57 the bikes out of warranty but BMW, are covering the price of exhaust, apperantly common fault, exhaust flaps sticking, putting up an engine management light and making the bike misfire at 4000 revs.
too much money for me but i would like one. BTW did you see Big Rock Moto & Outdoors give u a shout out on the 790 wind beffeting issues? Long way from Missenden. ;)
What can I say about this bike without been able to ride it? Nothing, I totally rely on you. It’s an allroad bike with 1000 cc, big screen, luggage capacity, comfortable, enough safety electronics. So to me it’s almost the perfect bike. Almost because it’s quite expensive, too powerful and I probably can’t reach the floor with (almost) flat feet. There are other allroad bikes that can do more or less the same (with a bit less power) but are cheaper like the Suzuki V-Strom 1050, the Kawasaki Versys 1000, Triumph Tiger.
Be very wary about "thrashing" around the Alps - especially in Switzerland as the fuzz over there are taking speeding pretty seriously with hefty fines and immediate on-the-spot bans! Could very easily ruin your European Tour. My recommendation would be the B500 in the Black Forest.
@@TheMissendenFlyer Thank you! Unfortunately, it's a UK-only thing. (I'm in Calif., US) I'll look for similar products nearby. TYVM, TMF & keep up the good work.
Wow, I detect prolific enthusiasm Andy. I would love your 5 'loves' too. Can there possibly be as many as 5 'hates' for this super speed machine? Lighter than a GS, substantially more powerful, dream gearbox and quick-shifter, comfortable, good screen protection, ultra smooth 4 pot engine, are BMW working towards ending production of the GS/GSA? It must be sickening for them that they still sell so many. A trans-continental Tourer to lick the GS? Nope. Barn Door size crud-catching exposed radiator. Chain drive aaaaaggggghhhhhh. But still an amazing bike. If my money was no object, this would be my dream every day bike. Look forward to your deliberations as to whether the GS has become too agriculturally long in the tooth. And Mrs Flyers' opinion.
Great review as always. Wish I could have justified the extra cash, but even if I had such an extra surplus of 5k, I suspect I will would have picked the Ninja 1000SX just because it's so much much better looking (but as you say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder).
I wish you would make your mind up on some items. When you review a basic bike you like the fact there are no electronics and you get the feel of the bike. Then on this one, in your top five the “ electronic package”....
I think it's a BMW thing, he's a big fanboi of Beemers and in TMF's eyes they cannot do anything wrong, I don't think I have ever heard him say anything against them. He seems to like simpler machines with no electronics but only for short local rides, whenever he does any touring he goes for much more high tech bikes.

Thanks again.,
What's the comfort like for long term touring?
Stay tuned for my Lessons Learned video coming soon....
So fashion segment to the tune "In the Night" by The Pet Shop boys maybe ? You might remember it as the tune to the BBC's "Clothes Show" :-D
Glad you clarified that!
@@TheMissendenFlyer Here you go :-D "In The Night" ua-cam.com/video/OB2y40HID44/v-deo.html
Do you have more leg room than the rt. 😎🏍💨💨💨🇨🇦👍🏻
Yes I think you do if I remember the RT correctly (which oddly did fee a bit cramped in the leg department)...
Great video I have a 19 triple black and am seriously looking next year at this bike especially in the 21 m colour have you done a full take range wise TMF I get 155 on mine looking forward to seeing the rest of your videos on her 👍👍
Stay tuned - lots more to come!
Hey Mr Flyer, What shop did you get this beast loaned to you from? I am interested in panniers. Sorry if I missed the shop name in the video. I loved your reviews. I am in Cape Town and no body sell them here in South Africa. :(
The shop name was BMW UK - I'm fortunate enough to get loans direct from the manufacturers in most cases (with two notable exceptions).....
compare this to R1250gs which one would you choose?
Thank you
Comparison video with the GS is in the can and coming soon!
@@TheMissendenFlyer looking forward to it... great review..
Hi I have a question on the Monimoto trackers: is the more expensive version worth the extra money?
Sorry that’s off topic......
If you intend on travelling to different countries with different phone systems then yes....
Just within Europe.
Thanks for the great video, I am looking forward to see what you think of slow speed manoeuvring, and man handling it about on your drive. Is it top heavy with fuel ?
Coming soon!
Most reviewers have complained about the amount of vibrations and buzzing at highway speeds making the bike uncomfortable on long distances at speeds of 70 mph. Could you elaborate on that, Andy please?
Did you watch my initial review of the bike where I talk a lot about that? Plus stay tuned fr my "lessons learned" video soon....
Second time in a row, I am the first view and that too for XR.
Woohoo - congratulations!
is it true it gets uncomfrably hot?
I find them both as comfy!! No pressure points on either....sorry that doesn't help!
TheMissendenFlyer no worries. Thank you
Just test drove one alongside the R1250gs rallye but much preferred the gs. I agree about the handling on the xr but found the engine mostly unusable as you mainly get its power at high revs but no sooner have you got any revs you’re breaking the speed limit. Even though the xr has more power I found the gs felt quicker. But that just be me
Stay tuned Chris - I have a video comparing the GS to this soon, will be interesting to see if you concur with my conclusions!
What bike jeans you wearing here sir? Thanks 😊
Sorry just say you say to watch to the end 😂
Is your LiteLok discount still valid - if I click on the link there doesn't appear to be any discount applied.
Stay tuned - comparison with my GS to come.....
@@TheMissendenFlyer I'm looking forward to it already :)
Looks like a fun bike for sure.
Sure is....
Oi!
Cheers Al904cc - yes that dusty footprint was swiftly dealt with fear not!
Lovely bike, so many great bikes to choose from. Did think BMW might have fitted the shift cam technology.
Yes - odd omission that isn't it - what's the betting it's in the next iteration?
"Up there with the KTM Super Adventure and the Multistrada" - so if you had to own one of the three, which one would it be?
Out of those three - Multistrada.....cool looking and no vibes....
Lovely, unfortunately got to have a new exhaust system on mine to the tune of £2,300. BMW are helping with the cost, but just two years old and 7,000 miles !. As always 👍
Sorry to hear that :0(
That's a lot of money for an exhaust. If its a manufacturing defect surely its covered under warranty.
Long way from Missenden. ;)
No didn't - how exciting - do you have a link??

great review,,S1000XR OR R1250GS ,,, the 1 million dollar question :-)
...that very video is coming soon, stay tuned!
F900XR or 900 GT pro??
I'd opt for the 900 GT Pro personally....
TMF, what's the bar across your garage? Is that a theft deterrent/protection device? What's it called?
It's my "Guardsman" from Image4 Security - details in the description together with a link and a £50 off code!
@@TheMissendenFlyer Thank you! Unfortunately, it's a UK-only thing. (I'm in Calif., US) I'll look for similar products nearby. TYVM, TMF & keep up the good work.
Wud u buy one or a Gs
Stay tuned for a video on that very subject soon!
Cocaine, loose women, ... oh sorry you meant You not me n motorcycle stuff - my apologies sir
I do like the look of that bike.
Me too!
Dirty boots on the seat of an expensive bike, tut tut.
Yes sorry about that - to be fair it was only a bit of dust and I cleaned it off before returning the bike to BMW HQ....
Great video love the lid. Would you swap your GS for the XR?
Video on that very subject coming soon - stay tuned!
A good second big bike, or too much?
Depends what you're coming from I guess??
That Arai is 👌
Yes it is a lovely helmet - possibly my best.....certainly the most expensive!
Sounds like you are having fun :)
Sure am!
Coming soon!
How many bikes do you now own!
I have six currently
@@TheMissendenFlyer you lucky man, I'm jealous 😉
Informative vlog Sir. Keep them up TMF ...... (BikeNut on twitter) TUONO MAN
Better comparison might be with a KTM Superduke GT. 17" tires all-round.
multi 1260 for life
sounds like you have found a replacement for your GS :P
Stay tuned to find out!
Your BMW content is top notch sir. The exhaust note of that 1000xr is tickling.. Is it hard to ride with an erection?
Can't say as I've ever tried....
BMW have a winner with this model.Cheers.
My mate swapped his gs1200 for the 2020 one ,absolutely loves it
Great review as always. Wish I could have justified the extra cash, but even if I had such an extra surplus of 5k, I suspect I will would have picked the Ninja 1000SX just because it's so much much better looking (but as you say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder).
Bob Dunn you should have gone to specsavers
I wish you would make your mind up on some items. When you review a basic bike you like the fact there are no electronics and you get the feel of the bike. Then on this one, in your top five the “ electronic package”....
I think it's a BMW thing, he's a big fanboi of Beemers and in TMF's eyes they cannot do anything wrong, I don't think I have ever heard him say anything against them. He seems to like simpler machines with no electronics but only for short local rides, whenever he does any touring he goes for much more high tech bikes.
Exactly - horses for courses.....
Ian Clarke well duh
